Mirtle's post hits the nail on the head; too much turnover from last year at the wrong positions, and the injuries to Gonchar and Whitney really, really REALLY hurt this team.
Losing Gonch for this team is the equivalent of Boston losing Chara or Detroit losing Lidstrom...you can mitigate those losses for a while, but those guys do so much both on and off the ice that asking just about anyone to take over those roles is asking too much of most players.
Gonchar doesn't just quarterback the powerplay here. He played defense at an elite level last year. He got to loose pucks in front of Fleury. He played incredible positional defense. He jumpstarts the rush with his breakout passes and he's the best player on the team at skating the puck out of the defensive zone and starting the attack. The entire transitional game revolves around him.
In his absence, we've turned that role over to a center (Malkin/Crosby) who normally would be the recipient of his breakout passes or the next guy to get the puck from the wing. We've also asked two second-year pros - Letang and Goligoski - to handle that as well. You just can't put that kind of burden on kids that inexperienced.
If you want to know why we mostly look like mud trying to get out of our own zone and into the attacking zone, look no further than Gonchar's absence.
The collapse of the defensive play and the inconsistent goaltending has only compounded the problem.

Yeah, the man's no Gonchar, but the season would be in even worse shape if Scuds weren't out there. Why haven't we noticed him clearing shit out of Fleury's kitchen re: the beginning of the season? Sather - who I swear thinks it's still 2002 and not 2009 - gave up three players (two of whom are young and could still get better) and two picks (one of them a second-rounder) for Morris and Antropov, who are both unrestricted free agents.
Shero gives up at worst a third-round pick for Guerin. With a few exceptions here and there, most third-rounders become minor leaguers or role players at the NHL level.
That's a good deal by Shero getting a guy who can play in front of the net on the power play, add some more grit on the boards and capitalize off some of the chances he'll get now that he's playing with a couple of real centers.

Anyways, getting Guerin, even as old as he is, is an upgrade over Satan. He's more physical, and in Disco's system that's a must. The payment of a 3rd-to-5th rounder is nice.

I think Shero did a great job today. I'm also happy Staal is still here. He's been solid lately. The kid is still growing into that lanky body...he's got freakish reach, and he will be dominant when he hits 23-24. Guerin will be a solid add for the run. If nothing else, he's been a captain, has stanly cup experience, and like Kunitz, he goes to the net, which is something NOBODY was doing on the Pens earlier.
I'd say the Rags and Philly did more harm than good. I was impressed with what Phoenix and Calgary did today. And Toronto just does shit to do shit because they think they're the epicenter of the NHL.
