What a bad time for a game.
Usually Florida celebrates New Years by getting eliminated from the playoffs.
Not this year.
The Panthers are right on the Pens balls for a playoff spot.
They really don't have any big names, but they have a bunch of solid players.

Today's start time is Balls at it's very best. I am hoping that the Pens can pull out a victory to celebrate my birthday. Yup, 32 years old and full of gray.....but I have a hot wife/MILF, enough said.
This is not a game to take lightly. Their website on the other hand has pic with Ryan Malone with the puck....did they forget that Malone is now playing for their cross state rival? JOKE.
Although not stacked with the 'Superstar' powers such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Marc-Andre Fleury, Flordia is a gritty team with balls of steel.
Last season, this would've been a gimme game, but we all know where things stand right now.
Rumor had it that Marian Gaborik was gonna be skating along with our boys, but thankfully he decided to cash in his chips for the season and get that hip surgery he needs. With any luck, he'll return to the Wild before the season is done and show that he still has his sniper abilities and our Lord and Savior Ray Shero will spend the money needed to bring this great talent to the Steel City.
You can't say it enough times that this is a must win game. The last game on New Years Day against Boston had to be expeceted. Boston now sits on top of the NHL with the tops record, and they got there for a reason. Simple statement - BEASTS of the East.
In the previous comment thread, someone stated that Fleury shouldn't even get the starting spot for the ASG. I agreed with that. Although we all love our MAF, you can't justify the starting spot of the ASG. I'm not saying that Carey Price deserves it, but let's not forget about Tim Thomas from Boston. He's been solid between the pipes all season long. It actually kills me to say something nice about anything that comes out of Boston. I'm a New Yorker and a Yankees fan. Boston blows in my opinion, they drop their "R's", and have no idea how fustrating it is to drive in that city with constant street closures.....Sorry, got off subject and began to rant.
All I'm sayin is; the time is now for the Pens to step the fuck up and get shit done. No more time for 'It's a marathon, not sprint' (Which I stated not to long ago). Kick the Tires and Light the Fires.....LET'S GO PENS!!!!!

I'm not much for rumor-mongering or anything like that, but I heard a few interesting tidbits of hockey goodness earlier today. These came courtesy of someone I absolutely trust on these things (called the Roberts-for-Welch deal two weeks before it happened). Don't take these for gospel but...
1. Maxim Afinogenov can be had right now for the low, low cost of a mid-round pick - probably a fourth-rounder at the most. Problem is his contract, which prorated would still bring a cap hit of about $1.7M.
2. Be careful about getting your hopes up for Kovalchuk. The Pens DO indeed have an interest in a certain high-profile winger from Atlanta, but any deal for him isn't going to happen until closer to the deadline. Too many variables at play. Atlanta needs to continue to fall out of contention; if they're in the playoff hunt in mid-to-late-February, they probably won't deal him.
Second, they will almost certainly try to extend him because they have a shitload of cap space available heading into this summer, which they expect to use to be big players in free agency this summer. Those could combine to entice Kovalchuk to stay. Plus, they don't HAVE to move him this year. It IS a gamble because if Kovalchuk pulls a Hossa next year and decides to hit the UFA market, Waddell is left taking a much lesser deal for Kovalchuk at next year's deadline when he knows he could get more for him this year.
The Pens can only control so much with this, so if Kovalchuk isn't dealt, it won't be because Shero isn't trying or that they aren't offering enough.
3. Keep a very close eye on two Florida wingers this afternoon, two guys who could fit very well into the core here - David Booth and Nathan Horton. One or both may very well be here before the deadline...potentially sooner.

How can you not accept Marian Gaborik on this team? He is a serious sniper that would work well on a line with Crosby or Malkin. Sure he's been a little injury plauged, but I think after this hip surgery he has on Monday, and with the right rehab, he'll be that dominate player for many years to come.
Don't get me wrong, I miss not having Hossa on the line with Crosby. But there is no promise that things would've been any different so far this season.
On a side note....ESPN Mag has a solid article on Ryan Malone. It actually puts a new spin on the way things went leading up to his departure from the Pens. Anyone with a subscription should check it out.

Gaborik will not play for the Pens. To quote Van Wilder, "Write that down."
He's not just damaged goods, he's potentially high-priced damaged goods. Minnesota probably won't be able to move him before the deadline because teams aren't going to give up assets to acquire a guy who is a complete unknown at this point. If they trade him at all, they'll try to deal his exclusive negotiating rights before the July 1 free agency date.
Two hip surgeries at his age doesn't bode well for anyone.
Despite this, Gaborik will still likely try to go to free agency and cash in as much as he can on the market. There are teams with much more money to spend this summer than the Pens; teams that can and probably will take a stupid gamble on him.

Lets first look at his career. Season by season he has played 71,78,81,65,65,48,77, and 6 games. Not because he didn't like the Wild, but because he thinks he's a top 3 forward in the league, and should be payed as such.
