At this point, whenever you see Bill McCreary getting ready to ref your game,
be prepared to slam your head off something.
This was a really strange game.
In the grand scheme of things, no way it should have been a 4-1 game.
First, Bing misses a wide open net. Then the Devils are clearly offside and score.
Take away that goal, and it's 0-0 going into the third.
Remember that Staal hit a post in the first, too, and the Pens could have even had the lead.
If this is two weeks ago, Pens win.
But the breaks aren't going their way right now.
Devils won the game, and the Pens are a loss away from inducing panic into everyone who just started watching hockey last May.
[Sam's Dog]
[no name]
After some poop to start off their game, the Devils decided to send a message to the Pens, which resulted on a 4-on-4. Both teams were in chance city for those two minutes. Staal hit a pipe.
In what world does Bobby Holik actually belong in the NHL? If you wanted to know what 1995 felt like, every shift Holik took was a clear reminder.
Scoring a goal at the end of an even period like that wins hockey games. Pens kept the puck in the zone for an hour, but just couldn't get the knockout punch.
Vomit.
At the end of the Period, Eaton gets pushed into the net, knocks it off.
That's apparently a penalty this year.
Unreal.
Lightning-quick period.
Tim Wallace. First NHL game.
Relentless forecheck and not a lot of a mistakes.
Sabu was top-notch in the second. Good action again.
Matt Cooke was answering the Devils physical bullshit all game.
Bobby Holik is the dumbest player in the game. He runs someone again and gets a penalty.
Making him pay would have been great, but nothing doing on the powerplay.
Later on, Sid gets a nice feed from Dupuis. Wide open net...
It may have been the turning point, because here came the Devils.
They enter the zone on a harmless 2-on-2, puck bounces of the backboards.
Pat Zajac puts it home.
1-0
But wait. Let's go to the videotape.
That's offside everyday of the week. Easiest call ever.
But as you can see, there is no linesman present.
Fast-forward to the third period. Here is how it should have looked:
That is almost stunning that TWO officials are in position on this play.
There had to be a huge miscommunication between them. Even refs makes mistakes.
In the course of the season, you're going to get some calls, and not get some calls.
But still, the Devils are 9-0-5 going into the third period when leading.
Bad times.
It became clearly obvious that the whistles were put away to start the third.
Vintage McCreary.
At one point, Bobby Holik was tackling people.

The Devils would make it 2-0 on some shot from the point.
Father Time made his entrance, and it was all downhill from there.
Another goal by the Devils made it 3-0, and frustrationblog set in.
There was more clutching and grabbing the rest of the way than we care to get into.
Malkin and Cookie teamed up to give you some false hope with a little under 5 to play. 3-1
Letang should file charges for the mugging he took in the last two minutes.
Elias hit the open net.

MISCELLANEOUS
- Pens have lost 4 of their last 5. Let's face it. Injuries are catching up. It's why 3-game and 7-game winning streaks are so important. Pens still looking good.
- Curry. Have to.
- Ron Jeremy = Limp
- If this frustrating game was against the Caps, the Ovechkin ASG thing would be aborted.
- Thanks for everyone's support in the A.O. thing.

Still annoyed about the OBVIOUS offsides goal, but what's done is done.
Pens look good, but bounces didn't go our way/Devils on Letang's balls/Devils are boring when they take the lead.
I like Sabu, but I hope Curry starts tomorrow, because he's got to be getting burned out.
Our D played great last night. Rob Scuderi is a beautiful human being.
All of the AHL callups have been pulling their weight. Solid.
Islanders better hold on to their balls tonight.
Go Pens.
I wish Bobby Holik would wreck his car.
Fuck him.
Hopefully the Pens watched their wallets and other valuables after they left Newark.
I f'ing hate New Jersey and everything about it (aside from other Pens fans living in NJ, of course.)
@stokes: Maybe we should arrange a Dany Heatley carpool for Holik? Be a damn shame wouldn't it? NOT
Yeah it was offsides, but how many literally empty net goals has Sabu given up? Four? Five? This team needs Fleury back quickly. When I'm longing for the puck handling skills of MAF, you know it's bad.
-Staff's recap = more entertaining than the game. I've seen quilting competitions more exciting.
-Devils hockey sucks donkey balls. Nay, MULE balls. Burn!
-Anyone remember the butt-end Holik gave Sid off a faceoff last year in Atlanta? Sweet Jesus, he's a prick.
-Sabu has proved two things during this stretch:
1) He's one of the most solid backups in the league. Who would you rather have backing up your elite franchise goaltender: Sabu or Curtis Sanford? Sabu or Jonas Hiller? Sabu or Joey McDonald? Sabu or Stephen Valiquette? You get the idea. All of those guys are capable of--and have played this season--great games, but I wouldn't trade Sabourin for any of them, especially since he got his shit together mentally this summer.
2) He's not capable of carrying a starting load. Hopefully he (and other teams) realize this and he signs a contract with the Pens int he off-season.
-Speaking of backups, who taught Scott Clemmensen to play goalie all of a sudden?
-McCreary is no Don Koharski or Kelly Sutherland. (Is that sarcasm? Even I can't tell...)
-Consistency, please! One game guys like Staal, Satan, Sykora, Fedotenko and Cooke look like world beaters. The next, you barely hear their names.
-Though that will come when the lineup gets continuity back. Within the first week of 2009, we should have everyone other than Gonchar back from injury (provided more don't happen, anyway).
-Nice of all the fans to come dressed as empty seats last night. Even the Joke Louis arena was laughing at them.
-Why did the Devils decide to collectively piss into Kris Letang's cornflakes last night? You'd think he'd simultaneously banged all their wives and mothers in front of them. Then again, he probably did.
He wouldn't do Mrs. Holik though. I don't think he's into bestiality.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Patrick Duffy for gamenight tonight...do it.
If I may make three humble gameday suggestions:
Beast 1
Beast 2
Beast 3
Put these guys on a rotating schedule with Ed Harris and the Pens won't lose another game this season.
Actually, I suppose Ed is only called out for the big games, so you probably would want to use Red and Andy instead.
Incidentally, have they even made an appearance this year?
Ron=Very Limp
I'm pretty sure tonight's game is at home. If not, I'm going to be really sad standing outside Mellon Arena waiting to receive my free gym bag.
It's at home. I thought it was pretty lame that the Pens travel to NJ, then back home, then to Suckadelphia. Talk about back and fourth.
For next gameday, I suggest we use a real winner. And seeing how our best player right now is Russian, I saw we use Vasily Zaitsev.

Good ol' Buttman's NHL. The scheduling drives me crazy.
Thanks, Gary. Ass!
Also, my condolences on the "no call" offsides. In a tight game like that, an enormous blown call can dictate the outcome. You guys got jobbed, and I hate to see that.
Good luck tonight.
Raybin, did you steal my "dress as an empty seat night" joke?
Maybe we're just on the same page, I don't know.
RedWings should know a thing or two about crappy scheduling.
Whoa raybin, excellent suggestions! But I have some more worthy candidates:
Even more beast 1
Even more beast 2
Even more beast 3
@wilsmith
I'm sure I hijacked that joke from someone, but not from you, don't worry. At least if you used it last night...I didn't read the game thread.
@jonny
Job me all you like, but I'm telling you that Les Stroud is the Terminator, a hurricane, and a minotaur all wrapped up into one goofy balding Canadian. Unstoppable!
Don't use the baby in the dryer for Senators games though. They'll probably come after him, since he suits their taste.
I will always suggest him for Game Day, even if you never use him: BUSINESS.
the posts and the clear offsides, along with holik were super frustrating in this game.
go pens.
@rage - fucking right, do it.

Amen, brother.
This year, we've already finished the four game series with Vancouver, but we've only played four of the 24 games against our division opponents so far. And none of the six against Nashville yet.
And I don't remember if it was last year or the year before, but I believe we had a home and home and home with Minnesota. Back to back to back, three out of the four scheduled meetings. And don't get me started on the multiple West Coast trips every freakin' year.
Thanks, Gary. Ass!
@raybin: les stroud is money...seriously, get him in the rotation. A few more to consider:
Venkman
Bender from Breakfast Club
The Brothers MacManus
The Brothers MacManus....
How are these guys not regulars in the rotation already?
Talk about the perfect mix of badass and business.
Vomitblog again
A.O Is not getting any support from his fan base.
Please...please...please...
Can the Pens beat the Islanders 14-3 tonight...that'd make the last week of pain go away.
@ Raybin
The 20th Main is a great gameday pick. Also...Duffman. I'm thrusting in the general direction of victory
This has nothing to do with hockey, but since it's already barfblog, I would like to say that working in the Robinson Mall area at this time of year makes me wish that I had a fucking laser blaster death ray attached to my car. I could vaporize all of these Christmas shopping retards who make my life miserable by tying up traffic, making the restaurant lines twice as long, and generally acting like they have a collective IQ of 7.
It usually takes me fifteen minutes tops to leave my office, drive to get food, and get back. This time of year it takes 30 minutes minimum. I hate them all.
the gameday lineup has been over saturated with talentless hacks.
they're all washed up, we're like the pre-lockout rangers with all these clowns. we need a handful of go-to guys, and cut it off.
Staff -
Something needs to be done to motivate the boys tonight.
Do it.
Maybe we could negotiate a blockbuster trade to bring back Hacksaw.
Blend of Business and Badass.
Thats right.
Oh, right. Also, My Regards for "We're All Islanders".
Finally, Dany Sabourin's recent .883% and 3.55 GAA.
we need a handful of go-to guys, and cut it off
That is the truth.
The jury is still out on the Hacksaw non-signing. Nobody was complaining in November when the Pens were playing balls out, before injuries caught up with them. But then again, look at what San Jose has done to the rest of the league.
The initial statement still stands.
Also, Lovejoy got sent down today.
Damn, he did?
That sucks. I really like Lovejoy.
That's gotta mean Whits is closer.
Pretty pumped about that.
I hope MAF's back soon, too.
And no, this is not Sabu-hate.
All I'm going to say is...if any of you think you've got it bad...TB has lost 11 in a row...or is it twelve now?
Pens site also has Boucher back in, paired with Goligoski.
Even more disgusting is ESPN having Zajac's goal as the number 2 play of the day.
Not hating on Boucher, but when I saw that Lovejoy got sent down I was thinking it would be Whitney back in the line-up and I started getting the vapors.
fleuryous, I believe TB has already lost another game in the time between our posts.
Jokes.
wilsmith, couldn't agree with you more, hence my jobbing. Slowpoke Rodriguez would be huge, though.
It would be nice to go a week without having the need to call someone up from wilk spare.
Global warming made it snow today in New Orleans.
Yo mama was a gritty checking forward.
in that Holik pic, it look like Holik broke into letang's room and was about to rape him.
poor tanger, everyone is starting to job him for being soooooo good.
would do that crap to brooks.
Tanger doesn't really fight back, though--I wish he would.
You pull that stuff on Brooks, he'll let you know he's more than unhappy.
If Godard were out there, he would have done something.
Hence: never scratch Godard. haha.
And this is why the Pens aren't rushing Fleury back from his injury.
It wasn't just the Pens. Boston lost to Washington last night. What the hell was going on? Was it some weird moon thing?
Eh, whatevs. I'm done worrying about the Pens. It's exactly 1/3rd of the way through the season, and the Pens are 6 pts. from 1st in the Atlantic with three games in hand.
Gonchar hurt. Whitney hurt. MAF hurt. TK hurt.
In other news, Ulf Samuelsson apparently knew how to job Kevins Stevens and Rick Tocchet. I'll be pulling that Stevens job on one of my rink pals soon. But only if they drive a Beemer.
I was just thinking of a few things, namely the incredible error in scratching Gary Roberts in Game One.
I was also wondering where the flow charts are;
Ryan Malone, 7 yr deal for $4.5M. 15:55 ATOI.
7 Goals, 5 Assists, 3 PPG, 1 GWG, -3.
Ruslan Fedotenko, 1 yr deal for $2.25M. 14:23 ATOI.
7 goals, 5 assists, 0 PPG, 2 GWG, +1.
To Review;
Fedotenko
Bugsy
Ouch, John--that's harsh. haha.
That sucks for Luongo, Man.
I'm happy that we're giving MAF enough time to recover--it would suck to have a repeat of last year.
Still, I can't wait for him to come back.
This game is why Dany Sabourin will never be a starter in this league.
Holy shit it's FH. I concur. He's a decent backup when used to rest the starter for a game, but can't shoulder the load for a strech of time. Good thing Conklin played out of his mind last year when MAF went down.
I'm not hating on Sabu. He's solid as it gets for a start here and there, but he's no long term solution.
I think it's tough to say that one particular game is a reason why someone will never be a starter. The Pens got five quick goals on Brodeur last season and drove him out of the game, I don't think anyone is questioning that he should be a starting goaltender. Everybody has a bad game.
I'm not comparing Sabou to Brodeur, nor am I saying that he should absolutely be a starting goalie. But he's played better than average in Fleury's place, especially considering his small workload in past seasons. There are a couple of current starting goaltenders who Sabou has been at least as good as, if not better, so it's possible he gets a starting job somewhere.
Sabourin's effort on the Devils first goal might have been the most pathetic display of "goaltending" i've ever seen.
"The Pens got five quick goals on Brodeur last season and drove him out of the game"
You're right, Sabourin would have definitely stopped that wrap around shot by Stephane Matteau in 1994.
Way to understand exactly what I was getting at.
"Way to understand exactly what I was getting at."
Whenever Dany Sabourin is compared to Martin Brodeur in any capacity, I refuse to give a serious response.
I'm not comparing Sabou to Brodeur,
Nice selective reading skills, also.
seemed like a pretty good example actually, anyone can have a bad game.
i agree with dying alive
"the Pens are a loss away from inducing panic into everyone who just started watching hockey last May."
Is it my perception or are thePensblog writers completely brilliant when it comes to knowing their audience? Seriously, spot on. The Dark Ages post: needed. The post on hope before Game 5: brilliant. The list goes on.
Anyhow, I am thinking that a losing streak is in order. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see the Pens lose and slide in the standings. But a crisis is a terrible thing to waste. A Pens' losing streak would open up room for injured players to come in and form new chemistry, or rekindle old chemistry. (Or maybe the losing streak is a direct result of injuries.) Either way, I think a losing streak is in order. But this group will be powerful come playoff time.
No clue how I initially posted this in the wrong thread...
I'm switching it up tonight and hitting up the Souper Bowl with some friends.
Desperate times will get Hip to leave her pad on a weeknight.
If we lose tonight we're not making the playoffs.
The "alliance" to vote for OV was just mentioned on "Around the Rinks in 90 Seconds" on XM.
Went something like this:
"Hard to imagine Penguins fans and Capitals fans teaming up on anything, but pensblog has proposed an alliance to vote to get Alex Ovechkin into the All-Star Game." Then went on about how Crosby and Malkin are 1-2.
Anyone know how the Parkway West is looking? The roads in the Robinson area are totally fucked right now.
I just want to know on a scale of 1-10 how panicked the yinzers are so I know how much extra time to give myself.
@DA & FH
Stop jobbing the backups FH. Plenty of people said the same things about Hasek--"he'll never be a starter."
And yes, I did just compare Sabu to Hasek as of '91-'92.
Dyin' live, it's supposed to get bad a little later, freezing rain and such. Careful out there, and u should prolly leave soon just to be safe. There's bound to be an accident. And FH is a goalie you know, so anything u have to say regarding that position is automatically wrong. Even if you agree with him. A paradox...

M Parks sounds like Rahm Emanuel with that one.
Only a select few will get that. But it's cool...
@dying alive: it's shit up north around the Pine Richland area. I'm leaving at 6 just to make sure I get there in one piece and in time enough to get my duffle!
@Jonny V.-Gotcha....nice
Anybody know how I could go about picking up an autographed 8x10 of Ray Shero?
No mention of the Unholy Alliance.
Just a Habs fan bitching about "real" fans not caring because its not a "real" hockey game.
Ok, dude. Stop crying in your poutine, or we'll answer by storming in with these.
side note, NHL09 jersey code is out
xe6377uyrwm48frf
works for ps3 at least
I never got the feeling Pens were in it yet coach says good game, whatev.
Sabby is average at best we need to protect him clear out pucks fuck people up and get angry. If we do that I know we can win. That and stop trying to carve the next Michafuckingangelo statue of brillance and pass crisply and open man shoot the fucking puck and pounce on rebounds and fuck someone up.
OK I feel better now. Thanks for listening.
Yep... nailed the McCreary point right on the head.
I had a shit-fit yesterday, both IRL and in cblog, when FSN mentioned that he was ref.
Boucher is back for the Islanders game, so that is a positive.
"And FH is a goalie you know, so anything u have to say regarding that position is automatically wrong. Even if you agree with him. A paradox..."
Now this is the kind of sound logic I can agree with 100% of the time.
Comparing Sabourin to Hasek may be the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Hasek was considered the best goalie in Europe before he came over to the states and had tons of experience in International play and starred in a few Canada Cups. A couple of years ago, Sabourin was serving nachos at Wheeling Nailers games.
johnstown chiefs, you mean
Oh, and concerning Hacksaw... I think he may be open again... It appears that We Bleed Teal closed up shop.
"johnstown chiefs, you mean"
No, I wouldn't insult Denis Lemieux like that.
"Only a select few will get that."
I got it. I thought exactly the same thing when I read that.
