Hat Trick City. PENS WIN

A great day for a cocky-ass smile

[Picture+21.png][Picture+18.png]

It was Sykora's night. Case closed.
In case you aren't aware, Sykora had scored two goals in a game 38 (44?) times and never got a hatty.
This game changed all that.

But the Mega Powers were working behind the scenes.
If this was your late '80s NHL, we would see at least 10 games like this a season with Bing and Geno.

There were more tricks being turned than on Penn Ave.

The powerplay gets going.
The Islanders get pulverized.

Hard to assess the defense and/or John Curry here.
When it's a runaway, game plans go out the window.
The Islanders just started getting frustrated and abandoning positional play.

But this game should serve notice as a big F-U to message-board trolls, doubters, and bandwagoners.

For every 4-1 loss or blown lead, games like this make statements. This is why you have to get through the tough games. Because games like this are fun, in some ways poetic.

Especially when it is against the Islanders.

Philly on Saturday.

Well, gentlemen, that hill is steep. It's rocky. It's bare. To come straight up it is impossible. No. The Philly army is going to swing around. It's gonna come up through that notch right over there. It'll move under the cover of trees, try to get 'round the flank. And gentlemen... *we* are the flank.
Gentlemen....God go with you.

Nothing was going on early. Actually, a lot was going on. Whistles were about as rare as a straight man at Town Tavern.

Pascal Dupuis ended a marathon stretch of the game after taking a nice feed from Satan.
He skates in, has an hour to line it up, and he rips it.
McDonald was out to lunch. 1-0.

A potential snowball had a chance to start rolling afterwards when the Pens got a powerplay.
And then they got another PP. And then another one.
They pooped on the first PP.
But they were set up with a one-minute 5-on-3 with the last two.
And then Witt took a penalty.
Which resulted in the Pens essentially getting two full minutes on a 5-on-3.
Malkin will score one of the biggest goals of the year on that ad nauseam one-timer.
But not this time.

Satan
2-0.
Sigh of relief.

They still had a week on the power play remaining. No dice on that.
What happened after the Islanders killed that penalty speaks volumes of Curry.
He was cold as ice and had to stop Guerin point-blank. Big save.

In the grand scheme of things, giving up a goal by the end of the period would be disastrous.
And it had the potential to be. Mark Streit just dominates Curry with a slapper. 2-1

Oh, no.

Oh, yeah.
Petr Gunn puts Old MacDonald in the Sharpshooter.

3-1.

And then Boucher from way downtown.

4-1.
Pens blow this lead, meet us at the Smithfield bridge.

[Picture+8.png]

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

[Picture+5.png]

Some french guy comes out to play goal for the Islanders.
Malkin drives the Pens to the bank for some insurance. 5-1.

The teams traded penalties halfway through the period.

[-10.jpg]
The Pens jumped on their back end of the power play, and Petr Gunn was there again.

[Top-5 PS ever--thanks to JB]
6-1.
Hat Trick watch was on.

Two minutes later, we reached the HALFWAY POINT OF THE GAME.
And wait. Sykora got the hatty!!!!!!!!
Horrible whistle. Poor Petr. Seriously.
He looked like a kid again thinking he had finally gotten it.

Never fear. The Pens got a PP at the back end of the second, and HCMT sends out Sykora.
Crosby just waits and waits and waits for Sykora to get open.
If you followed Sykora that whole shift, you are not alone.

7-1.
Jesus

-The Skank--

Andy Sutton goes headhunting for Satan after that. Seriously.
A blatant attempt at an elbow to the head.
No dice on the PP.

At the end of the second, Dupuis puts in a sweet pass from Staal. 8-1.

The horn blows, and no one knows if the Islanders will even come out for the third.

Vomit.
Kill yourselfblog

[Picture+8.png]

[Picture+6.png]

A lot of fanbases would have left to beat the traffic.
A lot of people would have stopped watching.

Not us, man. The way this season has gone, watching the third period was a dream come true.
Not to mention Dupuis needed another goal for the HT.

The Islanders actually give up. What a gutless performance.
Andy Hilbert tries to be a dick, but whatev. Pens are just toying with the Isles.

Dupuis is getting set up on every play, but no dice. Pens even get a power play thanks to the hapless Doug Weight. Was he in the penalty box all night?

Richard Park doesn't want to lay down like his teammates and kills the penalty.
Looks like no hat trick for Dupes.

After Andy Sutton scores somehow, the Isles gets a powerplay.
Cookie Monster breaks out on a 2-on-1.

What a pass to Dupes.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
9-2

--Daver--

Bill Guerin starts crying and leaves.

Chants of "We want 10" fill the arena.
No dice.

MISCELLANEOUS
  • This one's for Volek.
  • Lack of game pictures = the animated .GIF of Sykora scoring eats bandwidth. Worth it.
  • Seriously. Close this tab if you start going other places.
  • You never know what is going to happen when you go to the Mellon. What a night.
  • What was with Steigerwald throwing Mystery Alaska under the bus? Conflict of interest. Should have won an Oscar for Sudden Death.
  • You don't want to go to bed after games like this.
  • The Islanders blow.
  • Why does it feel like we are forgetting about something?
  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Dupes get shaving cream.
Potash doesn't blink.

Go Pens

I'm not sure what I liked the most about this game (after the hat tricks, of course!): the fact that the boys dished out a behind-the-woodshed beating, or the fact that the scoring came from all levels (I mean, seriously, Scuds having a 2 point night?!).

I didn't sleep.

Probably because of homework.

WOOOOOO.

Kimberlass said...

Petr Sykora deserved this more than Sean Avery deserves to be ostracized from civilization. Which is really saying so much.

Sykora says in his post-game interview that it was Fedo's goal that went in and was called off.

...He also says that the hats are going "to the kids. I don't know where, but the kids somewhere."

Kids of somewhere, I am jealous.

debrisslide said...

Still no sleep.

One of the most epic nights of my life. Can I write a paper on literary theory by 7AM? Of course I can, I HAVE THE FEVER.

Stilly said...

What a game. Just complete domination. It says a lot about this team to lose tough like they did in NJ, then come back and rape the Islanders like that.

stokes said...

While I understand that the Isles are an NHL team, this should happen every time the Pens play. They are awful.

Watching Petr celebrate is what life is all about.

I'm still waiting for the day when an Anthem pic is from ice level. See if HCMT has an iphone and send in the requests.

Sick win, I just about shit my pants when I saw the score on nhl.com. Hell, I would watch the highlights but they're probably like 15 minutes long. My attention span doesn't run that long.

Keep up the great work guys.

ahhh!
i am so proud of those boys.
coming from a 4-1 defeat the other night, to a 9-2 win!
how amazing.
and seeing syko's and dups smiles were such a joy!
i hope everygame is like this from now on. they're pumped from winning, and they've got the energy, bring it home against philly boys!

I could watch Sykora's reaction to his HT on the highlight reel for a long time. It was just purely awesome to watch. I am so happy for the guy!

And grrr, wish I had game plan B. I swear game plan A sees most of the losses ;)

I live on Long Island and I work with someone who also goes on the road with the Isles sometimes. He texted me "The Pens have the ugliest arena he has ever seen."

I replied with, you have the ugliest fucking announcers and your team is garbage.

btw, can't believe my photoshop didnt make it... :( :(

I gotta say, I turned on Justin.tv's Da Blues channel to catch the Blues game after ours, and of course some whiny-ass Isles fan came in crying about how "Sindy Crosby" had Gary Bettman call the refs and tell them to penalize the Isles 13 times. When I told him that the Isles were a joke and that they deserved to be penalized, and we had spent a fair share of time in the box, he started crying foul again. I wish I remembered his username there because it would be a perfect job.

What a game to get free tickets to!

Beautiful move by Dupuis for the hatty. Didn't know he had that in him!

McDonald never showed up for this game. I swear, every damn puck in warmups somehow went off of him and into the net. Wasn't his night I suppose. I'm glad we got to witness it.

Somehow in this melee Taffe was a -1. Damn.

What a game! Exactly what the Pens needed to get over this slump.

@ Ryan - I can't believe someone who's team plays in the Nassau County Mausoleum wants to try to job someone else's arena. Not that Mellon isn't ugly, because it is. Beloved, but ugly.

Some of the most fun I've ever had at a game. Watching Syko and Dupuis get the trick and how the rest of the team reacted makes you see how tight this group is.

Anyone know who got Dupuis with the shaving cream...it was a solid effort.

On to the Cryers

Go Pens!

I concur... what a game to get a free ticket too!

Great meeting up with Coffeytalk during the intermissions. (Thanks for the smokes too!) What a human.

I must've hit Mach 2 going down the stairs when Sykie scored the hat trick. I'm way too high up to get a hat down without bolting down the steps... but I swear I was halfway down by the time he shot it. My poor sister had no clue what the hell I was doing.

My poor hat. I had only had the damned thing since Opening Night. Well worth the sacrafice.

P.S. @Raybin: Ichiban means "Number 1" or "The Best"in Japan! (Unless you're talking about the beer Kirin Ichiban, which tastes like a dry dry version of the Beast.)

dying alive said...

Curry man is Ichiban!

He's a chain of hibachi restaurants?

Raybin said...

Does anyone watch TNA wrestling? Christopher Daniels?

He used to wrestle in Japan and he had a character called Curry Man. It was more of a comedy character than anything else. Anyway, he'd often give wacky speeches after his matches and "Curry Man is Ichiban!" was one of his catchphrases.

Helpful illustration

Also Steiggy talking about how he gets checks for $3.14 every time "Sudden Death" airs was all business.

That was for sure one of the best games I've ever seen-- and I've seen a lot of them. Once in a while, you need a blowout when you have lost your last 3 and your morale isn't in top shape.

Where was the love for Letang on the post though? I thought he was pure clutch action last night. I can't believe how much better he has become this season.

Also, does anyone know the guy who sits in A12 at Mellon and wears the Slegr jersey and wig?

I went to the last game where they played the Devils at home and that guy was heckling Clemmensen through the photographer hole in the glass-- I can only imagine what he was saying last night.

Best game this year?
The Isles= a team that is ranked 29th.
The Gorton's fishermen gave up after it was 4-1.
As stokes said,"While I understand that the Isles are an NHL team, this should happen every time the Pens play."

This game may make my top 4-5,only because of the HT's,but the Detroit game, imo, was the best game of this year.

Remember.
A 30th ranked team beat the 3rd rank team last night on their home ice. I am sure some Bolt fans think they have turned the corner and are playoff bound.

If the Pens lose tomorrow, the line up @ the bridge will start.

Stilly said...

Yea Raybin.. I definitely didn't see that coming. Kudos for the suggestion. Chamberlain is definitely bad ass.

Just a side note.. I don't know if you've watched both Gettysburg and Gods And Generals, but the guy that plays Stonewall Jackson in Gods and Generals is the same dude that plays George Pickett in Gettysburg. That's awfully confusing from a continuity standpoint.

dying alive said...

@ wilsmith - My office firewall blocks us from failblog. I do love the irony.

I've never seen Gettysburg. I'm too afraid because if it isn't historically accurate I'd flip out.

Stilly said...

@DA

Gettysburg is about as accurate as it can be. They got the geography, formations, and the officers right. Other than that I suppose you'd have to have a history degree to know the details... which I'm guessing you do.

The movie is based off of the book Killer Angels, which I've read. It's a damn close representation of the book.

@ Stilly - Yep, I have a degree in history. I'm really not a big war buff at all but the Civil and the Revolutionary are kind of the exceptions to the rule. Still, as long as it doesn't differ to a ridiculous degree from real events (I'm looking at you, Pearl Harbor and Troy) I would probably like Gettysburg. I'll give it a shot one of these days.

If Curry is reassigned, Fleury must be dressing tomorrow even if he doesn't start. Right? Right?
