Fleury is the backup for today. Back in the lineup, but there's no need to rush him back in and risk another injury, especially against these clowns. One more game by Sabu won't hurt. They don't play again until Thursday night, so you can get MAF another few days of rest and then get him back against Atlanta.
Sabourin better settle the fuck down though. He's fighting the puck too much right now.

Sabourin has played admirably since MAFer's been out. But I can't wait til Fleury is back and making those saves. (And yes, I still would've started Sabourin today).

Sabu's played about as well as anyone could really expect. He's got holes in his game and the longer a goalie like that plays, the more those holes get exposed.
Sabu's weakness is rebound control and covering up the puck. Opposing teams are crashing the net on him and getting the puck lost in a crowd. Pens defensemen aren't doing him any favors - they could do a better job tying guys up in front and getting to those rebounds (the latter is where we're really missing Gonchar...he's very good at corralling those rebounds in front of the Pens' net).
Times like this is when we really miss Gonch and Whitney. I'm not jobbing our defense, but we need a D or two who can hit the net. I love Brooks & Scuds, but those guys couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat.
@ pops - I agree, the Pens look lifeless and you can't blame the refs. But if they're not going to call blatant trips, they shouldn't be calling ticky-tack crap on the Pens. Either call everything, or don't. Just be consistent.

Having a losing record doesn't make a goalie good, even if he is a backup. Conklin was a third stringer last year and came in and won games. Sabu did that at first but has been total crap since then.

With all due respect, Sabourin has a 2.20 GAA and a .921 save percentage. Those are some solid numbers - as I said, about as solid as you could ever expect from a backup goaltender over 15 or so games.
Take those numbers and put them up against his record. You're right...he's 6-7 overall, given that two of his losses are OTLs. If he's stopping 92% of his shots and giving up about 2-3 goals a game, that tells me the team isn't doing a great job providing support for him offensively.
The numbers support it. In the games he's lost, the Pens have managed more than two goals just once - the loss to Buffalo on December 8.
I think the problem sits more with the lack of secondary scoring. When opposing teams have been able to take Sid and Geno off the scoresheet, the team isn't generating enough offense to bail Sabourin out.
It's been magnified lately as Sabourin's play has tailed off over his last seven games played.

I'm not blaming the refs because the Flyers are up 2-0. I'm blaming the refs because of their look at me mentality ruins games across the NHL on a daily basis. Instead of letting the players play, they have to get their fat faces on TV. I don't care if the Pens were up 2-0, I would still be commenting on how atrocious the officiating is.

It's been a crazy few weeks here at Chica Central. Being out here, if I have any errands to run after work I don't get home until the third starts or later. That and there's been a lot of stuff going on with the booster club for my junior boys too.

totally agree with you on the secondary scoring. outside of sykora we don't have a single winger worth crap. shero has gotta pull a rabit out of his hat to give sid and geno something to work with. still, sabu may have good numbers and he may not be getting much scoring, but at the end of the day i dont think a guy with a losing record deserves credit for playing great hockey.
I'm not crazy about those Flyers' 3rd jerseys, especially - as mentioned before - with the way the nameplates are done on the back.
But I can think of one other team that used that nameplate style and made it work.

I think the issue with Sabourin has been bad goals.
As I said, I don't think the team has helped him out in some of these games. But it's seemed that some of the goals he's given up have been really bad goals or untimely goals, and the team just isn't responding as well around him.
He seems a little too skittish right now (as I type these, he comes WAYYYY out to play another rebound off the boards). The rest of the team picks up on that a little bit...they see him fighting the puck and maybe try to do too much (play too conservatively?) to try to help him out.
That little sequence was the best the Pens have looked so far this game, and they were still missing the net.
