Last year, two of the best games of the season were against the Caps.
Ovie had the hatty. LINK

Washington got to the playoffs last year.
They were an Ovechkin wrist shot away from getting past the Flyers.
They are the sexy pick to win the East this year.
And instead of hating the Capitals and their fans for their success,
we have embraced the fact that, if not already, this WILL be the Pens top rival,
with many playoff matchups on the horizon.

No. Just like a Flyer fan would have said to one of us in the 80s, you can't have a rivalry when it's so one-sided.
On paper, we SHOULD be rivals. We were good at the same time and bad at the same time and got good again at roughly the same time.
And granted, it's not like we blow them out. Last year, two games went to overtime, one almost went to overtime, and the other was decided by one goal. I attended all four of them, and each was entertaining and fast-paced. And the Caps certainly seem to get pumped to play us.
But even with all that, we almost always seem to come out with a W, and until that karma shifts, we can't be rivals. To be a rivalry, Pens fans need to look at the Caps on the schedule and think "Ooh, tough game" instead of "I wonder how we'll get them this time!" Caps fans need to see us on the schedule and get pumped, not seethe.
We did used to have a rivalry, back in the Patrick Division days. I won't be surprised in the least if we get there again, maybe even by the end of this season. But right now, the answer is still no.
Right now, we're not the Caps' rival. We're their foil.
I'm still going with my Crosby goal prediction.
And I'm gonna say a Sykky goal as well.

So frustrated. The Pens have yet to put together a complete game. They play great for a while, but have seem to manage to lose all momentum for at least 1 period each game this season. It's hard to win games if you don't play out the whole thing. It's early and there's plenty of time, but it's frustrating after playing so well and being 2 goals up, then totally losing it all in the 3rd.

@FH: I don't know. The second game against Ottawa was worse with it being the second game of the season and all. That game showed the Pens are in trouble this year. I still say the Leafs are winning the Cup. They'll take the Pens in a blowout, 6-1, on Saturday. The lone goal will be scored by Kris Beech.

Thoughts, dudes...
1. Note to self: Avoid LGP tonight. It's not gonna be pretty.
2. Third period sucked. There's no way around it. It sucked. The Pens had that three-goal lead before the midway point of the game and I cringed because you could almost see this coming. When you still have 30 minutes to play, you can't sit back like that against a team like Washington.
3. Sid was a -3 tonight. Two assists as well, but ouch.
4. Bad coverage by Letang on the first Washington goal (who got caught watching the puck while Fleischmann was standing in front); excellent shot by Semin on the second Washington goal; questionable turnover by Sid with the spin-o-rama pass that helped lead to the third Washington goal (as pointed out on NHL Live); good shot by Gordon on the fourth goal.
5. I'm starting to wonder about Staal on Malkin's wing. I'm just not sure. I think you have to give it some more time, but Staal just doesn't seem to have that touch right now with the puck that you want to see a winger have.
6. Fact: Whitney and Gonch are still going to be gone for a long time. Nevertheless, Therrien needs to find a way to generate some offense from the point. If nothing else, I'd like to see him start running the offense from further down in the zone...maybe along the boards or even off that cycle and get the defensemen like Goligoski and Letang to start pinching.
Not panicking...we're gonna have games like this. Just a little concerned and a little shocked because the energy level on the team seems to be a little bit down for some reason. I think they need to simplify things a little.
I'd love to see them come out flying Saturday night.

This game sucked but you knew it had to happen. It was heavily anticipated and we broke out with a decent powerplay that was made phenomenal by the shittiness of Jose Theodore. Then the Caps got something going and we forgot how to play even strength hockey. IT HAPPENS. If we'd had more shots on goal in the third period, we probably would have won 4-3 instead.

It's nice to see Sid shooting more when the opportunity presents itself. He's still sometimes passing when he could shoot, but at least he's working at it. Not that I don't like him passing, but it just seems to me that sometimes he passes too much often when he's got just as good a shot as the next guy.

I'm officially on the trade Staal bandwagon. I know he's a good defensive player but he's not Bob Gainey or Guy Carbonneau like some make him out to be. He's just an albatross on that 2nd line, he just has no offensive ability. He reminds me more and more of Wayne Primeau every game. Trade him now before the rest of the league finds this out. The reputation this guy has, you could get a great player in return.
