The Mellon Arena never looked as sweet.
Sure it is old, sure it is cramped, sure it is outdated.
But it is our home, and for 40 nights a year starting tonight, it's the best place on earth.
For three hours we can get away from all our troubles.
The last time we saw a game here, we know what happened.
But that is history now. A new season is here.
It will be funny to see some people, who jumped on the bandwagon last year, flipping out when the Pens give up a goal, or lose at home.
But for those who have been here before know whats going on.
This is a grueling marathon, and nothing gets decided in October, November, December, January, Feburary, March or early April.
But these months must be used for good. Home ice advanage is huge.
You have to wonder if the Pens would have had home ice in the Finals, would they have maybe split the first two games?
For us, these games must be used for good as well. The timing of bathroom breaks, nacho runs, and smoke breaks doesn't happen over night. It is a process that has to be fine tuned, so in late May it is like tying your shoes.

I also hope that at least some of the Pens' road games are among the ones that get the home/away feed option on Center Ice this season. Of course, the feed option only seems to show up on lighter nights on the schedule. Steiggy and Errey aren't perfect, but they're still better than most of the other TV crews for US-based teams.

Staff in mid-season form already.
I fucking love the Igloo. It's just old and just crappy enough to have a kind of mystical charm no other arena I've ever been in has. My eyes will mist when they blow it up in a couple years. (But they will be big, manly tears so it's all good...)
I certainly hope the new building has nearly vertical steps in its upper reaches so I can continue to feel like Jimmy Stewart at the end of "Vertigo" while trying to make it to my seat without spilling beer.
Doc Turkleton is a fucking beast. But we all knew that.
This is the REAL start of the season. A split in Swedejoke suits me just fine.
There will be times when Fleury will be all over the place, hopped up on talent and PCP. There will be times when he gives up 5 goals in 2 periods and gets pulled.
There will be games where Malkin has 6 points and then stretches where he can't even see the net, much less get a puck into it.
There will be games where Free Candy and the USS Hal Gill will crush bones like glass. And then we will see games where Orpik pursues a hit instead of the smart play or Gill is too slow and ponderous and they blow it.
On and on and on...we'll probably hear as the fortunes of the Pens wax and wane over the coming months people vibrating between extremes such as:
"Satan is the best free agent signing ever!"
"Trade Staal, what a joke."
"What was Shero smoking when he gave an extension to Kennedy?"
"Godard rules Laraque's sorry ass."
"Don't re-sign Sykora to an extension, he's done."
"Couldn't we have just given Ruutu his three year deal? Who is this Cooke guy anyway?"
"I'd go gay for Max Talbot."
Most of those hysterics will come from people at LGP. Except the last one. Mmmm....yummy Max. (Did I just say that out loud?)
Anyway...
Let's keep perspective here at CBlog. Because we rule. Because we're the most badass, witty bunch of hockey fanatics anywhere across the glorious expanse of electronica founded by Al Gore. (Except me...someone's gonna have to ride herd on me, because I'm apt to fling off on a tangent and make an ass out of myself.)
We will job the shit out of Rags, Cryers and Craps fans and it will be a thing of beauty.
We will watch road games on TV and whenever the Pens score we will hear John Barbaro in our heads (THHHHHHHEEE PITTSBUURRRGGHH GOOOOAAALLLLL....) Let's face it, no other P.A. announcer in the league even comes close.
When bored, we will go to YouTube and watch clips of Mario ruining the lives of Jon Casey and Andy Moog and chuckle.
We'll get together for wings and sandwiches and games and gorge on food and beer and hockey to levels that would make Caligula turn his head away in horror. (Again, with the exception of me.)
And, of course, Charlie will make out with the Senators a lot.

Sorry in advance for not getting off the "Gamecenter = fail" topic, but I do have a question about it.
Since somebody mentioned Center Ice, I thought I read something over the summer like if you bought CI, you got Gamecenter with it." I may be wrong, and I'll admit to not doing much research on the Gore prior to posting this, but if this is the case, you can bet that I'll be transferring from one package into another.

Twenty-four years ago today, Mario Lemieux played his first ever NHL game, scoring his first goal on his first shot, on his first shift.

if you can't get anything else to work, yahoo will be showing the game. i lost my paper that showed me how to make a link, but just go to yahoo sports, then nhl, and the scoreboard and you should see a camera under the nj~pens box score. click that and voila! the only problem is it will be a few off and you never know who's broadcast you're going to get, however if you're like me in the wrong side of the continent (or world), better than nothing eh?

One of these days Brodeur will retire. Until then, he will continue to be difficult to crack a puck past.
Although Weekes is capable, he just doesn't have enough defense in front of him to keep him from getting raped. Brodeur is one of the few goalies that can handle a craptastic defense.
Anyways, that means were now 1-1-1. Kinda sucks, but its early in the season.
Oh, and Sykora needs to come back soon... putting Syd on wing isn't a good situation.
Oh, and I was cheering for the Sens tonight too (Yes, I feel dirty, but the enemy of Detroit is who I cheer for... unless its Philadelphia, then I just cheer for Detroit to lose.) and they lost to Detroit.

I don't know why people are bitching about Brodeur. The Debs could have brought Chris Terreri out of retirement and won tonight. He played almost zero part in the win.
As far as snoop goes. It could've either been a Fleury or a Whitney jersey. I'm going to guess Fleury since its easier to find. It could also be a custom jersey since he has been known to wear a "Gin and Juice" jersey with the number "94" on it.
It wouldn't surprise me to see him in a jersey, he is a huge NHL fan, he just really doesn't admit to it directly due to his rap career.

To be honest, I root for the arena to blow up when a Philly v Detroit game happens, but I tried not to say that due to the black helicopters that result from the Patriot Act ;).
The playoff run last year taught me not to take these regular season losses hard. 3 years ago, I'd be devastated over this loss, now you take everything in stride and just view the bigger picture. Pens have always been a slow starting team, 3 points in 3 games ain't too bad.

Couple of thoughts on tonight's game:
1. Sighted at Mellon tonight: a Surovy jersey.
2. MAF is a beast.
3. HUGE thumbs down to the crowd tonight. It wasn't the most exciting game ever, but they didn't even get into the pre-game stuff all that much.
4. THE PENS AREN'T MAKING THE PLAYOFFS!!!1!!1
5. I don't claim to be a professional hockey player, but it seemed like they should have taken more than 15 shots in three periods + overtime.
6. I can't wait to go to LGP tomorrow and count the number of times the word "putrid" is used.
7. Some choad hung a McCain/Palin sign on F balcony. I don't really care who is voting for who, but a Pens game isn't an appropriate place to get political. Conversely, there was a disappointing lack of signs involving Satan.
Eh, just got home. Missed the game.
Doesn't sound like I missed anything I wanted to watch anyways.

Anywho, I'm still not worried about the Pens. Jetlag, people being out, new guys, whatever. Adjusting takes time. And there's still 79 games left. MAF was out of his mind and that can only lead to great things. And there were some really good moments tonight.
Kudos to Ziggo for a decent first showing.

im perty sure the pens are always out shot and still make a game of it. they will work out the kinks.
why would you root for detroit OR philly? or anyone in the eastern conf? just focus on the pens and let the rest of the league sort itself out.

If you're worried about other teams winning or losing this early in the season, you might as well schedule the triple bypass surgery now. It's just not worth. I don't start to seriously look at the standings until February.
I'm always worried about the Flyers losing, but that's only because I take so much delight in their suffering.

That's the Devils playing Devils hockey. When the Devils have to come from behind in close games, they play that system that forces a lot of neutral zone turnovers and they use a quick transition game to generate shots.
Like Flyer Hater said, this one is on the Pens forwards to generate better sustained pressure in the Devils zone. This is why the blind drop passes and unnecessary stuff like that can kill you against a team like this; the Devils are too good in transition.
The Devils have always been a good transition team, even when they had Niedermeyer, Daneyko, and Stevens, they also had the A line. When the opposition is constantly turning the puck over at their own blue line like the Pens were doing tonight, you're going to get burned.
It's way too early to care about losing.
But it still made my stomach drop to my feet when I got the text that we lost 2-1 in OT.
Out shot 49-15 = unreal.
