Someone once accused us Penguin fans of being paranoid.
It is true, to an extent.

Why?

Check out this most recent post on [LGP]

["Bad Vibes On Malkin?"]

The first line:

"This Russia-Georgia war has me worried that Malkin’s career in North America and those of other Russian hockey players may be in jeopardy."

You have to love August.

4 - 2

We don't know what is going to happen the rest of the season.

But when you walk into New Jersey and beat the Devils at their own game,
you did something.

Kris Beetch didn't show up for the game, which sums up his career.
[We stole that joke from someone in c-blog]

Bam. The Penguins jump was halted when Jordan Staal went to the box for a high stick.
They almost survived it, but Mike Rupp and his huge balls were no match for Daryl Sydor, as he popped it over a spread-eagle Conklin to put the Devils ahead.
1-0.
Ryan Malone=Stunned.

There's louder cheers for a priest coming out for a big mass than what the 8 people in attendance displayed after that goal.
As visions of an eventual 2-0 Devils win danced in your head, all you were left to do was watch Orpik get acclimated to his winger position.

-- Ryan O'Shea --
What a picture
There was an empty feeling going into the first intermission that no one can explain.
It was kind of like the time good friend and long-time reader Ronald McDonald got led away by the police for some inappropriate behavior in the playground.

If you've been alive more than a week, you know Jordan Staal has to step up in Crosby's absence.
Early in the second, he drives to the net, and the puck disappears.
Staal raises his arms, the referee points.
Whatever.

Count it.
1-1.

Why are faceoffs a big deal?
Because in the wrong hands, faceoffs can result in Mike Rupp scoring a cheap goal. 2-1.

Mike Rupp doesn't score all year. All of sudden he scores two goals tonight?
Not our year.
The Penguins weren't gonna make the playoffs after that goal; that's how bad it felt.
But a couple minutes later, the hockey gods sent Erik Christensen into the Devils zone.
The Devils make a huge mistake, Max Talbot flips the puck out in front.
Christensen gets the puck point-blank range in front of the net.
Without thinking, he turns Brodeur into a woman.

2-2.
We're not psychiatrists, but when a player instinctively goes to that move, confidence is there.
And the big knock on Christo has always been his confidence. Digusting move.
The Pens got their first lead of the night soon after when Malkin's line goes to town.
Tic-Tac-Malone.

3-2.
If Peter Sykora is ever on the third line again, we are taking a building hostage in Pittsburgh.
A huge one-goal lead going into the third.
Huge stat is revealed. The Pens are 21-1-1 or something when leading after two periods.
Powerplay Blog comes out flying.
Gonch makes a nice pass to Sykora. Post. Puck jobs out in front.
Ryan Malone eventually bats a puck out of mid-air past Brodeur.

4-2.
The clock moved over the 10:00 hump, and it was time for the Devils to go to their neighborhood pharmacy and pick up a prescription for their own medicine.

If you played with yourself in enjoyment as you watched the Devils flail about through the neutral zone, you are not alone.
Game.

"Pittsburgh has a great team, great people, great organization. I had to compare the two teams, and there's a little better chance to win the Cup in Detroit. I had a great time with Sid and playing on the power play with Geno [Evgeni Malkin], but the team in Detroit is something special. I know it's a short term, but we never talked about a one-year [deal] with Pittsburgh. We just talked about a long-term deal. I totally believe Detroit has the kind of team that can win it again."

more important than bing's 99 offensive awareness...

his defensive awareness is 92. compare that to zetterberg's 90 def awareness, and datsyuk's 85 def awareness.

just sayin.

btumpak said...

malkin could care less about this stupid war - he's more worried about his NHL09 ratings

Dan said...

no wonder no one answered my question/thought

with these olympics going on, got me thinking, who does everyone think will end up on the 2010 roster? it looks like it could be a promising team.........

Aron said...

there were definitely some screwy ratings..how the heck is TFK (Tyler Freaking Kennedy) rated higher than Maxime Talbot? And how are Crosby, Malkin, and poke-check Scuderi better at checking than Letang? I wish someone who watched this team rated it. Anyway, i'm still excited about it, has there been talk on this board of starting an online team comprised of Pensblog members? if so i'd be down.

Aron said...

also Slap shot accuracy and power. if you've seen any one game this year, you'd know Malkin is aces at both...but somehow Crosby is a 95 in SS power, and Malkin is just a 90. And in power Malkin is a 90 to Crosby's 88. I know they need to get Crosby's rating up there which is fine, but then they need to put an intangible category (call it Crosbyness) or something up there.

Sweetcheesus! said...

I love stroke 9.

Aron said...

my point was malkin should have been something like 96 at both. Crosby should be 80 SSA and 75-80 SSP

Natalie said...

I forgot just how ridiculous that Christensen goal was. If he played like that every game, he'd be a 40 goal scorer. Damn, all the talent, but not the confidence.

The day we boo Yao Ming because of China's sketchy record on human rights is the day we boo Ovie and Malkin because Russia is acting thuggish. (And since they have a history of mugging and shit it's ok that I said that!). Some Cap fan started a thread on this a while ago. People are people, governments are governments. And most people couldn't even find Georgia on a map if their life depended on it.

Whatev.

Dan - you talking US team or Canadian team?
As long as I don't have a shitface Roenick representing my country, I'll be happy.

why is darryl sydor a 95 in poise? Crosby an 80? this could have been that Crosbyness rating, but they messed this up too.

Let it be noted in your next "OlympicsBlog" - they gave out 100,000 condoms in the Olympic village for the athletes to use.

As Pops explained on the previous posts about the ratings.

The first column in the ratings is for Offensive Awareness (I think). Since Beech is a (crappy) forward and Orpik is a stay-at-home defenseman with limited offensive skills, it would make sense that Beech would have the higher rating in that category. There doesn't appear to be an overall rating anywhere -- suppose you'd have to key it into the game to get that one.

@Hip: It's a conspiracy ... The athletes really are the ones in charge of the communist government ...

Also, I like Roenick and didn't start liking him until his departure from Philly ... #1 because he got his jaw broken by Hatcher (bitch) and got up like a man and got off the ice. #2 He's a crazy bastard *laughs*

USA: Modano is definitely making it, that's a shocker! *rolls eyes* (If he doesn't, I will be an epic fail); hoping Malone; Kessel probably; Mark Eaton; Hoping Brooks Orpik as well ... uhh, surprisingly there are a decent amount of good American hockey players out there ... I'll think of more probably in random spurts like I do with everything else ...

Flyer Hater said...

Mike Modano isn't qualified to star in Mighty Ducks 4, let alone play for Team USA.

All guys who are either shoe-ins or potentials in my eyes, those are the only Americans I can think of off the top of my head

Well played sir.....well played.

I Have Kasparaitis said...

In all seriousness, Modano is a beast. Highest scoring American in the NHL does deserve some respect ...

Tim Thomas looks like our goalie or Miller ...

Sadly Chelios is American ... he'd probably bring a medal into his bar and let Osgood rape it ... so no go.

Patrick Kane, Erik Johnson, maybe Jack Johnson, Gomez probably makes it with Drury ... Hal Gill would be cool, as well as Whit (we do have a lot of American D-man and since they have nice chemistry together, they could be paired together)

Sadly, Derian Hatcher's an American, too. He's from the Detroit area *laughs*

@sexymexyjeffy: Watch it! You gotta realize the difference in teams these other players are on and their roles ... don't speak ill of Bugsy.

@Dan: I don't think about the Avs usually ... Stastny's likely to make it ...

I wonder if Patrick Roy did something like this...

DiPietro can't hear you, he's got a lifetime contract plugging his ears.

I Have Kasparaitis said...

Flyer Hater: I wonder if Fleury has fallen somewhere, too ...

I didn't say he was Roy, I said he wasn't bad. Tim Thomas can't hear you, he's got $1,000,000 and a Bruins uniform in his ears ...

DiP plays for what team? The Islanders. Who is the GM? Garth Snow. Who was the idiot who got him signed to that contract? Mike Milbury. Who did they trade to get him? Roberto Luongo. Why am I laughing right now? *smirks*

Flyer Hater said...

Are you really saying that if you had to win a game, you'd take that smurf who makes Roman Checkmanek look like a sound positional goalie over DiPietro who has tremendous skill, pedigree, and puckhandling ability?

I Have Kasparaitis said...

Jay Pandolfo - RJ Umberger - Brian Gionta

Brian Rafalski - John-Michael Liles

Ryan Whitney - Mike Komisarek

Hot news!

As some of you might know (and others might not), my father-in-law has been at UPMC Shadyside since Friday afternoon. Doctors had him check into the hospital on Friday after some tests last week revealed that he might have a form of leukemia.

Well, he does. Today, they confirmed the diagnosis that he has Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia.

That's the bad news.

The good news is that it can be treated. In fact, his white blood cell count which was near 400,000 when he came in Friday has since dropped to less than 100,000 and is still dropping to what would be considered normal levels. Even better, he's responding very well to treatment with Gleevec, a relatively new treatment that can send the leukemia into remission or at least dormancy without him having to undergo any form of chemotherapy.

Basically, he'll have to live with the disease the rest of his life, but the medication will keep it under control outside of some minor side effects and fairly regular blood testing to make sure his levels are good.

Even better than that, the chances are good that he's coming home tomorrow.

So I'd like to say thank you all so much for the prayers, thoughts, wishes, etc. I've been fortunate in that up until the last five or six days, I've always seen this disease from a distance. I spent a significant part of the last five days down at the Oncology wing at UPMC Shadyside and what you see there is humbling and eye-opening at best. At worst, it scares the shit out of you. That place has become home for many people, most of whom probably did nothing to deserve what they have to endure there.

It puts into perspective the great work that people like Mario Lemieux and the Lemieux Foundation do. And to hear the nurses and doctors tell us of the advances that have been made from year to year - some thanks in part to funding like that - makes you realize how worthwhile that work is, especially when it impacts your family directly.

So thank you again, everyone.
