In Pittsburgh, they boo the kid third baseman who had put up Roberto Clemente-type numbers until he was mysteriously traded.

You have to love it when sports writers in this town chastise us.
Not to mention they group all fans in the same boat.
We don't boo Jagr, never have, never will.
We know a lot of people that feel the same way.
We also know a lot of people who do Boo Jagr.
That's fine too.
But to say we all Boo Jagr?
Come on man.
Philadelphia heckles and taunts Sidney Crosby for no reason, but we're all knuckleheads?
They booed someone who was paralyzed on the field, but we are wrong to boo anyone?
Comparing the booing of Aramis Ramirez and Marian Hossa?
It doesn't make sense.
First off, is it even that well documented that people boo Aramis Ramirez?
Maybe someone was booing because he banged their girlfriend.
Calling us assholes- we assume that is 60 year old sports writer lingo for "knuckleheads"- doesn't fit.
Hossa sold the Penguins out, he was not a man of his word.
We owe him nothing, and we will boo him if we want.

As for the Nashville side of things, we booed Paul Kariya when he came back last season with St. Louis. The video "tribute" received some applause (being generous) and quite a few boos.

It's always nice when sportswriters turn on their own cities. The "sportswriters" here are too afraid to do that. That is, unless you're a Predators fan, then it's fair game.

Dear B Smizik and other editors,
I am writing in reference to B Smizik's column 'Knuckleheads' can't wait to boo 'traitor' Hossa printed on Sunday, July 20th.
I find it stereotypical and repugnant that you chose to lump each and every single fan of not only one sport, but of 2, to generalize as 'knuckleheads' the fan base of this city. I do not boo Jagr, my section (mainly season ticket holders) do not boo Jagr, so we've already proven you wrong. I actually tend say cheer him just in response to some of the booing, just to prove the point that at this point, the booing has gotten old.
B Smizik, you tout the numbers and success of Jagr as why to not boo him. That somehow the respect that someone should be shown is directly tied to their accomplishments for the associated team. They are booing him because he dragged the name of Pittsburgh through the mud in a national audience. Some members of this fan base, if anything, are full of pride and most likely to a fault. Some members of this fan base, are more hurt by a man and his words and chose not to forget it.
I also find insulting to compare the Pittsburgh fan base in large to the Philly fan base, in the same way you're citing stereotypes about Philly fans, you're evoking your own 'knucklehead' stereotype on us. And lets get a few things straight here, for one SOME members of the Philly fan base boo Sid any chance they can get. Sid has gotten "the numbers" and "the awards" that in your definition should garner respect. But that doesn't protect him from being the boo-ee in Philly, so it must be because Sid insulted Philly in some manner, mocked their city and sullied the name of their region... No? Oh he didn't do that... huh. So its hard for me to understand our lower placement in the knucklehead food chain when the subset of Pittsburgh fans that boo, at least do it because they were wronged in some way.
Now, onto Hossa. Does Hossa "owe" anything to Pittsburgh? - Nope. Should we expect the "discount to play with Sid" tag that seemingly every player in the league that comes here is getting slapped with? - Not in the least. I am not going to boo Hossa because of either of those two things.
But when a man as Hossa, himself says about his deal with Detriot, "...I know it's a short term, but we never talked about a one-year [deal] with Pittsburgh. We just talked about a long-term deal." it raises suspicion. First, you don't believe that Shero would have done a one year deal? Detroit themselves said they were shocked when Hossa's agent came to THEM asking for a one year deal.
Second, in this league, where the Pens lose a fan favorite such as Jarko Ruutu because he needed to get the security of a long term contract, somehow an elite level player isn't concerned about long term security? he only wants the "best chance to win the cup"?
Here's the reason some Pens fans will boo Hossa, he said he was focused on long term deals, that the length of the contract was his main focus. To turn around, see the salary cap rise as much as it did, and his agent having his Jerry Maguire epiphany, saying he shouldn't get BIG and LONG term money this year... that he should just get BIG money this year and improve his chances to get even BIGGER money for a LONG term next year, the fans lose respect for you.
Hossa said one thing, and then did another, because of the opportunity for more money. Does he have the right to make as much money as possible during his career? - Absolutely. But what he doesn't have the right for is respect after doing so in the manner that he did.
Respect is earned and lost in the same manner, through the actions and words of a person. Once its lost, its very hard to get back, ask Mr. Jagr.
P.S. I acknowledge your job is to sell papers and garner attention... perhaps you shouldn't do that at the sake of intelligence of the readers you desire. You sir, have lost respect from this reader, and several others through your recent activities.

Smizik may say that he geared it towards certain fans, but he didn't write it that way. If he's not intelligent enough to know how to put it that way through writing, then he should be fired because he can't do his job. He insulted the Pittsburgh fanbase.

I'm not gonna list my entire letter since it is long (probably even longer than longcat, which we all know is loooooooooong), but here's the closer.
That's part of the reason (jamming Shero until the signing deadline, mentioned earlier in my letter) the booing will probably rain from F level down to the glass. It wasn't that Marian took the money and ran. In fact, he took less than what the Pens were offering (per post-gazette.com) and what Edmonton was allegedly offering. It was the fact that he ran to the enemy. Again, completely legal, but I guess if you can't beat 'em, you might as well join 'em.
If you ask me, and that's only if you ask me, that is what a true knucklehead would do.
Instead of sticking with the team who he went to battle for, the team that was that close to raising the cup, he took the easy route. He took the route where he can sit back on a second line and not be the focal point. He took the route that most second rate unrestricted free agents took. The ones who are/were in the twilight of their career, like the Dallas Drakes of the league. The ones who got stuck on the cellar dwelling teams. It's no secret that Marian does not fall into either category. He's in the prime of his career, and yet took the route (although albeit under different circumstance) that Raymond Bourque took. Bourque asked for a trade to a contender. Hossa asked his slimy agent for an offer for not just the contender, but the reigning Stanley Cup champions.
So if we're gonna talk about knuckleheads, you may want to look in Detroit's media guide. His number is now #81, his name is Marian Hossa, but in Pittsburgh, we'll simply refer to him as knucklehead.

You don't realize how much faster the game is and how much harder guys hit in today's game than they did thirty years ago. I'm watching Bruins-Flyers from 1978 on NHL Network and these guys look like they're playing in the old Bridgeville roller hockey league I played in.
No wonder those Edmonton teams dominated. They played at a pace 20 years ahead of their time and none of these guys could keep up.
I think that picture the P-G uses of Smizik has to be at least 10 years old. When you see the guy on KDKA, he looks like a wax figure from Madame Tussaud's come to life.

Pirates lost their fifth in a row today, meaning they are right on schedule for dealing Jason Bay and Xavier Nady within the next two weeks and having justification to do so because they're no longer going to be within any realistic shot of the wildcard.
(Honestly, I won't be heartbroken if they deal Bay and Nady. Both are gone after next year anyway, and the Pirates desperately need to restock their high levels of the minors because Littlefield can't draft. They should be able to get a handful of good prospects for those two guys.)
I wish I knew more about this Smizik clown.

•MAF gets a 1 or 2 year arbitration deal.
•WB/S not ready for prime time players suiting up on 3rd/4th line + 5th or 6th D-Man
•Staal gets traded during season / off season since signing him would put the Pens in a Flyer-ish situation with no Cap Money.
So, THANK YOU, Big Poppa Pump, for letting King Shero lock up the Pens CORE for years to come...It would have been nice to see your #18 skating around for another 4-5 years with a Penguin on your chest......but I think things will work out better for the Pens and their future without you.

We were talking about the same today at our post-softball-quadrupleheader cookout (bunch of Pens fans on our team). I said pretty much the same thing you did - bringing Hossa back probably would've meant us waving buh-bye to Brooksie AND only being able to lock Fleury up relatively short term. There's no way in hell it would've allowed Shero to do what he did with each of them.
We'd have been mostly a two-line team, right back to dealing with the same defensive depth issues we did in 2005-06 and 2006-07, and we would be lacking in depth across the lower lines as well.
Shero staggered the salaries so we'll see some cap relief in each of the next few seasons. Sykora, Satan, Fedotenko, Gill and Sydor are all up after this year. That's a total of something like $13-14 million off the books, although I'd expect to see one or two of them back.
The following year, Gonchar and Eaton are off the books, so that's another $7 million freed up. Letang will be up for RFA status, so it might be time to extend him after that.

dark knight - holy shit, i still have a boner from it. i made a comment about just how damn good i thought heath was, and my friend used the phrase "too soon"........
oldman owns as gordon. if that movie on a whole isn't nominated for an oscar, i will be shocked. the script, direction, action, story, the philosophy, ethics, everything, i don't know how to describe it. nor can i say have i ever been so pissed at one part of the movie that it was ruined for me about an hour and a half in (it was all ok though). i just sat there saying, they just ruined this franchise. wow was i relieved. i have not been on the edge of my seat for a movie, well, ever. if i have to compare it to something, the movie "heat" comes to mind. i plan on watching the animated series on dvd every day when i come home this week.

Might be the understatement of the off season.
Especially would be lacking in the 'Physical' Defenseman role. I ♥ Hal Gill, but he's a different type of physical...more of a shutdown kinda defender. I think Orps might have found his game and has learned how to use his physical play to his advantage instead of putting himself in the doghouse and skating as a 4th line wing.

What a tool. I don't give a shit about Hossa. I wasn't that into him during the playoff run but could appreciate what he brought to the picnic. Someone should have told him that by saying Detroit's got the best shot he effectively blew up any chance they had. Karma's a bitch and the hockey gods don't like entitlement. Have you actually attended any games at the Wachovia Center? When I was there for game 4 of the Eastern conference finals I saw things like a line of five grown men lifiting their shirts to expose their nipples and screaming "suck this, Cindy Crysby". Another section had a young boy, perhaps 12 or so, holding a large banner that said "Crosby bangs boys". The vile filth that poured out of people's mouths was shocking to me, and I've been a veteran hockey fan and attended lots of highly emotional games.
So when you say Pittsburgh has it "all over Philadelphia" for "knuckleheads" I think you simply haven't been paying attention. Booing prior heroes may or may not be classy. It pales in comparison to the regular and frankly accepted behavior at Philadlephia sporting events. I won't even go into the urine showers I witnessed at an Eagles/Redskins game once. Why no one in the state or national media has brought up this kind of truly reprehensible behavior amazes me.

Single-best take on Hossa I heard came from Steigy after Hossa's press conference announcing his deal with the Wings. Hossa said something during that presser to the effect that he was happy because he was with a team that could help him win the Cup.

I seem to know more and more people who are more interested in talking Pens as time goes on.
I'm as excited as ever for the Steelers this summer and I even tried to get some Steelers talk going today. Wasn't happening.
I've said this before...these younger generations of sports fans in Pittsburgh are going to be every bit as tuned into the Pens as past generations were the Steelers. I don't think the Pens will ever supplant them and I don't think there needs to be this "one always has to be superior" sort of thing. I'm just making the statement that the Pens are winning over these younger generations of sports fans the same way the Steelers did 30 years ago.

I based it off of the original RbK EDGE jersey template. I made the liner curl and connect at the bottom, changed the chest curve designs, made the shoulder stripe come to a point, changed the sides and added the lace collar. Each color is editable to be whatever color I want. I am hoping to team up with Stephen to try the IHA tournament over at Icethetics.

Icethetics (formerly NHL ToL): A blog with logo tournaments, concept logos/jersey (coming back soon), graphics contests, jersey information, 3rd jersey updates, etc.
Direct link to the IHA project. You are given the team names and team colors. From those two things, you must create a logo. That's what Stephen is good at. Then eventually you can create jerseys and such. That's me. Just something to do, really. Woooo.

Family guy is pretty much at the bottom of the barrel now. It's dropped so far these past 2 years. I liked it when I first discovered it on DVD's but it's the same thing every episode.
