When I'm working I don't have a chance to post because I don't have time to keep up on it at work, and by the time I get off work and get home there usually aren't many folks on. I didn't find this site until the SCF, and didn't start making any posts until last week. I wish I'd found this site sooner :)

i was born into it.. my family have always been hardcore pens fans.. i still remember the 91-92 cup run and i was only about 6 years old.. then i lost touch with the team in the late 90s and came back in the past few years because some of my friends in high school/college reminded me how amazing it is! i consider myself a "born again fan" haha

I couldn't agree more kids, I have not lived in the Burgh for 8 years now spending 7 of those in the Philly area (kill me, glad I moved) and while I NEVER post it is so nice to feel at home with this website, no matter where I am at the time. Been reading them forever and the only thing I miss more than the Burgh are live Pens games with the home fans. Keep up the good work pensblog and cblog.

I'm not from Pittsburgh, I've never even been there...but I've liked hockey since I was a kid, and started out liking the Pens because my dad did (and hating the Flyers for the same reason). I've followed it since then, but not as closely as football because I've never really had the chance...being from Nebraska, I am a football-lover first. :) One of the many reasons to love the internet, the ability to follow things I wouldn't be able to otherwise.
I really started getting into hockey near the end of the 06-07 season. When my dad would pick me up from work he'd always have the game on in the car, and I actually started paying attention. I was never a big sports fan in general, but hockey just sounded really interesting to me. My dad told me I had to watch Sid play, so I decided to watch the next game. I've been hooked ever since.
I buy the Center Ice package every year to watch each and every Pens game.
This year was my first exposure to talking and listening to other people than the four walls around me in DC.
I loved it. What a special year to find out there are other out-of-towners committed to the Pens that I could read their reactions to each play.
My wife-to-be (15 days) was on one hand happy, because she didn't have to be the only one listening to my yelling. However, now she says I need a 12 step program to get over C-Blog.
Her famous quote..."How are they still posting, there's no hockey right now." I try to explain, it doesn't matter.
Great Pens Fan stories...
My first recollection is against the North Stars (the first Cup), and not knowing what was going on (I was only 10-11), but being so happy with everybody else.
I'll never forget the moment we won that first Cup, even though I couldn't give a shit less at the time.

Pens fans are EVERYWHERE!!! I also get center ice every year, greatest thing EVER, makes me feel at home to see the games, haven't missed one in years I have them all recorded and watch them after class/work it drives my gf nuts but she knows it means the world to me.

I know. My fiancee gets mad when she asks what I'm doing that night and I say, "Pens are playing ..." and she's all like, "Is that important?" I try to tell her that every game is important to me, but she has to tolerate me. Being from Pittsburgh herself (North Catholic), I am pretty much her father when it comes to me bleeding black and gold. She may not know what the Immaculate Reception is, but she understands an undying devotion to Pittsburgh sports.
My first hockey experience was a game against the Sabres I went to when I was 9 years old. My dad's friend had 4 tickets he couldn't use in the Igloo section. I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen, especially the fights. I honestly don't even remember if we won or anything like that, but it was one of the best times I've ever had.

@ penstone - I know what you mean about drifting away from the sport for a while...when I was in high school I stopped following sports completely for a while, and didn't start watching again until I was in college. Then, though, the home team games I got to see were Blues games, since I was living about 2 hours away from St. Louis at the time.
Since then about the only chance I have to watch pro hockey is if it's randomly on FSN (which here would show Avalanche home games, since we don't have pro hockey anywhere near here), if it's randomly on any other channel, or if I go to a sports bar that has it on. We have a college team here and a USHL team (the Omaha Lancers, once part-owned by Le Magnifique!), though...those are fun games. :)
Correction to last post, I saw Blues games on tv...I've never gotten to see a live pro hockey game. Me = fail.
One of my good friends from work and I were talking about road tripping somewhere this season to see a pro game...she's been a Pens fan for decades, and she reeeeeeeeeally wants to see a live Pens game.

im glad you understand.. some people give me shit because i kind of fell out with the sport, but like you i fell out with just about every sport except soccer, because it was my life.. then busting my knee made me have to find solace in something else, and that was tagging along with my best friend to pens games, she had season tickets (and i wish i could disown her for getting rid of them!!)

I hear you on the "every game is important" front so my gf (4 years now) actually bought me a dvd recorder so that I could watch the games after she goes to sleep, not a bad trade off since I live out of town and all my friends know not to mention hockey unless it is started by "are you caught up??" We do have one issue though, she is from Erie and moved to Northern Delaware, she thinks she is a Philly sports fan and it kills me but the first time I visited the family in Erie they had Steelers, Pirates and Pens blankets signs and everything you can imagine. I called her a traitor, she was mad for a day or two and then bought the dvd recorder, and now wears her pink pens hat I bought her too, I win!!
I love the fact that I am one of only 3-4 left standing. What a poor showing by C-Blog, but what a great showing by us!

haha yeah for sure.. they gave them away just a few seasons ago too, and for like dirt cheap too.. if i was as into it as i am now, i would be the proud owner of those tickets.. my friend AND me = fail!
YES!! The Igloo is a must for any Pens fan, it is our Mecca and even all of the players say it may be old and sad yet it remains a hockey icon. It is the oldest spot in the NHL and is also the only ever home of the Pens. What a place.

The only reason I have DVR is to make sure I had no excuses for me not going out to dinner and schmoozing. If there's a Pens game, I answer the phone, "If you're watching the game, don't tell me shit. So, what's up?" Normally they answer, "Alright, call me back in the second period." I am the only one of my friends away from home, so we play a good game of Cat 'N Mouse.
Best story...
One of my boys (Best Man) calls me, and I answer the phone as I just told you. He says, "Shit, call me when you see Ruuttu do something." That was the night he kicked Darcy Tucker's ass. I immediately called him flipping out! What a fight!

I have a statue in front of my tv. No matter how sweet the new arena is, it will never match up to the Civic Arena. Great atmosphere for hockey!

I would love to be able to come see a game at the Igloo...it's just a question of economics, especially with plane tickets being as ugh as they are right now. Driving from Omaha to Pittsburgh is not really feasible either. It stinks. About the best chance I have to see a pro game anytime soon is if I go see a Blues game while visiting the future inlaws...hopefully they'd be playing someone decent. ;)
They might as well just call the new arena Mario Lemieux Arena, since he's the reason we still have a team.

my story is that during the playoffs, my best friend from school is from LA and her friend came in to visit and she wanted to show her the burgh but she didnt know much about the area herself so i offered to take them out.. we went to mt washington and hard rock cafe for dinner, and it was a night when the game was in pittsburgh.. it was insane at the restaurant, they turned the sound off on the game for 2 minutes and i thought we were going to burn the place down! we had to leave when there was 5 minutes left in the game so i called my brother to give me the play by play until it was over.. my friends still talk to me about how amazed they were at the pens fever and how nuts i was acting during the game, but guess what? now theyre pens fans! (LA kings who??)

Yeah. I never did go to sleep like 2 hours ago when I said I was. I got on Flickr, uploaded all my pictures of Trav, and went to Tabblo and made a 6 picture poster print collage of him and bought it. It should be here in a week. $30 for a 20x30 poster doesn't seem bad. It's gonna go right above my bed . . .
I'm also going to make a huge photobook through HP with all my pictures of him and buy and send it to my mom as a surprise. I have to be up in two hours, though I did sleep for four hours earlier. Ugh. I think I'll try going to sleep again.\

I teach. I also lead trips across the oceans. I watch the first two games of the SCF. We're down 7-0 in score. I hate life. I tape every other game. I come back on a Thursday (Game 7 would have been on Saturday), and I watch games 3-6 all in a row. How heartbroken was I when I realized there would not be a Game 7?

I am an out of town fan from metro-Detroit and I got SOOOO much shit for being a Pens fan (strangely only after we met up in the finals) and I feel like the majority of it was from bandwagon wings fans which really pisses me off.
But I feel like the Pens can do better next year. And then all those people can just shut up.
Apparently I need to look into NHL center ice, because the highlights on the website just aren't cuttin' it.
And I love how Putin's wearing a shirt and tie under his uni in ALL of those pictures (even though I don't understand why he "plays" for Pittsburgh).

i'm about to hit the hay after napping on the couch, but another for the rap/penguins connection: LL Cool J wore a Jagr jersey and a Pirates hat in Back Seat (of my Jeep). Oddly enough, on the cover of the Back Seat single, if i recall right, he's wearing a ChiSox hat.
as for Iglooblog, i also have never been. The one time i was in Pitts it was the middle of June, but it did feel good to wake up and see the Igloo from my hotel room, very nice view. However i was lucky enough to see them play the Stars back at the old Reunion Arena in Jan of 01. I had actually gotten my tickets only a few days before Mario announced his comeback so not only was I finally gonna see Jagr, but Mario too! major bonus. In the end the Pens lost 5-4 in OT, but hey i got to see both Jagr score and 66 bury it, so i'm happy :)

@gcampbel08 - Nope, Omaha NE here. Our state addiction is Husker football, Husker football, Husker football (and then the CWS in June). At least folks around here tend to be pretty respectful of others' sports addictions (as long as it's not against the Huskers, haha), considering we basically have a college football state religion. That said, hockey's hard to come by. UNO having hockey, as well as the Lancers (USHL) doing so well, are doing a bit to raise the profile, though.
Arena names,
Firstly, I do believe it is 66 Mario Lemiuex PLACE not ave. I think that a name like BLANK arena at 66 Lemieux Place would even work, so long as it is a part of the name. I do not think we can expect him to even allow his name in the arena, he understands the financial impact of it. At the best we can hope for something like "Conoco Arena at 66 Lemieux Place."

Do not get me wrong, it is a risk. Go in with something like "(competition) is offering NHL Center Ice AND NHL net together, why am I paying for games that I am missing if I can trade providers and get them." Research before you do it too, in chicago it comes with some packages so it is a debatable point and the company you are with generally folds to keep you as a customer. i had centerice but missed several pens games last year because my cable service didnt offer NHLnet. they finally added it during the playoffs. to the sports package that also has VS that i was already paying 5 bucks/mo extra for.

On a totally unrelated note, I was randomly reading the page where ESPN has the bios for their anchors doing the TitleTown USA judging (I know, TitleTown = ugh)...I didn't realize that John Buccigross was from Pittsburgh. Also, Linda Cohn's bio states that she was a hockey goalie for the boy's team in H.S. and the girl's team in college. I just found those tidbits interesting.

I hate you because you scare me. I am planning on going for the college level but have done limited HS and considered it as a great spot. You have made me think more college, though, but just because I am apparently already teaching in the spot I considered!! I know you can choose alternate or historical jerseys for teams in other versions of NHL games, so I'm assuming you can still do it in 09 (e.g. Quebec jerseys for Colorado) so maybe for that simulation they were just using a historical Panthers jersey?

Arena funding is secured one way or another because the bonds have already been issued on them.
The only thing that remains to be seen is if the new slots licenseholder will agree to front their share of the funding or if that burden will ultimately fall to Mr. and Ms. Taxpayer.
That will depend on how ironclad the financial responsibilities are in that financing agreement (not sure how easy it would be for the new licenseholder to refuse to contribute to the arena financing).
