Are we mailing in the posts?
You bet your ovaries we are.

It is summer.
It is a miracle we still care.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

You know it is close to Steeler training camp when the Big Ben jokes start flying.
Check out some action of Big Joke hitting the crowd with a golf ball at some tournament:

This next clip may have Steeler Nation worried:

Upon further review, the guy in the boat that he overthrew had a Hines Ward jersey on.
But it wasn't Hines Ward because he wasn't holding anyone when they ran a running play.

We aren't going to bother to explain we are kidding, because if you don't get it by now, hopefully you overdose on something or contract a lifethreatening STD.

But please don't let it stop you.
We love reading "Why can't everyone be fans of the Steelers and Penguins" rants.
It gets us through the day.

Game #28
[Th-Th-That That Don't Kill Us. PENS WIN.]
[pit.png][cgy.png]
3 - 2
SHOOTOUT

David The Gnome once said:

"Look around you.
There are many things to see, that some would say could never be.
These things I know.
It's true, and I will tell you so.
They are there to see, if you believe."

Picture: David The Gnome, all business.

That quote might have everything to do with the Pens-Flames tonight.
Or maybe we just wanted to drop a David the Gnome reference.

Who cares.
Pens won, life is good.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Second period was brought to you by the chick from the JB Robinson commercials.

That face says,
"Give me diamonds. I'll have sex with another man while you work to pay off the diamonds."

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Go Pens

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

[Michael W]

"Pittsburgh has a great team, great people, great organization. I had to compare the two teams, and there's a little better chance to win the Cup in Detroit. I had a great time with Sid and playing on the power play with Geno [Evgeni Malkin], but the team in Detroit is something special. I know it's a short term, but we never talked about a one-year [deal] with Pittsburgh. We just talked about a long-term deal. I totally believe Detroit has the kind of team that can win it again."

looking back is hilarious to me at times. the conklin comment is why i love sports so much. everyone thought that losing fleury would be a huge blow to our season because then we'd have to rely on Sabu and a journeyman who handed Carolina a playoff game. months later we were praising Conks with playing an integral part of saving our season and debating on whether or not he should be forced to give Fluery back his job.
is it preseason yet?

penstone410 said...

CONKIN = combination jersey of Conklin and Malkin??! WOOOOOOOO!

Jonny Van Mundegaarde said...

That's what makes sports great Brandi, just when all hope is lost, some goalie with a proficiency for blocking conks shows up ready to go. I have a feeling Dupuis is going to be one of the players that steps up this year.

@ jon: i was kinda thinking the same about Dup's as well. i think now that he has time to figure out what his role on the team is he'll be great for us.

i think i was calling for a dupuis goal for most of the playoffs.
and now i have three more years to call a dupuis goal. hopefully he will net one in the first half of the season.

Jonny Van Mundegaarde said...

I keed, penstone. I knew what u were getting at ;-)

I know Dupuis' a professional, but it still would take anyone some time to get used to playing with a player of Crosby's caliber. Some time playing together will go a long way, but I also hope Sid gets the best possible players on his line, be it Pascual (using some people's pronounciation), Satan, Ruslan, or whoever. Training camp's going to be interesting.

J.S. said...

malsby is one letter away from being a joke that plays for the Wings. Any split jersey, regardless if it's two of the best players on the planet, regardless if they both play in Pittsburgh = epicfail

@sh0ez, anything with longcat gets a thumbs up from me. I wouldn't use the away jersey for the bottom half. I'd make him the length of the uniform. Afterall, longcat is looooooooooooooooooooooooooooong. Except maybe on me if I had that uniform, then he'd only be kinda looong.

Finally saw TDK last night. Still a little unsure about how I felt about the ending. Yeah, it leaves it open for a third one, but a few things were left unanswered. Definitely worth the hype, which you rarely hear from me. Only wish that I saw it on IMAX and that there weren't any 14 yr olds behind me saying "This is stupid". I wanted to turn around and say "You know, Wall-E is about 2 rooms down", but I didn't.

I think we can all agree that any discussion of FSP and Mike Lange is automatically prefaced with "this is in no way a comment on Paul Steigerwald..."

But, seriously, what tv executive replaces Lange and keeps his job? There's nothing that could justify it. I don't care if Mike got hammered at the Christmas party and took out his dick and wagged it at the exec's wife. You don't fire him, you say, "That's Mike Lange's dick, honey. You should feel honored."

Original Nathan said...

I know Conks saved the season and Fleury's injury opened the door for him, but that Calgary game was one of the ones where I wanted to see someone beat Therrien with a tire iron afterward. MAF shouldn't have gotten the start at all, since that game was the second of back-to-back road games.

One of Therrien's worst coaching decisions of the year, and if Conklin hadn't channeled Georges Vezina for three months, Therrien would've gotten his ass fired.

Team Lange/Steigerwald was always money. Smooth as ovaltine.

The only time they lost composure that I can recall is when that helicopter flew ass-backwards through the open roof of the arena. Game 7 of the finals, if I'm remembering it correctly. Steigy swore, but hey who wouldn't, right? FCC gave him a pass.

Dr. Turkleton said...

Lange deserved to be relieved of his TV Play x Play duties because of his Mikey + Edzo Comedy Show...that happened to be interrupted by the Penguins playing a hockey game. [I know for those early '00s teams: 'Playing' was a vague concept...but, Mikey you still had a job to do!]

Getting elected to the HHOF and having 2 Cup™ rings in his ears made Lange soff.
When the product on the ice deteriorated, so did his PxP. It became amateur hour in the booth filled with stories, creating new words and giggling like preteen girls.[GAME ON!] Hey, I don't need to hear a PxP guy tell me the score every 5 seconds or be Charlie Serious the whole broadcast...but their act just grew tiresome + annoying: like someone flicking your earlobe for 2.5 hours while you're trying to watch a game.
He has regained his old form the past couple of years while doing games on the radio, but he shouldn't bump Steigy from his TV gig since Steigy has been more than an adequate replacement.

At least the Pens have options for capable TV announcers. Steelers (TV) broadcasts always blow. Listening to Tunch, Wolf and Billy is great, but TV commentary for Steelers games is painful.

Dan said...

in all fairness, the nfl does have the worst announcing crews in all of sports. i feel dummer listening to them

Ian said...

@ dan: you're completely right about that

The worst by far is watching Steelers pre-season games on KDKA when the best commentary is from Jeff Verzela who, coincidentally, is the weatherman.

Dan said...

@ ian - i wish the insurance salesman would stick to his day job

shawnawwwesome said...

@OriNate

If that's the case then I take it back. The FCC should have fined Steigy for that, forced him to pay Jagr's gambling debts or something. Some a-hole yinzer falling on the scoreboard used to happen, what, two or three times a season back then? Cowboy up, Paul.

Ian said...

@ dan: the sad thing about the nfl is that the broadcasting gets exponentially worse the more national the broadcast (obviously Madden being the worst). While NHL on NBC games aren't always the best broadcasts, they're certainly better than watching Sunday/Monday Night Football

I would have liked to see what you would have talked about for those 3 years when the Pens were getting their brains bashed in almost every night. Lange's job during that period was to keep listeners any way possible and strictly calling the action to another 5-1 drubbing at the hands of the Flyers isn't the way to do it. Does anyone remember Lange before those years? He was always money in the bank.

My first thought was how much I hated Therrien for starting Fleury in Calgary in the first place. MAF had just started getting hot when he went down, and it looked for all the world like Therrien had killed the season running him out there in both ends of back-to-back road games.

Ah well, at least it all worked out. And Therrien got himself some job security.

(slow claps in Eileen's direction)

Exactly. Staff's comments in flashblog should sum it up. When the most recent "trade" for the Pens is being described in a headline as "whatev", then you know the offseason is slow.

What else is there to talk about?
- Sundin and Sakic are playing the not sure if I'm playing or retiring card, more Sundin and Sakic, so that can only be discussed so much. - We've insulted Miss Hossa as much as one group of people can within three plus weeks. Well, maybe not. Hossa jobbing never gets old.
- Although Sean Avery signed in Dallas, he still plays on the same team as P.B. Charlie.
- Jarda Jagr gone, Straka gone, Kapanen all gone overseas to play, manage, or both.

Now outside of that, there is very little to talk about, which is why topics such as DarkKnightBlog, ventblog (in my case), and gatheringblog has been as popular as ever. Will it be the case during the season? It's possible, but I think during the season you'll not only have Pens talk but talk about 29 other teams, WBS talk (which I gotta thank kaylaj again for checking where the arena was. JS = now wearing a WBS hat), and various minors and junior hockey chat. Or if that's not enough, camp should be starting within a few weeks.

If anything, we can all at least agree the offseason is entirely too long.

Was anyone complaining about The Dark Knight or other discussions in this edition of c-blog J.S.? You're making up a cause and arguing for it. I love some of the posters here who want to be martyrs.

Flyerhater, it wasn't those specific topics, but it was a comment that was made about the lack of hockey talk in general during the offseason. You may have not said it, but somebody about a week or so did.

That's what I was addressing, and yes it was a followup to what Eileen was typing.

I hope that meets your approval.

J.S. said...

dr p., from what I read, nobody has been approved for hfboards in a few weeks.

best of luck though.

Why so serious??

Some of this shit is like having the same bad dream over and over and over........

A quote i heard last night on tv.

Bad sex, bad whiskey and bad marriages, I never forget.

Loved the movie.

Speaking of no hockey to talk about, and pissing off the old timers, any of you following the most excellent cat-fight on the grand prix circuit (or whatever it is) between that Danika Patrick and that other chick?
Way cool...

He said, cat fight

tee hee.

Nope capt, can't say i have. Been watching a clip from 1989 and "the best that ever played the game"

His words, not mine but i agree with Him.

@akus

Sucks to be you. haha. It's the middle of the second period. Watching reruns will do until October.

@Murphy.

I also forget what the other broad's name is, but I was listening to Tony Stewart Live last night and Tony said that Danica had every right to be pissed and that the other woman was slow. It's too bad they didn't throw hands.

I Have Kasparaitis said...

@Stilly: He's probably defending her because she's trying to beat his record in fights in pit road, and he wants to rid himself of the image. She's a bitch and everything that happens isn't her fault. She tries to fight guys because they screwed up. Hey, do you notice all these things happen when you're around? Wow is she annoying.

akus said...

LOL, OKKKKKKay,

i need NHL network NOW.

I googled the story on the ahemcatcoughfightahem.

Are you kidding me??

IRL IndyCar Series driver Milka Duno took the high ground Monday after a towel-throwing, profanity-laced confrontation between herself and Danica Patrick during practice for Sunday's race in Lexington, Ohio. Duno, who says she tries to be a positive role model, wants to forget the incident.

A TOWEL -THROWING???

At least You could have whipped it up and snapped it her ass for christ's sakes.

Stilly said...

@IHK

Don't really care of Ms. Patrick eh? hahaha.

Tony said that the other chick has a rep for being slow. She only races because she carries Citgo (Citgo is from her home country). He was really letting her have it.. funny stuff.

and I hope you weren't bashing Tony Stewart.. I've never tossed a woman down the steps.. but I won't tolerate ripping on the man. hahaha.

akus said...

They didnt throw down hands stilly, they threw down towels!!

Tea towels? Hands towels?

Terrible towels?

Stilly said...

@akus

Word on the street is that it was a sweat soaked towel! OHH THE HUMANITY!!

I Have Kasparaitis said...

@Stilly: Danica annoys me on some many levels ... if I saw her walking down a flight of stairs I would trip and push her ...

This isn't the first time she has gone after drivers. This is the first one that is a woman (that I'm aware of.)

I'm a Stewart fan ... I'm not a big, big fan but I like him. He's hilarious and has anger issues *smiles* I still think his confrontation with Gordon is hilarious ... I wish I could have hugged him afterwards and told him to punch Gordon's face in ...

It seems I have some angry issues today as well *laughs*

jefe penguino said...

actually, Duno lightly backhanded Patrick with the towel and said, "I challenge you to a duel!"

I know this is a bit late, but I am still fuming over that dickhead Smizik, so I sent this letter off to the PPG.

"I have removed the links to your website from my front page on my web browser. I refuse to ever purchase your newspaper again, nor will I ever read it should I even see it laying around as long as you continue to employ Bob Smizik.

This man is very insulting to your readers time and time again. And since it is my choice, I choose to never read his garbage or anything else that comes from a company that would employ the likes of that piece of trash."

Not that they will even give a shit, but I feel better just saying it.

And just for the record, I am not one that boo's players. But dammit! if I should want to, it's my right to do so.

Dr. Turkleton said...

TIOPS' Unconfirmed speculation = Fortune Teller machine at Kennywood is on the fritz.

Happy 38th B-Day Sergei Zubov!

Possibly the 2nd worst trade in Penguin History, next to the Naslund-Stojanov fiasco.

Right Handed shot from the point?

Never mind.

Mario didn't like him in the Country Club...er, Locker Room.

Sergei Zubov = still in the league.
Kevin Hatcher = still can't get off the couch.

Flyer Hater said...

Go back and watch the Pens/Caps 4 OT game in 96, Zubov had to be on the ice for at least 70 minutes. Adding to that heroic feat, he was burdened with Chris "I make Scuderi look like Ray Bourque" Tamer.

Original Nathan said...

Not only did the Pens employ the wrong Hatcher at one point, they employed the wrong Mironov too (Dimitri instead of Boris -- although Boris was nothing special himself, he was still better than Dimitri).

Original Nathan said...

Oh, and the Pens had the wrong Pronger brother at one point too.

1990s Pittsburgh Penguins: the crappy brother will always have a home with us!

It's a wonder they never got Steve Kariya to complete the set.

Or Fedor Fedorov for the the hat trick.

@luvnmypens:

Sending the paper hate mail has to be therapeutic and I salute you for having done so, and yes, they probably don't care if you read them ever again, but they should. The days of most, if not all print newspapers are numbered. Whether they survive online in some form is another question, but I think a lot of them are going down. Smizik shouldn't work so hard at pissing off his constituency in the Steel City...but I'd like to point out that the bozo hair works for him. He must've had some outpatient surgery up at Presby on that other condition...

Pirates up 6-0, top of the seventh, so they have only three more half-innings to screw this up.

Stoosh said...

Considering his brother's penchant for excessive douchebaggery, are we really sure that Sean Pronger was the wrong Pronger brother?

For any other team, screwing up a 6-0 lead in the seventh would be impossible. But not for our Pittsburgh Pirates. They're not good at baseball, they're good at being bad at baseball.

Observations from Buccos baseball tonight...

Lance Berkman's nickname is "Fat Elvis". Best. Nickname. Ever.

How slow is Carlos Lee? Carlos Lee just hit a line drive to third that Jose Bautista appeared to bobble, drop and then kick about five feet away from himself. Yet he still ran over, picked up the ball and threw Lee out by about two or three steps. Carlos Lee, Aramis Ramirez would've beaten that fucking throw to first. Hell, I would've beaten that throw to first and I'm built like Drew Carey.

Stoosh said...

Another Buccos baseball observation...

They're playing this game in Houston. Pirates are up 8-1 in the middle of the 8th. The Pirates suck, but Houston has been one of the only teams in the National League that has been consistently worse than the Buccos all year.

According to the Weather Channel's website, it's currently 84 degrees Fahrenheit in Houston. The humidity is 69% and the dewpoint is 72 degrees, meaning this would be like watching a baseball game being played in the middle of a fucking swamp right now (the heat index is 89 degrees).

Yet there are still a ton of fans there at this game...at least from what I can tell of the crowd shots.

Do they have the roof closed for this game or do these fans just love them some Astros baseball?

Maria said...

I wonder how losing to the Pirates feels. Probably similar to being beaten with a club.

This game doesn't even look like a Major League game. It looks like a rec league game where both teams consist of nursing home residents.

And yet, I still watch. I think it's because I have a soft spot for epic failures. What else would explain my love for Vesa Toskala?

J.S. said...

I always called Berkman "Tony", since he kinda resembles Tony Stewart.

Denver Mountaineers
Edmonton Seahawks
Houston Comets

Are you in Pennsylvania? You can appeal summary convictions to your Court of Common Pleas. Not because you aren't actually guilty of the violation, but because the officer who wrote you up might be too busy to appear, in which case you get a dismissal. Worth considering, anyway.

I just saw a commercial for the next Entertainment Tonight episode that went exactly like this...

"On the next Entertainment Tonight...SHARK ATTACKS!...then, Heath Ledger's happier days..."

but the kicker is that voiceover lady said it in a manner that almost made it sound like ET wanted to convey that shark attacks and Heath Ledger's happier days were somehow intertwined. In a strange way, it was funny.

Then again, I probably just need to go to bed, because like Joose, I have no idea what the fuck is going on either.
