Why Hossa staying with the Pens makes more and more sense...
With the Rags out of the picture (though, one learns to never say never with NYR) here's a breakdown of the teams thought to be 'in the running' for Hossa....
Oilers - they don't appear to have the cap room anymore. 20 players signed for next year and only 4.3M left in cap space... plus they already have two right wings making over $4M/yr. They'd have to make additional moves to make it happen. (think they regret the big offer sheet to Penner now?)
Vancouver - plenty of cap space but he'd be stuck playing with the Sedin twins... The Canucknucklheads appear to be in rebuilding mode.
Canadiens - they've got room.. but just barely. Besides where does he play? They've already got a game changing RW (Kovalev) to play with Koivu but no second line center to utilize the likes of Hossa.
Boston - no space, nor a serious cup contender. They'd have to make some buyouts but would he really want to go there?
Detroit - The only real threat to come in and grab him. They have the room but they do have two big signees after next year (Franzen/Zetterberg) and not a lot of contracts coming off the books.
Staying in Pgh makes a lot of sense on multiple levels.
Hopefully he's waiting to clear out the suckers before he makes his moves...

Stock will rise as goal scorers fall off the table... but, conversely, money will soften as they first day hype dissappears and GMs start to regain their senses. Though, there may be more to Ryder than we know, he fell off big time last year but didn't appear to be injured. Perhaps word on the street is he's broken goods. Though I'd still take a chance on him.
The real winners are the unproven young players who's reputation drove out-of-this-world salaries (Finger anyone?)

Russia gets back at us for the Cuban missile crisis by stealing JJ. Hossa comes back or he goes to the Cads. No Hossa or JJ = Naslund as a Pen. After some of the batshit insane deals that D-Men are getting, Orpik coming back is a flip of the coin. Avery or Bert are Penguins in 08-09. The Fist of GODard and Satan will share a locker room. Those are my final prognostications (yea, I know they aren't controversial).

Pens and the '08 Cap
Looks like the Pens have roughly 18.6M in space for this year. If Fleury commands $4.5 we'll be left with about $14M to spend.
If Hossa signs with the Pens and takes the steep discount, he'll have half of that figure leaving the Pens with $7M. They'd still need a few wingers to fill out the roster.
They could keep a Ruutu if he takes $1.5M or so (he made just over $1.1 last year) and fill out a fourth line and a few healthy scratches with Baby Pens making $750K or less. So, guess $4M used for those moves.
Leaving them with very little to go after anyone else. $3M max perhaps... likely less than that.
I'd guess Ruutu's days are numbered (ditto Orpik) if the Pens are approaching anyone in the $3M range.

It's hard to justify throwing the cash when he only finally pulled it all together at the tail end of the season.
Granted, late season playoffs mean the most, but this is the first time he's been solid for a real length of time.
4.5 may be a lot, but I don't think it's out of the question.

If we just got Mark Eaton on a steal of a deal, we now have 7 mid to top quality defensemen on our roster with Goligowski waiting in the wings. As much as I like free candy, is it economically feasible right now to bring in Orpik at such a high price, and then risk shuffling Letang back to WBS or buying out Sydor's contract?
I'm slightly confused as to why we're still bargaining with Orpik, can someone explain?

$4.5M is a lot for him but considering that players tend seem to be given the benefit of the doubt in many of the Arbitration hearings, plus the fact that the Pens can't walk away from the deal and must accept it. We should assume something high.
Perhaps the Pens can get him into a long term deal at $3.5... that still only frees up another Million or so. He's young, he's been inconsistent but any young goalie usually is.
I don't see how we can let orpik go when we need D.
well matt, it's simple science. sydor will be gone, it's a question of how. scuds may be expendable. gill's contract is up after this year, as is scuds. goligoski may not be ready, and gonchar has 2 years left. figure sydor or scuds will be gone, and there's your slot. it's not always a bad thing to have seven d'men either. yes, we need help elsewhere but at the same time, when is the last time our d was as good as it was last year? there is a price to pay for it.
3.5 i'd be perfectly fine with, maybe even 4. anything after that, not cool though.

C'mon IHK... you know the right way to think. Think about a whole new old element for Jagr. He has won here and I think he might be as good as ever being back here with the guys we have now. Think about how lethal our scoring on the rush could be. Imagine Naslund, Crosby, and Jags coming into the zone. Needless to say I'm a little excited and nothing has happened yet.
Eric Goddard is from Calgary and he's little known because he wasn't used much more than patrolling the waters. Don't expect him to be a mainstay in the line-up every night.
