Half Past Dead

What does the title of the post mean?
Nothing, we just go to Steven Segal IMDB page when we need inspiration.

What an idiot.

How is it still July?

[The Hockey News] has a list of things hockey fans could do.

Not bad

Don't forget about the Center Ice contest going on over at [ Icethetics ]. The Penguins v. Wild poll closes on Friday. Right now the Penguins center ice is doubling up the Wilds, about 2 thousand votes to 1 thousand.

WAAAAAAA

Maybe Minnesota fans should wake up.

Yeah apparently the center ice vote is a contest in artistic ability and aesthetic appeal...

Alliteration aside, apparently fandom has no place in online voting. canucklehead is a dick, as evidenced by his name.

Thanks. Just spent 19 minutes of my life staring at that sign, looking for the "WWGRD" before I saw the Penguin on top.

These new posts in the middle of the day really throw me off.

I, too, stared at the sign for ten minutes trying to see where something Pens-related had been carved into it.

Even though it's been posted 700 times, that picture of Dawson is never not funny.

I posted this in the other thread, but since it died:

Do you think Shero might consider signing Nagy? I think he's underrated and we could get some good bang for our buck with him. He's always been consistent on my fantasy rosters.

I'd say slim. Shero likes the roster, and so do I for that matter.

Nagy? Really?
He's always BURNED me on my FH roster. Seems like he scores with ease one game, then is on IR for weeks.

Hey, I just read the previous blog and posts and noticed someone using my name in vane. Thanks to j.s. and dan for pointing out that it wasn't me (look for my Yzerman photo). Don't worry, I'll never troll, but an occasional jobbing or two is not out of the question.

Now, for my real reason for posting. You guys got any thoughts on Scotty going to Chicago? I've always hated the Hawks, as all good Wing fans should. But there's no way I could ever hate Scotty. Did you/do you guys still like/love/admire Scotty after he left the Pens? I think the man is magic.

Flyer Hater said...

I think the only fans that stuff the ballot box more heavily than us are Habs fans.

Dan said...

no problem redwings, like i said, we enjoy you here. the no-picture was a giveaway for me too.

admittedly i am too young to really remember bowman's reign, but he did win a cup, and you can't argue results. i remember watching something about how all the players absolutely hated him, and this was a group of mostly veterans, so he may not be the best person to bring around the youth a team like chicago has.

J.S. said...

also mentioned in a seperate Puck Daddy articleJ.O.E. Daking, aka Johnny Roy gets hit with an assault charge from his March incident where he roughed up a goalie.

No word on whether the jury plans on giving him the finger.

RedWings said...

@ dan:

That's a good point on how Scotty's 'tude will rub the younguns' in Chicago. But I wonder, since his title is something like "Assistant to Hockey Operations" or something, if he'll mainly be a management guy with no team contact. Other than with the coaching staff.

I'll tell ya, one of my very big fears is, that when Toronto tried getting him, he said he wouldn't go unless he could bring Hakkan Andersen (I think) the Wings highly regarding Euro scout with him. Well, if he cut the same kind of deal with Shitcago I would be very bummed/worried/concerned about the continuing winning ways of the Wings.

Another sidebar I heard, is that Scotty's son that works for the Hawks has some kind of cancer, and Scotty is a big family guy. So this move makes sense on a couple of levels.

I just hate to see him leave, for the freakin' Hawks.

Dan said...

@ wings - you could say that's how we felt about you guys getting hossa. now we say he can burn in hell though.

Dr. Turkleton said...

he might be too busy petitioning to re-post, though.

Rock The Vote.

underrated = the pattern IN the Red Line.

Pens = diamonds
Wild = dashes

I think the Pens used to have mini logo outlines instead of those diamonds at one point...it seems like most teams either use simple dashes or have just a solid red line...looks like the Thrashers have a different pattern. [looking at the contest pic]

I hear ya there. It always runs a lot deeper, I think, when it's a player. Like when Fedorov dumped Detroit I hated him with a passion. In fact, still do.

But Scotty, man. I just remember the DeadThings era form the 70s and 80s and Scotty was the man that delivered the Cup after 42 friggin' years of futility. And then repeated, got a third and consulted on a fourth. That man has a lifetime pass from me.

But the fricken' hawks??? Dang it all Scotty, you make it difficult.

Dr. Turkleton said...

RW...

when Bowman and Bob Johnson both got hired in 1990...then Craig Patrick gets 'Slippery Rock' Joe Mullen for a 2nd round pick that draft year...it was if the Pens Organization had hit the lottery!

Bowman was initially hired for Director of Player Development, then stepped in as coach with the untimely death of Badger Bob.

Like Dan said, the players grew to resent Scotty as a coach, especially those in Mario's Country Club circle...to the point that the players revolted and wouldn't practice with Scotty on the ice. He had to resort to watching from the stands.

Having him 'off the ice' might be a good thing for the Hawks organization and the players.

Speaking of being a family man. He 'lived' in the Ramada [now, the Doubletree] a couple hundred yards from the Igloo and was always out of town commuting back and forth to his home in Buffalo, even when he was 'coach'.

Dan said...

doc, as always, thanks for the clarification. we would be lost without your knowledge.

the pirates actually had a very nice deal for bay in that 3 way deal, but the marlins screwed us. i have an inside source. i would name us the losers too, that deal was pretty weak.

Pops Freshenmeyer said...

I'm surprised the Bucs couldn't screw over the Dodgers in a deal for Jack Wilson. The Dodgers were in desperate need of a shortstop; any reasonably competent GM should've been able to sucker them into overpaying.

Ah well, the real deadline isn't until August 31 anyway. There's still hope.

Dan said...

the odds of getting any sort of deal done now though are slim. what a bunch of jokes. and the futility shall continue!!!!!!!!

i have a t shirt that says "i'm accustomed to misery, i'm a pirates fan"

brndlynn said...

could it be an actual hockey discussion? lol.

i think that the players dislike for Bowman was also in part to the fact that he stepped in after Badger Bob passed away. it would be hard for any coach to step in after the the previous coach had died unexpectedly but Bob was so well liked by the team and had a very specific way of directing the them. He was very personable and loved whereas Bowman was harsh and abrasive (from what I remember). He had huge shoes to fill and I think the players would have been unreceptive to anyone who wasnt Bob and/or did not approach the game in the same way.

somechic said...

Boy, that is anyone's guess. Great question. That's been the raging debate around these parts. Depending on what your read, the Wings are something like 977K UNDER cap right now, but they've got to sign McCarty or Aaron Downey or both (probably to two-way contracts) and Chelios (he'll come cheap but he still made around 850K last year, I think.

The Wings are blessed with a pretty deep blue line right now including some promising kids in Grand Rapids. Back when Scotty ws around (wink) he loved the veterans and he'd peddle a prospect in a heartbeat. I think that has changed over the years, and the Wings are really committed to their homegrowns.

About all we know for sure is that signing Hossa next year appears to be impossible at this point. Regardless, some of the names the bloggers through around are Lilja and Lebda from the blueline and Samuelsson and Hudler from the forwards. There's a vet and a kid in each of those pairings. Lebda doesn't offer that much cap savings and Lilja just accepted the hometeam discount to stay in Detroit for two more years, so that doesn't seem quite right either.

There' another D youngster, Kyle Quincey who's got good size and the Wings would like to keep him too, but....

I don't know.

He still lives in Buffalo to this day. Last year, when we were in Wesstern NY visiting the in-laws, we stopped in a local hot dog place. The clerk behind the counter noticed my Red Wing shirt and said, "You should have been here a half hour ago. Scotty Bowman was in here". I almost crapped myself. But it's not hard to imagine him moving the 'misses' to Chicago, especially if they've got a son ailing.

Huntington = very well might have aced Trade Deadline Day Management 101 from Dr. Shero. He played two teams competing for a division title off of each other (Tampa and Boston) to make sure he could get players close to his asking price for Bay. He wouldn't cave when the return in the Florida-Boston-Pittsburgh deal might have fallen below what he wanted. He still managed to keep Boston interested long enough to bring them back into the fold when the Tampa dealings collapsed just before the deadline. He did a masterful job today.

I liked today's deal but wasn't crazy about it at first. The more I looked into it, the more I love it.

That deal he swung today was very solid. Combine that with the deal he made for Nady and the overall organization is in much, MUCH better long-term shape than it was 10 days ago. When all was said and done, the Pirates traded three players who weren't going to be a part of the franchise after next season for eight players - three of whom were listed by Baseball America among their respective clubs' top 10 prospects and pretty much all of whom were better than most of the players that currently existed in their farm system.

Amazing what happens when you have a GM who knows what the fuck he seems to be doing.

They need to turn their attention to their draft picks now and get some of those top talents signed.

@ Pops Freshenmeyer -

I think the pitchers the Pirates got from the Yankees are going to wind up being better than most people think. Ohlendorf was untouchable as of last year and had a hard time getting back into the lineup here because other guys were pitching over their respective heads a little bit. Both he and Tabata were untouchable as of last year. Thankfully, the Yankees seldom look beyond more than a year or two when it comes to prospects.

Karstens will like end up as a decent back-of-the-rotation or middle relief guy and Dan McCutchen could wind up being the key to the whole thing as far as those pitchers go in that deal.

Outside of Brad Lincoln, all three of them are much better than anything else the Pirates have in the system. In fact, that Morris kid they got from the Dodgers is probably not far behind Lincoln as the top pitcher in the minor league system right now.

I agree with what Prince Huntingdon did today [there's only room for one King in this town!]

like he said in his post trade presser...8 able bodies that are in the organization for 6+ years to come...minimum. With tons of upside. Whereas, Nady + Bay only around for 1 more season [would they sign here for major discounts? doubtful] and I don't think the Bucs would've touched Marte's mega-million dollar option.

If only 2 or 3 of the eight pan out...I'd still call it a success.

Putting a call out to all Erie-based C-bloggers...

If you get a chance, please do yourselves a favor and check this out.

It's a benefit being held on Tuesday, August 19 for former Erie Otters forward Jason Baird. Baird, who had been playing minor pro hockey with the Youngstown Steelhounds of the CHL, was badly injured and burned in a landscaping accident near his home in Ohio.

I got a chance to meet Jason when he was with the Otters and the kid is a 100% class act. He was to those Otters teams what Ryan Malone was to the Pens this past season.

Several of the Otters NHL alums are going to be there. Tim Connolly (another class act), Steve Valiquette and Mike Rupp are already confirmed, and word is that Brad Boyes and Chris Campoli are going to be there as well. Proceeds from the event are going to help relieve Baird's family of his medical costs.

I will be unable to go because I'm not going to be able to get that day off. But if you live in the Erie area and get a chance to stop by the benefit, please do so. Baird was a classy kid who gave tons of his time to the community when he was in juniors.

@ Stoosh

There's another benefit for Baird some former Pens are going to be playing at in Youngstown on Aug 24th; Phil Bourque, Ken Wregget, Troy Loney and Mark Kachowski.

blah i forget, whoever said it though, the pirates didn't budge in the first 3 way, it was the marlins who screwed the pooch. they wanted too much. i like the deal we got, but it was a lot better, we would've gotten hermida, lowrie, a pitcher from florida whom i can't remember, and possibly mike stanton. that would've been da shiznit.

i'm going to bed, i leave for the beach tomorrow evening. i plan on being drunk by 10 am saturday.

Agree with the Prince Huntington name, as Stoosh pointed out he did well and is on his way to getting this team back to respectability. (In hindsight how huge would that Cliff Lee and others for Jason Bay deal have been that was rumored the previous offseason?). On the draft picks topic, it did seem kind of troubling when he was talking about our "dearth" of third basemen (LaRoche, Walker, Batista) without mentioning Pedro Alvarez. Signing him and Scheppers will really show how committed they are to turning this team around.

And to those of you making light of the team's past failures and current state, i was a little miffed. But then I got to thinking, you were either too young or weren't in the area back when the Pirates were good. The structure of MLB has left me jaded at times, but there really are few things better than watching a great baseball team play in your city. The first playoff game at PNC Park will be unreal. Hope you'll all be there.

If we're all still alive haha

im going to have to root for the dbacks next week when the pirates are in town. i normally wouldnt do this, but the dbacks have a chance. and LA just picked up Manny, so they need some support. maybe ill invest in a 'split' jersey...

jefe, the penalty for said transgressions is one month without any new NHL hockey. I hope you're satisfied.

Turk, the memory of me relentlessly punching the coffee table that night (after Chico Lind's blunder, and Belinda's subsequent meltdown) will always be burned in my memory. What a strange time, when the Steelers were the worst team in Pittsburgh.

I'd love to see Alvarez playing here at first base. Just sign the kid!

Six teams interested in Sundin's services, although they'll only name three....which tells me there's only three.

@FH

Good call on the tribunal. I'm pretty sure part of the review is to strap the blogger down and waterboard him for information. I also have it on good authority that Charlie volunteered to be "boarded". I don't think it's what he expects.

Robert Ullman said...

Acid Queen? Seems like a bit of a tightass, but do you think she'd bother?

Also, is tPB at war with Mondesi's? Dude's apparently too good to respond to my emails, but otherwise seems alright.

My money's on Marian Two-Face.

Stilly said...

Whoever reported them probably did it anonymously. Basically because people who are pussy enough to report "violations" are too pussy to put their name on it.

thePensBlog has a right to confront their accuser. That prick should step up and explain him/her-self.

J.S. said...

Is that really what the title "half past dead" meant, or was that pure coincidence?

Why would anybody report a blog? If something on teh interwebs bothers you that much, here's a thought: hit the X in the upper right corner.

If blogger or TPB ever releases the person who reported, there will be a jobbing of epic proportions on the way. It'll be hundreds of times worse than this jobbing performed by Jay and Silent Bob a few years ago.

I bet Pensblog stole Acid Queens marble rye and now she's pissed...and hungry!

I'll tell you who it was. It was that goddamn sasquatch.

Docciavelli said...

My guess is that there's an automatic trigger when a blog on blogger takes up a certain amount of space because of the number of posts and/or disk space needed to store it.

My alternate theory is Joe Dumbass at OffWing went after pensblog for posting pictures of his mancrush Ovie that he and McErlain may have copyrighted after snapping in the back room of a Dupont Circle nightclub for OffWingPhoto. Does Charlie know anything about this?

RedWings said...

did someone think of backing up the site just in case a move in necessary?

dying alive said...

Huh. I didn't realize that being much, much better than every other blog on the Gore was a violation of service.

I assume this is some kind of automated thing. I have to assume that because I refuse to believe that someone is so pathetic and in such desperate need of a life and/or friends that they'd actually take the time out of their sad lives to report a BLOG for being offensive. Nobody is that much of a loser.

Stilly said...

I'm sure tPB Staff will let us know when they know something new and exciting.
