12:00 pm
In the post previous to this one, we tested out a live-chat thing.
We were thinking about using it today during the free-agency stuff.
But it's just too hectic.
We'll be "live-blogging," whatever that is, shortly after 12:00pm today.
What it means is we'll be reloading TSN.ca and watching NHL Network until we stop doing it.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
This recent season gave all of us a good idea of what it takes to win the Cup.
No one's denying the Penguins are missing some crucial elements right now.
Starting today Shero begins piecing things together.
The quest to be the 2008 Stanley Cup Champion starts now.
RECAP
6 forwards are signed for 2008:
Crosby, Malkin, Sykora, Staal, Talbot, Kennedy
6 defensemen:
Gonchar, Whitney, Sydor, Gill, Letang, Scuderi
and one Dany Sabourin.
That leaves six empty forward spots to be filled, Fleury to be re-signed,
and $26 million to get the job done.
If you've got a lucky shirt, wear it.
If believe in a god, say a silent prayer.
If you prescribe to the concept of karma, don't cheat on your significant other.
Many are saying this free agency pool is short on talent,
but that's always the case. There's never enough to go around.

Citizens Against Ron Cook
Check out his latest mistake.
Ron Cook puts words in Penguins fans' mouths just so he can write a column. [ PG ]
It's not yet July, but there's already a strong contender for the dumbest, most irrational Pittsburgh sports sentiment of the year. If the Penguins had a dollar for every time one of their fans said it, they could pay Marc-Andre Fleury and Evgeni Malkin in cash.
"What's wrong with Hossa, Malone and Orpik? Are they that greedy or what? Don't they realize what they'll give up if they leave here? Don't they know how good they have it playing with Sid? If they were smart, they would sign with the Penguins for less money because they can win the Cup here."
Please. What a crock.
Ron Cook is catching on to the fact that, with the internet, he can tap into the thoughts running rampant amidst a team's fanbase.
He is starting to embrace it.
But he is only tapping into the commentary that he disagrees with.
Then he showers us with reasoning why those ideas don't make sense.
We'll be the first to say that the viewpoint he references is very stupid and ignorant.
But come on man.
If you have tire marks on your shirt from Cook throwing you under the bus,
send your dry-cleaning bill to the Post-Gazette.

7 years, $31.5 million. That's $4.5 million a season.
The Lightning have been big players early this off-season.
No doubt a Ryan Malone-Vincent Lecavalier-Martin St. Louis line would be dangerous.
But a second line of Jussi Jokinen-Vinny Prospal-Michel Ouellet doesn't exactly invoke fear.
Neither does the netminding duo of Karri Ramo and Mike Smith.
They aren't spent quite yet, but they're close. With maybe one more trick up their sleeve.
Moving Dan Boyle might be crazy, but that hasn't been a deterrent for the Lightning.
And it would clear up a lot of cash.
They went and got some defenseman on Monday, too. Unreal.
They're trading away all their draft picks.

Kevin Lowe is up to his old tricks.
But actually, he pulled the trigger on a solid trade.
Sheldon Souray was poop in regards to replacing Chris Pronger.

OK. Now, I can go to sleep.
Hopefully, Chase can fall asleep after tonight.
last post joose said: "It's time to hit the sack."
bullshitter! :)
chase, sorry you are still a numbskull for that one.
I had to do one last refresh before I called it a night. It's a routine.
Goodnight, Jefe.
heh, chump change. i laughed at that, then threw up at the gary jersey.
next time you use what a croc, you should use peter forsberg with his pair of crocs. but seriously, should ronnie be pointing the mirror at himself and others in the media when the playoffs ended? i can safely say not only have some fans said that, but so have some writer heads.
Wow. Chase is a reader! What a coincidence! After we all said he was stunned, I think we have ended up being the ones stunned.
I have work at 7AM. I have to be up in 3 hours. Timeforbedblog.
In sHERO we trust. I have work 'til 1PM tomorrow. I wish I could somehow get updates. Ha ha. Hmm.
Oh, I forgot.
Let's Go Pens.
Do it.
One last thing. If possible, someone should send me text message updates on my phone. My number is on my Facebook. Do it. Someone. Please. Ha ha.
lol shoez, you'll get 80 updates on one trade
I had no idea who everyone was always talking about when they mentioned this Shero guy until I saw a picture of him tonight online and put the pieces together.
We've always just known him as "Ray-Ray" here in the 'hood.
DO IT RAY-RAY!
That's fine. Better than none at all.
Bedtime!
I guess his being a reader makes us raise a question mark to the average smarts of a pensblog reader. I'll be the first to say he's smarter than me.
Ok, now I think I'm really going to bed... maybe.
fuckin rights
get'r done ray
I fell asleep for a few hours, but I had to get up and peek at the presents...look at 'em all shiny and nice under the Igloo!
When can we open them, mommy?
Not till noon dear...now get to bed!
With visions of Free Candy, dancing in my head...
Brooks Orpik does not dance!... He destroys!
So...8 years ago tonight, my best friend died.
I needed this blog. I needed making fun of Chase Sampson. I needed funny free-agent talk to get me through.
I need and I love this blog@

Hossa

Ruutu

DO THEM. Er, wait...
Begin your prayers to King Shero.

Wow, that is shocking that Chase is a reader. So with all respect, what an awesome job getting onto "Millionaire." But that question was a gimme, bud!!!!
In Shero We Trust
wonder if you guys had the same stunned look he had after realizing he f'ed up!!!
To honor Chase, that should be the stunned pic for the offseason.
-FritoWill
Keep your fingers crossed that Tampa doesn't ink Rolston........
c'mon noon....Pens, give out that $$$$$$
c'mon big daddy ray-ray
too many names to list for ray to go after just offer everything plus the house.... got up at 6:30 am to check the overnight rumors and nothing yet, other than Toronto is going to make a pitch for Husilieus....Tampa will offer a contract to Rolston today but lets hope he waits to see what he gets on the open
ooooh! Shit! Sorry Chase!!! Jobbing was in the air yesterday.
H.C. Prick officially raises the bounty to to 20$ per leg! That means that if you break both of Ron Cook's legs that you can buy Blade Runner on Blue Ray with your Best Buy gift certificate award!
Forget god... it's time we put our faith in SATAN!!!!
RE lucky shirt
ill one up on that one, ill put on "the tie", you know that one tie you usually reserve for a big meeting or a presentation, that one tie that makes you feel like a closer.. i hope sHERO has a tie like mine
If we can get one of Naslund, Rolston or Huselius I will cut Ray Shero's lawn.
If we also sign Hossa, I will go gay for him.
i have a meeting at 11am... hoping it lasts till 11:30... who schedules a meeting at that time on the morning of NHL free agency?? oh wait i do
p.o.= fail
Oh I left my schedule clear for today. I have a block of time for "development" and "testing" It lasts the whole afternoon.
Do It Shero. Ease my worried mind.
Figures that the only hours I HAVE to be at work today (away from a computer) are from 11:30-4pm. SHIT.
sHERO. DO IT.
Floppa and his crocs
no wonder he has ankle problems
Ease my worried mind.
Rayla
Got me on my knees, Rayla
Beg you darlin' please, sign Hossa
Darlin' won't you ease my worried mind
(You have to run "sign Hossa" togther so fast that you cram it into one syllable to get it to work, but whatev)
And let pre-emptively strike at talk about signing certain players by repeating what I said in the livechatblog experiment last night:
I would rather volunteer my balls for use as a pogo stick testing pad than see this team sign Avery or Bertuzzi.
well i hope everyone is lubed up for hossa to screw us today. is it noon yet?
@raybin
HA Rayla.. love it. I changed Layla to Shero a couple days ago, but this is much funnier..
Clapton is God
Do It.
a couple things we havent talked about (or that i havent seen atleast)
what are the chances the pens take a flier on an offer sheet to a corey perry or a jay bouwmeiester assuming ho$$a and free candy jump ship? two outstanding young players who would come on the cheap compared to ho$$a and orpik
how about a guy like jason williams from chicago? he had a few good years when he was real young back with detroit i believe and could be a guy who could have a resurgence similar to sykora if placed on the right line
crossing my fingers we keep ruu and dupuis though, two under-rated players/penalty killers/character guys i think we would miss
rolston news
spot the typo. you will receive a gold star.
raybin said...

I will do the same. Hell, I am one hell of a weedwhacker as well.
dan.. it says hes 25.. i am 25... rolston is 35
@dan
Rolston took ten years off his age? #1 priority now!
I'm stuck in an all day meeting today. me = chase stunned.
It will be a whole new world when I get on Gore after four.
And today we find out just how free the candy really is.
we're slowly approaching the three hour mark...
ill probably have an ulcer by noon and wear out the refresh button on my browser
p.o. with the win, raybin with the heartbreak
BREAKING NEWS: The Washington Capitals have agreed to terms with restricted free agent defenceman Mike Greeen. Sources tell TSN it's a four year deal with an average annual salary of $5.25 million.
@dan
Vaderblog: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
@p.o.
Smart move by the Caps. Green is a beast.
$5.25 mil though? id say that drives Redden's price up (he leads the NHL in +/- since the strike) and makes Orpik a legit $4-5 mil guy (atleast in the eyes of his agent)
Whew, inbetween programming at work I am just trying to refresh all my nhl pages in the backgrounds for updates... nothing probably will happen till noon but it seems like it is taking forever.
he leads the NHL in +/- since the strike
Indicating mostly that he has played on a good team over that time span.
jyo
call it a good team, call it luck, its still pretty impressive and i wouldnt mind seeing a guy like redden in a pens sweater
mmm sHero bring Jagr back home
Where's that Red Wings jobber to tell us the importance of +/- when you need him?
I'm happy about the Green signing because it could put a bit of a ceiling on Orpik's potential deal. Offensive d-men typically pull down a bit more than stay-at-home guys, and Brooks is pretty much a stay-at-home guy (look at his career goals-per-game for proof).
So dear King Shero, offer Free Candy five years, $18M to keep his yard sales in Pittsburgh. Front-load it a bit if you have to. That's a $3.6M cap hit per season.
ROFL. +/- stats. Kinda makes me nostalgic for PaulinMiamiMen. At least we're talking about defensemen here.
+/- = the awesomeness according to the red wings
well i hope everyone is lubed up for hossa to screw us today.
I hear thats the top phrase uttered by all the folks lined up on the bridge this morning.
I can't believe that Mats Sundin hasn't retired yet.
His eyebrows retired from life at least 23 years ago.
Naslund-Crosby-Jagr
Rolston-Malkin-Sykora
DO IT
For my lucky routine, I'm praying to the Charmed Ones.
Where's that Red Wings jobber to tell us the importance of +/- when you need him?
Probably touching himself while looking at pics of Chris Osgood.
BNG66, no way Sundin's eyebrows retire before Bobby Holik's.
Holik's eyebrow(s?) easily outlive Holik by about 20 years minimum.
via sportsnet.ca:
While the Rangers will check in on Marian Hossa, The Post has been told that the Bruins are preparing to present the 29-year-old winger with an offer in the neighborhood of $100M over 12 years. Hossa has previously rejected a six-year offer of $7.5M per from the Penguins.
The Bruins would be able to accommodate the contract by waiving Glen Murray and Manny Fernandez. While the 2008-09 cap is $56.7M, the summer cap is $63.37M. The Rangers, who will also check in on Brian Rolston, have approximately $24M to spend under next season's cap, and $5.67M more if necessary prior to training camp cutbacks.
wow, 100 mil.. but for 12 years when Hossa is 29 already, they want him when he is 41 at 8.3 mil a year?
well the good news with that hossa deal is that's not a lot to pass up compared to what we offered to win. oh yeah, he's european and for the most part they only care about money.
Probably touching himself while looking at pics of Chris Osgood.
Or doing so while watching Jetsons re-runs
100 mil over 12 years for Hossa?
If that's true, its bye bye Rex.
ah shit forgot to mention mirtle thinks dupuis will get 2-2.5 a year.
if dupuis can get $2.5 mil per year see ya later.. dupuis = stone or filewich
If that Hossa Bruins deal would go down that way, it might be the worst deal ever. I wonder how that $8.3 million cap hit will feel when he is in his upper 30s and early 40s?
100 million, 12 year contract for Hossa? If that's even remotely close to being on the table, they're out of their friggin minds. Any contract that long is insanity, on both sides of the coin.
i hope they do it and handcuff themselves for the next ten years... the city of boston deserves it
I've been lurking here since the playoffs, but I finally feel the need to make a comment here.
All of my life I've looked forward to July 1 every year because, well, it's my birthday. Since March, I've looked forward to July 1 even more because I scored tickets to days 3 and 4 of the Olympic Swim Trials here in my home town (and swimming's my favorite summer Olympic sport!). Since the end of the SCF, though, I've been looking to July 1 even more because of the craziness that is free agency, and that is because of this website. Great posts, great discussion on c-blog, everything. Now it's just killing me because I'm heading down to the trials venue in an hour and will be away from the computer all day (morning session starts at 11 AM CST, evening session starts at 6:45PM CST), and I'm not going to know what the hell happened until after that. Seeing Michael Phelps swim is going to help, but I'm still going to be a bit on edge until I get home and race to the compy to see what happened.
I'm not sure if this post really had a point (hooray lackofsleepblog), but I guess I just wanted to finally post and unload a bit of the feelings most of the folks around here seem to be sharing as far as freeagencyblog goes.
In Shero we trust.
(end firstpostblog)
Well, if you're looking for level-headed analysis of the free agency situation, do yourself a favor and stay away from mainstream radio today.
DVE has Paul Alexander and his bad fake suntan doing sports because Prisuta's on vacation and "gearing up for his greuling Steelers camp coverage" (dude, it's still four weeks away and besides, all you do is write the articles...give me a break).
Anyway, here's the depth of their analysis...
1. The Pens have ten players from last year's team who could be signed away today, and
2. Chances are if most of them leave, we're going to be a worse team next year.
*takes a drink of this nice, cold Sarcasma*
Yes, because if all these guys leave, it automatically means they can't or won't be replaced. We're just gonna play next season with two forward lines and three defensive pairings. Ironman hockey, eh?
Hey jackasses...
Last time I checked, Shero still needs to fill roster spots, and he needs to fill them with living, breathing, professional hockey players.
And last time I checked, the team still had roughly $25 million under the cap to spend.
And the last time I checked, there are still a ton of good free agents out there who could be brought in.
And here's a thought...THE LAST TIME I CHECKED, there's a CHANCE that we actually could emerge as a better team.
What a concept!
Look, I know the gloom, the doom and the "sky-is-falling-so-let's-take-to-the-nearest-bridge" crap is all the rage these days...all the kids are doing it. So I guess I'm just not hip like that.
Put your trust in the Shero, son.
Salvation lies within.
Yeesh, looks like I'm a little late to the party.
Let's do this.
Welcome Kierstan!
hooray lackofsleepblog
Do you have coffee running through your veins?
/had to be said
been up since 6:30, indeed hooray lackofsleepblog... coffee + tpb makes it possible for me to get through the day
This article indicates the Bruins aren't likely to go after Hossa.
General manager Peter Chiarelli, reached by phone late yesterday afternoon, sounded as if he is prepared to ignore the early wave of emotional bidding, then look to move in for a value purchase (the $2 million to $4 million-a-year range) once the market begins to cool.
@ P.O. -

If you could combine Vincent Price's iconic laugh at the end of Thriller and that sort of shouting/screaming/exaggerated laugh that Christopher Walken does (the one that makes you think he's really kind of crazy)...that's pretty much the laugh I just burst into upon reading that rumor.
If Boston is crazy enough to throw 12 years at a complimentary - albeit it very good, but still complimentary winger, God bless them.
We'll be more than happy to bring in some lesser but talented names, rebalance our top two or three lines and continue to finish among the top three teams in the conference while Boston struggles to get into the playoffs every year.
And considering that the salary floor is up to $40.7 million, Shero has to find a way to add $6 million to next year's payroll at minimum.
Who needs 23 players on the roster? Not the Pens.
[/sarcasm]
Go get 'em, Ray. Show them why you were one of the hottest GM prospects when the Pens gave you the job.
I couldn't agree more with this bit from the Pioneer Press (Minnesota):
“It’s not that I don’t want to spend up to the cap. The question is, is it worth it in this climate?” Risebrough said Monday. “In this climate, (top) guys are going to get their money. The cap is going up, but I don’t see the quality of free agents.”
It sounds like a lot of GMs don't want to tie up big money in guys they don't think deserve it, even it means settling for more middle of the pack type players. Not everyone is going to spend like Tampa. I guess it only takes one team for each guy to strike it rich though.
stoosh
couldnt agree more.. just threw that one out there for discussion cause i saw it pop up... i say let people overpay for the hossas and the campbells and the reddens and we'll take guys like jason williams on the cheap
like i said earlier.. wouldnt mind giving up some draft picks to throw out an offer sheet at a guy like corey perry or jay bouwmeiester
The Thrashers showed considerable restraint in just buying Zhitnik out. I must imagine that there was tremendous temptation to beat him to death as a scapegoat for management's horrible decisions en route to a playoff flameout last season.
If there were more than 12 hockey fans in Atlanta, Don Waddell would've been fired or killed years ago.
@ P.O. -
By the way, chances are we're going to see some of Stone and/or Filewich next year. Both of them will have to clear waivers next year to get down to Wilkes-Barre, and I'm not sure either will.
Stone is a work in progress, but I think he's the player closest to replacing the same sort of game we saw out of Malone this year (physical, decent skill set, willingness to fight). A player like that would definitely be scooped up on waivers.
Filewich took a step back in terms of his production in Wilkes-Barre, but he didn't really look out of place at all when he played here, so I'm not sure. Then again, we once said that about Noah Welch.
Rolston to test the market.
Rolston to test the market.
So you're saying we have a chance...
@jyo
That does seem to be the word on the street. And the article said he lost 10 years, amazing!
Stoosh
i just cant see there being too much of a drop off in overall play between stone/filewich and dupuis/hall (with the exception being hall's face off skills)
The day is at hand
Free angency is awful
I need some more beer
@ P.O. -
TSN is reporting that Perry is close to signing a deal, but if that's not done by noon, Anaheim's fax machine is gonna be Offer Sheet City.
Bouwmeester would really intrigue me, but I'd be worried that RFA compensation for him would be in that max range and I'm not sure how much a draft-pick hit he'd be worth. For what it's worth though, the rumors were flying before Florida traded Jokinen that Bouwmeester was disenchanted with the franchise's total lack of direction and that he might want out. If that's true, he couldn't have been happy with the decision to deal Jokinen.
If we pick up JJ I'll beat him to death with his own shoes and then jump in the Mon!
So, what does everyone want to discuss on this summer afternoon? Smoking bans, movies, helmet laws??? Any other ideas? Just another long afternoon at work I guess... Maybe we can decide after lunch.
stoosh
i see your point... we are already thin on draft choices as is from past deals... giving up a few more first round picks could potentially set us back as far as player development goes, however, guys like bouwmeister and perry could be worth the risk as young and talented as they are
maybe even an RFA like Bernier from buffalo (formerly SJ, came over in the campbell trade).. hes a big body who could play the Bugsy role on Geno's line.. not sure what the comp level for him would be or buffalos interest in keeping him
@ P.O. -
I'm a big fan of Stone and I'd love to see him make the team. I think he'd do a great job as a lower-line player on this team, AND he's more than willing to go after some of those agitator-types like Downie and Avery (which might make Laraque expendable).
question about TSN:
didn't they have a live ticker showing who signed where last year?
jyo: I think we should go a take a different track today. How long do you think it's been since anyone seriously debated the two-house parliamentary system?
@ P.O.
Check this out from Scott Cullen at TSN. He wrote this up last week and it's a pretty good breakdown of the RFA situation.
Specifically mentions Bernier as a low-cost RFA pickup (he'd cost a third-round pick based on his salary).
We should have an official prediction of picks up for today and the winner gets a virtual high five from all of us.
Max, I'm sure Mike Milbury's services will be available for shoe-beatings-upon-request. Rumor has it that he has the experience.
Conveniently set up my system testing time to run from 1045 to about 230. Not that I'm never far from my computer, but it's more or less a guarantee that my ass will be in chair with Fan590 on and hopefully a live ticker running.
stoosh
id be a happy boy if we picked up a guy like bernier... 6'2'' 235... winner winner chicken dinner
@Stoosh
How about that? Seems to me we just picked up an extra third round pick. Shero's master plan begins to unfurl.
If Dupuis gets 2.5 per, I'm rooting for the Rangers next year.
i really think, however it happens, chicago comes out the winner. they are trying to change for the better.
I don't think the fans in Tampa quite realize what they're getting with GR. I pray they understand it soon and continue the cause of "Gary Roberts for President".
How long do you think it's been since anyone seriously debated the two-house parliamentary system?
Too long, my friend, much too long.
@Staff: Well, look's like our karma is down after that video ...
And also, that Malone jersey is depressing ... I thought I was coping and then I saw that ... then again I don't like walking into my room when it's daylight because I have 20+ pictures of him everywhere ...
@Kierstan: Gotta love Phelps ... welcome!
I'm ready for freeagencyblog ... my ultimate loss already happened ...
In Shero I Trust!
Stoosh, here's my plan of action for Free Agency Blog:
*Constant updates from the likes of Ron Cook and Bob Smizik telling me that the Pens will be the Pirates in 5 years and that we won't be able to sign anyone. Because of that Crosby, will get mad and demand a trade and Chris Minard will be our first line center next year.
*Constant updates from LGP telling me that the rumors are true and that they sky is falling because the Pens won't sign 25 free agents by 12:05. "OMGZZZ, SUNDINZ WINS FACEOFFS, LOLZZZ, PENS SHOULD HAVE GONE AFTER HIM"
*Constant updates from flyersphans.com telling me that the Pens tanked for 5 years
*Constant updates from the Fan590 that the Leafs are rumored to sign every Free Agent because every player in the NHL wants to fulfill their lifetime long dream of playing with the Leafs, even at the minimum wage.
P.S.
*A 12 pack of Valium
every player in the NHL wants to fulfill their lifetime long dream of playing with the Leafs, even at the minimum wage.
Shit, I thought they all wanted to play with Crozbee for the minimum!!! Where's the bridge?
I can't wrap my fragile little brain around the fact that the Roberts and Bugsy are going to be wearing Tampon Bay jerseys. Booooooooo.
demondg1, I'm torn on that. Yeah, it'd be cool that another city picked up on it and I'd be curious how far it would carry. However, stuff like that and the other Gary-related comments started here. One of the reason it was able to spread because of the Penguins fanbase, which as we all know covers anywhere and everywhere in the US and Canada, or sometimes even further than that. As far as I know, the same thing can't be said about the Lightning.
But I'm gonna be nice and say I know there has to be some creative people down in South FLA and they will come up with something to show their appreciation for Saint Gary.
The Fan590 is reporting that the Bruins are willing to offer Hossa a 12 year 120 million dollar contract. However, for the transaction to be approved by the league, Boston's owner and GM will be required to take an IQ test where they must score in the double digits.
JYO, that's just Plan B...
people were creative in south florida, when they were in their 20's, 60 years ago. if it ain't shuffleboard, they ain't down
Gary Roberts did not sign a contract with Tampa Bay, they just gave him $2 million dollars not to slaughter everybody in the city.
BREAKING NEWS: New Jersey Devils and defenceman Bryce Salvador agree to terms on a four-year deal worth an average of $2.9 million per year.
Per TSN.
you can have bryce salvador for 2.9. I'll take orpik at 3.5 please.
that stiff at $2.9mil per year.. the cost of candy keeps rising.....
people were creative in south florida, when they were in their 20's
I didn't know anyone lived there in their 20s. I thought everyone just moved there from the northeast after they hit 65.
The Fan590 is reporting that the Bruins are willing to offer Hossa a 12 year 120 million dollar contract.
All right, who kidnapped Jeremy Jacobs and replaced him again with the alien who gave Mary Lapointe that hideous contract?
surely the Bruins are that incompetent.
nevermind they traded a franchise player in Thornton for an entire third line.
tsn's website says nothing about salvador
Breaking News:
Bruins agree, Preperation H does feel good, on the whole.

only 1.5 hours remaining, hold on to your hats kids, it is gonna be a bumpy ride
in sHero we trust
10:21AM New Jersey re-signs defenceman Bryce Salvador to a four-year deal worth $11.6 million (average of $2.9 million per season).
ugh tsn's website is painfully slow. there's gotta be another way..........
@dan, it's there i see it.
@cmu
To quote Samuel L Jackson: Hold on to your butts. Shit's about to go down.
@Dan:
TSN on Salvador
Aron, there's a reason the Bruins haven't won a Cup since 1972. It's basically the same reason the Leafs haven't won since 1967 or the Blackhawks since 1961. Futility, thy names are Jeremy Jacobs and Harry Sinden. Or Harold Ballard, et al. Or Bill Wirtz and Bob Pulford.
The Bruins do get more entertaining (pathetic?) when Bizarro Jeremy Jacobs shows up and throws huge amounts of money at the wrong players. Like Marty Lapointe. Otherwise they just get mediocre then trade away all their good players before they have to pay them what they're worth.
@stilly
btw I saw "Wanted" last night and Morgan Freeman attempted a Samuel L. type line near the end of the movie... whole theater burst out laughing hearing those dirty words come from his mouth
Well, today's going to be good day because whatever happens I still have Sid the Man and only have to wait so long before the Sidstache comes back into action ... plus, Geno the Malking is still with us! WOOO!! Eat it!
I have a lot requests to start jobbing ... ha, I would accept all right now, but I must depart ... I'm off to the dentist ... to the Ford Expedition, Family ...
Sorry, I've been watching a lot of Batman stuff leading up to The Dark Knight ...
i lived in Chicago, i know all about "dollar" bill wirtz. However since his passing, it looks like Chicago may finally be "getting it" and should be good for years to come with Toews and Kane anchoring a talented young team. They're going to be active next year with Khabibulin and Havlat coming off their books.
ya it finally came up, their website is slower than a turtle right now. sigh.
let's play what if....
Hossa doesn't sign.
What is the most you would pay Rolston?
I feel like I should take my lunch break earlier so I can be back by the computer by noon
I am having zero problems with TSNs speed right now Dan. Are other sites working for you?
@dan
tsn is going normal speed for me
everything is fine but tsn. stupid canada. blame canada!
I couldn't be happier for Blackhawks fans right now. They watched Bill Wirtz rape hockey there for 45 years, and now there's finally an owner willing to spend the money to turn the team around in place. The future is bright for a franchise that's been stuck in the dark for decades.
recomendation...Fanhouse has a live chat with the good dr. starting in 13 minutes.
"It's pronounced canada. And no, I haven't."
i'm asking the good doctor how green and salvador's contracts will effect orpik's (if any)
So Green - a more complete, mostly offensive d-man gets a deal that comes out to $5.25M per year in terms of cap hit.
Bryce Salvador - a defenseman much more similar to Free Candy in terms of style and overall on-ice contribution - gets a deal that comes out to $2.9M per year cap hit.
I'll make adjustments to my initial projection and overpay a bit to keep him here...
If they offer Orpik five years, $19 million total ($3.8M per year), I think he takes it.
i know he'll take it stoosh...but would you give it the thumbs up?
Guy Junker on ESPN Radio 1250 just read a report from one of the Canadian sports networks (maybe Fan590 or the one in Montreal...I didn't hear the station) that Montreal and Boston have both dropped out of the Hossa sweepstakes because they've got reason to believe he's staying in Pittsburgh.
dan - if the Canadian website sucks so much you can always turn to an American site for up to date info.
Plus it's a holiday here, so you should be greatful someone is working and keeping you folks updated.
Ed Willes provided his own take on the Hossa situation:
Marian Hossa, for example, has already turned down seven years at $7 million per to play with the Penguins. It's difficult to see what the Canucks offer that the Penguins can't, and if Hossa is swayed by the difference between $7 million a year and $8 million a year, do you really want him on your team?

whoa carroll sorry for wanting somewhere reliable to get some news from. lord forbid people do their jobs. i'm on every website possible right now.
aron - that's what i've been saying about ho$$a all along
hopefully they can get this orpik deal done before noon, and focus on bringing naslund back
11:03 Eric McErlain - Does one at time work for you?
11:03 James Mirtle - it's going to be interesting, isn't it?
11:03 James Mirtle - sure - or if there are some related ones, we can group them together
11:03 Eric McErlain - How about that Avery question.
It's usually more interesting..i think they're in the making out stage right now.
live chat at fanhouse.. woot
my attempt at an alley oop.
11:04 [Comment From Aron]
Dr. is the sky falling in Pittsburgh?
11:04 Eric McErlain - I would say no, but I'll leave the floor open to James on this one.
11:05 James Mirtle - It might. I think the GM really has his work cut out there
I don't know how to quit you doctor.

TSN is reporting that the Pens are closing in on an extension for Geno. Going to look a lot like Crosby's deal.
nice try dan. this is like reading joe morgan's answers on firejoemorgan.com.
it deserves it's won Gorespace.
both malk and sid are a steal at $8.7/yr.
ya that wasn't really an answer........

A well-placed source said it would take a "minor miracle" for Hossa to be anything more than another one that got away, but the Oilers are baiting the hook this time with at least $9 million US per year for a slick scorer who would solidify the top line with Ales Hemsky and Shawn Horcoff.
Marian Hossa, for example, has already turned down seven years at $7 million per to play with the Penguins.
I have read several reports that he has not turned down the offer, rather he has just not responded yet. Sounds more like a guy that is actually exploring his worth rather than just looking for somewhere else to go. Thats my optimistic spin anyway.
@ Aron -
If we retain Orpik's Yard Sales for a cap hit of $3.8M per year for five years, I'd be thrilled.
In fact, I'd throw on a goofy plaid sportcoat, button my six-inch collar, bring out my best Kingston, Ontario accent and give it the thumbs-up, Don Cherry-style.
Brooks will have just turned 28 when the season starts. His third game this coming season will only be his 300th in the NHL. It seems like he's been here for a lot longer, but he hasn't even played four full seasons worth of games at this level.
It should be noted that defensemen typically take longer to acclimate themselves to this level than forwards typically do. That 300-game mark is about the point when defensemen really begin hitting their stride at this level. I think what we saw of Orpik over most of the last half of the season is more indicative of what he's becoming as opposed to being some flash of brilliance driven by a contract.
Whitney is getting a cap hit of $4M a year to play a relatively one-dimensional game. He's not Sandis Ozolinsh, but he's never going to be a complete defenseman like Niklas Lidstrom. Hell, I don't think Whit's ever going to be as complete a d-man as Gonch was this past year (I just don't think Whit's hockey IQ is that high). But Whit definitely has a value to this team as a puck-moving, mobile defenseman who can generate offense from the point.
In the same vein, Orpik has a value to this team as a physical presence on the boards and in the corners. And while he can't shoot worth a damn, Orpik is actually a very underrated skater and passer (he throws a very good breakout pass), and he's not bad at skating the puck out of the zone.
If you're paying Whitney a $4M/year cap hit to do what he does, $3.8M/year for Orpik seems fair to me.
We'll keep Ho$$a and EDM can have Rolston...
"RDS is reporting that Jaromir Jagr and the NY Rangers could not agree to a contract, making the Blueshirts captain an unrestricted free agent come noon."
Do it
lord forbid people do their jobs.
Try going to a bank in the US on a holiday and see how many people are doing their jobs. Just sayin...
Try getting in the door of a bank or government building on a holiday and see what happens.
And yes, I'm a government employee, so I get all those holidays off. Columbus Day, woo!
Jags and Hossa?...
From Buzz On The Turd:
". The offer on the table to Brooks Orpik is 5yrs 18 million with a partial no trade clause that lets him pick the cities he wants to be traded to."
Try going to a bank in the US on a holiday and see how many people are doing their jobs. Just sayin...
our sports media works on holidays. just sayin...
I'm not sure how much stock to put into the report Junker read here about Hossa staying around. Some of those stations had Hossa's Habs jersey all but getting stitched up on Trade Deadline Day and we saw how quickly things changed.
via KuklasKorner
At Fire & Ice, Tom Gulitti reports:
It appears they have re-signed Jay Pandolfo and Sergei Brylin as well [as Bryce Salvador, reported earlier], but i’m still waiting for comfirmation on that. The Devils have called an 11:15 a.m. conference call with Lou Lamoriello to “discuss the team’s players.” I’ll give updates and more detail when I acquire them.
We could get Huselius and Naslund for close to the price some of these desperate teams are willing to shell out for Hossa
The Bryce Salvador deal doesn't bode well for our chances to keep Orpik. Salvador is an Orpik like player but Brooks is 1000X better.
I can't take this anymore, I'm so restless...
I need to watch Charmed.
our sports media works on holidays
Its arguable our sports media never works. If it were that good, you wouldn't need blogs or Canadian sites to get your news.
i'm an accountant, you don't have to tell me about holiday's off. once again, we're talking the sports media. there's a difference. that's comparing potatoes to watermelons.
@ Flyer Hater -
You say Buzz on the Turd says...
". The offer on the table to Brooks Orpik is 5yrs 18 million with a partial no trade clause that lets him pick the cities he wants to be traded to."
Now go back and read my post at 9:10 AM.
No, I am not Buzz on the Turd. And they couldn't afford me as a source.
As an aside, I think I just got hit in the head with a piece of falling sky. We might want to alert some of the posters over at LGP.com.
At FH:....
At least that would save all the blood from going to your head... well the one on your shoulders.

And this isn't Rob Rossi spewing bullshit, Dreger is usually accurate.
jyo
*minus the nhl. nfl, mlb, and nba never sleep.
Stoosh, I wouldn't want to distract them from figuring out that the Mayan Doomsday Prophecy is actually coming 4 years early.
i cant believe tampagay stole both malones. jerks of the week.
This is why Buzz On The Turd is an absolute joke and should be jobbed at any moment possible. Almost seconds after Dreger posts his story on TSN, dipshit writes "Strong possibility that Evgenin Malkin signing a longterm extension will be announced today."
I wonder where he got that from?
DICK
the lightning have signed former bartender Sam Malone as a "hair double" (whatever that means) for Steve Stamkos.
unconfirmed.
*minus the nhl. nfl, mlb, and nba never sleep.
I'm not exactly sure what that means, but if you trust the MSM for news in any of those sports either its still a big mistake. ESPN usually gets the details on its NFL stories right on about the third try about a week after someone else broke it, then they don't credit the original source. Whatev though, I don't really care about the media in either country, so if you want to trust or distrust either one, be my guest.
BREAKING NEWS: Sources tell TSN the Edmonton Oilers have traded forward Raffi Torres to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Gilbert Brule. Details to follow..
Per TSN (obviously)
@ colin. that's a weak trade by CBJ. desperation city.
ok then..........
that mirtle chat was going nowhere, i gave up. answers were too vague for once.
Eklund's website is down. Talk about karma for spewing garbage all the time.
Per TSN...
Raffi Torres traded from EDM to Columbus.
@dan....i'm closing it as we speak.
This is why Buzz On The Turd is an absolute joke
He also "reported" on Sunday that the Pens were close to obtaining the rights to Liles from Colorado. He signed in Colorado on Sunday. Somehow I doubt Colorado was shopping his rights when they almost had a deal done with him. What a joke.
For Brule...
@aron - that may be the first time i've ever been disappointed in him.
Jyo and everyone else, go over and job in his c-blog. This is his "big day", it would be awesome to ruin it.
