Malkin and Crosby are locked up for a while. It's what we would have wanted.

Being sad is one thing, but some people are going a little overboard IMO. I liked Ruutu also, and it sucks he won't be here, but at the end of the day losing Ruutu isn't going to cost the Pens any games.
It's not going to keep them from the playoffs.
So it's not that big of a deal.
Sometimes the truth hurts, Ruutu was nothing but a role player. And one that can be replaced rather easily at that.

Maybe I'm just a hard ass but to me the most important thing is winning.
Loyalty is great...to an extent. It would be great to keep all the fan favorite players for their entire careers and everyone could hold hands and dance and sing songs.
But if you want to win you have to get rid of people. Ruutu was expendable, Hossa was expendable, Malone and Roberts were expendable.
Going into the post-season the only guy I thought the Pens would have trouble replacing is Orpik. He NEEDS to be signed. The rest of the FAs, well...

Michel is peacing us. No one wants to play for a shit ass coach. Yeah he took us to the SCF, but I thought we had the best team (talent wise) by far. He got out coached horribly in the finals and Babcock is the reason Hossa went to Detroit.

They didn't free up that much cap space, really.
They moved $5.14M off the books by sending Tyutin and Backman out, but took back $2.5M for Zherdev and then whatever they spend to re-sign Fritsche. Assuming Fritsche gets re-signed for $1.0M (not sure what his cap hit in 07-08 was), they only freed up $1.65M in cap space.
I don't know...I could be wrong.
And even still, dealing two defensemen to sign another one, especially when one of those two was Tyutin? I hate to say it, but Tyutin might be a more complete all-around defenseman than Orpik.
