You want to why being a hockey fan is great?
No other sports fan in the United States has to go to Babelfish
to read about a player that their favorite team has allegedly signed.
But that's what we all found ourselves doing Friday morning.

The player is Janne Pesonen. A Finnish forward.
They are finishing the deal apparently. [PG]
Pesonen could be a big deal, or he could be the next Koltsov.
It is a low risk, extremely high reward move.
Ray Shero doesn't seem like they type of guy to move on something he doesn't think will work.

But instead of heading to the studio and laying down a "diss song", which frankly we would have loved to hear, he went to every member of the media who would listen and blamed Lowe for the escalating cost of young players.

Edmonton might be a small market, but it has one of the greatest and surest fan bases among all NHL teams - unlike Vancouver, where we have these fair weather fans all the time, which really frustrates the hell out of me (though it could be a good time to get season tickets from the looks of things). Anyway, Edmonton fans are (more or less) true blue all the way.

To help fill the summertime void (at least until we get the next JP video), coverage of the Tour de France starts on Versucks at 8:30 am today and continues for the next 3 weeks.
The live, in-race announcing team of Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen is just great; world-class great. Be sure to check out their calls at the end of a race, especially sprint finishes. Liggett get so fedetenko'ing excited...they're very fun to listen to.
Race favorites are Australian, Spanish, Russian, Italian, etc...should be a very interesting 3 weeks!

Once again you're short changed by Detroit.
Not only did they steal the league's best backup goalie, and Hossa of course, they also left you dumbfounded when it comes to the Finnish player market.
A couple of months ago the Wings signed Ville Leino, the best player currently playing in Finland. Leino won the Golden Helmet award last season for player of the year.
Pesonen may be the second best player but maybe you're all happy with that? Coming in second behind Detroit is probably something you'll have to get used to. Unless of course you decide to tank for draft picks again.

Dispelling those rumors of a Tampa Bay North(I got Rangers fans already thinking that), Rossi states:
The salary cap, which has increased every year since the NHL returned from the canceled 2004-05 season, stands at $56.7 million. If it does not rise next summer, the Penguins would have 46.8 percent of their cap space available to supplement two superstar centers, a franchise goaltender and a pair of defensemen who provide balance - Whitney has recorded 99 points the past two seasons, and Orpik has paced the team in hits the past three.
Compare that to Tampa Bay, which entered last season with 52.7 percent of its cap space tied to three forwards and a defenseman.
Only two of those forwards, center Vincent Lecavalier and right wing Martin St. Louis, remain with the team. Center Brad Richards was traded to Dallas in February, and defenseman Dan Boyle was dealt to San Jose on Friday.

As for Leino. Many people consider Pesonen more NHL ready then Leino, and Pesonen has also beaten Leino in terms of points in the past two SM-Liiga seasons. Maybe Detroit just, dare I say, made a mistake in going after Leino instead of Pesonen?

I do feel a connection to him as I do speak Russian and was watching him in Juniors and in the RSL. But fact remains, I don't wanna be one of the people with a Crosby, Malkin, or Fleury jersey (No offense to those that have them). So that's the maybe pile.
Orpik - This is the one I'm leaning towards the most. Free Candy is beyond solid, and signed for long term. I'm even leaning towards adding an A because I think he deserves it that much even if he doesn't get it.

Ravine Flyer II - the new wooden coaster at Waldameer in Erie - pretty much beat the crap out of me the same way we beat the crap out of the Rangers in the playoffs. Outside of MAYBE the Thunderbolt at Kennywood, it's easily the best wooden coaster I've ever been on. Relentless in terms of speed and tight turns galore. Lots of air time over some of the smaller hills. Doesn't beat you up quite as much as the T-bolt does, which is good because it means you can ride it more than twice without getting a headache. Absolutely awesome and highly recommended if you're ever up there. Highly recommended.

It looks like Pittsburgh Penguins get yet another forward added to their line up. Yesterday they signed Miroslav Satan and Ruslan Fedotenko, now they have agreed to the terms for a contract for two years with the Janne Pesonen, 28, who had most points in SM-Liiga. The deal is expected to be annonced by the club in the next few days.

Never been a big fan of the Mean Streak. I think it's too big for a wooden coaster and most of the turns and banks feel too drawn out. It's a nice ride, but it lacks the wicked punch of the T-bolt and Ravine Flyer II.

Try riding it an average of 10 times a day, 6 days a week, all summer long.
I became numb to the ride to the point I have no desire to ride it anymore.
We used to play games to see who got to ride with any girls who needed a partner...we usually had to give an announcement looking for someone else who was a single in line so they could ride together...we'd give the person in the booth 'driving' a 'signal' to NOT give the announcement and hop in on the 'inside' so that they would 'squish' us.

The Penguins have agreed to a two-year contract with free-agent forward Matt Cooke.
The deal is worth $1.2 million per season.
Cooke, who will be 30 on Sept. 7, is 5 foot 11, 205 pounds and is an accomplished agitator and penalty-killer.
His addition will help to offset the departure of left winger Jarkko Ruutu, who signed with Ottawa and once was Cooke's teammate with the Canucks.
Cooke had 10 goals, 13 assists and 91 penalty minutes in 78 games with Vancouver and Washington last season.
The Penguins apparently still are working to finalize a contract with left winger Janne Pesonen, a free agent from Finland.

That only shows the character that he has. Look over his career. When he was asked to step up and be a leader, he failed to do so. You can have him, and when he bails next year because "he is looking for the best opportunity to win a cup", and he fails to re-sign, you can come back here and have this same discussion.
