The summer is the time for us to experiment with crap.
We're working on a new flashblog that may change the internet.
We're working on a couple of other small things, too.

But the most pressing matter is...

**************************************************

...load time for the main page of the blog.
(although a new pressing matter will be finding your place again in the post, like you just did.)

WE HAD PUSHED THE NUMBER OF POSTS ON THE MAIN PAGE DOWN TO 3.

YouTubes AND WHATNOT DRASTICALLY AFFECT THE LOAD TIMES FOR THE SITE,
EVEN WHEN THINGS ARE CACHED IN YOUR BROWSER.

Adding that "click here to read more" link will let the main page load 30 times faster.

We've always been with the school of thought that doing this would bury some great photoshops
and make people think that we have 5-sentence posts.

But times are changing.
Nearly every blog goes with this format.

Quick Shortcut Around It:
When you see a new post, just click the title of it and pretend you didn't.
It's still an extra mouse-click, but you won't have to find your place again once you start reading.

HOW IT WILL AFFECT YOUR SHIT:

-- It adds one more click to your day.
-- Will make finding a certain PS or pic harder to do.

-- For C-Blog, there may be an upside.
When you click the "read more" thing, the comments will appear beneath the post after the click.

Let me be the FIRST to say, I approve

also, I think Gary will get a lot of votes.

First.

I like the new format, so I subsequently voted for Gary Roberts.

I don't like the new format.

I say stick with the current format.

Often times when I want to revisit a photoshop or post, it is much easier to just scroll through rather then to pick through a list of postings.

I can dig it.

@ Dan -

I know Alstott hasn't done much the last couple of years, but he'll go down with Steve Largent and Curt Warner (*the Seahawks RB) as my three favorite NFLers ever.

I loved watching Alstott run back when he played for Purdue, and I was hoping like hell that he would've ended up in Pittsburgh. Friggin' Jamain Stephens.

So new format ... is that all? I'm okay with it ...

I don't understand all the fuss about Hossa, though ... he can do what he wants and might end up here still

FIRST!

This format works fine until someone complains that the firewall at work won't let them access the site anymore so you guys better hurry up and change it back.

WOOOOOOO!

Everything seems fine the way it is now, but changing it isnt going to make me wet the bed and cut my wrists in the closet. i vote for it

the first rule of a good poll is to not give people the option of giving you information you don't need.

I voted Gary Roberts.

but I also vote AGAINST changing the format. The main page has always worked well for me the way it is. I like having it all on one page.

@ IHK -

I'm a little disappointed with Hossa because I was hoping he'd just sign. But I figured this was his likely course of action, especially since he's the biggest name on the block. I just hope he gives the Pens another chance to counter what another team offers.

If he signs elsewhere, so be it. Good God, we still have Sid, Geno, Staal, Sykie, Fleury. I think Orpik comes back, which makes me happy because you can never have enough yard sales.

And I'd be very intrigued at the thought of getting someone like Ryder or Huselius.

I mentioned in the last post another angle that might be worth exploring...maybe not this year, but a year down the road or so. Because most unrestricted free agents tend to be overpaid (and even Hossa will likely be overpaid), maybe they look to make a deal for a younger winger that 1) projects to develop into an impact NHLer and 2) is young enough to be plugged into the longterm core...someone like Alexander Radulov from Nashville or someone like that. It might cost them something significant, but you never know.

Just a thought...it makes the whole long-term commitment thing a lot easier to absorb.

Sorry, guys, polldaddy isn't working.
Or is it?

I can't get it to come up on my computer.

Everyone's gonna have to vote again when things start working.

New format - You guys are the pros,do what you think is best.

When it comes to computers, I ride the really short bus, so I'll just keep clicking buttons & see what happens.

As often as weather forecasters are "dead on" with their predictions, what you may have experienced was an Alberta Clipper or some lake effect snow.

When it comes to weather, trust the groundhog.

When it comes to free agency, trust Shero.

@Stoosh: Yeah, I read the last post and was commenting. I wanted him to sign but everything's up in the air and I hold nothing against him if he chooses another place.

Like I said over at BigK's blog ...
We'll be fine and Shero has enough confidence that he'll be back, so I trust Shero.

But I do feel bad for Shero. No matter what he does, someone isn't gonna be happy ...

But I'll keep my faith ...

Molinari article on Hossa and other concerns.

Shero on where he left things with Hossa...

"I explained to [Hossa] that I've got other free agents on our team and I've got other players, like Marc-Andre Fleury, that I'm trying to work on a contract with," Shero said.

"The word I used with him and his agent [Ritch Winter] is 'clarity.' I need some clarity with the situation here. I've got things tied up, waiting, and I need to move forward in the best interest of our hockey team.

"We've got the Ryan Malones and Brooks Orpiks and Pascal Dupuises and Adam Halls and [Georges]) Laraques, and they all played significant roles for our hockey team. They're all important to me."

Love this, too...

"He's taken us for a test drive for three months," Shero said. "He knows our organization, knows our ownership, knows our management, knows our coaches and certainly knows our players and our fans. I'm not sure what you can find out on July 1 from other cities, but that's his decision, not mine."

And finally...

While Hossa clearly wants to explore his options, he apparently hasn't ruled out returning.

"We look to be his first choice, but I believe he's going to look at July 1, just to be sure," Shero said. "We'll see what that brings both of us."

I Have Kasparaitis said...

Just because I'm a jobber ...

yeah! He said Malones first ...

Now that I got that out of my system ... Shero, I love ... oops, that was by accident.

Stoosh, that makes me feel better ... maybe my headaches have been from Bugsy stress ... maybe Bugsy is a bug that is like Kasparaitis? *laughs* I know that it doesn't guarantee anyone staying but that makes me feel better about the situation ... Mr. Molinari, I want to give you a hug for your journalism ...

Man, I love Shero, but one thing that really irks the shit out of me is when he adds an 'S' to players names.

For example, from what stoosh just posted:

"We've got the Ryan Malones and Brooks Orpiks and Pascal Dupuises and Adam Halls and [Georges]) Laraques..."

Aaarrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

i picked gary roberts cause thats what gary roberts would do.

im reading over the entire last season since i missed a few months. the old format is great for that, since a whole month or so worth of posts is right there.

nowadays it dont matter much.

Stoosh said...

The way Shero explained things to Molinari is exactly how this organization needs to address its free agents.

It appears as if Shero has set dollar value ranges on each player and those ranges offer some flexibility as they relate to the rest of the team, but not much.

Pensblog Staff said...

this will only pertain to the main page of the site.
if you go to the archives and click a month, for example, they will all appear.

Comments are a pain in the ass on the new format when they all show up at the bottom. No avatars, and no break line between the posts.

Just not pleasing to look at.

Then if you want to post a comment, you have to click another link to come to this page.

I was hoping to see that Blogger worked similar to Livejournal, but I suppose it doesn't. I guess for you guys (staff) to do this, you had to use that expandable posts hack. I was hoping to see something along the lines of LJ's <*lj-cut><*/lj-cut> code, but it seems Blogger does not have one. If this were true, it would be cool to have the first post be a FULL post. Then every older post be summarized like this one is now. Maybe you can still do that? When you make a new post, leave it full. Then take the most recent old one and throw it in the cut code. Maybe?

sh0ez said...

The idea I posted would allow for the same old cblog to work like it did for the most recent post. Nothing would change. Then every old post could be cut like this one. It would allow for only one post to need loaded and it would keep essentially the same basic format. The only exception would possibly be for a PS Expo where all the image and such could be behind the cut in the current post, too. If that makes sense.

i thought i hated mcdonalds before, but i just got around to watching SuperSizeMe. uh, good stuff..

anyone know where i can get gary roberts' workout regimen??

i like sh0ez' idea. if possible.

penstone410 said...

@jefe
supersizeme was an insane movie.. i havent eaten fast food since ive seen it, it ruined it that much for me!!

I Have Kasparaitis said...

@jefe: Luke Schenn used the same trainer as Gary Roberts did when he was younger ... so ask Pierre McGuire because I'm sure he would know ...

But maybe Kovy could help you out a bit with training though

SuperSize Me makes me sick because of the one throwing up scene he did early in the movie after sitting in his car for the longest time. The smell of McDonald's food makes me sick though ... I used to throw up when I smelt their chicken or hamburgers. Yuck ... though I can eat Taco Bell and they have the weirdest meat ...

joosh1500 said...

ya taco bell's meat seems like it would be gross but nobody made a movie about it so i still like it haha

jefe penguino said...

@penstone -dont blame ya.

@ihk -that scene u mention was perty bad. i never liked mcdonalds but i hated it forever when i moved from the burgh to boston a long ass time ago. a 10+ hour trip with nothing but mcd's to the left and right. disgusting.

and thank you for that video help. but i may still ask pee-air..

i only cared to watch it in case there was some parody with the next movie im going to watch, Super High Me. doug benson is highlarious..

I Have Kasparaitis said...

@jefe: Ha, Doug Benson ... I watched him on Last Comic Standing (which I have forgotten about ... the season started already, didn't it ... yes, it did ... me = joke.) he was funny but not the best, but I do practically live off of Gary Gulman's comedy who was a few seasons before him ...

Alright I'm going to bed because I actually have to work ... lameblog. Good night, c-bloggers. And whatever you do, Staff, I trust yinz ...

So I went to the Clarks concert (just assuming all you yinzers out there know of 'em) and during the song 'born to late', Blaise changed a whole verse to say:

"Geno show me how you shoot that thing,
and Hossa will you help us win a ring,
and Sidney all the joy and love you bring..."

Needless to say, I was floored.

BlacknGold66 said...

Super Size Me pissed me off. Actually, Morgan Spurlock just pisses me off because he over-generalizes things.

He's also prone to the melo-dramatic.

Nobody said McDonald's was healthy to begin with (although his movie and the "movement" that came from it forced McD's to "trim the fat" on their menu temporarily and add healthly alternatives)... so obvoisly eating it three meals a day for 30 days is going to have ill effects.

I saw his show "30 days" in which he and his wife had to live off of minimum wage jobs.

My problem was that it was so damn clear that he had never actually had to go through something like that because they were still buying things that didn't need, spending money on things that could wait, and the kicker... cutting off the stems of broccoli and chucking it in the trash.

When you are scraping buy (and I know from experience, as most of you who are in or went to college on your own dime) you eat every damn thing you buy. You also don't stick to your special diets. You suck it up and eat ramen.

He's a hack.

I'm still going to go to the beige comments page because it's much easier on the eyes and in a column-like setup. The black widescreen-looking comments piss me the fuck off.

Shero = genius btw. I believe in the guy. But you all knew that already.

debrisslide said...

@usnbarton - That's really, really, really awesome. Makes me almost not hate the Clarks. They're not even from Pittsburgh, they're from like Carmichaels or something. Their songs are kind of catchy but annoying after awhile and when I hear them on the radio I always have to turn it.

jefe penguino said...

i havnt seen 30 days the show and dont care to. but at the end of the movie he does say that obviously no one is eating mcd's 3 times a day everyday, but a lot do eat it several times a week which cant be that good for you either. that movie makes me want to run 10 miles a day.

also @BnG -dictionaryblog color scheme is much better.

So... I know hockey is very different from TV, especially Grey's Anatomy. But in this debate about blog format, there is a blog that I am a long time reader of called www.greysanatomyinsider.com which has (in my opinion) a great format. For some of its shorter posts there is no link. For the longer ones, there is a "Continue Reading" link that jumps to a new page at the place where you stop reading (it scrolls down to the new information for you) and does not open a new window. It also has the comments at the end of the post. I like this because I hate having it open a new window and it scrolls down for you so you don't have to get lost. Just some thoughts...

It doesn't matter all that much to me, but if I HAD to pick one extreme, I'd go with "no," just because the loading time for the page does not take ALL that long for me, and it's nice to just scroll through everything and not worrying about missing a crucial PS.
