@stephen s.: I think your artwork is awesome ... great job, btw ...

I'm gonna watch the Baby Pens and hopefully not see them fall too ... bad week ...

Euro 08 Tourney is already making me mad ... Alexander Frei got hurt ... I like him ... injuries curse my players once more.

Looks like a long summer once more ... maybe the Olympics will help out, though ...

My first post here. I just wanted to really give you the appreciation you all deserve. Everyone, from staff to the comment-crew, you have made this season a hell of an enjoyable one. I don't know quite why I haven't posted until just yet, I am not quite sure.

Not only have you introduced me to different blogs throughout the internet, offering all kinds of perspective on hockey, you've made available awesome post game and pregame talk and commentary that I haven't been able to find elsewhere.

And you do it with wit/humor.

Excellent, and I will be a diehard reader this entire summer.

Then Ruutu comes along and makes them all cry.

CHARLIE SIGHTING

As I was coming home from Vallejo, I am sure Charlie and his significant other passed me on interstate 80. I thought they were heading for Sacramento, but they took the exit for Napa. My guess is they are going on the Napa Wine Country tours, or they booked seats on the Napa Valley Wine Train. It's a beautiful weekend with temps in the low 80's, so I am sure he and his mystery dude will have a great time.

Did I read that right? Those clods have already dented the Cup? Why don't they just toss it out of a speeding car, or place it on train tracks? Batting practice, maybe? The Pens should have won. They would treat Lord Stanley with care. God only knows what individual acts of perversion that poor Cup has witnessed. I am so looking forward to next season. Save Lord Stanley!!!

I'm still on the fence about the "new" cooking technique (baked vs fried). Seems like if you get them baked, they don't have that same crunch. Maybe I'll try the well done option even if it is a 45 min wait minimum.

re: cup abuse.

I posted this right before the new post, so I guess I'll do it again.

The cup has been pissed it. It's been used as an ashtray by King Clancy for a whole summer. A drunken member of the Ottawa Silver Seven tried to kick it across the rideau canal... they left there overnight. Fortunately it was a frozen over. Some Canadiens left it sitting beside the road after they had to get it out of the car to change a tire.

Like it or not, stories like "some idiot knocked it off the bar at Cheli's place" are what makes the cup so legendary. It doesn't come home with the team and sit in a glass case the rest of it's life. It goes out to strip clubs with Mess, and swims in Mario's pool.

oh ps, how good is luca caputi?
I hear a lot of talk but never got to see him play at all. =/
I hope he's awesome, just so we can have someone on the team with the name Luca. That's a photoshop goldmine.

Stoosh said...

Whatever happens in free agency this summer might indeed suck out the wazoo for Pens fans, but I'll take this system any friggin' day over what we had before the lockout. I can remember sitting at games in 2002-03 and 2003-04 begging for this type of a system to exist.

At least this gives the Pens the opportunity to keep a core of several players together for a number of years - something we never would've had under the old system.

It also allows us an opportunity to bid for players who are on the market because of a similar situation with their previous teams.

Best of all, it prevents one team from getting too far ahead of the rest of the league, so there should never be teams like what we saw pre-lockout from the Wings, Avs, Rangers, etc.

Dr. Turkleton said...

if there's no lockout:

NHL = MLB

Pens = Pirates

Dr. Turkleton said...

or WORSE....

Pens = Las Vegas Penguins.

Flyer Hater said...

I don't get why the announcers were saying, "John Curry has a bright future with the Penguins". Ummm, I think we have the goaltending position pretty solidified for the next 12 years.

wilsmith said...

There is a kind of ironic humor to all this.

A team like the Pens needed this system to compete, and there is at least the likelihood they could be one of the first teams lose a decent group of players because of it.

debrisslide said...

Luca Caputi is 19 or something like that. He's a goofy-looking kid.

I talked to my dad (who was more into hockey than I was in years past) and he broke down the pros and cons of the new NHL over the old NHL. Obviously the new NHL has helped to build a great team for the Penguins, and I know it's worth the complications and problems sometimes. Still, players get passed around*, and it's obviously frustrating.

I don't even understand business or management all that well. I'm just getting antsy.

Random: I kind of think the WBS Pens site looks more badass than the NHL Penguins site. Their penguin graphic looks more evil, too.

Stoosh said...

@ Wilsmith

Luca Caputi may eventually be a bigger legend as a prospect than Letang was.

Caputi scored 51 goals and 111 points in 66 games for the Niagara IceDogs of the OHL this season; he added 17 points (8G, 9A) in 10 playoff games.

111 points in the OHL is a very big deal because there's typically a good balance of offense and defense to the games (Steve Stamkos had 105 points, but Caputi is a year older). Niagara played a fairly wide-open, run-and-gun game this year - almost similar to what many teams out of the Quebec League play. So that may have had something to do with his point totals being a little inflated.

I've seen him play a handful of times and also heard some opinions on him from people I'd trust quite a bit. Take Max Talbot's grit, speed and flashes of skill and mix them with Ryan Malone's size and willingness to do the little things a power forward needs to do. He's an antagonist as well...kind of a Ruutu Lite. And mix in Colby Armstrong's personality; by all accounts, he's a big character guy who should fit right in with this group.

His scoring at the NHL level will likely never reach the same levels it did in juniors, as we've seen with Max to this point (tangent: that could change next year with Talbot). But Caputi should score more consistently than an average third or fourth-liner. The wildcard here, as always, is how he could play with guys like Sid and Malkin. He's shown an ability to finish, so he's definitely one to keep an eye on.

Dr. Turkleton said...

my take on Caputi from seeing him play once up in St. Catherines & on tv is that his hands are NHL-ready...it's his foot-speed and all those other intangibles that young players trying to make the jump need to work on...

if he could turn into a Kevin Stevens/Ryan Malone type player down the road...the Pens found their diamond in the haystack with this kid.

[Hossa: 23:13]

Dr. Turkleton said...

kj...

hahaha....that might be an 'easter egg' in the game somewhere!

Stoosh said...

RE: Caputi -

Turk is right...when I made the comparison to Talbot's "grit and speed", I shoud've just said "energy". Caputi doesn't seem to have Talbot's speed. His skating stride is a little closer in form to Malone's or Staal's.

I have often thought that there should be a kind of glossary explaining all of the inside jokes and references around here (like the "fuck you sandwich" you mentioned, Steve, Free Candy, HCMT, etc.). I've been reading tPB since the middle of last season and there are times when I have no idea what someone is referencing.

Dr. Turkleton said...

stoosh...

I'm glad it's that way than having great speed & no hands [see, Koltsov, Konstantin or Fata, Rico]...

it was probably a huge plus for him and Jeffrey to get some WB/S time in just to know what they have to work on to take the next step [Jeffrey's another one I'd like to keep track of, and being a 6th rounder is unbelievable]

that draft class, although WAY too early to know for sure, has TONS of potential: Caputi, Bortuzzo, Vellieux, Jeffrey, Alex Grant, Casey-Zabotel...

wonder if Shero & Co. can work some more magic starting in the 3rd round...

Check out Jesse Marshall's stuff over at Faceoff Factor on the draft picks and prospects.

I can recall sitting up in the stands with Jesse during a camp practice at Mellon Arena prior to the 2005-06 season and seeing Letang for the first time.

We were all there to see Crosby, obviously, but as the practice went on, we also kept noticing the little defenseman who was moving the puck like a veteran, always seemed to be in the right position, and was being an absolute SOB along the boards. And he kept it up the entire practice.

That was the first time we got to see him and I think that evening, we were both on the boards at LGP.com talking Letang up.

Can I take a guess on who Charlie's marrying? I, by chance, stumbled on this piece of gold as I was searching for "Slap Shot" clips ... Eric Nystrom has played 7 playoff games & last one was in California against San Jose ...

Note, have your children leave the room ... it's imitating the scene at the end w/ Ned ...

Oh wait ... maybe a Ranger has him beat ...
Shanahan and McCarty

I'm sorry for this, but I'm bored and have nothing better to do w/ my time as of right now ...

@wilsmith,
We all know that poor Lord Stanley has suffered all kinds of abuse. It's fun to make fun of the Red Wings abusing it now. God only knows what acts of sin Zetterberg will do to it. Stanley's worst nightmare: Karoke night with the Wings!!

I can't believe the staff pulled this today.

I went with my wife and inlaws to pick out a new puppy from the local SPCA. We find the sweetest most perfectest Spaniel/Poodle mix for them and are informed AFTER SELECTING IT that another family put in their application about 10 minutes before we got there.

So after coming to terms with losing out on the pooch.. I see this post.

It's a good thing I'm not emo... I'd be blasting whiny music and cutting myself just to see if I can still feel pain.

I'll bet if we had a parade for the Pens, it'd be better than Detroit's.

The highlight of my day was watching that video of MAF autographing pucks.

And taking about 20 showers.

And Prince's guitar solo here.

If a Stanley Cup ring doesn't help raise your worth, then I have to wonder why it's mentioned so often in reference to those that have them?

This is continued discussion about Hossa from the last post. Anyway, you convinced me. Hossa didn't win the Cup so obviously the Pens will be able to sign him for $3 million a year now. How was I so dumb??? Only Cup winner get big long term contracts. You know, people like Ovechkin. Pens will resign every player and trade TK for Ovechkin. Someone call the guy from Detroit and start planning next years parade route through da Burgh.

@Dr. Turk: Mirtle has a pretty solid article about it on his site ...it's not new so you might have to scroll down the page for it. I don't know enough about it, though ...

Malkin and Bugsy

& for Dr. Turk ... just insert Whitney in as J.D.

The song "Don't Look Back in Anger" by Oasis just came on my itunes.

Also
I was browsing Hockey Reference, and I saw there is a Bill Thomas from PGH in the NHL for Phoenix. Hmmm. . . More of the Mario Generation? Fox Chapel native. . .

@Dr. Turk

After Dark is only good when Hellmuth freaks out and then goes to the bar to bitch with everyone else listening.

And that facebook poker thing is no fun. I like pokerstars, I just don't have money to spend haha.

And I heard about the Hockey Night theme. Snoop's offering the ringtone if anyone's interested over at TSCS.

I wonder why Malone laughs at the name Adrian Peterson ...

I love the Whit part of the interview ... I dare say it's my fav. part ... "You're such a hero!," "You're a media whore!" & "Yeah, I got hair on my chest. That's my tattoo." *laughs* I love this team ...

Dude...you seem a tad hostile.

It's a bit immature to act like anyone was saying he'd only want $3 million - no one ever implied as much.

How can you deny that a Stanley Cup ring would have improved his market value just seems beyond me???

Staff you were not the first people (person) to remind me today of what could have been. My brother called first thing this morning and invited me for dinner as I wouldn't be watchin game seven so I had no excuse.

It hurt when he said it, but it hurt even more reading it here.

Thanks.

@michelle: Hmm ... I'm pretty much a dork so whatever I write is gonna sound nerdy ... "We want Pittsburgh's Own Ryan Malone to stay that way" ... wait, way too stupid ... maybe include something with his nickname ... I don't know I shouldn't have asked, but you should buy it because apparently "it's a waste of my money" ... *mumbles "jobbers, can't do anything around here"*

@chica: I wouldn't say that all the time or you might get arrested ... your lucky those 2 aren't underrage ... *laughs*

Just for you, chica ... be warned, men, I did specify the name chica ... (Charlie, you can look)
Ned Does it better ...

Carroll said...

chica - so what were they wearing...I missed it.

I bet Sid looked great, as always. My guess black or charcoal grey suit with light blue shirt/tie.

Cherry - he's been getting more subtle the last few games or did he go all out for the last game.

HNIC - will never be the same!!! Damn contract agreements. I have a feeling I might be saying that all summer. Things will definately not be the same the next time I watch a Pens game on CBC. Really sad.

Kat said...

@ihk Whoa, never seen the Sid vids before, wasn't prepared for that. haha. Nice.

I'm all aboard the "Keep Malone in Pitt" Campaign but also, I need to be signed up for the "The Free Candy must be stored here as well". Figures he'd grow tremendously on me with the threat of leaving. The thought of him hitting 4 of our guys in 15 seconds just doesn't sit well.

I Have Kasparaitis said...

@kat: I make it my business to know what my players do ... I happened to remember someone sending that ... a friend of mine who is a puck bunny ... it's very nice, though ...

I think I mentioned it before Free Candy is a combination of Gill and Letang defensively ... he's a strong, smooth skater w/ great passing abilities (like LeGame) and has the ability to move people and isn't afraid to muck it up a bit (like USS Gill.) Besides, Sarge needs someone like him to playing on his line ...

New Post is up and more depressing news ...

TheNWChica said...

@kaspar: Hubba hubba! Yes, Ned's version is still the best.

And no worries about me being arrested...I am all look but no touch; some of the younger ones are just way too young. Even the overagers still seem like babies to me, which is crazy since Steve is actually younger than the 3 overagers we had this year. Crazysauce I tells ya!

@carroll: Bing did rock the dark charcoal grey with a very fine pinstripe, but he had a white on white shirt and a dove grey tie...a tiny bit shiny so maybe a nice silk.

Cherrysuitblog....it was Xmas at the Igloo with Donald S. rocking the red velvet jacket, a cream colored shirt with a the white color and cuffs; and the lapel has a cream rosebud.
