Rounds 2-7 of the NHL Entry Draft

Scotiajoke Place

:: Coverage begins at 9:30am today.
Versus refuses to confirm they are covering it.
TSN will be.
NHL network should have it as well.
[nhl.com]

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::

[pit.<span class=

We miss gamedays, so why not.
Pens will pick sometime in the afternoon.
They were silent in the first round, which is fine by us.

Only other Pens news is that Malkin is not going anywhere, anytime soon. [PG]
Malkin's agent, said a new deal is coming.

"Malkin's base salary for 2008-09 will be $984,200, the maximum allowed by the league's collective bargaining agreement. Barry said he and general manager Ray Shero have the "framework" of a new deal in place, and that "I don't see any major hurdles" that would prevent an agreement."

:::::::::::::::::::

The first night of the draft was insane.

Tons of deals going down. [Faceoff Factor]

:: Bumberger is a BlueJacket [Puck-rakers]

:: Tanguay a Hab. [Four Habs Fan]

:: Cammaileri a flame.[ Battle of California]

And maybe the biggest trade of the day:

Joke is a Coyote. [ True Coyote Love]
[Puckdaddy] has more on this one.

It all overshadowed Tampa Bay selecting Steve Stamkos first overall.

Solid player.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Short post city.

Go Pens

I had hoped Tampa did the unthinkable and not drafted the blonde-haired wonder. I hate watching Lightning games. Now I'm obligated to watch a few :(

And Florida = Biggest joke ever.

Kat said...

oh yeah, and the Umberger deal totally caught me off guard. I wish I had the NHL network since Versus is a big pile of crap

AmericanHero269 said...

First off, draft day I hope has some punch for the Pens, because it has been a long summer. Do something.

Did you guys see that post about Shero in the Tribune? He "listened" to offers and had other offseason comments. About Hossa: "Neither optimistic nor pessimistic about the signing". Isn't his agent the guy who urges money over everything else? If so, I don't like the guy, not that I can really blame him.

Go Pens. Go July 1st.

TheFandangler said...

Tampa is second on my NHL team list so any good they get is good for me. Marty, Vinny, and the gang will probably be a lot better than that debacle that took place last season.

debrisslide said...

I should start cutting highlight reels. . .if only to include some sick music selections. The ones I see on YouTube are strangely lacking.

Stamkos is solid, but I still think a little overrated. Oh well.

eileenover said...

I wish Versus didn't suck and showed the rest of the draft.

penstone410 said...

versus is as bad as pierre mcguire is creepy..

sh0ez said...

Umberger in Columbus. I lol'd.

The Malkin articles (both on PG and *ugh* Rossi) are calming. Makes me feel better.

KJ said...

the way the flyers fans were chirping, i thought RJ was an important part of their future and at least they didn't have to trade any of their key players blah blah blah.

and i don't know why, but i giggled a bit when i read joke is a yote.

eileenover said...

@kj

I giggle just hearing Joke's name.

daismog said...

My left shoe reports that Ray Shero will trade the rights to every RFA in the WB/S roster in a Seven-team deal that will land the Pens 3 second round picks, five third round picks, 47 4th round picks, the other Ruutu, two Staals, and three Colby Armstrongs.

megz590 said...

atleast now everytime the flyers play us we don't have to hear about how Umberger is a "home grown" plum native who we missed out on.

Watching the rerun of the draft on NHL Network right now and here's what I think...

I think Pierre needed to go get new shorts after Toronto took Luke Schenn.

I think the NHL Draft is infinitely more entertaining than the NFL Draft simply because we don't have to deal with Mel Kiper.

I think Steve Stamkos is going to be fun to watch.

I think the Florida Panthers are going to draw precisely fifteen fans next year.

I think I know the cat on Nashville's logo is supposed to be a sabre-toothed tiger, but I think it still looks like it's gagging on something.

I think the Isles wanted Filatov but thought they could get him at #7, and that's why they made the trade with Toronto. I think it's hysterical that if that's what the Isles wanted, it backfired.

Speaking of which, I think Nikita Filatov just became one of my new favorite players in the league.

And I think I'm dating myself with this video, because I actually do remember this song from the late 1980s, but I think I found what Lucky Pierre does when he's not drooling over Leafs draft picks or paying credence to ridiculous rumors. Check out the dude in the yellow.

Thanks go out to Turk for keeping me posted of draft-day trades and the like while I was in town at the Buccos game.

Umberger's parents must be happy that he's playing close by in C-bus.

I feel I must repeat that Pittsburgh has a ridiculously high ratio of hot women. There were at least a half a dozen 7's or higher in my section alone tonight.

@Eileen: Quit being Debbie Downer. You're cute, trust me. Don't forget... confidence is sexy!

...just sayin'

Stoosh said...

@ NWChica -

I'm glad I'm not the only one who liked that song. I found the Youtube clip searching for "Holiday Road" (from the National Lampoon Vacation movies) and that came up on the related search listing.

If I may, I'll echo BNG66's sentiments as well.

TheNWChica said...

@stoosh: the dance station here in town has an 80's show on Thursday mornings that I always love because I know just about all the songs; and that one was played last week.

NLVacation is probably one of my top 5 movies of all time. We had a few car trips when I was a kid that shades of the Griswolds like the days before cell phones where my mom, sister and I walked up and down the same hill in SanFran 4 times while my dad was trying to find us while driving.

Stoosh said...

@ Eileen -

By the way, unless something unforeseen comes up, the Stooshes are in for C-blog Wingfest next Saturday.

Just let us know which QS&L to show up at and we'll be there.

I'm off to bed, folks.

Gotta make the trek to Erie tomorrow for a graduation party, but that means I get to hit up some Tim Horton's for the ride home. I'll be back on tomorrow night discussing some actual Pens draft picks and maybe a deal or two...King Shero seems to have a tendency to do something none of us expect, so we'll see.

sh0ez said...

@ stoosh, eileen, etc.: I'd possibly be down for wingfest. I'm not much for wings, but I'd still be down for going to QS&L. Robinson is a good 50 miles out. I don't know how Joose feels about it, maybe she will go? Has she said anything about it yet (I haven't been around much lately). I know for sure that me and the girl are interested. I'll keep updated.

...I'm kinda sad to see a Staal brother go to thw west... and with Phoenix...

Docciavelli said...

The first thing I thought of when I saw the Umberger to CBJ deal was, "guess Malone won't be heading there."

Columbus is doing a good job building a team that'll continue as the West's whipping boy. No matter how good Rick Nash and Zherdev are, there isn't a single pivot-man on that team I'd want on either of my first two lines. Wouldn't it have made more sence for them to make a push for Cammaleri or Jokinen? Or are they hoping to land Holik?

wilsmith said...

Is Stamkos the guy that almost killed himself in the speed skating portion of a skills competition?

The Big K said...

Yes wilsmith, he is.

Stoosh said...

@ Johnny P -

Columbus is going to be an absolute force in about two years.

They've got tons of cap space, so I'd expect them to make a push for a bigger-name free agent or two - they could use help on the blueline.

In addition to Nash and Umberger, they've got a chance to bring Vyborny back...one of the more underrated UFA's out there. They could be in the running for Malone because they've got cap space to spend. They've got Pascal Leclaire in net. They've still got Derrick Brassard and Jakub Voracek (who made a case to be the first overall pick last year) in the pipeline, and once Gilly Brule finds his game at this level, he should be solid as well. Throw Filatov into the mix and they're going to be a very good team in a year or two.

wilsmith said...

thanks big man, I couldn't remember.

everybody needs brought back down to earth once in a while, he took it well.

BlacknGold66 said...

I just hope the Pens pay a visit to C-bus this coming season.

Especially if Bugsy goes there.

Tickets to games in Columbus are cheaper and it's a close drive for most of us.

Cblog trip to Columbus for a Pens game would be pretty sweet.

Brett said...

So the final Staal went to Phoenix? They're officially my favorite team in the west. I can't wait for Turris to play, along with Staal and Olli. NOBODY Believed me when i said before last season that they'd be a cup contender within the next 5 seasons. They're starting to put together something decent.

sirimanni said...

The Joke Master should be thrilled Florida traded him like fools. I mean who would want to still be there when they don't even throw rats or have the Beezer (Vanbiesbrouck) anymore?

hell yeah after the last few drafts and this one, the coyotes are going to be fun. joke, beodker, turris, mueller, some others.. staal? hopefully some of these d-men picks pan out too. cant wait to go to some games this season and future.

@BnG
I feel I must repeat that Pittsburgh has a ridiculously high ratio of hot women.

That was Nathan Moon last year.

TheNWChica said...

Looks like not as many Dub-ya players are going in the later rounds, but one name I really noticed was Mitch Wahl from Spokane...why did he have to be picked by Calgary? Then the Canucks have to play against him a squillion times a season. lol

Good choice babyStaal to the Desert Dogs. I think he'll not only be able to learn well with Wayne and all the other youngins out there, but it gets him away from being the 'other Staal' sort of like I think about with Mark who probably isn't compared as much to Eric and Gronk since he's a defenceman.

PittHockey said...

Moon.

someone give me details.

Beav said...

glad Nathan is happy to be drafted by Pittsburgh but I don't think he should be too excited to play with Sid, Gino and Gary too soon.

Nathan Moon doesn't even have a wiki page. . .let's see. He's 18, and he had 77 points in 68 games, yet with a +/- of -25? According to the OHL website. He wears #10. . .good choice, Nathan. Who knows? He's also a center, like we needed more of those. . .

michelle said...

Ps, @flyerhater,

What do you think will happen with Fleury?

Mike Georger said...

pens site says moon is a winger not a center

interesting choice of the two goalies, could be a sign curry is going to see some backup time if conklin doesnt come back

Flyer Hater said...

Michelle, I've heard many rumors from credible league sources that the Pens are not satisfied with Fleury's performance up to this point. The plan is to draft a bunch of goaltenders for the future to take Fleury's spot long-term. However, in the interim, the Pens are looking to trade Fleury to the Avalanche for the rights to Patrick Roy. Roy has told many people that he wants to get back into the game for one final shot to win a Stanley Cup. However, Roy's agent is slowing the process down because he keeps saying, "My client can't hear you, he's got 2 Stanley Cup rings plugging his ears".

debrisslide said...

@mike - he played center in the OHL. I guess if the Pens are going to treat him as a winger, that's good.

Mike Georger said...

correction, the pens site does say center, but when you click on the article it goes to the trib and says winger.

"The Penguins selected right wing Nathan Moon with the 120th overall pick in the fourth round of the NHL Entry Draft at Scotiabank Place."

so yeah im guessing center then

jefe penguino said...

pens should trade malkin for pick 209.

and rob rossi wrote that article.

debrisslide said...

Anaheim just drafted a kid who is younger than I am. Whoa.

Mike Georger said...

thats why im guessing center

ive never noticed rossi has his phone number on there, thats ballsy. must be the trib operator number.

debrisslide said...

And the Pens draft Nicholas D'Agostino, whoever that is. Google search of his name turns up a family of grocery store owners.

Brett said...

Hey uh.. what happened to Brown, from Notre Dame??? We had rights to him, no?

debrisslide said...

@brett - He's still listed as one of the goaltending prospects on the Pens site. What about him?

Mike Georger said...

far as i know, he backed up curry in WBS once conklin came up.

put up a 2.34 GAA and a .913 save percentage

Brett said...

@debrisslide,

well we picked up 2 G from the draft this year, now obviously they're not NHL ready. but also, I don't keep tabs on the AHL or other farm leagues.. but by my estimation, we've got Fleury, Conks, Sabu potentially, then Brown, whoever the goalies were after conks came up, and now two more. That's a lot of goalies.

Flyer Hater said...

You know what this means?

Everyone here may be a bit perplexed by the Moon picking, but let me tell you it was solid. I live in Kingston, Ontario, and hold season tickets to the Frontenac's. Moon was one of the only good players on the worst team in the OHL, and I'm surprised he slipped all the way to the 4th round. The Penguins made an excellent pick.
