...But not for the Penguins.
What Would Gary Roberts Do?
Move on, apparently.
Rick Curran, who represents Roberts -- a veritable folk hero in his season-plus with the Penguins -- said yesterday that Roberts will continue playing, but not in Pittsburgh.
"He very much enjoyed his time there," Curran said. "But he understands that Ray [Shero, the Penguins' general manager] has a number of items on his agenda that would take priority."
Curran added that Roberts, 42, "most definitely" intends to continue his career and will decide where after reaching unrestricted free agency next Tuesday.
The Penguins acquired Roberts from Florida Feb. 27, 2007, for defenseman Noah Welch, and he endeared himself to fans almost immediately with his intensity and physical style of play.
He had seven goals and six assists in 19 games with the Penguins at the end of 2006-07, and three goals and 12 assists in 38 appearances in 2007-08. He missed more than half the season while recovering from a broken leg and high ankle sprain.
"He wants to have a good solid season [in 2008-09], injury-free," Curran said.
Roberts was paid $2.5 million the past season and, with the Penguins' salary-cap concerns, giving that kind of money to a fourth-liner who fills a fairly limited role simply isn't viable.
"He had a real good experience there, and he's glad that he came," Curran said. "But he's going to look for opportunities somewhere else."-- Dave Molinari Post-Gazette

this sucks
I can't wait to call him old next year, WOOOOOOOOO
(just trying to add levity to the situation)
This might be the worst off-season I have ever witnessed ... *curls up in a ball*
No, Gary, don't go ...
Noo. Its not fair.
i think it hurt more that the PG guy wrote as the tag line
"What would Gary Roberts do?
Move on apparently.."
that just hurt the most
that did hurt the most.....
earlier on the news i heard he was still going to play....but i didn't know for another team.
ugh. i'm drowning in gary's tears.
2.5M goes a long way, maybe he's doing the Pens a favour and taking one for the team.
You will be missed GR! Thanks for the memories.
wristbands+FHprank=jinxblog
If anyone thinks I'll stop wearing my WWGRD they have lost their mind.
Carroll, I agree. I should be facing some kind of c-blog suspension.
I can't believe he's leaving. He's been one of my favorite players since the first game I saw him play.
so much for the last shipment of wristbands??? lol
Sorry FH, the fact you also "broke the news" to cblog just made it that much worse.
Oh, and I can't upload the video. Apparently everything about today has to suck.
You know what happened, right? Kevin Lowe offered him $5 million and all the Flintstones chewables he could eat in a year.
this is fuckin weird
-we are alerted with the last sell of wristbands
-flyer hater jobs fedko with gary roberts prank
then ....
shot to the heart. gary is leaving.
The city of Pittsburgh should have a going away party for him.
I'm not sure it was you, Flyer Hater, but Fedko that caused the jinx after his comment. We need to job Fedko more ...
i dont want to believe in jinxblog
and i still wanted a darn wristband!
Fedko needs ripped apart.
I wasn't aware of the new post so here is the link again: Fedko Joke Zone Prank #2
yeah i;m with kasparitis
BLAME FEDKO
@ docciavelli - that's alot of extra money he can save on vitamins. That deal would be well worth it.
Or maybe he's going to Russia instead of Geno.
Fuck that. If he really cared, he'd beat the shit out of someone on the 2nd or 3d line, take their spot, and then not feel guilty about the 2.5 mill.
Really Roberts?? REEEAAALLLLYY??
http://youtube.com/watch?v=elBGHdvlYgk
More appropriate.
Steve In Denver, let's please not go down that road.
hopefully it's just a dream.....
right?
I've known you all my life
At least that's how it seems
Never known another way
Living out on a dreamNow I know you're leaving me and I'll never understand
Before I let you walk away, I have one last demand
Tell me a lie and say that you won't go
Look in my eyes and hold me even though
I realize you had to walk away
No more yesterday
You always were my angel
Flying high above
Always looking out for me
Angel that I love
But now my dreams are fadin like age-old photographs
That hurt too much to look at now, remind us of our past
Tell me a lie and say that you won't go
Look in my eyes and hold me even though
I realize you had to walk away
No more yesterday
Maybe we could stay together
Maybe it could last forever
Maybe if you just tell me a lie
Maybe then, we'll never say goodbye
I think it was the BGL interview that jinxed it. Blame Eaton and Whitney--they were probably pissed that GR jobbed them on TSN as the worst dressed and cheapest guys on the team.
Toronto is probably the destination. They just grabbed Mayers, and I bet they'd like an all "over-the-hill" line, probably centered by Doug Weight. Funny thing, Gary would be the only guy with legs on that line.
Jeez, on this note, I'm hitting the sack. How to sleep?
ck - stop!!!!! lol
What'd I do?
@sh0oez
i tried watching the prank
but just ended up crying!
=(
I can't even imagine having to watch the Pens play him. I hope he goes west so that can be minimized. I don't think I can bring myself to root against a Gary Roberts-led group.
The world is about to implode.
@ck
you posted lyrics that are making us all cry
ck - nothing...i'm just gonna get emotional.
Oh, FH, let's go down that road...

Ah yeah sorry, it's a sad song.
First Shawn Michaels, and now Gary Roberts.
I feel like I'm 9-years-old again.

Read this. Apparently Malkin is serious about the "hometown discount" that Hossa and Malone were just BS'ing about. And Gino's been here for only how long?
So while some of us may feel a bit betrayed tonight, remember that there are those who, even with limited English proficiency, really want to be in Pittsburgh. That says a lot about Gino.
In Shero We Trust.
This is what happens when a coach embarrasses a player like this in the playoffs.
I miss him already:-(

OMGGGGGG... I get home at midnight and the first thing i see is GARY'S LEAVING??? Let's hope the fuck he doesn't go to a crappy team... I think I'm going to curl into the fetal position and cry for a while...
DAMNDAMNDAMNDAMNDAMNSHITFUCKARSEBOOB
Someone said it earlier - nothing makes sense anymore.
This wristband is never coming off, ever.
yes, gary is not one of our first priorities.
but honestly...
the guy is 42....
he has a team who needs his presence on the ice....
he has a city that loves him...
he has his own bracelets....
he has his own saying.....
and he wants to leave to maybe get a better offer?
stunned
Everyone on here's being too over dramatic. Yes he's Gary Roberts, and it sucks that he's leaving but it's better for the team if he's not here next year. For a guy his age, to play the kind of role he would be playing here to make the kind of money he would demand just isn't feasible.
@Docciavelli: I have never heard Malone say he was going to take a discount, only heard people hoping he was.
Is the room supposed to be spinning ... no, Gary!
Penstone, 4th one down
It's been my ringtone for about 2 years, and it never can go bad.
Don't blame HCMT for this Thomas.
@Thomas: How did he embarass him?
At risk of giving everyone a seizure...what happens if he signs in Philly?
Now that your heart has exploded, realize that Philly's got cap issues, and they probably aren't looking for a 42-yr-old on a one-year deal (but see my earlier Toronto comments).
But this is the reality of modern pro sports. Long-term loyalty in the age of free agency is a fleeting thing. Hell, fans can all wear wristbands touting a player's decision-making ability as tantamount to Jesus'...and he'll still leave in likely his last professional season.
Look, we don't know if this is Gary's decision or whether he was told by Shero that he "wasn't a priority." I don't hold it against either of them. All I know is that I enjoyed Gary's time with the Pens. Now, he's on someone else's team, and when he comes to Pittsburgh or the Pens travel there, I hope he loses. Plain and simple.
I'll still like the guy though.
Thomo thinks that GR is leaving because HCMT didn't play him in Game 1 of the SCF.
Wake up people! Dont be such homers! I guess living far away gives Pens fans some vision, but man, if anyone is really upset that a guy who makes $2.5M/yr and only suits up for 1/3 of the season is going bye-bye, well come on! I think that money is better spent on players than in Chuck Norris one liners. Don't get me wrong, I love Roberts as much as the next guy, but pay a guy 15 years younger to be that guy. We all knew he was gone, we knew this was his last shot at the cup...didn't we? I guess we'll all be REAL pissed when Ryan Malone is *gasp* signed by Minnesota/Columbus/Vancouver/NYR and Hossa takes the money to play in Beantown or wherever. When are we ever going to learn and accept that this is a business...nothing more. Just b/c following it is a hobby of ours, doesn't make it any less of a living for players/agents. I hate it as much as the next guy, but lets be realistic. The Pens will live w/o Gary Roberts and his 23 points or whatever it was.
:( Damn these past couple days have been sucking ass
does anyone have the link to that Hossa ringtone...?
I just got a new phone and it wouldn't work on my old one...
here's to hoping I can keep it for a while after I finally get it.
He'll always be a Penguin in my heart.

I can only imagine the reaction of c-blog if it was around in 98 when Ronnie Franchise left as a Free Agent.
There would have been WWRFD wristbands for sure.
@kasparitis
Here's Malone's Agent Mike Liut:
"We don't know what the discount is," Liut said. "We do our homework and look at possibilities out there, see where opportunities are. But where you're playing and who you're playing with is important.
That sounds like a suggestion that he'd give *some* discount, but if you read the most recent Malone statements, he's already packed his bags and wants out.

i made a fiesta mexicana one on my own with phonezoo.. i can send you that link when i find it
Eileen, I'm surprised that the camera that took the picture with Ronnie and yourself didn't shatter because of the sheer awesomeness of Number 10.
for those people who went to bed, when they wake up in the morning, they are going to wish they never woke up.
I'm surprised I even got up the nerve to ask him for a picture in the first place.
haha yeah i was thinking that too..
what a horrid news to wake up to!
my parents freaked when i told them about carlin when they woke up..
i know my dad will flip when i tell him bout roberts in the AM
@Docciavelli: It really doesn't say he'd take it, though ... that seemed like his agent beating around the bush. I really hate his agent, though ... But Malone isn't gone yet. He isn't gone until I read/hear about it. We need to stop talking about that ...
I remember when Ronnie left ... sad day in Pens history ...
Knowing RF, I'm surprised he didn't ask to take the picture with you.
No lie, when I first loaded up the Gary story on the P-G, my browser crashed.

in the endless sea
all we do
crumbles to the ground
though we refuse to see
dust in the wind
all we are is dust in the wind
Now, don't hang on

j-prak.... i actually listened to that song today. shit!
Okay, seriously, I need sleep. So last cblog for me tonight.
We can all agree that next year the Pens will look a bit different than what we had during the playoffs this year. But even that team was different from the one we started with. Mark Recchi, Eric Christiansen, Colby Armstrong, Mark Eaton, gone. Enter Hossa, Dupuis, Gill. Change can be good.
This may hurt, but who knows? Maybe this was the only way to keep Ruutu for multiple years? And, bear in mind, Ruutu reads pensblog, where Gary wouldn't even admit where the bracelets came from when BGL put one in his face and asked about it.
I'm stunned, but I'll get over it by dreaming about where Shero spends the 2.5 mil. Markus Naslund, Kristian Huselius...wherefore are thou?
@FH
Thanks for the reminder on Liut. That made me remember this little banter from Stevens and Trotts at Brian Bellows that sounds like chirping from my old college team. (warning: Not Safe For Work)
So, does this mean Ruutu takes over for the Presidential campaign. With him possibly testing free agency too, what the hell is going to happen! We don't have a Speaker of the House!
@penstone
After we lost Game 6, I ran out and got some Ben & Jerry's.
Eaton isn't gone yet! JEEZ!

tomorow morning i will wake up to HOSSA HOSSA HOSSA
and it should be a great morning
but then I will remember Gary is gone
and it will not be a good day
Jesus f'ing mf'ing g-d s.o.b. The universe can cram a Coke and a pound of cotton candy up its ass.
First HOSSA! becomes HO$$A.
Then George Carlin dies.
And now Lord Gary leaves. I didn't know whether to expect him back but I'd hoped that whatever happened, he'd retire as a Penguin.
The Blackhawks have a young team in need of a veteran presence....if recent history is any guide, by tomorrow at noon he'll have been traded to there for Ben Eager.
I'm just waiting for bad news on Ruutu. It seems inevitable now.
time to cancel the wristbands :/
i'd kick the dog, but he's in bed
im even more atheist than before....
my lord and savior has turned his back on me.
just frees up some scratch to sign: this guy
Do It.
[Hossa] er....
[Avery]
@eileen
wow, so did i!
@allison
yeah, that it going to be the worst.. i have two alarms- one was hossa, one was GR drinking the water.. it will be quite depressing when my alarm goes off but im too sad to change it!
Bad news comes, don't you worry even when it lands.
Good news will work its way to all them plans.
We both got fired on exactly the same day.
Well we'll float on, good news is on the way.
I'm just waiting for bad news on Ruutu. It seems inevitable now.
Perhaps there is hope here, for Lord Gary's departure certainly (one would think anyway) leaves the cash to re-sign Ruutu. I'd had a suspicion before that he was on his way out.
I suppose if Hossa and Lord Gary's departure let us re-sign all or most of Malone, Free Candy, Ruutu, Adam Hall, and BGL, life will be well enough
Something for King Shero to think about in addition to Naslund, Stillman, Ryder or Straka.....up in Minnesota, Pavol Demitra and Brian Ralston are free agents. DO IT.
@Dr. Turk: Ha, I find it hilarious that he's in a closet ... the photgrapher has a great sense of humor! *laughs*
Ron Francis=most underrated passer the game has ever seen. Actually, he did everything well. Maybe we'll be blessed enough in the future to have another Ron Francis come our way. Who knows, we might already have one in Sid the Kid or Jordan Staal. What other teams can boast that?
Brian Rolston a Pen...would love to see that.
*photographer ... because I can't spell to save my soul now ...
This whole GR leaving thing may not be so bad after all. haha
Commit to the Ruu.
HAHA (I refuse to use "LOL") @ Dawson Leary
What a joke.
IHK...
don't forget to view the slideshow = PRICELESS.
I think he may have had some other 'surgery' besides that whole spleen fiasco....[and she's now in the best shape of his life!!!!]
C'mon King Shero.
Do. It.
Ron Franchi$e left for mo' money, mo' money, mo' money....
Wait...What?
[Avery]
This hurts my soul. Anywhere but Philly Gary.
[Avery]
You really are trying to drive me toward a menage a trois with a bathtub full of water and a toaster oven aren't you?
I definitely cannot commit to the Avery.
Avery would be killed by his own teammates here.
@Dr. Turk: Hahaha!! It's also funny because he's wearing a Rangers shirt. He disgusts me ... I think he got plastic surgery on his face after he tanned. I think he's asking for as much money as Malone, which is funny, because (a) Malone's team doesn't hate him, (b) Malone is more talented, and (c) because he's a worthless piece of shit ...
Him without a shirt *gag* + Writing for Vogue + More shoes than me and a lot of women + him in a closet + tans + wears Rangers shirt (had to add that one *laughs*) = Someone might be gay
WWRu2D?
My 2 favorite Gary Roberts moments, without a doubt! There are many of course, but these 2 jump out!
#2 GR calling on the whole Senators team at the end of Game 1 in the playoffs this year. And the Refs trying to get him off the ice.
and
#1 Gary Roberts beating Ben Eager ass. And then BGL sitting in the penalty box repeatedly telling Eager... The old man beat your ass!! The OLD MAN BEAT YOUR ASS!!
Life has no meaning.
Mike Liut is a dork who wore the ugliest goalie mask in the history of the world.
wow, i'm speechless on that slideshow. seriously, how many photos do you need of someone trying to tear a shirt off?
"I feel like my heart has been crapped out my butt"-to quote some movie I can't remember right now. DISTRAUGHT...
I have already made changes to the Jarkko Ruutu for Vice President Facebook group. It's a bit early, but fuck it. If they stick around, I think a Ruutu for President/FREE CANDY for Vice President campaign is in order.
@kj: I'm figuring he has been weakened by acting like a female writer for the summer, so he can no longer rip the shirt off like a regular human ... either that or he paid the photographer for the extra photos ...
wow. first malone, then hossa, now roberts?!? and possibly orpik too

July 1st will not come soon enough. This shit needs to end already.
I still want a wristband, everyone. I'm serious!
July 1st is taking forever. I really want some idea about what next season is going to be like. Drop the puck, dammit.
Free Candy is staying, mark my words.
ok... jagr on the 4th line.
I'll still boo, but only a little.
ihk- i was talking with my friend the other night about avery and would i want him on my team. i told him no, saying he's a liability and i questioned his mindset. now i can add that taking out his spleen apparently made him even weaker.
and i gotta admit i read some of his opinions on fashion the other day and lord, i could never deal with someone like that.

Goodnight cblog.
The only thing comforting me is that I am looking at a few pictures my friend sent of some Italian soccer players when they posed in Dolce & Gabbana (Pirlo, Gattuso, Cannavaro, Zambrotta, and Blasi.) BTW who sends that to someone after Italy loses? My friend has horrible timing and a weird ability to find pictures of men in little clothing ...
Good night, c-blog ... maybe we'll get some sleep tonight ...

I had a dream last night that Fedko coerced Roberts into signing with Philly. Can't remember how he did it though...
Farking hell.
Out of boredom and a need to amuse myself, I posed a bit of tribute to Gary Roberts on my blog. A couple of hours later, this Pensblog post just killed my Gary Roberts post. Oops.
problem with orpik for vp is that he may be gone, too
my heart hurts
A lot of happiness may have died within the past day, but hope is still alive. With all of this money freed up now, some people have to stay.
Please.
bad times
I hope he goes to a western conference team so we don't have to play him.
double j return?
i swear if they even call avery...
no.
im afraid to go to bed. im worried at this point im gonna wake up to a phone call from my folks telling me my dog died.
speaking of unfashionable, anyone seen on puck daddy the pic of parros & perry? not good looks for them

maybe gary roberts brings a lot of heart and leadership but his stats were shit and we need more out of a player getting 2.5 mil.

thesteelpen66: "if crosby was the heart of this team, GR was the fist"
quote of the cblog
Does anybody remember back whenever Hulk Hogan would get put into a sleeper hold and the referee would grab his wrist to test consciousness, and he would left it up and let it fall. The first time he would drop it his wrist was as limp as charlie's, falling quickly to the ground. The second time it's second verse same as the first. The third time, he drops Hulk's wrist it falls towards the mat and the inevitable KO, but then...right before it hits the ground it stops, suspended in time for just a moment as if it is Tom Cruise from Mission Impossible hanging just about the ground. Hulk's hand then begins to shake as if it were Michael J. Fox in an earthquake, and then just like that Hulk rises from certain doom to break free of his restraints and run wild on whatever jobber is in the ring with him.
-Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals The Hockey Gods snuck up behind the pens after the glory of game 5 and applied a rear naked choke to us. We fall to the mat.
-As our hand is lifted the first time Ho$$a and Bugsy inform the world that it's no dice 'til the 1st of july. Our hand slams once.
-As our hand is lifted a second time tPB is in the midst of a great summer day, (newsblog, BGL interviewing Gary, announcements of future WWGRD wristbands, and Fedko jobbings) George Carlin is taken from the world and Gary changed all the questions when we thought we knew the answers by hitting us with a Razor's Edge. Our hand slams twice.
-On July 1st our collective hand will be raised by the Hockey Gods one last time, I for one don't think it will touch the mat.
the one time i go out for some drinks in awhile, sorta, +/-160 oz of them, i come home to 3 new posts, several hundred comments, and gary roberts leaving?? WHAT THE FUCK.

WTF. Triple H is drafted to Smackdown, the stage falls on Vince, and now GARY ROBERTS WILL NOT RETURN?
I'm gonna have to get some razor blades from the Detroit emo kid. I just need to see if I can still feel pain. I'm so numb right now.
I second eileenover's suggestion about a farewell party for Gary... more concrete ideas?
Next season without Hossa, Malone, Orpik, Roberts and possibly Ruutu?
The core remains, but the heart is leaving.
Staff, time for Chicken Little.
I pray that you call me a joke in a couple of days.
Everyone on here's being too over dramatic. Yes he's Gary Roberts, and it sucks that he's leaving but it's better for the team if he's not here next year. For a guy his age, to play the kind of role he would be playing here to make the kind of money he would demand just isn't feasible.
I agree cs.
2.5 million!! If anyone else had these stats,
38games 3goals 12 assists 15 points 40PIM
Everyone would be screaming to not resign at $2.5, that he is injury prone, older, was scratched during the playoffs, etc, etc, etc.
Just my 2 cents.
Gary Roberts, You always showed grit and character, thanks for the time here.
Ugh.. this is the "Empire Strikes Back" part of the off season.
Lord Gary, why have you forsaken me?
This hurts my heart.
Well said jawsh.
I am definitely going to miss that steely gaze that Scary Gary has. One of my favorite memories is at the end of the Ottawa game (1 or 2??) where Steigy and Errey said to go back in your cage! That was awesome.
Thanks for a great run #10, and I hope that the Pensblog staff can still remain solid through this. :)
woah woah woah. Who said anything about ORPIK leaving? I don't want to hear that garbaaaaage. haha
We need Orpik--for the new VP. You know. RUTUU BETTER STAY.
And are we almost positive that Hossa is gone now? I mean...it's pretty ominous, but we're not ENTIRELY sure. But, I mean...UGH.
Today was a sad day.
I'm now an atheist :(.
Playing against Roberts and Hossa will suck. Really.
It's a tough shot (understatement), but I REALLY hope Hossa will stay.
The offseason makes me queasy.
BGL has a WWGRD wristband... Gary makes the joke that it was BGL that started it all... hmm... would that make BGL possibly the philanthropist who bankrolled the production of the first two batches???
As a pens fan and a gary roberts fan, I am doubly depressed by this news. I will always root for my home team. And yes, Gary Roberts was injured for a good chunk of the year, he was purely a stretch playoff player and he didn't disappoint, even playing hurt. Set the tone for the series against ottawa and perhaps for the entire playoffs. Stats do not totally determine the value of a player. I loved the original pickup of Roberts and how great of a leader he was. I even debated he should be the captain, but crosby proved to be it. If this is true, all I want to say is that Gary left us some great memories, great beatdowns, and a great cult hero. From his first hit on Danielle Briere in ot against buffalo to his last skate in the finals, he will always remain a hero in my mind.
