End of an Era.

For some reason, I have a sickening feeling in my stomach for how much I am going to hate Ryan Malone in the future.

@ Aron -

From previous post...yeah, for some reason I'm thinking a second and maybe a fourth or fifth. I'm basing this off the rumor that had Malone at one time going to Columbus for their second-round pick in the 2008 Draft. I'm throwing the fourth or fifth in there for Roberts.

That's what I'm kind of expecting. If it winds up better than that, bonus and aces to King Shero for getting something for two players that were gone anyway.

Thanks for the memories, Bugsy and Roberts. Say hi to Mike Alstott for me.

Wingbloggers -

Christine and I have to take Buddy the Wonder Pooch in for a vet visit at 2:45...which ironically, is just past the QS&L where we will commence Wingblog. Once we're done with that, we have to run him home and then we'll be on our way back out.

Depending on how long the vet visit runs (they're "squeezing us in for this appointment"), we might a little late getting to Wingblog. Just sayin'.

where is this from cause I can't find it anywhere.

Gary Roberts wont sign with them.....garuntee

Matthew J, said...

It's a conditional pick. Literally, it means we could get nothing. I would assume it is conditional based upon one or both signing.

Malone may actually sign.... He may want to play with stamkos on the second line

Long time lurker, first time poster:

The Lightning have pulled it, but TSN's site has it that the Penguins are getting a fourth rounder, that will become a third rounder if Malone signs.

Silky Smooth said...

Though Roberts portrays many leadership qualities, I don't see him making much of an impact in Tampa. When he came to the Pens two years ago, they were already on the brink. Meanwhile, in Tampa he has no future and is taking a roster spot and ice time away from a young rebuilding franchise. I don't understand this move as far as Tampa is concerned

well no surprise that they were actually going away, but it still stings

threshhold9k said...

TSN implies if Malone signs it'll turn into a third rounder. Doesn't mention what if Roberts signs, which he probably won't unless they overpay for him.
Bugsy will be missed but he is replacable and said replacement will be more affordable.

Good deal because we'd get nothing for them come July 1st.

Most of agents not signing with us is really just them wanting more money or their agent wanting more money. Which leads to a question, what good are agents? Oooo they take calls for you and leech off your success and fame; they also negotiate for you because you can't spare one f'ing hour of your time.

Sabrejets said...

I don't get it, yeah those guys were good, but Shero's gotta keep the big guns and have something left for the supporting cast. We'll get new blood and some good up and comers and be fine. No one says you have to hate those guys just because they play somewhere else...

Silky Smooth said...

Better Tampa than within the Atlantic.

Jasper said...

I'm glad it's tampa, always liked that team, well maybe only vinny and marty and now curious about stamkos and who knows

Agents should also have a grasp of the legal issues involved in a sports contract that athletes might not have. You can bet that every franchise has a team of lawyers on their side, so it's best to have one of your own going into negotiations if you're a player.

One of my roommates senior year of college went to law school with the goal of becoming a sports agent.

If only all agents were there just to be legal council to their respective player(s). But people like Golddigging Summer say one thing while Hossa says something else.

Is this really that surprising? They were both gone (for nothing) in three days anyway. At least now you have a third or fourth rounder to show for it.

You're going to get what should be a very solid prospect (in what is an extremely deep draft, from what I've heard) for two guys that had no intentions of signing here.

@ adam: some people were still holding out hope for bugsy and he said he was going to July 1st regardless and advised the BJ's against trading for his rights. as for Roberts we all knew he was going it was just a suprise to see his rights traded. i'm sure that once it sets it you'll see more happy yinzers.

Steve In Denver said...

I don't really see either signing in Tampa. Whatever. Every time I hear "bad" Pens news, I go back and read tsn just to reinforce that most teams are still buying out contracts and turning players loose, and nobody's really made any ground yet (other than Tampa locking up Lecav.). I'm trying to stay + that we'll get some nice surprises next week.

iirc malone didnt want to be traded for a player because it would hurt his new team. probably wouldnt have an issue with being traded for a pick i think.
still dont really see him signing with them but whatever, my only tenet about losing free agents is to not lose them to divisional teams

rickyaustin said...

I don't understand the Pens fans who are freaking out - acting surprised- this has been a long time coming... no secret.

Roberts announced he was leaving, and talks with Malone have long been over.

They have been on their way out for a while now. We got something for nothing.

This is a good trade for us, considering the circumstances.

We won't be like the Steelers this offseason, only losing people and not resigning anybody. We'll reload and be back. Our core is here. Don't freak out guys.

I Have Kasparaitis said...

@rickyaustin: If you came on c-blog more, you would probably notice that I write about Malone basically every post because he is beyond my favorite player. I dont' expect you to understand, but it hurts that the guy I have loved since he joined the team, the player that has been the void filled when Kaspar left (Mario holds his own spot as well as a few others), and the guy who has symoblized what I love about hockey no longer plays for my favorite team, my home team. I won't be able to watch him play considering I don't see any Lightning (or wherever he lands) games, and I won't be the one always there backing him whenever someone complains about him. I was one of the few people that gave Bugsy a chance when he was trade bait ... everyone was saying let him go, but I said wait, he has so much potential. And we have only started to uncover it this year, and he's gone.

Thanks, everyone for the hugs ... I have such a headache now ... today = worst day.

coffeytalk said...

no worries, ihk. I too am a huge huge HUGE Bugsy fan and am very sad that this is it. I knew it was coming but I still tried to think positively about and hope that maybe, just maybe it wouldn't happen. This offseason is going to be rough but that's the way it works...

hey yah never know, maybe some day he will return to pittsburgh? and if so, you and me will be there screamin' our faces off with joy.

TheNWChica said...

@ricky: Yes, we knew that Ryan was probably leaving, but that doesn't make it any easier to take when it's your favorite player. Mine retired a few weeks ago...I knew it was coming the last couple of seasons; but it didn't make me cry less when he announced it.

MetVet it is. Just got back. Buddy's doing well. He handles bloodwork a lot better than I do (outside of spiders bigger than the size of a quarter and excessive heights, there are few things I hate more than bloodwork needles).

He has a hyperactive thyroid condition and we needed to get his prescription refilled along with the blood tests to see where the med levels were in his bloodstream. $116 later, he's good to go. He's even lost five pounds since his last visit thanks to the medication, which is what we expected him to lose.

How weird must this be for Malone? I mean, he was born here in Pittsburgh and he was raised in the Penguins Organization. He wore his Dad's and Ronnie Francis jerseys while his brother wore Coffey. Sure, he left his last year of high school to go play in Shattucks and spent a lot of time in Minnesota, but he always came back. He got drafted by this team and his Dad didn't really want to draft him, though. He earned everything he got here, it wasn't handed to him ...

@ IHK -

Please don't ever feel you need to apologize for being a fan.

Part of being a fan means you get attached to certain players and unfortunately, the business end of sports sometimes steps in and ruins things for the "fan" part of us.

I was the same way when Ron Francis left the Pens. I remember being disappointed when Bob Boughner left in free agency after the 2000-01 season. And I had a hard time coming to terms with the Hossa deal at first - despite the fact that it allowed us to remake ourselves into a Cup contender - because Colby Armstrong was one of my absolute favorite Pens players.

When these guys go, I always try to rationalize the deals by looking at the business side of it, or seeing what else is out there that could allow us to improve on the spot vacated. It's a way to rationalize it, but it always still hurts to see a player you loved cheering for go elsewhere.

And I know down the road there will be other players for us to embrace just like many of us did with Bugsy and Gary Roberts (Caputi). But for now that won't do anything to lessen the sting of these guys leaving. All things being equal, most fans would want these guys to stick around.

But please don't feel like you need to explain yourself for being a fan.

Zarley Zalapski Blues Explosion said...

Oh well, they were gone anyways, at least we got something. This honestly isn't a big deal. It's actually stupid on the part of Tampa, as they would've gotten to negotiate with each team for free in 3 days.

The paper down here ran a story after they hired Melrose calling this place "Hockeytown South". Yeah, Tampa is renowned the world over for being a great hockey town ::snicker snicker::

BTW, this would be a good time for me to revisit the "Tampa Bay North" topic of a few days back.

Here's another reason why we're not TB North: Sid and Geno, neither of whom are in their primes, are both better players than St. Louis and Lecavalier, both of whom are either in their prime (Vinny) or just past it (Marty).

Also, St. Louis and LeChevycavalier both play on the same line. Sid and Geno can both center their own lines.

Two solid scoring lines > one solid scoring line.

So there's a few more reasons besides the fact that we're not letting our minor league system dry up and that we're just smarter than them.

There is one comparison to Tampa Bay I wouldn't mind though, and that's a Stanley Cup (well at least a recent one).

And finally, am I the Tampa Bay on that map you guys posted?

threshhold9k said...

Opinions are a two way street Kaspar. Just because someone thinks Malone is overrated and is glad their gone doesnt mean they need to leave cblog because you disagree with them. Calling someone a ''Fucking asshole'' and then telling them to leave is why cblog is starting to go down hill. Did you pull that one right out of Flyer Hater's moldel of behaviour?

If person A disagrees with you call them a. A joke b. personally insult them c. Tell them to go else where.
Then play it off as if the jobbing were in jest.

Malone will be missed but damn life goes on.

Raybin said...

Lots to talk about when you guys are running Wingblog later. Someone eat a bunch of those Arizona Ranch wings for me. Toooooo good.

What did I come here to talk about? Oh yeah, Malone and Roberts.

First, godspeed and good luck to both of them. I hope they both do sign in Tampa. Tampa has a bright future with some owners who are seriously committed to the process. Plus, it'll put them on a team I don't hate and can even wish well except when their paths cross with the Pens on ice. If they end up with Philly or New York or Ottawa or even Boston or Toronto...man, that would be shitty.

Anyway, kudos to Shero. They were leaving regardless and now we at least have something other than memories.

Who knows, that third or fourth rounder could be the next Henrik Zetterberg-like steal.

Bugsy, your grit and personality were phenomenal and I loved you for them.

Plus you were seriously fucking clutch my friend. My greatest memory of live hockey is and will likely always be his wraparound goal with a minute left in Game 2 against Ottawa.

And Lord Gary? Let me salute you one more time. You are everything a leader should be. At the risk of being way oversentimental, I think whatever the young players like Crosby or Fleury or Kennedy or Staal accomplish in the future will be in some tiny way his accomplishments as well for being a mentor like no other during a critical period of their development as players.

When Fleury hoists his first Cup, I will think of that picture of Roberts comforting him on the bench at the end of Game 6.

WWGRD is a state of mind. Let's always keep that in the Pens locker room and here in CBlog.

I Have Kasparaitis said...

@threshhold9k: Sorry I used that language but I got offended and got pissed ... it obviously didn't affect him that much ...

How did he put himself before the Pens? Because he wanted money ... I bet you thought the same thing for Hossa. Why do you begrudge him after Shero obviously turned his back to him for Hossa? Offering him slightly more than his current contract after having his break-out season means they didn't want him.

"dreams do come true. I've always hated Malone and always will. OVER.RATED." In my mind those are fighting words and that insulted me

Stoosh said...

Agents are responsible for a hell of a lot more than contract negotiations. I interned for a year with a local attorney who was a licensed NFL player agent and maintained a small client list; it's an unbelievably dizzying amount of work. You handle not just contract negotiations (which is a monster in and of itself), but also financial planning, retirement planning, insurance matters, public relations, media relations, community relations, dealings with the players' union, etc. And that's before you get to dealing with any legal troubles your client might get himself into.

Oh,...and that's before you get to the marketing/endorsement stuff either.

These guys earn their 4%, trust me.

Raybin said...

@zarley

as they would've gotten to negotiate with each team for free in 3 days.

Doesn't this guarantee that they get first crack at them, though, without having to give up too much? They probably really want Malone. Curious to see Gary's fate will be.

Also, St. Louis and LeChevycavalier both play on the same line. Sid and Geno can both center their own lines.

This is the most obvious and salient point and yet no one in the media ever seem to want to make it.

@stoosh agentblog:

It just seems that there are agents out their who give the whole a bad rapsheet because they push players to earn higher salaries. This in turn forces teams to overpay and drive market value beyond their actual worth. This is why Pretty Pretty Princess made 10 mil last season in Philly ( I wouldn't blame the agent in this case but I think the example has some merit).

We went through the same thing when Armstrong got traded - another player who had just as many detractors as he had diehard fans.

If you don't like the guy, fine. But before you post something on c-blog about how you hated said player and are glad that he's gone, keep in mind that there are plenty of fans who counted that player among their favorites and right now some of those fans are hurting a bit because their favorite player is no longer here.

And keep in mind that some of those fans don't want to be told how ridiculous some other fans think it is that they're getting upset about Malone and Roberts leaving.

Fans get emotional. What's more...we're allowed to get emotional.

So whether you agree or not, if you go out of your way to post comments that attack the player who just left, keep in mind that fans of that player may perceive the comments to be the equivalent of kicking someone when they're down.

Shero didn't turn his back on Malone for Hossa - Shero refused to overpay for Malone, which teams are doing if the market is as rumored $5 million a year.

If Shero gives Malone $5 mill/year he'd be an idiot. He is paying 2.5million a year for Sykora who had 12 more points than Malone's career year.

A career year of 51 points isn't worth $5 million, or even $4 million - even if he did grow up here. We can sign any $3 million forward and he'll have 51 points on a line with Malkin and Sykora.

Shero stuck to his guns, didn't overpay just because Malone was a tough son of a bitch on national television.

I love Malone. Wish him the best. He isn't worth the money they were asking. If Shero overpays for him, then he better give Sykora $5.5 million too. Then Gonch deserves a raise... etc.

In Shero we trust.

I Have Kasparaitis said...

@rickyaustin: That's what other teams were offering, the Pens didn't offer him much more than his current salary. I think Bugsy would have taken something around $3.5 - 4 mil if it was offered, but I don't know that for sure; I don't talk to his agent or Shero. But come on, Shero did look for other people. Don't get me wrong, I think Shero's amazing and I'm happy with his decisions. If I was in his position, I would of gone for Hossa.

No need to be upset. Malone had a career year I doubt he will match 08's numbers, if he does good for him.

Roberts, we knew he was gonzo, best of luck to him if he signs or wherever he goes for that matter.

Better these guys end up in TB then in New York.

@flyer hater

people get really attached to their favorite players and identify with them. Funny what it will do. My Mom of all people became a rabid Pens fan during the glory years of Mario and Jagr. She HATED Kasparaitis for the way he'd hit Mario; and when the Pens got him that guy was her favorite!

I like all the guys on this team, but with limited monies and everyone wanting what they feel they deserve, some will be gone. I thought Talbot was the greatest player in the world when he pulled our chestnuts out of the fire, same with Sykora, you could go on and on...

Read on that TSN site that Jagr got a big offer from Russia. Wonder if the Russian mafia will extort all his money and threaten him if he goes over there?

I have no problem with this trade as I have already come to terms to losing both players.

I would definately prefer both of them go to the Western Conference.

No, actually from what I know they are Western Pa. and their image is Cars/nostalgia kind of a take off on Quaker State Oil and gas stations. When I lived in Youngstown, OH. They had one in Sharon PA. Now they have one in Columbus Ohio and even here in Dayton, but that is as far West as far as I can tell. Don't know about Eastern PA or New York State, but wouldn't be surprised if they weren't at least in Western New York...

yeah theres none of that wings place in Chicago. I can tell you if you want really good wings go to Buffalo Wild Wings. I have a feeling Tuesday gonna be the most hectic, busy day of the year. Expect nonstop action from shero, but he must have something planned.

If anyone cares they've signed most of the baby-pens like filewich and all, so the pens should have fine options to fill inthe gaps.

First time poster here, but have followed discussion on this site for days.
does anyone really know what's going on with the Malone and Orpick contracts? the reason they are going to free agency is no the money. they would have taken the contract offered by Shero if he offered a no-trade clause. their leaving has to do with the NTC, not the money difference as everyone supposes. They would take a slight market discount with a NTC. Shero won't offer one to players who want more than a 2-year deal. He doesn't want his hands tied in the future, and the players don't want to take a slight discount that may make them more desirable on the trade market later. Malone would have signed long ago for $3 mil with a NTC. There is no negotiation here at all, that's why they're all heading to free agency. It will make it difficult for the Pens to sign multi-year contracts with any vets (those players old enough to ask for a NTC) in the future. that's why Shero's seeking all 1 and 2-year deals

Carroll said...

@penstone - sorry to hear about your grandpa. My thought are with you and your family.

@ihk- when I heard the news earlier today, my thoughts were of you. Sending hugs to you. Maybe you should have gone away to camp this weekend (/jk). Hope you are okay.

Hoping Shero can pull something amazing off over the next few days. Why does FA day have to be on a National holiday where I will not have access to any info. Or maybe that's a good thing....
