When A Ranger Calls

[Dylan and Kevin]

We seriously hope everyone hasn't been bouncing off the walls
in the wake of the Game 4 loss to the Rangers.

None of us expected the Pens to take this series in 4 games, let alone 5.

[ WhoWins.com ]

35 times out of 100, a team in the Rangers' position will win that game.
99.1 times out of 100, a team in the Rangers' position goes on to lose the series.

No one wants any part of a Game six in NYC.

***********************************************

Marc-Andre Fleury has been stopping a lot of pucks in this series.
But no Ranger fan has connected him to the Bettman/officiating/NBC conspiracy that involves getting the Pens deep into the playoffs.

Rangers fans conveniently omit that fact every time they whine. And it's sad.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Rangers fans want Malkin suspended for sweeping legs at the end of Game 4.

According to [ this article ] from the Toronto Sun, it ain't happening.

Malkin was slapped with a 10-minute misconduct with just 14 seconds remaining in regulation, while Mara received the same, plus a two-minute roughing minor.
The NHL said last night that Malkin would not be suspended.

No injury. Just like there was no injury to Crosby when he was slashed by what's-his-name.
Move along.

And as [ Blueshirt Bulletin ] relayed,
the Rangers didn't even send the video to the NHL anyway.

Speaking of linking to Blueshirt Bulletin,
a couple days ago, if you clicked their link here, you got sent to a Billy Ocean YouTube.

And on Friday afternoon, if you Googled "Blueshirt Bulletin," these results came up:

Click the Bulletin link above and see if we can get Billy higher than that.

"Smizik writes a bad column", that's like saying "Ryan Whitney is soff", does it really need to be pointed out?

There are striking similarites between the 75 series loss against the Islanders and this series.

*Both teams were from New York

*Both teams won game 4

*Both teams score more goals than the Pens in game 4

*Both teams had their goalies stop the puck more than our goalie in game 4

*Chico Resch is the backup for the NY Rangers

*Both teams played on ice with 3 lines on them

*Both teams used black pucks

From Empty Netters, a reader's email contribution worth reading:

One reader pointed out there more to Ty Conklin's contribution to this season than initially thought:

"I know the regular season is done and gone, but since we hopefully won't see him these playoffs, I just wanted to give a little more appreciation to Ty Conklin. Yes, the Penguins (and fans) owe him our berth in these playoffs, but he also owns a new spot in the Penguins record book - and I can't quite believe I'm the only one who noticed.

The Penguins' media guide doesn't give much love to save percentages; I don't know why. Maybe it's because they've been keeping them for less than 25 years? The media guide says that the best single-season save percentage by a Penguins goalie (with a minimum 30 games) is Jean-Sebastien Aubin of all people. He had a save percentage of .914 in 1999-2000.

The media guide is wrong. I don't know how this got ignored (or maybe it was deliberate?), but Tom Barrasso put up .922 in 1997-98. Granted, the old No. 35 did that over 63 games, but I'm pretty sure the Penguins were playing the trap that year.)

In any case, Conks broke that. He finished second overall in the NHL (damn you, Nashville's Dan Ellis!!!), but as far as the Penguin records are concerned, he's the new No. 1. Until Fleury takes that over next year. (*grin*) But even so, he had a pretty good season save percentage-wise in the overall scheme of things. Please see No. 30, 40, and 50.

Maybe it's not that important; maybe it's nothing compared to getting to be 'the guy' when 16 wins are on the line. Maybe we won't see him past July 1. But even if he's done his best work here already, he's left his mark. I wanted more people to know.

Very well played!

Speaking for myself, my wife and a lot of her girlfriends in our circle of friends are huge hockey fans, and I see the looks they occassionally get - especially from people outside our group - when discussion among the ladies turns to the attractiveness of the players. It bothers me, so I can imagine.

As they've said (especially when they get one of those looks)...we're all fans of a team full of young, charismatic, good-looking guys. Wouldn't it be expected for the ladies to talk about stuff like that?

Again, just speaking for myself, but the Ladies of C-blog are a very big part of what makes this place the epitomy of sheer awesomeness. C-blog would have a lot less character otherwise.

Like I said, this is all just my opinion and maybe I have no place chiming in on it. Please don't take this for anything other than that (and I'm especially not trying to suggest that you need anyone's approval to talk about whatever you want here).

April 23, 1997

A date everyone will remember for this goal.

It was thought at the time to be Lemieux's last ever game in Pittsburgh. Pens were down 3-games-to-none heading into that game, so it was the greatest of longshots for them to keep going. I remember that game like it was yesterday; it was the game that cemented me firmly as a diehard Pens fan.

If anyone else remembers, making the inevitable end of that series even worse were the concerns about the future of the franchise without Lemeiux. The only thing we knew for certain was that the torch was being passed to Jagr. But there was a very real sense of uncertainty about how the city would respond to the team without Lemieux, and that was the first time I ever really remember hearing the words "Portland Penguins".

That was also the last time I attended a Pens playoff game.

It took eleven years, but tomorrow it all comes full circle. First row of F1 tomorrow, you'll find me. A little more than a decade ago, I got to see the torch get passed from Lemieux to Jagr. God willing, tomorrow, I might be watching the end of the career of another Hall of Famer, and one of my very favorite Penguins.

Holy hell! I have to channel my inner Red here...I find I'm so excited I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head.

Might there be C-blog tailgating?

Wow, I am actually surprised at how many cbloggers are women. I have always hated the term "puckbunny" because I went to a high school where hockey was HUGE and all of the slutty girls would date (or just do) the hockey players. It was such a big thing to get to wear one of their jerseys, which basically meant you were doing it with them.

Anyway, I have always just LOVED hockey... the game. I loved it when I was a little girl, wanted to play but Dad said "you'll get hurt". I think if you grow up around people who love hockey, it becomes part of your personality, just like certain music does.

There are hot men everywhere, and I guess what makes hockey players attractive to most hockey fans who are women is the fact that they are in excellent shape, are tough, and have a big stick. (symbolismblog)

It's just a bonus that the game is the best around as well. Sorry, but watching football or soccer just isn't as exciting as hockey. Hockey is a better sport, hands down. If soccer were more exciting, I'm sure I'd feel the same way about David Beckham.

Plus, I don't know how many women on cblog would actually go looking for a hockey player to date, that just seems kind of transparent and desperate to me. Women who get on cblog are the ones who actually like the game. If we were just in it to get a piece, we'd go on that talksports forum where all the other puck bunnies go.

I've played goal for a very long time (not anywhere close to a professional level, obviously) and it's just the attitude you must have in net. You're all alone out there, you have to count on yourself at all times, and you can never get rattled. You must show supreme self-confidence at all times, sometimes the best just can't turn it on and off.

So, Lis, it's okay, I'm not mad at you and I won't make you feel uncomfortable if you want to talk on c-blog.

It's not a discomfort thing. She took a term used to describe no-brain hockey retard chicks and applied it to a lot of people that, with good reason, took offense to it.

The way I see it, she should be glad people are as civil as they are about it. The last person to call me a puck bunny got punched in the face.

Yeah having a 3-1 lead going back home is called facing adversity now?

Vanessa Day said...

@ Flyer Hater

I didn't mean that he's egotistical because he is an asshole. I meant that (it seems) he thinks he's better than any other goalie, so that's why he throws the puck out with two feet and opponents sticks all around. It just seems like the kind of clearing moves he does don't really mesh with being a smart goalie.

I understand the mindset you must be in to dominate, but you don't have to do stupid stuff just because you are overconfident. I thought it was good that Guy pulled him (my favorite French name, btw) and put in the other guy. Must have been humbling.

Who knows... I've never been in the net, so who am I to say he's overconfident, maybe he's just doing what he knows. From what I've seen though, MAF or Conks wouldn't try stuff like that. I just go by the (playoff) numbers. Price has a .907 and MAF owns a .940.

@Seeker: Nice articles ... It'd be awesome if PA was considered the Hockey State. Also, I don't get all the whining about the Malkin penalty shot. It was obviously a penalty, get over it, and he missed it. They won the game, why are they complaining so much? Also, the NY Post must not watch hockey ever. Just because Sid is who he is doesn't mean anything. The refs are not calling stuff for the Pens. Larry Brooks must be doing the drugs he got on the same corner Avery got his hooker, or all the urine smells are getting to his head. What a joke.

It's not just the whining about Malkin getting a penalty shot, but also many Pens fans saying that goal should have counted.

While I understand the ruling as to why they say it shouldn't count, I still maintain that the puck crossed over the goal line at the exact instant that Malkin made contact with Lundqvist. So in my opinion (from freeze-framing the game DVD I made) Malkin didn't push the goalie and the puck into the net. It was alraedy over the line by the time contact was made.

Not whining here as it's history now and makes no difference at this point..I'm just sayin'.

@fakedannystag: Actually I'm from Pittsburgh, I just like country music. It does seem weird that he would have country music artists on his helmet. I think it's kinda stupid.

@Seeker: I was just commenting about how people (Rangers people)think he shouldn't even of had the penalty shot or let him have the goal (which is obviously dumb.) I agree with you totally on your point, I was just commenting about how other people are saying stupid stuff about it.

Otherseriesblog: I'd prefer Montreal. It seems like some people here "love to hate" the Flyers, but for me, notsomuch. When I hate something I can't find any enjoyment in it, so I'd rather just keep as far away from it as possible. Eight Flyer games this season was already too much for me; I have no need for upwards of seven more. I don't want to see their stupid, ugly faces any more.

Besides, the name "Kostitsyn" never gets old.

FakeDannyStag said...

@ihavekasparitis

yeah, i hear ya. Price's Brokeback Mountain mask isn't very threatening. he should have a mask with Trixter, Tesla, and Warrant painted on it. his save percentage would be .500 wearing that. so you're a metrosexual that listens to country? just kidding. i lived there long enough to know some yinzers love songs about trucks, booze, dogs, women, and the flag.

speaking of masks. did anyone notice MAF wearing his back up mask at the end of game 3? looked pretty sweet.

Playing the Philthy Cryers 8 times actually helps the Pens....we know that team that much better and how to DESTROY them.

They can't hang with us without getting into penalty trouble....of course the Habs wouldn't be able to either, so I don't care which team we face.

GO PENS!

Stoosh said...

Watching most of the Philly-Montreal series, at first I was hoping for Montreal. Two reasons:

1. I've always kind of liked the Habs.

2. I think the Pens could push them around. Philly has been quick and physical with the Habs; the Pens can play the same way but be much sharper than the Flyers.

But I got to talking with my buddy (who posts here as Gaylord Focker) and started talking about the raw energy a Philly-Pens series would bring, and it convinced me that I want to see Philly.

The first two games would be here and we'd have a good chance to head to Philly up two games to none. The Caps gave Philly a hard time with their style of play, and the Pens play a more well-rounded and complete game than the Caps.

That would be an absolutely epic series.

Tonight's game? I want the Habs to win simply so that series can go as long as possible.

I don't care who we play next... beating the Rags tomorrow is 1st priority (obviously). Plus, booing the Flyers just comes naturally.

Do the Philadelphia fans realize that, because of the media glorifying their "rude" ways for years now, that they've actually become a caricature of themselves?

I mean, I'm not sure if the people in the video are acting like idiots because they're really like that, or just because they feel that it's what's expected of them as a sports fan in Philadelphia.

I'm showing up WAY late to the puckbunny party. That said, I read the conversation yesterday, but forgot to make my comment before this post went up. I had a roommate in college who was a total male puckbunny. He used to stand outside the coyotes exit door to taalk to the boys. Well, he finally made a friend out of a hockey player (If you want to call a 4th line guy on the 02-03 Coyotes a player), in Daren Quint. Dude hung out at our house so much I became very adept at telling his wife that he wasn't there.

That's my story... it's lame, and it's pointless, but I did get to call my old roommate a buckbunny, so it makes me feel better.

You know, for all the crap Pens fans get from Flyers fans about Penguins players - specifically Sid - flopping on the ice/embellishing stuff, is there a worse player at this than Hartnell?

Not only does he do it every time he takes what he evidently perceives is a hit that borders the rules, but he's probably the least convincing person in the world at. I'm built like Drew Carey and I'd look more coordinated taking a flop than he does.

I can't watch Hartnell now without thinking of Bellows getting the Artie/Trottier treatment.

M. Vanderlasser, if it helps, contestant #15 was quoted as saying "Back that thang up." ;)

Playing Philly really highlights, among other things, just how classically beautiful those Habs jerseys really are. It's the jersey equivalent of Jackie O standing next to Heidi from "The Hills."

Sooska said...

Stoosh said...

@ xocharmedchildox -

My favorite subject...

1. Throwing the "Losers Since '75" always works, especially to respond to general "Pens suck" comments from him.

2. How long ago was Philly's last Cup? The last time a Philadelphia team skated around the ice with a Cup, Mario Lemieux was nine years old.

3. I always like pointing out to Flyers fans that when the Pens actually make it to the actual Stanley Cup Finals (the final round), they know how to seal the deal (we've been there twice and we've won twice).

The last time the Flyers made it to the actual Cup Finals was the 1996-97 season. Once they got there, they did the best "deer in the headlights of an oncoming 18-wheeler" I've ever seen a hockey team do. They were swept by Detroit and were outscored 16-6. They never scored more than 2 goals in any game.

4. The Eric Lindros/Legion of Doom era, which should've been characterized by dominance but instead proved that you shouldn't try playing hockey in the playoffs with both hands wrapped around your throat.

5. While we're on that subject - Eric Lindros.

6. John Stevens looks like someone who should be having a sitdown with Chris Hanson from "Dateline".

eileenover said...

It's the jersey equivalent of Jackie O standing next to Heidi from "The Hills."

That comparison is perfection.

TheNWChica said...

Man... I love how polite hockey boys are when they talk to them.

Pensgirl said...

Thanks Eileen! It was easy, considering how much the Flyers' extreme douchebaggery reminds me of Spencer.

For anyone who has a Mac, there's a dashboard widget called "cheesesteak of suffering" - it's a count-up clock detailing how long it's been since the last time any of Philly's teams won a championship (9112 days, 19 hours, 59 min, and 35 sec as of this typing). They've got the longest drought of any city with a team in all four major sports. I throw it on my dashboard whenever I'm really feeling the schadenfreude (and yes, it's up there now).

xocharmedchildox said...

FH I just laughed out loud at that one. Its being printed out as i type...

Stoosh said...

@ - xocharmedchildox -

Some of those might be more suited for an argument than one-line verbal jabs...the one about the Flyers' chokejob in the '97 Cup Finals for instance. You kind of have to set that one up.

But if the kid is any type of real Flyers fan, he should know...

1. how bad they used to choke in the playoffs in the 1990s and earlier part of this decade,

2. about the Legion of Doom line.

3. how underwhelming the Lindros era was.

If he doesn't know about any of that, he's an even bigger joke than simply being a Flyers fan would normally suggest.

Stoosh said...

There are few things funnier than the Lindros Team Photo photoshop.

As for the Pens do we really have to be put thru that bullshit thru a possible 7 games?

eileenover said...

@racheleyos

HCMT just needs to send out Gonchar. I'll never forget that game when Gonch nailed him with a check, then when Hartnell goes after him he gets the butt-end of a stick in his face.

Pensgirl said...

Sooska, the Canucks didn't keep him because he took a page from Lindros and held out. They ended up trading him to the Rangers, who refused to sign him. He voluntarily chose to sign with Philly.

TheNWChica said...

Hossa Jr. has a goal and an assist against the Norwegians. Hopefully his brother can be so lucky tomorrow.

Flyer Hater said...

Flyers are a fraud, I don't care what anybody says.

They had to scrap and claw to beat a Washington team that only beat Florida and Tampa Bay down the stretch.

Montreal was going to be bounced sooner or later. Price has sucked in the playoffs, their D is not that good and their forwards are softer than Danny Briere when he's on his period.

The Flyers have a ton of holes. Their lack of mobility if we played them would absolutely kill them in a 7 game series against us. Could you imagine the pairing of Randy Jones and Derian Hatcher try to get the puck out of their own zone against the Malkin line? We've had Biron's number all year and he'll come back to Earth. They have nice scoring depth but we have great scoring depth. If we would stay out of the penalty box against Filthy, the series goes no longer than 5.

Sooska said...

Sarge strikes me as a player who has always prided himself on being skilled and not needing to be feisty. Now nearing the end of his career rather than the beginning he has seen and heard enough from these bullshit hacks who are trying to prevent him from winning a Cup.

I swear the Canadiens defense didn't realize they were playing. Oh my goodness, they aren't even trying to stop people from scoring. Sarge wouldn't have let them get anywhere near scoring.

Sarge has been a beast lately. He'd tired of people pulling stuff, so he won't take it any longer.

The 2 reasons I'm rooting for the Habs: 1. I hate the Flyers with an unadulterated passion and 2. Kovi is still amazing.
