Devastation City. PENS LOSE.

[2.<span class=[1.<span class=

[NHL.com recap]

Years from now the Penguins will lose a tough game , and someone will say that the loss hurt worse than Game four of the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals.

And they still won't be right.

These are the type of losses that stay with you, and haunt you.
Shades of Jiri Hudler could be a phrase you hear when you blow a huge meeting a work.

Did Wings really win, or did the Penguins lose it?

It doesn't matter.

All that matters is that the Red Wings got it done, and Lord Stanley will be in attendance on Monday evening.

We're not going to lie, the situation is dire.
The chances of winning 3 straight games against the Red Wings are about as close to not possible as it gets.

But there will be no concession.

You can throw Malkin under the bus.
You can make posts about Ty Conklin starting in net on Monday.

The last eight months would mean nothing to us if we did that.

Monday is a nation of Pens fans, against the world.

The ship is sinking, but we are going down to the bitter end.

God, help us all.

:::::::::::::::::: FIRST PERIOD :::::::::::::::::::

NBC got their wish with an early icing call.
They get more time to throw more graphics at your balls.

Early on, you couldn't feel the urgency that was prevalent for all of Game 3.
The Red Wings were getting chances like it was their job.

Dallas Drake, the wily vet, makes a horrible play and cross-checks Whitney.
Pens jump onto the PP.

After surviving a scare with Zetterberg lurking, the Pens got it done.
Hossa and Roberts cause trouble in front, Hossa fakes a wrap around and keeps it shortside.

1-0.

Stunned

[ 5031 ]

Hossa almost made it 2-0 right after, but he hit the crossbar. The goal could have changed your life.
That Game 3 urgency. It was there.

Everything was going well. And then Bing's stick broke in his hand, and he couldn't get the puck out of the zone.

Dupuis hits Cleary from behind.
The Wings jump onto the power play.

Orpik got crosschecked from behind early on the PK.
But it was apparently legal.

The PK was a thing of beauty.
But the boom came right after Dupuis got out of the box.
Lidstrom with the slapper.
1-1
Just a huge goal.

After some jobbing, Adam Hall draws a penalty.
The Pens couldn't get it done.

In the second half of the first period, it was 1-1, and it really didn't matter who scored the first goal.

Jordan Staal drew another penalty on the Wings.
The Wings just couldn't keep up.

That PP went to the wayside.
As that shift continued, Talbot gets crosschecked and goes off for diving.
Okay.

Franzen and Candy went off at the end of the next shift.
Great 4-on-4 action ensued.

And that was it.
A solid first period.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

[ KOZ ]
:::::::::::::::::: SECOND PERIOD :::::::::::::::::::

The second period started after what seemed to be the longest intermission of the season.

Staal interferes with someone.
It was a Red Wing, so it was a power play.
The Pens kill it. Just a huge kill.

What followed was some more unbelievable hockey.
The Wings sustained some decent pressure, but couldn't get a shot off.

Hossa led the charge the other way, but Osgood was there to make the stops.
We were now getting to the point of the game where the next goal would win it.

The game came back from commercial, but the tempo stayed the same.
Then another commercial, then still a feverish tempo.

After more great work from the third and fourth lines, the Pens draw a penalty.

And it was here, that season may have started to unravel. The powerplay that has been so clutch, just could not get set up. And frustration began to set in. Roberts tried to fight some joke as the period ended, but the joke was scared.

Weird feeling going into the third.

:::::::::::::::::: THIRD PERIOD :::::::::::::::::::

After the second longest intermission of the season, the third period started.

Something just wasn't right. It is like a scene in a movie, where you know something really bad is about to happen.

Two minutes in, that scene happens.
The Pens couldn't get the puck out, Jiri Hudler backhands it home and into your nightmares.

2-1

If you had to give up a goal in the third, the earlier, the better. Whatev.
Just a crushing goal.

The snowball had its chance to roll at Mach 10 when Fleury knocks it out of play.
The Pens killed it.

As the Red Wing begin to put their choke hold on, someone jobs a Dupuis.
As the Pens break into the zone during that powerplay, Bing gets interfered with.

This was the season, everyone knew it.
The Pens got some big chances.
Zetterberg makes an unreal play on Crosby to prevent him from scoring, by tying his stick up.
[David Staples] from the Edmonton Journal says it was a classic case of obstruction.

After some more unreal chances, a heartbreaking flicker of a goal light, it was over.

The 5-on-3 should have its own blog.
Should HCMT called a timeout before to set things up?
Should Malkin be taken off the point and put back where he belongs on the wing?
Should Roberts have been on the ice?

Father Time grudgingly walks down Center Avenue.

After the final commercial break, this was it.

The Pens took it to the Wings, as if you expected anything different.
Hall-Staal-Talbot work down deep just to get a chance. But no dice.

Time just ticked away.
The Pens got MAF off, but it wasn't meant to be.

  • Vomit

  • Shooting a broken stick at a player is grounds for a penalty shot--- just saying
  • Is the Western Conference the Old NHL?

Fellow Penguin Compatriots....

Perhaps no one, over the course of this season-- not even Ryan Whitney -- has faced more scrutiny, and been dismissed as much, as the ‘Kick The Tires And Light The Fires’ gameday picture. Used during the regular season, it rarely came through, leaving is to be comforted by the cold, cruel hands of defeat.

We have nothing to lose.

One more defeat and everything we know and love is over.

Why not, with our backs and our balls against the wall, look for one more spark, nay, one more chance.. for redemption?

I hereby issue a petition.. to use the 'Kick The Tires And Light The Fires' picture to send us off into battle on Monday. Why not give Losertown a look that they haven't yet seen? ..Though it's regular season record is spotty, it is untested in the playoffs... a clean slate.

It knows the system. It's been wanting, hungering, for a chance at redemption ever since we sent it down to the minors. Nothing has seemed to be able to penetrate Losertown's defense. Hacksaw has nothing left in the tank.

It's time.

SOMEONE FIND ME A PICTURE OF CLEARY SHOOTING THE STICK AT CROSBY PLEASE! Take a screenshot of the game if you recorded it or something!? Ugh! I can't find one or even a video of it to save my life!

Cbloggers unite for Game 5 at Mellon? Possible tailgateblog beforehand? Discuss!

sh0ez said...

And since I only posted this a little bit ago in old cblog, I may as well post it here for the new cbloggers:

After tonight's loss, I guarantee that mostly everyone has a part of them that feels like shit. Yeah, you may be happy that they got this far or you may be happy looking ahead to the future, but you still feel like shit. But take those other happy parts of you and think about that.

The Penguins faced ridiculous amounts of adversity this season. How many times were they not even expected to make the playoffs? Crosby went down. Malkin became a star and became inhuman and went on a rampage in the league, ripping teams apart. At times, he induced more fear into teams than Crosby did. Eaton went down. A defensive powerhouse. Granted, the Pens have plenty of defensemen, but this allowed the Pens to find the potential in Letang and allowed them to find someone at the trade deadline like Gill. Fleury went down. To me, that seemed more of a hit than Crosby. The Pens were left with Sabu. A somewhat inconsistent goalie who hadn't had much ice time. They call up Conklin. A goalie who was known for that fatal mistake in the playoffs. They gave him a chance. Without him, the Penguins would not be in the playoffs. Gary Roberts. A 40 year old veteran plagued with injuries, yet remains a physical force on the ice and in the minds of all the fans. Numerous other injuries attached onto that, allowing many AHLers to be called up and prove that they can be a part of this young team. Kennedy is a fine example of that. Trade deadline comes. Two of Pens fans' favorite players gone. A salary-packed Hossa and a no-name Dupuis brought in. Hossa becomes a beast. Dupuis becomes an energetic winger who compliments Sid and Hossa quite well. But what happens? Hossa down in his first game in a Pens uniform. His return, along with Fleury's and Crosby's allow the chemistry to start flowing. The Pens hung around and managed to pull of a 2nd seed going into the playoffs facing a team who, for lacked of a better word, owned them the previous year. Swept. Enter Jagr. 4-1. Enter the Flyers, the biggest rivalry. 4-1. Enter the Red Wings. Shutout two games in a row. Fight them in the next two games. 1-1. Backs up against the wall. Adversity right in their face. Just like they've had all year. What's left to lose? Nothing. It's their time to shine. Winning the next game may not win the series, but at least it would give hope. Give the NHL something to fear. The Penguins are for real. No one expected them in the playoffs. No one expected only 2 losses in three rounds. No one expected to hear the Penguins running for the Cup. Look at the future. Granted, not all players will be back. But this team is young. That doesn't mean they still don't have a chance. That does mean they sure as hell have plenty more to come. At first, I thought the Pens' new marketing slogan was lame. But in reality, it's true. Experience the Evolution. Do it.

Fellow Penguins fans, my brothers and sisters:

Remember the Benediction that got us here: This playoff does not belong to one Man, but to All who got us here. To Scuderi who solidified himself into a solid D-man not out of position. To Geno for stepping up when the Wiz went down to injury. To the Gronk for becoming a solid two-way defender. To Hoss for putting all those doubters to rest. To Flower for you good positioning and solid down low back stopping. To Sarge for another season of top defense. To Brooks for your outstanding physical presence. To the U.S.S Gill for keeping the grinders out of our crease. To Mr. Kennedy for overcoming adversity this offseason. To Scary Gary for his outstanding presence of rage and insurmountable fury imposing the fear of God into the enemy. And the others whom are recognized by the Pens Nation that we are so blessed to be a part of.

Let us together rebuild this Final, that we may share in the Days of Lord Stanley...

I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of the Penguins fails, when we forsake our system and break all bonds of puck support and hard work....but it is not this day. Today may be an hour of Red Wings and shattered defenses, but it is not our last! Their will come a day when the age of the Penguins comes crashing down, but it is not this day! This day we fight!! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth,I bid you stand, Men of Pittsburgh!

Since we all are posting our motivational speeches, I'll repost mine ...

We cannot give in right now ... we got to stand up and play our hearts out. We fought through the rough start in the beginning of the season. Where people were already saying we weren't going to make it to the play-offs. When we had Recchi, who seemed to give up, and we kept fighting through. We saw the injuries. Our hearts went out to Max Talbot when he got his high-ankle sprain. Our anger boiled when Eaton got the slew-foot by the Bruins. We saw Flower get a high ankle sprain. We witnessed the falling of our star, the man (not kid) who is the saviour of our team and the NHL. We witnessed and cried out in horror as a god broke his leg. Our hearts seemed at all-time low. People counted us out all over again because we lost our captain. But Therrien had faith, we had faith. Evgeni Malkin and Ty Conklin as one stepped up and took the team upon their shoulders. of course they had help along the way. One of the most dominate lines was formed in the National Hockey League with centerman Evgeni Malkin, right winger Petr Sykora, and left winger, Ryan Malone. The defense began to take its shape. Gonchar became a bigger and tougher presence. Orpik morphed into Free Candy. Scuderi took the tough with the good and developed even stronger defensively. Sydor helped the growth of the team. Whit worked on his consistency. We grew, we faced the adversity that the commentators tell us we haven't faced. We looked straight into the eye of all our troubles and problems and they backed down. We took the league by storm when they believed we had no chance. With an underrated star and a journeyman goalie, we embraced the cards fate had dealt us and we persevered into the team we are today. Shero determined as ever to have the winning team, a one destined to hold high the Stanley Cup above their heads, forged us an even stronger team through the trade deadline. We were brought the prize of all prizes in the deadline ... Marian Hossa. A truly talented man on both offense and defense. Also, USS Hal Gill, a towering defensemen and strong man, came into our possession as well as the unique and fast Dupuis. The sadness came with the loss of Christensen and Armstrong, but our team, even stronger than before, knew that destiny had other things in mind for these talented athletes. The fans began to adopt these new players on our team as their own and continued their quest for playoff history. We fell a few times along the way but have always saddled up and made our stand. We have never given up and neither has our team. We have seen some of the hardest plays and toughest defenders, but alas, we have yet to give up. We shall not give up. We have spent so many years in wait for our chance at the Cup. The one held proudly by Lemieux and other greats of our franchise. Lemieux hasn't given up on us, we haven't given up on us, and we need to fight for what is rightfully ours. We deserve this more than anyone out there. We have battled through it all and stand before thee in the quest for the Stanley. So what? The series is 3-1 in favor of Detriot. We cannot quit because we do not know the meaning of those words. We have fire, passion, drive, personality, talent, youth, and strength to hold the Stanley Cup and know it is ours. That history will forever call our names as champions. We cannot forget that we are champions in body, mind, and spirit. We cannot forget who we are and how we have worked for this chance. This is not the end, my friends. This is not the end.

"Obstruction" on Crosby? Are you people actually serious? Essentially, if the Wings don't allow the Pens to score, it's obstruction, right? F'ing get real, that was the play of the game by Zetterberg, and it's not illegal to tie up a players stick when he is going to take a shot. Ever see someone jump out of the penalty box and get to the point man to prevent his shot just before he gets it off? Is that obstruction, too? You've all lined up behind your idiot coach who whined for a week almost a week straight basically because Detroit was doing such a spectacular job defending the Pens. Even the media and the NHL Network/XM guys were making fun of Therrien about it, because it was just a bunch of B.S. And now here you all are, all whining and crying about "obstruction". Hilarious.

Most funny of all is how you all bashed all the Flyers/Rags fans for complaining about diving/embellishing and about the calls not being in their favor, and now here you all are, complaining about Osgood's dives, and about the calls not going in your favor. Karma is a bitch, isn't it?

Hey, look at it this way: At least the Wings won't win the Cup on Igloo ice, right?

I love trolls. They hate other teams more than they love their own team. It's the only way they have to manufacture preceived superiority because they are abject losers in real life & can't get their jollies in any way but to attempt to job the best jobbers on the planet. LOL. (Either that or they are band waggoners or front runners who are only around as long as they are winning.) Troll-like mentality is what is wrong with the whole world.

@xuscbausp - agreed. The Pensblog is for Pens fans. DUH *hits self in head* Why didn't I think of that?
While the reffing was bad it was bad (read inconsistent) for both teams.
For whatever reason the Pens didn't perform as they have proven they can (and I think it has to do with playing 3 rounds against arch rivals that left them physically and emotionally drained) and that had little to do with the Wings for the most part. The Pens had chances early in all 4 games and especially last night) that they didn't execute. (Posts, unforced errors such as unnecessarily rushed or bad passes, or missing the net, or not taking the shot God gave you.) Execute and no problems playing your own game. Don't execute and you are doomed to playing theirs.

Fleury29 said...

^^^Couldn't have said it better myself.

Anarion did you even read the David Staples article? If not, I suggest you do. It was he who first suggested obstruction, not any Pens fans from C-Blog. With the way the NHL is right now, we all know that "obstruction" wasn't going to get called. I don't think anyone here is saying, "Why wasn't that called?" We all know why.

The refs didn't lose the game for the Penguins, they lost it themselves but I still can't believe someone can shoot a broken stick at someone else in the Stanley Cup Final and it doesn't get called. Of the non-calls last night (on both the Pens and the Wings) that, to me, was the most egregious.

I'm sure any impartial hockey observer feels the same way.

Anarion said...

Most of you are obviously too young to remember how the NHL used to be, once upon a time. Otherwise, you wouldn't be complaining about so-called obstruction.

Back then, skill players like Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, etc., they'd be "obstructed" 10x more than they are in the "New NHL". There's no comparison, it's not even close.

You act like teams shouldn't be allowed to defend, like your players should just be allowed to freely skate and not be defended whatsoever. In the last few weeks, defense = obstruction to Pens fans, and not because of Staples, because of Therrien. No one was saying a word about this supposed obstruction before Therrien whined about it for days on end. I mean, seriously, what kind of coach spends an entire press conference complaining about "obstruction"? Crosby was the guy who had to come out and act like the coach, gave his team some hope and a lift by his attitude. Had the team followed Therrien's lead, they would long ago have lain down to die. I commend Crosby for his attitude, but I condemn Therrien for his. It's unprofessional, not how a coach should act, especially not after rebuking an opposing coach for complaining about diving in an earlier series. To go out and do the exact same thing is the most hypocritical thing he could possibly have done. Shows just how immature and childish he is. And now you all are following his lead, instead of following Crosby's.

Seriously, wake up and smell what you're shoveling. The Pens are losing because they're facing a team that is simply better than they are. Of course, they're not getting the bounces, but now they know how the Flyers/Rags felt in the 2nd/3rd rounds, the Pens got every bounce then, now it's evening out, so to speak.

Quingo77 said...

Anarion - your mom just called, she said you could come pick her up from my house....

obstruction on Crosby? maybe/maybe not......... that happens in front of the net all the time. I think the thing that was upsetting is that it came seconds before the puck got to Crosby, not when he was shooting as aholeion was suggesting by his nice example of the little guy on the point. Shooting the broken stick at Crosby - if Eddie O. hadn't said that was a penalty I don't know how many of us on here would have known that could have been a penalty

pointtothisblog - anarion keep your mom where she belongs, adversity keeps coming, hopefully that 5-on-3 wasn't the series, Therrien got the calls he wanted from the refs finally and the Pens didn't take advantage of them, point in case and it kills me to say it.....

anarion'smomisdeliciousblog

Anarion said...

Fleury29, do you really think the refs saw that play where the stick was shot at a Pen, and just didn't call it? Did it ever occur to you that maybe they just missed it? How do you think Rags fans felt when one of your guys high-sticked Drury in Game 5 of the Rags series, causing him to bleed profusely, and nothing is called, only to have Drury later called for a less significant high-sticking late in the 3rd, leading to a Pens PP in OT that took all momentum away from the Rags and gave it to the Pens, basically allowing the Pens the series clincher?? How do you think the Rags fans felt then? I can tell you, as neither a Pens or Rags fan, even I wasn't happy about it, can't even imagine how they felt. My point is, sometimes the refs just miss things, it happens, it's part of the game, get over it, move on.

For anyone who thinks that was 'obstruction' by Zetterberg against Crosby, take a look at this article on NHL.com:

now that i've thought about it, you really could say officiating has cost us this series, cause it's been that bad. just saying. nhl needs to clean the zebras up big time for next year. on the whole, playoff officiating has been atrocious.

anarion - this is the new nhl, not the old one. congrats on comparing applies to oranges, douchebag. it's illegal now, and that's all that matters. if it's not obstruction, it's interference.

J.S. said...

So what's your point? This game wasn't played 10 years ago, it was played last night. Either call the obstruction penalties, and yes that goes on both sides, or remove that rule from the rulebook so we don't have to have this discussion.

norojo said...

all of you who think we still have any chance whatsoever, please tell me what youre smoking because i really need some after last night.
lets stop complaining and blaming refs like we're from philly and just except that our team collapsed this series and simply couldn't find the back of the net.
yes, we did not get a single break this series in terms of getting a beneficial roll of the puck or a flukey shot going in, but we sure as hell had enough pp's each game to get 4 wins and simply didn't get the job done.
this all feels so much worse knowing our team is about to be raped by free agency. we may have the top 3 centers in the nhl but it could be years until we get the necessary supporting cast to get back to the cup.
everyone who is saying that we should just be happy to have gotten to this point and that we shouldn't have made it this far due to all the injuries, you are either delusional or in denial. the bottom line is, this season was a failure. the goal wasn't just to make it to the playoffs like last year, we had a championship team and we didn't get it done. let's except it like grown men and women and hope that we don't have to wait another 16 years til we make it back.

Anarion said...

You're missing my point. My point is that the "obstruction" that you're pointing to isn't a fraction of what would've been done back then. What you're calling obstruction isn't obstruction, it's called playing defense.

Just get over it already, you're losing because you're not good enough, same reason the Flyers/Rags/Sens lost to you, because they weren't good enough.

Do you really want to continue to be hypocritical after all bashing you did of Flyers/Rags fans for complaining?

Sad, really.

Should HCMT called a timeout before to set things up?

Possibly, but with a 5 on 3 you figure they know what to do.

Should Malkin be taken off the point and put back where he belongs on the wing?

ABSOLUTELY! Especially considering that he HATES playing point and has said so in the media. He's way too predictable there too...always going to Gonchar and always trying to make an ill-advised play across the blue line.

Should Roberts have been on the ice?

Sure! He and Malone are our two guys in front of the net. He's just as good there as Malone and Malone had just pulled a 45 second shift. It's not like there was anything Roberts did wrong or didn't do there anyhow.

That 5 on 3 was our entire season. The tying goal was all but gift wrapped for our taking. Honestly speaking....after not scoring there with the game and season on the line, we didn't deserve to win.

It all comes down to that.

The Seeker said...

@ Anarion

Your linked article is accurate. You posting it as a defense against blatant interference/obstruction is not.

You see, the difference in your article and what happened on the ice last night is like night and day.

Every technique mentioned there involves how to make a play on someone with POSSESSION of the puck.

It doesn't talk at all about doing those things to someone BEFORE they've had the CHANCE to possess the puck.

The word CHANCE is what makes it obstruction. Zetterberg planted and then tied-up Crosby's stick before the pass ever got to Crosby.

I don't blame that one incident for losing the game. I wouldn't even mention it at all if you weren't arguing the opposite. But them's the facts.

J.S. said...

anarion, and you're missing my point. You keep on mentioning this "back then". Last night's game was not played "back then", it was played last night. My point being that IF the game would have been called with more consistency, there might have been a different outcome. This wasn't a 4-0 or a 3-0 blowout like games one and two. A badly played or a tipped puck on a man advantage may have made a difference last night, or perhaps a play could have been set up if the Wings weren't busy trying to play tackle football on Malkin. Now if those calls were made, would it have guaranteed a chance for the Pens to at least tie the game? Absolutely not, but knowing the game was equally called would have put some people's feelings about the game at ease.

The Seeker said...

How presumptuous to tell Pens fans about obstruction. The 2 biggest stars at that time were beneficiaries of the NHL's protection of a dying game. Lemieux and Jagr were poster boys. The NHL allowed the refs to permit gross obstruction because, as they themselves admitted, the best players have to be stopped to give the other players a chance and even out the playing surface because the talent tilted it. Many refs were former mediocre players or players who never made the show and who believed they were helping players like themselves and preserve the dying Canadian ideal of thuggery. They admitted it. That's the old guard garage league we are talking about.

What has been displayed here is the "New NHL -old school," which I would define as relativism. It's Ok for us but not you. It's the cynical encouragement of the employment of skill techniques with the ultimate goal of transsubstantiation of the legal into the illegal. The aim of such techniques is not to find a way to play within the confines set up by the rules, but instead to find ways to gain advantage by subversion. It is sneering, scornful, dishonorable and Unsportsmanlike.

Garage League part deux. You heard it hear first.

So nice it had to be said twice.

I also fail to see how the fact that Crosby, et al would've been obstructed more 20 years ago makes any obstruction committed NOW legal.

Though the Zetterberg/Crosby incident wasn't nearly as bad as when Malkin finally showed some spark and carried into four Red Wings one of whom bearhugged him*, tossed him to the ice and sent him crashing into the net...all with no call.

There's a difference betweens refs letting the players play and outright ignoring of obvious penalties

Although after the absurd and sad spectacle of Bryan Murray, Tom Renney, John Stevens, their players and their fans bitching and pissing and moaning about the refs, I hate to complain about the officiating.

Which is, I'm sure, exactly what they wanted. They created a situation wherein, after getting rightfully mocked by Penguins fans for their stupid ranting, can turn right around when a Pens fan complains and say "See! You only whine when it's your team blah blah blah"

I thought about this for a while and I realized the difference.

Pens fan complaining about the refs:

"Man, the officiating fucking sucks. Can you believe these guys? What the hell?"

Cryers/Rags/Sens fan doing the same thing:

"Bad call! Bad call! ZOMG! CONSPIRACY! BETTMAN AND CINDY CRYSBABY ARE LOVERS! WAAAAAAHHHHH!"

I would very much like to see Game 5 get swung to the Pens as a result of a questionable call and see if the Wings fans fall into that same trap.

I only posted once after the Wings loss in game three, this will be my only post prior to game 5.

Don't get too worked up over the Pen's lose guys. We're in the hole big-time, but our chance for getting the Cup will just increase as the years go by. We have one of the youngest teams in the league and we have one of the best teams in the league.

Detroit out played us and they deserve the Cup more than anyone. They are the only real challenge we faced in the entire playoffs. However, Detroit is an old team. Some of their better players have been in the NHL since before Crosby, Malkin, Staal, and Letang were even born.

I am looking forward to many more great things to come (and also a hockey dynasty).

@ j.j,

How about the "stick check" on Crosby in game 4 when he didn't have the puck?

What about that little play where a Wing's player shot a broken stick at Crosby right after Crosby burned by him (which should've resulted in a penalty shot)?

How about that "dive" on Talbot after Lebda hit him 10 seconds after the whistle?

Do you need more?

I know this is a stretch as far as a comparison.

For those of you old of enough to remember, the Pirates were down 3-1 in 1979 and everyone keep saying they were no match for Baltimore the whole series.

We all know how that turned out.

I had faith in the Bucs back then.

Who's to say the Pens can't pull off 3 straight in this cup finals. If they pull off a win tomorrow in Detroit....who knows. We could be witness to one of the greatest comebacks in sports history.

GO PENS!!

Fleury29 said...

norojo, you'll get no argument from me. The Pens were outplayed last night, they played like shit and the Wings were on their game.

That said, this is a seven game series. It isn't over until it's over. I still believe.

If the Pens can play with desperation, as they did in game three, they can still win the series. Trying to beat Detroit in Detroit is a tough order, though. The realist in my says it can't be done but the Pens fan in my says it must be done.

As someone already pointed out, the black and gold are about to be decimated by free agency. They're probably not making it back next season so they need to do this now.

Anarion, what you seem to be unable to accept is that everyone here is bitching about non-calls or bad calls against both teams.

As Pens fans, the most obvious non-calls to us were against the Wings, of course, but the officiating his been horrible all season.

I don't care what happened ten years ago, the officiating was horrible then, too. The point is, as someone has already mentioned, the NHL refs need to either enforce the rules that are on the books all the time or take the rules off the books.

do you really think the refs saw that play where the stick was shot at a Pen, and just didn't call it?

Well, yes. But if you can find me a replay of it, we can be sure. I've looked and was unable to find one. As I recall a ref was awful close to the play and if he didn't see it he should have but I'll reserve judgment until we can see the replay.

Oh, really? Sure about that? Maybe you should re-read the article, or maybe you need me to point it out to you??

Under the section entitled "Stick Press", I quote the following:

"Just like the lifting the stick technique, the stick press is a good maneuver for a defensive player to use when in a tight one-on-one battle with a forward, especially in front of your net. Your goal with this technique is to prevent your check from receiving or executing a pass, shooting or picking up a loose puck.

Once again, slide your bottom hand down the shaft of the stick to gain leverage on your opponent.
Using the lower half of your stick, press down hard on the shaft of your opponent's stick. This will prevent him/her from moving their stick.

You will see many NHL defensemen using this technique when offensive players are parked in front of the net. One of the only ways to legally score goals is by a player using his/her stick to shoot or deflect the puck into the net. If you have their stick tied up, you are limiting their chances of success."

So you see, that is decribing EXACTLY what Zetterberg did last night, prevented Crosby from receiving the pass/one-timing the pass by pressing his stick down. This is completely legal, nothing wrong with it at all. What I just quoted from the article has to do with players WITHOUT possession of the puck, players parked in front of the net, waiting for a pass. With the words used, there's no possible way you can argue otherwise.

Fleury29, I understand what you're saying, but what you still don't get is this: Through the first 3 rounds, the Pens were the beneficiaries of the majority of the calls, the calls were going their way. You guys weren't complaining about the officiating then, were you? No, you weren't, because the calls were going your way. So why complain now? Because the calls aren't going your way. Don't even try to say that if the calls were still going your way all the time that you'd still be complaining. We both know that's not true, so don't lie even to yourself about it.

Instead of complaining about the officiating through the first three series, you instead made fun of opposing team's fans for doing so, and are now being hypocritical for doing the same thing they were doing. Go ahead, try to justify it to yourself any way you wish, but the reality is what it is. You weren't complaining then, you are complaning now. That's hypocritical, period.

Its hard to tell whether the Pens collapse is due to Det's system or if the Pens just collapsed and key players haven't played like the did throughout the rest of the playoffs. Or a combination of both?

No one here is doing that. The way the Wings have owned our offense you'd think their name was Mario Lemieux. We're not playing well, that's why we've lost. But there have been bad calls, as there have been all playoffs, all season.

I can't remember how many times during the Rangers and Flyers series I said, "Wow, I can't believe we got away with that."

The refs suck. Nothing much you can do about it except bitch. But I'm not blaming them for our losses.

That's just not a penalty on Zets.

That play happens 10x a game, that time it was just in a huge spot. We've praised guys like Scuderi, Gill and Eaton all season long for making that play.
How many times have you said "great play" when a Penguin lifts the stick of a player when the puck is approaching? Same deal. It's just a good play.
At every level of play, you are taught to tie up the stick.

The one that irked me was Malkin getting the puck through 3 defenders, then being dragged down as he goes to get it. Hall got a call for the exact same thing during the game and it wasn't nearly as bad as what Malkin received.

Fleury29 said...

Anarion,

You've made valid points, but i do believe that the officiating througout the entire playoffs has been called into question countless times on tPB and Cblog. And remember, we were the beneficiaries of many of those calls. Most of us on here can see it both ways.

The thing about the officiating is, whether or not that's a stick check or obstuction, i'm not going to debate right now. If it were any other blatant penalty, would it have been called? Like Staples said in his article, a foul is a foul is a foul is a foul no matter the score, the time of game, etc. and in the NHL, in any time era, it has never been that way. That's what makes it a "garage league."

Contrary to what you think, I like to see a fairly called game. Should the team I'm pulling for lose the game, then so be it. I'll admit when they got outplayed. However, and I hate to admit doing this, but I'll also step up and admit when they got jobbed by the refs. I'm not gonna say that if they got the calls that it was gonna be a guaranteed win. I certainly agree that the launching of the stick at Crosby should've been a penalty, and probably a major, at that. But as I indicated above, I'm pretty sure the refs simply didn't see it. Of course, that doesn't excuse the mistake, nothing does, but these things happen, it's part of the game. It sucks, but it's something that all teams have to deal with. It's mostly only when our own teams get jobbed that we tend to complain, as is only natural.

Oh, and I forgot...most importantly, I think what's missing most is consistency. I think consistency is all that most reasonable fans are asking for, and it's surely not there. Far from it, and that is what frustrates me the most. I don't think there's some sinister plot out there to help this team win, or that team lose, I think the refs are just so utterly imcompetent that there's absolutely no consistency with the way things are called in this league.

We have two options right now.

1. Give up. Most losers pick this one.

2. Die trying. Most winners do this.

great game... can someone tell me how you can call a guy (or kid) the best player in the game when he doesn't play on the PK? Seems to me if you're going to have that title, you shouldn't be on the bench in the SCF on the kill

he doesn't play goal either...

I'm sure all the GREATS didn't do much PK work before they could buy a beer.

Well, Micheal, we'll still call him the best player in the world. Ask Coach Therrien why he's not out there, or why he changed to the third line PP unit in the second period.

Crosby is not currently the best in the league. But his play this series reminds me of a scene from that football movie 'The Replacements'

the coach is talking to the quarterback and says, "When I look at you, I see the man you are now, and the man you oughta be. When those two meet, should make for one hell of a football player."

Seeing Crosby's potential in this series, I have no doubt that he could turn into the best out there. I do hope that he starts spending some time on the PK to round out his game. There is a ton of upside in this kid and I don't see any reason why he should be made to wait as long as Steve Yzerman did before winning his first cup.

The great anarion debate:

you weren't here to see what this blog was saying about the calls in the first three series. I think the officiating has been horrible both ways. And I certainly recall the cblog discussing these missed calls even after a victory. Good rush to judgment bud.

@anarion: Well, at least your not a jerk. Coming on here to talk hockey is ok with me ... wish I could have gotten in on the discussion.

@sh0ez: I love that picture. I have a picture that's of Roberts holding back Laraque and Staal as Gill watches ... I'll scan it ...

PENS IN SEVEN, DO IT

Annie said...

GODDAMN IT! I just made a huge post that deleted itself! Let's see how much I can remember...

Let me start off by saying FUCK THIS SHIT. Like a lot of you guys, I'm done moping. Bring on Monday. I'm actually looking forward to it - the team is facing elimination, and you can bet that they'll be playing the most all-out, balls-to-the-wall hockey that we've yet seen this season. They've overcome so much adversity and beaten so many odds this season that they're not going to let a bunch of old men take that away from them without a fight. This is FAR from over. They won't fade quietly into the night - they're going to fight all the way to the bitter end, and we fans will too.

Whether we win or lose, the Pens will learn from this, the same way they learned from the series with Ottawa last year. And damn anyone who doesn't think they'll forget about this, and how it feels to be so close to winning. This fire is NOT going to go out anytime soon.

Victory will be ours. Whether it's this year, next year, or in the near future. I guarantee it.

Remember:

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Victory's not Victory
Which alters when we lose or fall behind,
Or when we toil in mediocrity.
O no! It is forever with our team,
That lasts through tempests and is never shaken;
From superstars to fourth line we agree
That without one, Pens' chemistry is shaken..
We have a ways to go, and may feel numb
We may not win at all, and we may fume.
But Victory does not change in time to come,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error, and upon me proved,
I never watched, nor no Pen ever played!

Gary bless us all.

GO PENS!!! BELIEVE!!!

(I don't know about you guys, but right now I feel like I could take on the entire Detroit Red Army and win.)

Annie said...

Also, we've had a glorious first three series. Don't forget how sweet that feels either.

Doesn't anyone else remember the assloads of PK time Sid was getting before the injury? I was there when he set up Max for a shortie against the Rags back in November. HCMT was really adding to his repertoire this season, using him in every situation. Then he got hurt.

And that is the ONLY reason he's not been on the PK since he came back. We all know the ankle is a key component of the shot-blocking that penalty killers must do (and that Sid did do, despite Madden BEGGING him not to during an interview). If they're not risking it, then it means it shouldn't be risked.

xuscbausp said...

silly pengirl

Hip said...

@pensgirl - I couldn't watch a lot of games early in the season but I vividly remember the articles and discussions about how Sid was maturing as a player - taking on more defensive responsibilities and specifically, working the PK.

sh0ez said...

@ chica: Hmm.

sh0ez said...

@chica: It's there now.

Pensgirl said...

Sorry Xusc, I'll try hard not to do it again! :P

Hip, you shoulda heard Madden pleading with Sid not to block shots anymore. Sid was all, "I don't always, I swear! This one time I didn't block one that Kovalchuk shot." You could tell Madden wanted to say "So you're stupid but you're not crazy. Great."

Marc said...

I’m not trying to be political here, but I feel like the Pens and particularly Crosby have a sense of entitlement here, and it reminded me of Father Pfleger’s sermon/speech about Hillary.
The Pens feel like they deserve the Cup because of who they are, and now they complain, just like what Pfelger said about Hillary…
Once again, I’m not trying to be political here - I just found it entertaining
So…

Father Pfleger Speaks about the Stanley Cup Finals in support of Sidney Crosby and the Penguins

Michael Pfleger: I really believe that he just always thought: The Cup mine.
I’m Gary’s baby boy; I’m Canadian, and this is mine. I just got to get up and step into the Hall of Fame.
And then out of nowhere came: Hey, I’m Henrik Zetterberg!
And he said “Oh, damn. Where did you come from? I’m Canadian. I’m entitled. There’s a European man stealing my show!”

Maybe Don Cherry should get a copy of this transcript as well…

OK, I feel slightly better now. Went for an afternoon skate and played a semi-decent game. Some dude at the rink was wearing a McCarty jersey, who as we all know is my 2nd favorite wing to job (Cheli obviously being the first). He was actually cool even after I made a few poker/gambling comments to him. He said he only became a Wings fan after he lived in Detroit for the last 10 yrs and it was hard not to pull for them when they were going to at least the conference finals year after year. I gave him crap about their payroll and he even agreed and said he didn't like how they bought into other teams at deadline time but prior to the cap, but there was nothing illegal over it prior to the new CBA. Then, to show what a good sport he was about my earlier McCarty jokes, about a minute into the game, he takes a slap which goes right for my ribs. Hence why I'm only slightly better right now.

Which gives me an idea: pensblog pickup game in the offseason, or are we too spread out?
