Vengeance Snore

This one is for game 7 back in 1989.
For the 42-game losing streak in Philadelphia.

For the time you took Mario away from us in 1997.

It is to exorcise the demons of the Spectrum.
It is for Andy Delmore and for that damn five-OT loss.

It is for Bobby Clarke and all the shit he has pulled.
For Ed Snider's lack of class.

It is for all the crap that the city of Philly has come up with over the years.

Bury 'Em, Bury 'Em all.

Whoever called the Briere/Richards/Prospal line the "DMV" yesterday, that was outstanding.

Wonder if Detroit will be like the Pens vs. the Rags and quickly shake off a lackluster Game Four performance or will this series turn into Montreal vs. Boston and the near epic collapse?

I know what I'm hoping for.

Anyone watch Stan Savran yesterday? Holy hell what a show

Aside from the utter sadism displayed in making us watch the Goal That Shall Not Be Spoken Of from 1993, he was on fire.

The Cliff's Notes version:

He basically said the city of Philadelphia sucks, the entire Philly fanbase are deluded, cruel assholes, and that the staff of the Wachovia Urinal are rude and incompetent.

It was life-changing.

"They still think it's 1975 and they're the Broad Street Bullies! They still show Dave Schultz fights on the Jumbotron during intermissions! Move on already!"

Ahhh, nothing like waking up to really small youtube clips here at the Pensblog that make my eyes bleed! Just kidding, you know we appreciate your the hard work you guys do on the site.

I can't stop thinking about tonight's game. We've waited 16 years to see the Penguins get at least SOME kind of hardware.

I know that the ultimate goal is not to hoist, or more accurately to stare uncomfortably at, the Prince of Whales Trophy, but you're lieing if you don't say that you won't get excited when you see Sid trying not to look directly at that cursed piece of tin.

Stoosh said...

I want to say kudos and plaudets to the Pensblog for managing to get me fired up as all hell this morning with that very first part of today's post.

As I mentioned above, it was 4:30 in the morning when I read that. I couldn't fall back to sleep after reading it. In fact, I got so pumped up for tonight's game, I think I ran five miles at a dead sprint (think those zombie/infected people from "28 Days Later") and threw violently to the ground anything that remotely looked decorated in orange and black. There were horses, and a man on fire, and I killed a guy with a trident.

Sooska said...

@ raybin- Last Friday on pregame Sportsbeat Stan & crew did their own updated version of DVE's Flyers Scum song with video. It was good stuff. Stan always says he is not a "fan," except of the Cleveland Indians, but he sure sounded like one. Definitely loathes the Fleyrs and Philthydelphia. In fact, we made Stan saying "We'll Kick your Arse You Flyers Scum" into an mp3. I downloaded it to my phone and use as a ringtone.

I also heard this morning that Stan was interviewing Sykora and BGL kissed him.

Fanhouse has an interview with Malkin where he says the Flyers gave up in Game 3

Almost as good as reading the translated article is the one response by a (realistic!) Flyers fan:

"You didn't need a translator to find out what happened. Seems to me, and being a Flyers fan since their inception, somewhere during this series they decided to read classic novels on their days off, but unfortunatly, the team chose a box set from H.G.Wells, "The Invisible Man", "The Time Machine", and they fooled us fans by giving us "crib sheets" when we thought that this series would actually be a "War Of The Worlds". Giving Pittsburgh their just dues, they went to the same library, but they checked out,"Red Badge Of Courage" by Audie Murphy."

JYo said...

I guess I got lucky. Not that I know anything about it, but I can't argue that "it sucks to blow." Is it 7:30 yet?

threshhold9k said...

Audie Murphy wrote 'To Hell and Back', not 'The red badge of courage'(can't remember who wrote that). Oooo you smart Flyers fans.

Seconding the "Flyers fans are f'ing morons" sentiment: Audie Murphy starred in the movie version of The Red Badge of Courage.

Then again, I doubt any of them have ever read a book, so I'm not surprised they'd think that.

Best wishes for your surgery!

Jacob said...

Seconding the second to the Flyers fans being morons. The Red Badge of Courage was written by Stephen Crane and is regarded as one of best anti-war novels in American literature, not really one that would get you fired up to win a hockey game.

Apparently Philly's idea of being "well-read" means that you can actually read the title. I guess that is an accomplishment for the side of the state that ought to be ceded to New Jersey.

letsgopsu said...

Stoosh, I've been meaning to talk to you about that. You should find yourself a safehouse or a relative close by. Lay low for a while, because you're probably wanted for murder.

Stoosh said...

A Pens win tonight changes the entire dynamic of the Pens-Flyers rivalry fer Pens fans.

As the staff pointed out, the Flyers have mostly had the upper hand in this whole rivalry.

On top of the house of horrors that was the Spectrum, 42 games without a win, being forced to watch Lemieux grudgingly pass the torch to Lindros in 1997 (*luckily Lindros gave himself a concussion trying to handle it), and then Keith Primeau, we've had to deal with the Flyers fans.

There were all the jabs from obnoxious, know-nothing Flyers fans about Pens teams being soft - even with this team earlier in the year - and how Pens teams were always intimidated by the big, bad Flyers, and how they could never outhit the big, bad Flyers.

We've had to deal with their fans continuing to perpetuate the fallacy that the Pens tanked for five years straight. We've had to listen to them advance ridiculous conspiracy theories about the league fixing drafts and lotteries so the Pens could somehow wind up with this core group of youngsters, as if the league somehow knew back in 2002 that the eventual combo of Whitney, Fleury, Malkin, Crosby and Staal would produce this kind of result.

We've heard their fans try to devalue this Pens playoff run with accusations that the league fixed playoff games to allow the Pens to keep playing. We've listened to all the crap about Sidney whining and Sidney diving and "the league loves Sidney" and blah, blah, blah.

But there's one thing Flyers fans seemed to ignore throughout this entire series, and perhaps this is fitting for a fanbase that really never saw the bigger picture.

They've never seemed to recognize the enormity of what's really at stake in this series.

We've never met the Flyers with a berth in the Cup Finals going to the winner. This series is as meaningful as it ever gets for games between the two franchises.

So with a Pens win tonight, we get to force this joke of a fanbase to sit in their arena and watch their archrivals - the soft team from across the state - complete a four-game sweep of their beloved Flyers. They have to watch these teams shake hands and then watch the Pens - led by the one player they all despise more than anyone - celebrate his first appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals. And they have to watch Sid and the Pens do it on Philadelphia ice.

If we win tonight, we will ALWAYS have this to throw in the face of the Flyers fans. We met with the Stanley Cup Finals at stake. We didn't just win...we swept. We embarrassed your team in front of you.

Rest assured this is not lost on Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin, or any of the other Pens players tonight. We're one win away from the STANLEY CUP FINALS. This Pens team will be as focused as its ever been to this point tonight.

i think even green eggs and ham is too sophisticated for a flyers fan to comprehend.

Sid...Geno...Gonch...Flower...USS Hal Gill...I come to you as a representative of Pens fans everywhere.

Great moments...are borne...from great opportunity.

An' that's what you have here, tonight, boys...that's what you've EARNED here tonight.

A chance to sweep the Flyers...a chance to do it on their own front of their own fans

(*cut to shot of Crosby drooling*).

One game.

We played 'em eight times during the season, and they won five. They won five.

But not THIS game. Not tonight.

Tonight, we outskate 'em.

Tonight, we outhit 'em.

And tonight, WE ELIMINATE 'EM because WE CAN!

Tonight...WE...are the greatest hockey team in the world.

You were born to be hockey players, every one of ya. And you were meant to BE HERE...tonight!

This is YOUR time. Their time is's o-o-over.

I'm sick and tired of hearin' about the officiating and what a "great hockey team" the Flyers have. Screw 'em!

A chance to sweep the Flyers...on their front of their fans...and a chance to go to the Stanley Cup Finals in the process. You lose this one and you'll take it to your fuckin' grave...

(steps towards door)

...your fuckin' grave!

(pauses) YOUR time...

Now go out there and take it!

Dr. Turkleton said...

stoosh said:

They've never seemed to recognize the enormity of what's really at stake in this series.

I think they collectively know/knew the Pens are/were the better team coming into the series. So, they rallied around events that took place 2.5 years ago [Crosby-'diving'] & have run with that theme instead of trying to figure out ways their team MIGHT be able to beat the Pens [Stevens has kinda figured it out -- by changing his 'Game-Plan', albeit a little too late heading into an elimination game {changes should've been made after game 1}]

Now the trumpet summons us again - not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need; not as a call to battle, though embattled we are - but a call to bear the burden of getting hammered and cheering our asses off, year in and year out, "rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation" - a struggle against the common enemies of the Penguins: Filthy fans, their media, their teams and the city of Filthadelphia itself.

Can we forge against these enemies a grand and global alliance, North Side and South Side, East End and West End, that can assure a more fruitful season for all the PENS NATION? Will you join in that historic effort?

In the long history of the PENS, only a few generations have been granted the role of cheering our team in its hour of Stanley Cup Playoffs. I do not shank from this responsibility - I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other fan in any other city. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavour will light our city and all dwell in it -- and the glow from that fire can truly light the WORLD

And so, my fellow PENS fans: ask not what your team can do for you - ask what you can do for your TEAM!

But I can't help checking C-blog once every 45 minutes or so just to see what's going on. I don't smoke, so instead of smoke breaks, I take C-blog breaks. That's what I call good rationaliztion.

If we win this series, we'll have beaten my two least favorite NHL franchises on the road to the Cup Finals.

Johnny Wrath said...

I'm going to really enjoy this game tonight. I'm seeing message boards where the new talking point is that Philly only wasn't a "cup contender" for a single season, while the "NHL gave you's your team", sucked for 5, etc etc.

Then there's "you mortgaged the future for Hossa" thing, which leads to the "you can't keep all your guys and we can" claim...

Basically my point is this: Isn't it wonderful that dejected fans of teams we've thrashed can't criticize the hockey? I do hope we get Detroit, and I do hope Franzen is healthy, because I don't want to see a widespread "we weren't at 100%" argument the way we've seen an international "Sid dives" campaign.

Side note: "Why Not Us?" is just too easy. Its a shame that Philly is getting bounced tonight so we can't have a "Wouldn't it be more prudent to contain that garbage, Philly?" whiteout.

@johnny wrath

If the excuses weren't so infuriating, they'd be hilarious. They still kinda are.

These people are insane though.

We "mortgaged our future for Hossa"? Excuse me?

God bless Crusher and Army. I'll always love them both, especially Army. But they were hardly our future.

And, let's face it, Christensen hadn't quite measured up to expectations anyway.

They'll be more valuable to Atlanta than they were here.

As for the 1st round pick and Somehow I cannot imagine either coming back to bite us very hard. especially since it's very likely Hossa will be departing, we can always deal his rights for a first round pick.

And if they want to talk stupid personnel moves, this is the team that has ruined their salary cap with absurdly huge deals to Briere, Hartnell and Richards, only the latter being worth half a damn.

This is the team that still employs Jim Dowd and Derian Hatcher.

This is the team that thought Downie was THEIR future.

This is so pathetic of them. It's so easy to slap down all their bullshit.

After seeing that i wish i could go forward in time about 5.5 hours and just get to this game. I wanna know what the Stanley Cup finals feels like. I just wanna see the two best teams in the league go at it in a best of 7 series. I was alive for the first 2 Cups, but unfortunately I was like 3 years old for the second one. Mario has his two Cups as a player, but after all that he's done for this franchise, he deserves one as an owner more than probably every single owner in the NHL.

Sooska said...

@ jyo - I am surprised there aren't more biotech jobs around the Burgh.

One of big drawbacks is how expensive housing is everywhere else. Here in LV the housing stock is awful - old and small or too new and crappy and 2x - 2-1/2 x the Burgh and in some cases more. It's not as bad as MD or DC or NoVA, but it's bad enough. Health care here isn't up to snuff either-the HMOs still require referrals and we haven't had that in Pgh for several years. I have concluded Pittsburgh is great because it is somewhat isolated transportation -wise, thus not a destination for undesirables. That is also the biggest drawback to luring new businesses or manufacturers.
