First chance to get on cblog tonight, so this comes late but the CBC guys were whining up a storm about that no-goal on the apparent theory that he intended to kick the puck to his stick. Too bad the kicking rule doesn't turn on intent, numbnuts.
honestly i think we got away with a call. the replays didn't slow it down enough but it appears that the distinct kicking motion may have had the puck go off letangs stick. neither errey or steigy mentioned it at all. if it did hit letangs stick it would have been good for sure. no mention whether it did just that it was a distinct kicking motion. anyone who can post videos later should.

@ dappie99 - had the same thought. Bibbs mentioned about Letang's stick being in there but then he dropped it. I usually think Bibbs and 29 are pretty fair judges of these things and admit when any team gets jobbed by the refs.

@ Dr.Turk: I think the Pens could handle the Craps in a similar fashion, even with OV. The have no defense and Huet hasn't been playing like Gerber did. I am pulling for them big time. Not only so the Pens get them next, but also so the Cryers go home.
Even though a Cryers win likely means the Habs have to put up with their goonery, it also means the Pens would play a Rags team that has mostly dismantled Brodeur and the Debs. I'll take the Craps over that any day.

What the hell are we going to do for a week without Pens hockey? Am I going to have to see my friends and interact with the world? Bah!
Admit it: if you were asked who'd have the series-winning goal, you wouldn't have gone with RUUUUUU. (I wouldn't have either.)
On Letang's stick in the no-goal: I think that's the piece that took the war room so long to decide on, and I'd say they made the right one. First of all, I don't think it did hit his stick. I just rewatched my videos and I'm more certain than ever that it never hit. The view from behind the net, in particular, really looks like the puck went off Vermette's foot and behind the blade of Letang's stick, under the shaft...widerightblog.
But even if I allow that it wasn't certain...here's my 'professional' legalistic opinion on how the call was/should be made:
1. Goal ruled on ice.
2. Review has to conclusively overturn it.
3. Distinct kicking motion is obvious, which is a conclusive overturning.
4. Puck may have hit a stick on the way in, but no angle actually shows that, so there's nothing there to negate the conclusive overturning (I would argue that the action requiring an overturning is obvious, and you can't fail to make that call because of something else that isn't so certain.).
The opposing argument would be that any inconclusive piece of the review renders the whole thing inconclusive and requires the on-ice call to stand. But I find that weak in light of such definite evidence to overturn.

Turk, if there is any video out there that conclusively shows Letang's stick hit that puck, then that's karma baby. If you remember, in game 1 last year Sid scored with his shin, foot firmly planted on the ice, as he slid on one knee, and they waived it off as a kick. Now that was a bad call!

They showed Sid's goal from last year and as they mentioned during the broadcast, if you waved that goal off last year, you absolutely had to wave this one off as well.
Vermette damn near wound up with his right leg while Sid's was more of a sweeping motion. Vermette's stick blade was much closer to his left boot than his right. In fact, I think Letang's stick blade was almost pinning Vermette' stick blade up against Vermette's left skate boot.
When they slowed it down and took it almost frame by frame, you could tell there was no way it would've hit either stick blade.

Oh, my friend and I argued over the atmosphere there'd be out from of Mellon Arena. He said there'd be 100 people tops. I laughed at him. Good to hear so many people went out for that. Wish I could have been there. Anyone have any good stories to share?
Stoosh, ya hit the nail on the head - again. Worthy teams use (real or imagined) ref jobbings as fuel to play better, harder, faster. They overcome bad calls and render such issues moot. There have been times, during tight games, where we've been assessed a craptastic penalty, and I always say to my roommate, "Shorthanded goal." You steal momentum back by playing better than the other team. You make the bad call mean nothing by turning your underdog status into something positive (even if it's just a good chance and not a goal, it still works for this purpose). That's what winners do.
Lapointe however was very classy in the handshake line giving Crosby a hug as well as a congratulatory handshake.

They were outshot by like 50 percent and the Pens goaltender, who sucks, was good, but the calls were awful. What a joke it was to see Vermette's goal waved off. Kicking motion? Didn't look like it. But my head was in my ass, so what do I really know anyway? And that Ruutu... WHAT A DIVER. I TAKE CHRIS NEIL OVER HIM ANY DAY! That goal required no talent at all! And no call on USS Gill for hitting Alfie too hard on the boards? Crysby can get back to his dad, Gary Bettman, and go get killed in the second round! LET'S GOLF PENS!

the arena was awesome. it seemed like everyone there understood hockey (aka not many fairweather fans) it was great to watch a game around so many devoted pens fans.
I heard we won some game tonight? Yeah? I think 180 some comments say whatever else I could possibly come up with. Savor the flavor guys, it's gonna be a bumpy ride, and with a week off, that's a lot of savoring. A plethora if u will.

It's just funny to see the people who told me I was wasting my money going to games 4 seasons ago are now "hockey fans" That's why I never watch games with my friends.. When you come home from PSU make sure you watch a game from the arena!

Seeker, thanks...my computer burns DVD's, but I can't get my made DVD's ripped to make a copy of. I've asked friends and my fam...no help. My Great-Aunt has the same problem...also a huge Pens fan. She has all of the games too. Same with my cuz. I work at night. I've missed a lot of the games live. Both last year and this year. So I bought a recorder. (I'm amassing quite a collection)

Are you two guys serious or just jobbing around?
The west is very tough and the advantage the east winning team will have is that the team from the west will likely be pretty beat up by the time they get to the finals because no matter who they play, it will be a tough matchup every round. There are no Sens, Craps, and Cryers out there. Not that its a bad thing to be in the east for just that reason...
In a perfect world, Jags would come back and be appreciated for what he did here. In the real world, there is very little chance of that. A lot of people still hold a grudge against him for some reason. You only have to go back a couple of weeks to see the kind of jobbing he takes when he hits the Igloo ice.

I'm with you on everything.
While I try not to be biased (hard, though), I still think the Pens are the best all-around team going right now, especially with Fleury's insane streak as of late (nothing wrong with riding a goalie through the playoffs). The west has a lot of talent, all of which seems to be spread out evenly through the teams.
In terms of Jagr, hes done a ton for the Pens. I really never did understand the boo'ing, but to each their own.
How frickin' life-changing was the picture of Gary Roberts at age 16?
Then Steigy and Errey talk about his youthful escapades and something about playground bullying.
Gary probably took other kid's lunch money and used it to take out their Moms!
PS: I guess the VIAGRA signage on the boards at Scotiabank Place didn't help any Thenatorth get UP for the games at home?

I don't disagree at all, but it is hard to objectively evaluate given that we are obviously Pens fans and also that they played an opponent that had no interest in even showing up for most of the series. It will be very telling when we see how this team responds to adversity. I expect them to do well, but there is only one way to find out...
and hats off to Alfredsson ...playing with a fully torn MCL is just nuts......thats the definition of a true leader and a tough hockey player
