Blame It On The Renney

We'll be honest.

Even after learning we'd be playing the Rangers in the second round,
we still couldn't grasp the concept that it's the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
We were flat.

The Pens haven't played in a year, and it feels like Game One tonight
is nothing but a game after an Olympic break.

But then you see a picture like this.

And then it hits you that the pent-up frustration of Pens fans over Jagr's departure from Pittsburgh could not have a better climax.

Slowly, your hatred for Sean Avery seeps out of your body as you stare at a wall.

You remember that Sidney Crosby is on the biggest stage of his career.
You remember Marc-Andre Fleury is red-hot.
You remember when Dick Tarnstrom was the Pens leading scorer not to long ago.

It's probably hit you before you read this.

You rolled out of a bed, groggy from sleep,
and it hit you when you flipped the bathroom light on.

And your day got 100% better right there.

It's Game One of the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
We've missed this.

Remember fans, the Rangers are now the Devils. They trap till the cows come home and try to fast transition up ice when it's available. As much as I hate the Devils at least they tried to be more offensive this year. Most of these games will be nail biters unless we can get a lead. You almost have to play a patient game with these guys to win.

I believe we have more finishers and Gil will improve our chances against there bigger players like Jags. Take sedatives before the games or your skull may explode!!!

download and install winrar:

Download and install sopcast:

Scroll down and find downloads (its the very bottom)

Click the first link

Download and install VLC media player:

To watch a game:

Open and log in to sop cast. Don't worry, you can use the default guest.

go here:
click on the current day's hockey streams.

read the first post and find the game you want. games are streamed in a variety of different file types so not everything will use sopcast. I tend to find the ones that do since they tend to have the best picture.

Mute the player that starts up and hit the button on the bottom left of the screen that looks like two squares sitting on top of each other. This will launch in vlc media player (not always neccessary, but i do it anyway). Minimize sopcast, double click the VLC window to go full screen, and enjoy the game

Its a good idea to not do anything else online but watch the game.

As soon as I read Milli Vanilli, I got the image in my head of the heads of Sean Avery and Jaromir Jagr superimposed over the Milli Vanilli singers in that video for "Girl, I'm Gonna Miss You".

In fact, I can almost see Avery sitting by himself in that video singing that "Iiiit's aaaaaa tragedy for me to see, the dreeeeam is oooover" chorus.

I really need to stop drinking.

dying alive said...

Usually I'm pretty annoyed by the constant Jagr booing, but I'm actually kind of looking forward to it tonight.

I'm a little nervous, though. This is the first time all season that I'm not wearing any Pens gear to the game. I have nothing Pens in white aside from a jersey, and it's too hot for that. I don't want to have to put the free t-shirt on once I'm already at the game. I'm going with just a white hoodie and a white t-shirt. This is dangerous because, you know, the team's successes and failures hinge on my choice of wardrobe.

I liked Milli Vanilli. I have no dignity.

I remember Tom Renney very well from when he coached the Vancouver Canucks in 1996-97.

He had Alexander Mogilny at his disposal, still very much in his prime. He also had some kid named Pavel Bure coming back healthy from a knee injury suffered the previous year. Bure and Mogilny were playing together for the first time since they were embarrassing opponents as linemates on the Russian World Junior teams in the early 1990s. Canucks fans, of course, were pretty much salivating.

So how does Renney decide to utilize this wealth of speed and offensive talent? Of course, he employs the old left wing lock, which is basically one step removed from the old Devils' four-guys-at-the-blueline trap.

Bure and Mogilny played on a line together, so whichever one lined up at left wing played a primarily defensive role at their own blueline; the other forechecked. Two players who thrived on open ice and breakaways were used in a system that shortened the ice for one of them and forced the other into into a defensive roles.

That's what I call genius.

Needless to say, Vancouver missed the playoffs and Renney fueded - sometimes publicly - with players who couldn't understand why they were playing such a conservative system.

He's now doing the same thing with these Rangers - forcing some square pegs into round holes - and at some point, it's going to catch up with them. Hopefully, it's this series, when a team with the speed and quick transitions of the Pens throws it back in their face.

I wouldn't trust Tom Renney with making my cup of coffee, let alone coaching my hockey team.

Dying Alive --

Their fate does not hinge on your attire, but rather my attendance at the game. From 2002 - Nov 2007, the Pens did not win one game I attended. Granted, it's only 5(too far for a regular drive, especially as poor college student) or so a year, but still.

This year I actually got to see three wins.

I've turned down playoff tickets like 4 times already.

How do I break this curse?

I don't remember my first cassette tape. I definitely had Hysteria as well, though. I went through a period of time where I was heavily into hair metal, followed by a period where I was into old school "rap" acts like Wrex-n-Effex and Sir Mix-a-Lot. Of course, they weren't considered old school at the time.

By late high school Pearl Jam and Nirvana had become popular, so I was into grunge. Once college rolled around, I was into the typical mid-90s college radio bands like REM, Toad the Wet Sprocket, The Sundays, The Cure, etc. Nowadays I listen to mostly indie, but I still enjoy some of the stuff I liked in my youth.

This musical history of dying alive brought to you by the utter and total insanity that I am suffering right now waiting for tonight's game.

I have absolutely no idea what my first CD was. But Graceland was the first tape I purchased myself, and it is still one of the best albums ever recorded.

Stoosh, what bothers me to no end about coaches like Renney is that they're so fucking in love with their system that they try to jerry-rig every team they coach into it (*cough*Constantine). I can't think of a single instance where a system produced success for a club that had to fight their natural skill sets to play it. And what those trap-happy idiots don't seem to get is that Jersey didn't win Cups because they trapped, they won Cups because the trap was the right system for their personnel.

I was a child of the video music era, so my formative years were centered around the what was on MTV. In terms of rock, I was paritcular to Def Leppard and Bon Jovi. I paid attention to rap as much as any other suburbanite white kid did at the time - both the goofy stuff (Fat Boys, Fresh Prince, MC Hammer) and the more straight-laced stuff (Run DMC, LL Cool J). For some reason, I also really liked the oldies (stuff from the late 1950's through the 1960's) and I still do.

Sometime around 1988, I got hooked on Guns N' Roses. Not sure why; it was unlike anything I'd heard to that point (and at 13, it's not like I had a ton to compare it against). To this day, it remains one of the only bands I really ever followed religiously. I had the posters, a couple of t-shirts, watched the videos, bought the magazines and also a handful of bootlegs (Goldmine magazine was just that for this kind of stuff), and had the Illusions albums on reserve at one of the record stores probably three months before they came out. Slash and Izzy Stradlin were the reasons I went out and bought a guitar when I was 16.

With apologies to a few other classics, "Appetite", to me, is the gold standard for any modern-era hard rock album. As much as I wanted to like them, the "Illusions" albums were mostly disappointing.

I was wrapping up high school and just getting into college when the punk/grunge scene was in full swing, so I got into that a bit (more the punk end than the grunge). I never, ever got the allure of Nirvana, though; in fact, I sometimes wonder if they became bigger because Cobain decided to turn his head into a canoe.

In college, I got turned on to a bunch of stuff. I got into The Doors, a favorite band of my dad's during his high school days. I also got into some alternative stuff (Nine Inch Nails, the Prodigy - thanks to a college friend who was into techno). Blues Traveler, The Clarks, Chris Isaak, The Connells. Discovered Jimmy Buffett during this time as well, and he remains one of my favorites.

I listen to just about anything depends on my mood. I'm still heavy on the rock/alternative stuff, but I can listen to adult contemporary stuff just as easily as I can blast "Paradise City" out of my car speakers. A good song can really be found anywhere.

BlacknGold66 said...

Hip, the only Christmas music I play is that Vol. 1 CD. Drives my mother up a flippin' wall when I go home...not because she doesn't like it (it's her CD), but because she has a zillion Christmas albums and I always change them out for that one.

Seeker, I may have grown up in the cassette tape era, but in my house the vinyls were always a part of the scene. I live for my mom's old Smothers Brothers albums - you'd have no idea looking at the old pictuers of them how subversive they are.

@ Hip -

I thought it was awesome! :)

I'd love to see Avery take a dumbass penalty or three tonight and have the Pens score on every one of the ensuing powerplays, because then I'd be really interested to see what the real leaders of that team - Shanny, Drury - would do.

Rangers fans are already crying about the refs having it out for Avery, but how can they not when the assclown brings so much of it on himself AND does it with such a blatant disrespect of the game? I've seen him take checks and flop on the ice like he got hit with a rocket-propelled grenade. I've seen him hit opposing players from behind and then turtle when someone engaged him in a fight (ran Paul Kariya and then hid like a little kid when Hordichuk came after him). And if he's going out of his way to talk so much crap, sooner or later, it'll backfire.

Enough about Avery, though. He's the NHL's version of Dennis Rodman - a sideshow who already gets way more talk than his talent level dictates (actually, strike that...Rodman actually had talent).

I agree...the Pens need to come out flying, just like they did each night against Ottawa. I'm hoping to see Sid take the puck right at the Rangers defensemen and draw some penalties (the fact that it's Sid drawing the penalties will get in their heads).

The key for the Pens is to 1) get the first goal and force NY to play more in line with the Pens' style of play and 2) capitalize on early power plays. The quicker the Pens get a couple of goals on the board, the quicker the Rangers move away from that godawful trap.

M. Vanderlasser said...

Congratulations on scoring the ticket BNG66! Be sure to wave a lot; we'll watch for you. And wear a white shirt so that you stand out.

Oh, geez. Watched the "Spartans of Ottawa" clip...I really need something to cleanse my palate after!

Maybe I'll watch Sid's Gatorade commercial a few times.

I wonder if the pre-game spartan is back to his job at Chuck E. Cheese yet?

For Appetite for Destruction (and other 80s/90s metal) fans, "Fargo Rock City" by Chuck Klosterman is a must-read.

I've never actually been to champs so I can't comment on it. Damon's is awesome, you have to ask to be seated downstairs. That's where the gigantic projected screens are. Damon's at State College has like 9 of them so 1 or 2 will have the Pens. The booze is pretty expensive if i recall correctly. They usually have a cheap pitcher of something though, and that's all I need.

@ Pensgirl -

Damn right about Renney (and Constantine). There's a reason Constantine hasn't had an NHL coaching job since he left the Pens - pro players at this level don't want to be inundated with four-hour film sessions. They want to skate, especially a roster full of European skill players who grew up playing on larger ice surfaces with all sorts of space around them.

Back in the beginning of this year when the team was struggling a bit and the "Fire Therrien" talk started to increase, I heard someone at a game mention Constantine's name as a coach they should bring back. Other than Renney, is there another coach out there who would choke the life and creativity out of guys like Sid and Malkin like Constantine?

Don't get me wrong, I liked KC when he was here (hell of a nice guy, too). But a coach like that needs to be kept as far away from this team as possible.

I'm not complaining about anything Therrien's done at all, but can you imagine if Herbie Brooks coached this team? With their speed, ability to play a quick transition game and their up-front creativity, Herbie would be like a fat kid in a candy store with this Pens team.

I am very firm in my stance that the Use Your Illusions records are underrated, though not in appetite's class, and GNR could have been the next 'Stones (so-to- speak) were it not for Axel.
there were some great B-sides on those discs, plus "You could be mine" made it into the T2 soundtrack.

I saw Velvet Revolver when they were in town in '05, nothin' wrong with slash.

Still, I have more 'Dead bootlegs than anything else.

I bussed Marian Hossa's table the other night, he looked ready to record a hat-trick.

Stoosh brought up a great point earlier in c-blog. The key to beating any of these trapping teams like Boston, New Jersey, and now the Rangers is to score the first goal. Set the tone early and never let them get off the slush that will be the Mellon Arena Ice tonight.

Dave Gahan should thank me for the amount of DM music that I bought in the 90s.

First CD: The Beatles "Rubber Soul" when I was ten.

Since I'm going to be working tonight as costume crew for our production of Midsummer Night's Dream while simultaneously babysitting the director's two young daughters, I'm going to miss most of the game tonight. However, I'll have it on in the green room where I can check on it every so often. I'm sporting my WWGRD wristband, 66 Buries It undies, and am ready to go. Just in case we aren't pumped enough already for tonight, here is my adapted Henry V speech again (also in honor of Shakespeare's and Adam's birthdays).

"This game is called the game of Lord Stanley:
He that outlives this day, and wins the Cup,
Will stand a tip-toe when the day is named,
And rouse him at the name of Evgeni.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly in the Playoffs greet his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is the Final Game:'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars.
And say 'These wounds I had in Stanley’s game.'
Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember with advantages
What feats he did that day: then shall our names.
Familiar in his mouth as household words
Gary the king, Crosby and Malkin,
Fleury and Ruutu, Sykora and Laraque,
Be in their flowing cups freshly remember'd.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Penguins Dynasty shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remember'd;
We few, we happy few, we band of Penguins;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall bolster his condition:
And everyone not in Pittsburgh tonight
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold themselves in shame whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Lord Stanley’s day"

Gary bless us.

Parts of the Illusions albums were some instances even better than what was on Appetite.

For instance, "14 Years, "Bad Obsession", "You Could Be Mine", "Dust N' Bones", "Pretty Tied Up" and "Don't Cry" could've all fit right in on Appetite. There are some real rockers on there, and "Don't Cry" remains one of the best power ballads I've ever heard.

I think the problem with the Illusion albums was that too many things were tinkered with way too much. I didn't mind the keyboards, but the horns? Slash's guitars sounded different. Izzy's guitars sounded different when they could be heard in the first some of the songs his guitars were so muted, he might as well have not even been playing.

And the sheer volume of the thing was just too much to do at one time. They tried making too many statements - whether it was proof that they could do something big (November Rain, Coma), the political statements (Don't Damn Me, Garden of Eden), the lashing out at perceived critics (Get in the Ring, which I now pretend never happened). Plus all the grandiose was just too much.

They would've probably been better off putting some distance between the two albums.

Say one thing...It was the beginnings of Axl Rose's evolution (for better or worse) into a modern-day Brian Wilson. And the band was never the same after Stradlin left.

since we're talking music, one of the other loves of life:

Life changing CDs: weezer's blue album, Pearl Jam-Ten, 311's self-titled CD and, of course, Zeppelin's fourth album. All of these are represented on my body somewhere(except for 311) because of how life changing these artists are.

Dookie was a must have when it came out. That CD definitely ranks up there in terms of albums that changed music.

@ Stoosh:

What i like alot about The Illusions is that there is really no filler. I think most of those songs are pretty damn good songs. You listen to the Smashing Pumpkins double album and there are some real duds in there. But The Illusions are chock full of solid songs.

The downfall of GNR was with The Illusions, it seemed like the way they handled the releases and themselves- or honestly, just Axl, whatev- they made it clear they were trying to be bigger than the genre itself, if you understand what i mean, and it turned people off. It didn't hurt them as much as Axl going nuts and Nirvana's coming of age, but it still made GNR seem a little pretentious. I think if Axl would have been able to keep it together, they still would have hung, sales-wise, with the grunge crowd.

@ jyo: i do what i can.

great points, I'm right there with bad obsession, dust n' bones, and I like Coma. It was a very bi-polar production.
I also like don't damn me, The members complained they weren't just doing straight forward bad ass rock n roll anymore instead they went into the more orchestral, with backup singers and stuff...
Estranged is solid.

either more distance, or just one bad-ass album combining the best songs from I and II. perhaps two more thematically fluent albums.
They shot for Exile on Main Street and fell short.

the double live album was pretty sweet.

I think Rocket Queen is my favorite GNR track.

I just got a big-ass jolt of fired the hell up for this tonight.

It's slowly been building the last day or three and for some stupid reason, it just really hit me that we're playing the Rangers.

I can't stand the Rangers.

I can't stand Avery.

I can't stand the fans who think Avery actually brings something good to the game of hockey.

I can't stand Gomez and his unibrow.

I can't stand Rozsival. He was softer than ice cream on a summer day when he was here.

I can't stand their coach.

I can't stand their jerseys.

I can't stand their fans, most of whom dropped quicker than a 20-ton weight off their bandwagon when Neil Smith drove the team into the ground.

I can't stand the people who prop Madison Square Garden up as some hockey cathedral. It's a giant ash tray. The ice sucks and the sight lines are worse.

I can't stand the fact that if you can have a broken heart as a sports fan, they gave me one in 1994.

I can't stand that they still cling to Messier like he was a Ranger his whole career.

I can't stand the fact that their self-absorbed media thinks they're the epicenter of everything when it comes to sports.

I can't stand the fact that people thought the best place for Crosby would've been Madison Square Garden in a Rangers jersey.

I can't stand Richter. Or Beukeboom. Or Brian Leetch. Or Stephane F'ing Matteau. Or Adam Graves.

And you know what?

Under normal circumstances, I'd say I like Jags, Straka and Drury.

But this is the playoffs and they're playing for the f'ing Rangers.

So I can't stand Jagr. I can't stand Drury. And yes, I can't stand Marty Straka.

I can't stand the Rangers.
