He's B-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ack (GameDay)

Crosby returns tonight.
[PittsburghPenguins.com]

When the news broke, it made you think back to when sporadic news would surface when Lemieux was coming back from injury.

Thank God Charlie isn't around or else we couldn't post this pic:

Post any cool chats you know about in cblog.

Tampa Bay is awful.
But you know they will play out of their minds tonight.

This was just another jobber game until news broke shortly after 12:00 pm.

--A. Costa--

Pittsburgh Sports Insider broke the news first.
Have to say it -- [PSI] is quickly becoming the most reliable news source on the Internet.

They beat TSN to the punch. Almost unthinkable.

For those outside the viewing area...

This website seems to stream Penguin games.

Thanks to [ Brian D.] for sending it in.

We haven't tested it, but it looks legit.
Someone let us know.

Someone should photoshop Crosby's face onto the famous picture of Jack Nicholson in the shining and the caption should read, HERE'S CROSBY!

I Have Kasparaitis said...

I found out in my 8th period class that Sid's back!!!! I AM SO EXCITED!!!! He hates Tampa Bay so this is gonna be fun! I wish it was a home game because his fans could actually see him. I hate ESPN ... they are up Favre's ass. I like Favre and all but going back to high school and younger football footage of him is dumb. On the Hot List they talked about stupid NBA and MLB people. One time they mentioned Sid's name! You are not worthy.

How freakin' awesome are we gonna play tonight?!! We are gonna kill ... literally I think Sid might kill one player to seek out revenge.

I hear Hossa possibly on Thursday, but I want Roberts back too!

(If I spelled anything wrong, too bad! I'm too excited. Half the people at my school could careless and I need to talk to real fans!)

In Malkin I Will Always Trust. (still)

I Have Kasparaitis said...

Oh and welcome back, Whit! (Wow, I'm sure he feels insignificant to a certain friend of his ...)

Stoosh said...

Not sure if anyone rehashed this, but since the night we were told the world would allegedly stop spinning (aka, the night Sid got hurt), the Pens won 11 games, lost six in regulation and 4 in overtime/shootouts. That means out of a possible 42 points, the Pens took 26.

That's not bad at all, considering:

1. we all would've been thrilled to stupidity with .500 hockey, and

2. we were occassionally trotting out a power play unit that had three, sometimes four players who started the season in Wilkes-Barre.

And, oh yeah, we've taken over first in the conference.

In those 21 games, Malkin had 14 goals, 22 assists, 36 points, and was a +5.

Sakic19 said...

wasn't it against Tampa when he was hurt originally?

I Have Kasparaitis said...

Wow, I suck at grammar ...
Yeah, Sid got hurt against Tampa ...that's why I put he might be seeking revenge.

(Side note that is not as important as Sid the Kid: Forsberg is making his first start at 9, I think)

Stoosh said...

One other thing...

I know his primary focus is going to be winning games and making sure this team is ready for the playoffs...

...but because Sid's such a sick competitor, I'm sure he's already made it a little bit of a goal to try to catch Malkin in the scoring race. In fact, I'm sure Sid's already put some sort of friendly wager on it with Malkin.

I Have Kasparaitis said...

If that's true Stoosh, we can only imagine one of the most amazing end of the season games of our lives!

Pensgirl said...

Yes, sakic19, it was. I don't think it's a coincidence, either...Sid's notoriously superstitious. I wouldn't doubt that he chose this game because it bookends the injury with the same team.

Hopefully MT will roll his line as a second line for now and ease him back into top-line duty over the next couple games.

Of course, actually watching the game I'm probably going to be shouting "WHERE IS SID?!" every ten seconds. It's like an addict getting back on the juice....

Jonny V said...

So i'm at the school library, learning physical therapy modalities, when it just pops into my head to see what's up on here. Now i'm going to be itching to get out of class tonight to watch the game. Shitballs.

Nice homework on the summary of Sid's absence stoosh, puts things into perspective nicely.

And Vinnie seems cool, but Tim Benz reminds me of that Adam Sandler song, Steve Polychronopolous.

After watching Jagr-Lemieux-Francis and Straka-Lang-Kovalev put in time here and eventually go their separate ways, I wondered how long it would be until we saw something that potent back here in Pittsburgh. Mere days separate what is going to be pure dominance on ice. The years flew by, eh?

Let's travel back in time:
It's the 1992-93 season, Mario Lemieux is out 2 months undergoing radiation treatment for Hodgkin's disease & fell 12 points behind in the scoring race to Pat LaFontaine. He returns back on March 2, 1993 after his last treatment, flies to Philly to record 1 goal & 1 assist in a loss to the Flyers. The Pens fall 5-1 to the NYR on March 5th at the Garden...then, they rattle off 17consecutive Wins [2 of those in OT] from March 9 thru April 10 only to have an OT tie on April 14 versus the Devils to end the regular season and end their winning streak.

Mario came back and won the scoring race by 12 points: 69+91=160 in 60 games to LaFontaines 53+95=148 in 84 games in what can only be described as one of the Penguins' organizations greatest individual & team accomplishments in it's 40 year history.

Let's hope history can somewhat repeat itself this year: starting TONIGHT !!!!

MAF may get a 35 save shut out, but he is too off and on. Next game he will get bombed. You want consistency you with Conklin. You can doubt it all you want to but why was the "Flower" 9-8-1 before his injury? He can pull off 2 wins but I doubt he would be the reason "we go anywhere this year." Only place I see us going with MAF is an early exit in the play offs. Like Big Ben, OVERRATED.

JYo said...

Re: "You want consistency you with Conklin."

Since he gave up something like 10 goals in his last two games, I'll pass on keeping up that type of performance consistently, thank you very much.

j.s.22 said...

Did anybody catch on who the back up goalie was tonight?

JYo said...

@js22

According to NHL.com, Sabu was scratched and Conklin was active.

Ashley said...

MAF wasn't the only one responsible for the so-so start to the season - it was the whole team's fault. He started to get into his groove right around the same time he hurt his ankle.

I think anyone who gives up on MAF now is foolish. Sure, he's been in the NHL for a few years now, but I believe his development was stunted when the Pens threw him into the mix at 18 and didn't give him a goalie coach. Now that he has a goalie coach, he's slowly starting to get better with his rebounds.

MT has to keep playing MAF - maybe not exclusively, but MAF needs to see time in net.

Eric K said...

so that inconsistency i guess is why fleury has won his last 7 starts going back to before his injury. and has won back-to-back starts, making over 30 saves in each, with a shutout in the latter.
sounds pretty consistent to me, i duno.

not jobbing Conks because the issue of his consistency isn't even an issue. up until his last two starts he was playing out of his mind.

dont you think it's every coaches dream to have the 1-2 punch the Pens have right now with two hot goalies heading down the stretch.

on another note, how bout the play by talbot on Malkin's goal. just tapping it forward enough so it didnt cross the blue line for the hand pass. great heads up play by max.

Florida sucks. the state. and the teams.

Dave said...

Magic Number = 20 now

Ashley said...

Not to jinx anything, but just think...

What if Fleury stays hot and Conklin gets back on track?

What if the Malone-Malkin-Sykora line keeps scoring like no other?

What if the Crosby-Hossa line is a match made in hockey heaven?

What if the defense plays, well, defense?

.....How far can this team go?

coffeytalk said...

ashley had mentioned earlier that she kept seeing 87s. I've been stalked with 10s lately. Yesterday I woke up at 10:10am. Later that day I found a $10 dollar bill on the street. Today for the game I pulled the first pens shirt I saw out of my laundry pile and it was GR. I wore it to North Park Lounge to watch the game and then later spun their birthday wheel. ( i turned 24 yesterday) On the wheel I won a $10 gift card. Gary Roberts is EVERYWHERE.

Cripplr44 said...

See this is what I love about y'all. You praise Conklin and vote to keep him in net, and because he had 2 bad games and let us not forget those 2 weak goals MAF gave up, you are so quick to throw him under the bus. All I can say is wait and see. MAF will fail like he always does.

JYo said...

@eric k

Good point about not jobbing Conklin. I didn't mean to job him by pointing out his poor performance over the last few games either. I just wanted to say its not like we are supporting JS Aubin over Marty Brodeur here. MAF is still a young developing goalie with boatloads of talent. Conklin has been great, but we have been riding his absolute upper limit of ability. MAF can turn into a superstar, but it won't happen with him riding the pine. I agree that it is a great problem for HCMT and the team to have. Develop MAF as much as possible while having the luxury of playing either one to benefit the team in the short term.

Nathan said...

Holy Jebus, Tampa's color guy is a whiner. Guess he wasn't around the first time the Lightning sucked, but most announcers for shit teams suck it up and don't complain when calls and bounces don't go their team's way. Lange and Errey didn't bitch as much during the entire 2003-04 season as this guy did tonight.

How do you know if he'll fail in the postseason? He's been in the playoffs once as a pro and was one of the best Penguins in the ass-beating we received against Ottawa. And please, don't tell me about his stats in pee-wee hockey either, it's irrelevant.

@ jyo

agreed completely.

@ cripplr

who is throwing Conks under the bus? seems like everyone is in agreement that he has been outstanding, has just had it rough his last two starts. and he will win a huge game or games for us down the stretch without a doubt.

Dani said...

why do you swirl yellow towels and why are they terrible/yellow? and why isn't your goalie wearing his usual pads that look like penguin feet? i like that.

daismog said...

Coach Therrien loves his "rewards" system, and we should probably just expect to see him using it here.

When the goalie wins, he'll be in net again the next game, except probably in back-to-back starts. After a loss, we can expect a change.

Now, this is entirely conjecture on my part, but I would also expect him to rotate backups every game, just to keep Sabu from getting too rusty.

Keep throwing the 40 game win out there, all that means is that the offense AKA Crosby Malkin and Staal scored more then he gave up. I mean Staal did leave the game with some bruised ribs, but can't job him you know. I mean Staal did score over 30 goals last season. Oh wait what about this season? You can do more last season but what you do this season counts. You may think I am a joke after saying this but I do believe that MT shook Conklin's confidence when he pulled him after only 3 goals and then leaving him in for the Ottawa game. Don't want to put MAF up against the Sens he may freak again like in the play offs. Then you'd say they were saving him for Sunday's game. So no matter what you back the losing horse the Pens will pay, and pay dearly.

totally off topic, but I thinks it's a funny PB Charlie typo....

from Rotowire:
Mar 4
Tomas Plekanec (LW) MON
Plekanec scored two guys on Monday in a 6-4 loss to the Sharks. He's officially hot, scoring five goals in his last three games and notching points in each of the last three contests. This comes after a seven-game span of just one assist.

maybe Charlie took a quick flight to the Left Coast ?????

Here's to hoping that Staal recovers quickly.

Bruised ribs are super painful and usually kind of slow in healing.

Luckily, the Pens only committed one penalty 'cause he's needed on the PK unit.

crippler44 whatever, who are you friggin' Jerry O'Connell from Sliders? Can u predict the future? Do you know something we don't know? How Charlie are you to have such a hissy fit over which goalie is playing, when they're both playing well? Go sit in the corner until you're done moping.

It's pretty obvious what cripplr44 is trying to do, so please don't respond. I know taking contrarian viewpoints just for the sake of going against the grain is all the rage today...all the cool kids are doing it.

So if he wants to stir up crap just for the sake of stirring up crap, ignore his crap here; he can go get his attention elsewhere, maybe even create his own little anti-Pensblog and spew all the contrarian bullshit he wants.

Did anyone else get REALLY thrown off when Errey made some reference to Ouellet being a really hot player?

I actually had to call my friend to ask if I really heard that right.

If he's their lead man right now, no wonder Tampa is last :(

Ashley...I hope you are right about the #10...love to see him come back soon.

FLYER HATER - It's pointless arguing with that clown, but just for the sake of discussion, to me, it wasn't even that Fleury got his ass kicked in the playoffs.

In Game One, the entire team sucked. Anyone who puts that all on Fleury also probably puts all the blame for Minnesota's performance in Game Six of the 1990-91 Cup Finals entirely on Jon Casey.

He won Game Two in Ottawa by a score of 4-3. Winning a game like that in a place like Ottawa when most of the Pens core was just experiencing their second ever Stanley Cup playoff game was a solid accomplishment.

Game Three was a 4-2 loss at home. It was a bad loss - one in which MAF gave up three second-period goals - but not what I'd call an ass-kicking. It didn't help that the offense began to fade away at this point as well.

Game Four was a 2-1 loss at home. Far from an embarrassing loss.

Game Five was a 3-0 loss back in Ottawa. The Pens at that point were walking into a buzzsaw, knowing they had to win three in a row and two of them would have to be in Ottawa.

Experience was the overriding factor as to why this team failed against the Sens last year, followed by the lack of offense over the last three games and THEN perhaps the play of Fleury during the second periods of Games Three and Five (he gave up six goals total between the second periods of those games).

The entire team was gunshy in Game One. They rebounded nicely in Game Two and gave respectable efforts in the remaining three games. Ottawa was just too good and too deep.

That'll change this year. Fleury was rolling prior to his injury and he's been solid both in Wilkes-Barre and here since he came back. Having Conklin pushing him is probably a good thing, and the same is probably true for Conks...let these two bring out the best in each other.

Stoosh said...

KARRI - Thanks!

For what it's worth, I believe Roberts is on the trip and skating hard with the team during morning workouts. The doctors said he won't be back until late March, but I heard he was actually a bit ahead of schedule when he had the setback with the ankle. Either way, we're probably talking at most another three weeks. Kennedy can fill in until then.

Getting Roberts back will be nice if only to help add depth in case Staal's ribs bother him for any extended period of time. If Staal has to sit for a game or two, I would think Connor James might not want to get too comfortable back in Wilkes-Barre.

If you really want to know, here's the story of the Terrible Towel. "Yellow" = black and gold are the colors of Pittsburgh and the professional sports teams there. Fleury changed from yellow pads to white because he was told white makes it harder for shooters to score. I think even he misses the yellow, but he's doing pretty well with the white ones so far.

Oh, and if Sunday's game might have been given a little help from Myron Cope -

Tonight was one for the Badger.

Bob Johnson would've been 77 today, and the team he inspired kept Tortorella from passing him tonight for most wins by a US-born coach.

So happy birthday, Badger, here's to you. And - thanks.

completely off topic, but whatever

Did anyone see the Caps/Bruins game last night? I believe it was on Versus in the States...Anyways, I noticed that they kept saying "touchdown" during the broadcast. "Oh, they're up/down by a touchdown," and I think they said the word 'touchdown!' when someone scored a goal. It completely threw me off and I was just wondering if this is a common thing.

Is this how some broadcasters are trying to appeal to non-hockey fans?

To me, it just seemed like they got their sports mixed up and didn't know what they were talking about.

@ Ashley,

No, that's not common at all no matter where I've seen hockey games played in the USA.

Do you think they were playing word games since at the end of the 1st period the score was 6-0.....as in 6 points for a touchdown??

It's really hard to imagine even the worst American announcers being THAT stoned!!

seeker - I do think that they were playing word games or something, considering the score, but the whole thing just seemed stupid to me. As a hockey fan, I want to hear hockey talk, not football talk, during a hockey game.

Glad to hear that it's not common practice, though.

the PxP guy is the normal Caps PxP guy...so he probably had a chubber for most of the night with the Caps up/winning big..OV 'back into the 50's!!!' whatev that meant [as in 50 goals, i guess?]
unfortunately for them, it still only counted as 2 points and they're STILL out of the playoffs, even by winning by a touchdown & 2 point conversion [weak]

Just throwing the idea out. I could be totally off, but that's how I have my NHL08 set up. Except Kennedy is scratched and Roberts is in his spot.

Informative. I like the towel thing. We get yellow (gold) and white pom poms during the playoffs. I think we got shirts once during the Ottawa run. Well, they always shoot t shirts at us during regular games but thats just rude. Sabretooth does that sometimes too. He's a little agitator. Once he tried to pick pocket this fan! haha! I think I enjoy your cross eyed penguin as well. Sabretooth has a gaping mouth. It's cute.

Cripplr44 said...

When Staal comes back from the rib injury, he's going to be on fire, he did score 29 goals last season and 13 assists for 42 points! I guess his 9 goals 14 assists for 23 points this season is the teams fault too. Maybe next season MAF will be a 40 game winner again and Staal can break 30 goals in a season!
