GameDay (78) -- Islanders @ Pens

7:30

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

For the first time since high school in that weird kid's basement, you feel comfortable saying you want to smoke a Dubie tonight.

The Islanders squeaked into the playoffs last season on the last day.
That won't be happening this year.

**We had a photoshop of Guerin coming out of a storm cellar, but can't find it.*
Can somebody resend it?

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Finally, Crosby and Hossa will see time on the same line tonight.
It's been a long time coming.

The MAFer will be in goal tonight, although Ryan Whitney is probably his backup.

Coach Therrien can't hear Whitney or anyone else complaining about his coaching decisions.
He's too busy propelling the team into the top position in the East.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Guaranteed Victory

where the hell is chris e????

hossa. crosby. DO IT.

Flyer Hater said...

Maybe we can try Whitney on faceoffs, he can't be any worse than Staal.

Flyer Hater said...

My lord Steiggy quit trying so hard. Everytime he mentions the Malone-Malkin-Sykora line, he refers to it as the "steel-city line"

Uncle, Paul.

Let's do this shit!

4 minutes to spare chris e. well done.

GO PENS

JYO, in the previous post you said you weren't crazy about any of the Malkin line nicknames. Try this one on for size: the other day, someone mentioned that 71+17+12 = 100 and suggested the Centennial Line...which I thought was pretty decent, but the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the math was The One Hundred. No "line" in the name. I'd been calling them the Glasnost Line before that but I like The One Hundred better.

J.S. said...

fuck, somebody tell me Hossa isn't injured again.

please tell me it wasn't that cheap puke Dick Hunter....I mean Trent Hunter.

IndianaJohns04 said...

damn.

Christina said...

oh thank god - hossa's back on the bench.

JYo said...

The One Hundred isn't too bad pensgirl. I don't know how it would flow in speech, you might need to call them 'The One Hundred line', but either way, I could live with that one. At least it seems a bit more creative. It could make for a pretty sweet poster too, maybe a play on a '300' movie poster...someone more skilled with photoshop than I should have a crack at that one.

Mike Lange tells me Ruuuuuuuuu smoked a Doobie like a bad cigar!!!! Ru's back must really be hurtin' now from carrying this team!

It is now in the second period 2-1 Pens...I have been very tough on the Pens this season, and on Hossa in particular but I have seen a team grow in just a period and a half...when you see guys who don't normally fight throw down, like Sykora in defense of a teammate, you cannot underestimate the heart of this team...when they put it all together this could be the Oilers of the new mellenium...

The Seeker said...

I wonder if Ruutu is starting to get tired of having to carrying this team all year?

Flyer Hater said...

Seriously how many of yinz registered suicideblog.blogspot.com when Hossa was limping down the runway?

Does it even seem that Crosby has missed any time?

Raybin said...

I don't know who in the NHL sent out the memo to call penalties on Ruutu for no reason whenever he steps on the ice, but I suspect he has routine backseat meetings with Daniel Alfredsson.

Flyer Hater said...

It's really great to see our "enforcer" Georges Laraque go after that piece of shit Davidson after kneeing Hossa. This is why he doesn't deserve to be in the lineup.

Raybin said...

You read my mind flyer hater re: Georges/Davison.

Laraque's just seemed, so....passive.

JYo said...

I agree about BGL. If the other team takes these types of liberties with the Pens stars and he does nothing, what is the point of him being active?

jimmymo32 said...

the islanders r jokes...

so is laraques.. he does jack shit for this team

jimmymo32 said...

also.. it would be really cool if the pens would shoot on the powerplay...

JYo said...

BGL says screw fighting, he's gunning for Hossa's spot along side Sid. Of course, now Ru is a play maker as well as a sniper. This is the kind of play the role players will need to bring for the team to be successful in the playoffs. Good stuff.

Pensgirl said...

Holy crap, BGL heard we were puttin' him down.

Double holy crap, RUUUUUUU has three points tonight. #1starblog

blackngold66 said...

Hopefully that goal by BGL shuts some of the cry babies up for a bit.

JYo said...

BNG66, its nice to see BGL get one, but we all know what his role on this team is and he hasn't been performing it. If he doesn't act as an enforcer, he is worthless to this squad. I think he can, but he needs to be more active in that role when the situation calls for it, like the other team takes cheap shots at our starts like Hossa. I like BGL and think the team should keep him, but he needs to know his role and fulfill it.

JYo said...

make that "stars" like Hossa, not "starts", but you get the point...

pops said...

how serious is this hossa injury? anything to worry about?

mr. glass, geez.

letsgopsu said...

hopefully hossa is gonna be fine, but how about fleury trying to score, how sweet would that have been had he not hit orpik's rear

blackngold66 said...

I dunno... Pens could be winning 23-0 (or could be fighting for 1st in the East, ahem) and some people will still find something to complain about.

It's a total buzzkill.

The Seeker said...

Points Race Update:

Washington wins, but Ovechjoke goes without a point

Malkin 103

Ovechkin 107

Flyer Hater said...

Yeah B&G66, BGL scoring his first goal in about 40 games really makes up for not going after a guy that's trying to take our superstars. Please don't give me that argument.

Flyer Hater said...

Picture: Ted Nolan reacts to the tough loss of the game and his lands.

pops said...

can someone post an update on hossa once something definite is known? thanks

DeCeV said...

I hope Hossa is ok. For now we can enjoy firstplaceblog at least for a night.

btw Atlantic magic number = 5

The Seeker said...

I don't think Davison "kneed" Hossa.

He hit him kind of low (hip-on-thigh) like a Kasper-style hit...but it wasn't what I'd call a deliberate cheap shot.

The 2nd hit on Hossa might have been more questionable but it's hard to say if he saw him and if he tried to pull-up.

But why attack fellow Pens fans here? No one's opinion is any better than the next guy's.

blackngold66 said...

Flyer Hater:

You clearly missed the point.

All I'm saying is that some people will always find something or someone to gripe about.

I'm more of a believer in focusing on the positives as opposed to trying to pick apart the guys that are slumping.

But if people wanna bitch they have the right.

I just think it totally kills the mood, especially given what we are all witnessing with this team this year.

pops said...

decev,

i think the magic # might be 3. at least thats what lange said. (combination of our win and devils loss)

If Hossa does have to miss a game, guess who will be recalled???

CCCCCOOOONNNNNOOOOOOORRRR JJJJJJAAAAAMMMMMMEEESSS!!!!

He gets called for emergency reasons more than 911!

Dr. Turkleton said...

the magic # went from 9 down to 5 with the Pens - W & NJs - L.....

my .02¢ on the use of BGL...his playing time in the playoffs is going to be determined by:
• who the Pens are playing
• who's in the opponents lineup
• how the pens are doing during the series

if he dresses & ends up hardly playing but 2/3 shifts a playoff game, that's a waste...there are plently of 'fighters' on the team minus BGL & besides that, there is hardly any fighting during the playoffs anyways...

using Whit as a swing Wing / D-man is okay with me...I think he played a physical game [compared to the way he usually plays D]...playing on the 3rd line I thought was a bit of a stretch, but he's not the 1st one to do this: Schubert in OTT, Burns in MIN last year, Byfuglien in CHI is a natural D-man playing recently on their top line.

Did they show the 'movie stars' on tv?...
they were filming all game right by the penalty box [on the pens side]...
they got pumped up during the little 'fight' sequence when hossa was nose down on the ice...
the even participated in the 'wave' [yawn]
the guy co-star[?] wore a BNG Lemieux throw-back jersey & the guy star[???]wore a new rbk #34 jersey, but couldn't read the name on his back...the blondie looked cute. [reporting for TMZ, this is dr. turk]

Eric K said...

@ dr. turk

they didn't show the stars on TV, just the camera man

- I'd take Ruutu on a breakaway in OT of Game 7 over Crosby any day of the week and twice on Sunday
-How disgusting is this injury business getting? Soon as 1 guy comes back, another 1 goes down. And it's never a Sydor or Whitney or Kennedy, it's our big gunners.
-The PP looked out of place tonight. Why take Malkin off his spot on the right side just b/c Sid comes back??
-Dubie's reaction after BGL's goal= "fuck Georges Laraque just beat me top shelf"
-4 games left, WTF?
-MAF is definitley on top of his game. He hasn't been giving up the juicy rebounds, alot better control directing the puck to the corners or far boards.
-Richard Park can blow me.

RUUUUUUUTUUUUUU

Interesting night all around in the east

Boston, Washington, Buffalo stay alive.
Toronto and Florida are cooked.

The Rangers take down Dirty Jerz.. and Ottawa loses in O/T.. How will 4-7 seed end up being at the end of the season? Who knows.

The Seeker said...

I'm not sure I grasp the reasoning behind scratching Taffe while dressing Whitney as a forward???

Steigy was worried if it was insulting for Whitney, but how would you feel if you were Taffe?

Dr. Turkleton said...

@brett

agreed.

but, why stop at 4-7...more like 4-10...glad were not like the Craps & Slugs needing Wins + help just to get in The Big Show.

stokes said...

@ Eric K:

I disagree with the PP statement. I actually liked what i saw. they moved the puck well, and while they didnt get a whole bunch of looks as a unit, and didnt get many shots off, i liked having Geno on the point, because he can play reasonable defense and has a better shot that Whitney(not a dig on Whitney). That gives you Sid, The Hoss, Malone, Gonch and Geno on one power play. I'll take my chances with that.

I wouldn't mind seeing two strong power plays as well, but the afore-mentioned power play line could be like a super power play with some time....

Well tonight wasn't as Hossome as i hoped it would be, but a win is a win.

Go Pens.

Dr. Turkleton said...

@seeker

HCMT just resting Taffe for the playoffs...+ he's hoping Whitney gets steamrolled while playing FWD...then, the Whit talk will be done for this season.

that 'Sid only dressing to be in the movie line' in the previous cBlog = classic.

BTW...those looking for a different place to eat on gameday:a new place just opened: The Red Ring up on the Bluff[I think that's what that area is called] at Duquesne U.

Good Food
Reasonable Prices [8.95 for burger+fries]
One drawback for some = no alcohol license yet...

It's located on the ground floor of that Brand Spankin' New building on Forbes Ave. with a Starbucks/Barnes & Noble & Juice Bar place, as well. [for the Frugal Gourmet Magazine, I'm dr. turk]

I think Bob Errey just insulted Kaspar! (and therefore me in return) Kaspar could be an ass at times, but he was like a defensive Ruutu and messed with people and their linemates. Errey showing some held in resentment got me a little angry. I guess it's hard to get rid of Kasparaitis.

Great game tonight, but Hossa getting hurt ticks me off. We just got Sid back, and you asses aren't even close to playoffs! I'm calling for the heads of a few Islanders (and surprisingly one of them isn't Witt ...)

Crosby looks like he has been playing all season. When he did play with Hossa and Dupuis, they looked fantastic together.

BGL is trying to shut us up over at C-Blog it seems ... we still should keep him in for the Flyers games though, just in case he decides to finally get violent. I love Taffe, maybe Sunday for him?

How hilarious was the mentioning of Sudden Death? I started laughing so hard, and I got a weird look from my mom who thinks that the Islanders "still have their pride." Haha, not really. Anyways, I love how Steiggy said the best part of the movie was Iceburgh fighting. Way to get a head, Pensblog Staff, and posting the fight before any of us knew it was gonna be talked about.

Loved c-blog talking about Ruutu caring the team on his back!

In Malkin (and Malone) I Still Trust!

Eric K said...

@ kaspar

i lost it during that Steigy comment about Sudden Death too.

@stokes

i do agree that when you have the massive amount of talent with the likes of Sid-Geno-Hossa-Gonch-Malone on the PP, how can you not take your chances? I just didn't like the move to take Geno off the right side where he's been tearing it up in Crosby's absence. Malkin is good defensively, but if i remember right- Hossa did play some point on the PP with ATL, so maybe he gets a shot back on the point with us? We'll have to see how it turns out. One thing is for sure, the PP probably won't look the same in consecutive games knowing MT.

Isn't it great to know that the Pens could potentially eliminate the Flyers from playoff contention next week?

Nathan said...

Steigy shouldn't be so down on his role in Sudden Death. After all, he got to say "Holy Shit" when they blew up the scoreboard.

And of course, the best line in the movie:

"Mister Icy's a woman, jackass!"

I swear, every time I see that movie on when I'm channel surfing, I stop and watch it. It's a horrible movie, but strangely compelling. And the hockey scenes are reasonably good, even with ECHLers in the uniforms -- hell, filming that movie was the closest any of those guys ever got to the NHL, unless Neil Little and his future two games with the Flyers was involved in the filming (Little played in 16 games for Johnstown that season).

woow, Ruu beats a shutout and 2 big Joe Thornton goals to get First Star of the Night. Guess being Jarkko Ruutu isn't always? counted as a handicap?
