GameDay (77) -- Pens @ Devils

7:00
boobs

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

In what is probably the biggest game since Saturday,
The Pens head to New Jersey for a HUGE battle with the Devils.

HUGE.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Random Pens fan:
Hey, Dupuis, you don't need to still be with your wife, joke!
We have to win this game against the Devils!!!1!!1

Dupuis:
Wow, maybe the Pens shouldn't have blown that game against the Avalanche earlier this season, or maybe they should have actually tried to play hockey against San Jose.
You wouldn't need these points now.

plow

Pascal Dupuis is still with his wife down in Atlanta, spending time with his newborn child.

Having him and Sid out of the lineup really taints the confidence factor you would have
going into a huge tilt against New Jersey.

But it's still huge.

And, honestly, if you want a barometer on where MAF currently is situated
among NHL elite goaltenders, tonight is the night.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

OUR VERY OWN CALL TO ARMS

We're sending out that post we did on how much of a bargain Sykora was,
to every news source imaginable.

We've never done that, but it has to come to light,
since most news sources can't even get something as simple as last year's playoff season correct.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Speaking of which...

The e-mails came pouring in this afternoon (all 5 of them) that our buddy Ross McKeon over at [ Yahoo NHL ] crapped the bed.

In his synopsis on why the Penguins are currently 5th in his power rankings, he had this to say:

The Penguins got a taste of success not only getting into the playoffs last spring but winning a round, too. Reality set in during a second-round blowout. The experience is valuable, and with another year of maturity for the young stars, the possibility of winning the East is there.

We got to the second round with your daughter.

We had to backtrack and figure out why we like jobbing this guy.
He's just there, a guy who worked up the ranks to earn a living writing about hockey.
We liked him earlier in the year because he kept knocking out great columns.

But it turned sour when, on one fateful day, he penned a column about which city
is most deserving of the "HockeyTown" moniker instead of Detroit.
And he didn't mention Pittsburgh.

And then he probably ranked the Pens too low in his Power Rankings
on the same day someone high-fived us with a fistful of turd.
And the rest was history.

Speaking of being history...

The Pens aren't in the playoffs yet.

(To the tune of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia by Charlie Daniels Band)

Well the Pens went over to Jersey
They were lookin' for some points to steal
They were in a bind, 3 points behind
And willin' to make a deal
They came upon this old man
Playin' goalie, and playin' it hot
So Geno jumped up on a hickory stump
Said, Matry lemme tell you what
"I'm sure you already knew it
'Cause I'm a hockey player too
And if you care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you
Now you play pretty good hockey, boy
But give the Penguins their due
I'll bet a Zach Parise goal
Against your soul
Just to think we're better than you"
Then a boy said, "my name's Fleury
And it might be a sin
But I'll take your bet
And you're gonna regret
'Cause tonight, the Pens will win"

So Mikey rousin' up your bench
And change those 4 lines hard
'Cause hell's broke loose in Jersey
And Jarkko's killin' retards
And if you win, you're closer to that banner in black and gold
But if you lose, the Devils have control

The Devils opened up the gate and said "We'll start this show"
Then Elias flew in on a breakaway, but yeah, he still blows
He pulled the puck across the ice and it made an evil hiss
Then all 12 fans joined in and it sounded somethin' like this
(Silence overtakes the microphone)
When the Devils finished, Georges said "well you're pretty good 'ol sons"
"But if you drop the gloves with me, you'd be better off to run"

Fire at The Rock, run boys, run
Look, it's Marty's illegitimate son
Chickens in the locker room, pickin' their toes
Hey we got a powerplay, Go Sarge Go

The Devils bowed their heads because they knew that they'd been beat
Then they layed that playoff berth on the ground at Hal Gill's feet
Hossa said "Devils just come on back if you ever wanna try again"
"I done told you once, you sons of a bitch, the dominance never ends"

Fire at The Rock, run boys, run
Look, it's Marty's illegitimate son
Chickens in the locker room, pickin' their toes
Like they say in Canada, "GO PENS GO"

Wasn't it the Devils that got out of the first round then got spanked in the second round? How the hell do you blow that kind of thing if you're being paid actual money to write about a sport? I mean, you wouldn't see ANY football writers saying that the Steelers won their first-round playoff game last year before getting destroyed by the Patriots.

Then again, it is the American sports media, where the NHL is an afterthought at best (and for the worst, just Google "Hockey Punch Player"). We should just get Don Cherry down here so his geriatric ass could beat some actual knowledge about the sport into Mr. McKeon. And then if Cherry had a heart attack in the process, we'd all win.

Need a big bounce-back game tonight. Let's go Pens.

I don't understand why he wouldn't think Pittsburgh is a hockeytown? Maybe not THE town (of course I'd say buffalo-top 2), but if your fans convinced people to rebuild a new arena and let the pens stay in Pittsburgh... I think it may speak volume for how far you've come. Honestly, look at this blog, yeah?

That's brutal. Just brutal.

Raybin said...

Y'all read my mind about tonight being a real test of where you can rank Fleury.

Actually, make that the whole team. Someone (flyer hater? too lazy to go look) mentioned in the other thread to say if the fanbase has a collective panic attack over last night's debacle, how will we handle a brutal double OT loss during the playoffs?

An excellent question and tonight will go a long way toward answering it for the team as a whole, not just some easily spooked fans.

homesprout said...

Hmmm...I wonder if MT will dress 7 D and juggle the lines tonight!? :-D

Go Pens!!

coffeytalk said...

I'm ready. I've stayed away from the blog since after the game last night because of my fury and frustration with how the boys played. Also, win or lose watching a game on Versus makes me a miserable person to begin with. I wrote a list during the game of reasons why I hate Versus. I'll post that later. But now, time to concentrate on a few beers and hopefully a fantastic night of hockey.

It is game number 77, hopefully that number will bring some luck.

James was recalled today...maybe foreshadowing one of the D-men being scratched. If it's not Witney or Sydor, well..someone keep an eye on Elmo.

Ross McKeon=stunned

If you think that last night's loss produced overreactions from the yinzers out there, you wait and see what will happen if we lose tonight. I can already see the threads.

"Crosby is tanking and just wants to collect a paycheck"

"Fleury shows no heart or fire, maybe we could get Patrick Roy's son"

"Colby Armstrong would have scored 5 goals, 7 different ways tonight (yea, he's that good)"

"Malkin=heartless russian"

"Pens won't make the playoffs"

"I don't want to see this team win another game"

"Where's the bridge?"

"We should have signed Briere in the offseason"

"Where's Joe Melichar now?"

"Barrasso, best shape of his life?"

Eric K said...

@ flyerhater

how bout the apparent contradictions to the obvious such as:

"Brodeur always dominates the Penguins"

"Malkin doesn't want to win the scoring title"

"Laraque is the only guy who hits"

"Rob Scuderi should have stayed injured, he sucks, they never even mention his name"

"Conklin looked good last night, he shoulda played again"

"Steigy is a great announcer" (well i just threw that one in for my own purposes)

The Big K said...

@Eric

That song was brilliant. Had several LOLs.

At least we won't have to worry about crowd noise being a factor tonight. Maybe they can mic the crickets...

Sakic19 said...

How did Mckeon screw up that bad...he sounds like a Flyers fan, or maybe he spends alot of time gambling with Jagr and Gretzky's wife...

Nathan said...

Oh, I'm sure Barrasso's in just as good a shape as he always is. He just won't tell you.

I still find it laughable that with his record that an actual NHL team hired him as a goalie coach. We all know the great job he did with Patrick Lalime. I'll always appreciate what Barrasso did for this team on the ice, but I'm really glad that he was long gone when the Pens drafted MAF. It's a wonder Barrasso hasn't tried to destroy the other former goalies in that organization, although if Tripp Tracy ends up dumped in a bloody heap on Jim Rutherford's doorstep, we'll know who to look for.

Wouldn't it be great if Steigy was going for a pre-game talk to Hossa and Hossa just goes all Open Range on him...

Maybe we can send him and Hossa to Atlanta and get Army and Crusher back to satisfy the Yinzers. Army and Crusher could score as much as these bums and they obviously can make plays and backcheck, so whats the difference??? It should also free up some cap space to bring back 66 in the best shape of his life to open up the new arena!!!

Thoughts, dudes...

1. Celebratory beer!

2. Now let's get to work on locking up that division, and helping our resident Isles fans get one step closer to Steve Stamkos Thursday night.

3. Hossa is friggin' sick with the puck. I don't care that he's not finding the net as much as we'd hoped he would at this point. Hossa is too good a player...that part of his game will come around. He does some very good things controlling the puck; he backchecks like a maniac and his positioning away from the play always seems to be solid.

4. I've heard some national media types mention that the Pens should explore trading Malkin this summer because there's a chance that he could command more money than Crosby.

That's insanity.

With the exception of a certain team who tries to trap you to death, teams that win Stanley Cups typically do so because they showcase two top-flight centers on their roster. Colorado had Sakic and Forsberg. Detroit had Stevie Y and Feds. Dallas had Modano and Nieuwendyk. Pittsburgh had Mario and Saint Ron.

The formula works. There's no reason why Shero should ever entertain the thought of trading Sid and Malkin. The players around them can occassionally be shuffled in and out because as Buccigross said in his column today on ESPN.com, Sid and Geno can get solid above-average production out of slightly above-average players. Sid and Malkin should be Pens for the vast majority of their careers.

5. I'd be interested to see what that cripplr44 clown has to say about Fleury's last several games. According to him, Fleury wasn't supposed to be capable of carrying this team.

6. I never thought I'd say this, but Gonchar has become a bit of a nasty presence in front of the net. What a difference he's been since that first year here.

7. Ottawa can't feel comfortable with Gerber and Emery in net. I know they won tonight, but their goaltending is less stable than Brittany Spears right now.

Turk, Letang barely touched Asham and definitely didn't push him. Even the Devils' announcers admitted that the goal should have been waived off. I don't know what FSN showed, but MSG showed a couple of angles confirming that Letang was definitely not involved.

Stoosh, haven't read Bucci today but if he's talking about Sid and Geno long-term then he's done a 180 since last week, when he himself proposed trading Malkin. I almost choked on air when I read that column.

Eric K said...

Back-to-back playoff berths, damn does that feel good.

Imagine, if and when, by his 5th season in the league Staal becomes the type of force that Malone has become this season. he needs to put on a few pounds and get tougher around the net, but that will all come with experience. we've all seen how much his defensive game has improved since last season...

Hossa is definitley a force on the backcheck and handles the puck Crosby-like, however, is it just me or does he seem hesitant to shoot the puck? There was alot of talk about him loving to put pucks on net in any situation, but he hasn't really showed it with the Pens yet. Is he waiting for Sid, or still trying to find his place in the system?

Georges Laraque continues to disappoint more with each shift.

Thursday is Robert's initial target date for a return, tho i did hear he had another setback...will we ever have a full roster this season??

Gill and Letang were just lights out tonight, and i agree w/Stoosh about Gonch stepping up his physical play around the net lately.

MAF is definitley back, and it's great to see.

Any doubt as to who the number 1 goaltender is now?

In a small way, Fleury came off age in this game. This was as close to a playoff type game as you can get in the regular season and he absolutely shined. I mean the one save where he got the arm up on the re-direction in front of the net was great and the stop he had against Langenbrunner where he got over to the other post in a nano-second was great. He's not giving up any rebounds either.

Another thing about his game that has impressed me, Fleury is really handling the puck well. He's not making the fancy play, but he is moving the puck along and the breakout is smooth.

David Copperfield=stunned

PLAYOFFS BABY!

Flyer Hater said...

Also, how sick is Hossa. I mean who scores top-shelf into an empty net?

Flyer Hater said...

Remember that game at home against New Jersey back in like November, and the Pens got jobbed out of like 3 goals? Well one of those was a blatant goaltender interference by Brian Gionta on Fleury and it wasn't called and the we lost by 1. Karmablog, bitches.

PENSGIRL -

Bucci clears up the Malkin conundrum a bit more this week, and also elaborates a bit on the long-term futures of Malone, Fleury and Staal...even guys like Sykora and Dupuis to a lesser extent. Pretty interesting read.

I'm still under the impression that they can sign Malkin AND Hossa, and still avoid being "Tampa North" because they'll be able to fill out the rest of the top two lines with lower-cost, effective guys like Sykora, Dupuis, Staal and possibly Malone. They've got a nice balance of contracts on the blueline with Gonchar still on for two more years, Whitney locked up, Gill on board for next year and Letang and Goligoski still a ways away from big paydays. There's four deep right there. Maybe Orpik leaves, but a relatively lower-cost replacement can be found there. Fleury will also be reasonable...nothing that should prevent them from signing Hossa.

I'm encouraged...let's put it that way.
