GameDay (67) -- Thrashers @ Pens

3:00

The short-awaited, much-anticipated matchup.

Hossa's out. Dupuis is in.
Armstrong is in. Christensen is in.

And how about poor Mark Recchi?
His return to the Penguin faithful may be overshadowed by Colby's.

But, of course, center stage on Sunday will be the Terrible Towels saluting Myron Cope,
which spells doom for the Penguins.

Terrible Towels in Pittsburgh on Sunday = Defeat

Even more on the line.
The Devils lost to the Canadians.
Pens can move into first in the Atlantic Division.

But it is still way too early for that talk.

.................................................................................................................

The new AL Motors commercials is out.
Have you seen it?

Thanks to Phill Q. for sending it in.

Good stuff.

..................................................

Kipper sends along a new fan forum on the scene:

[ The Pens Forum ]

.....................................................................................

NHL Shop faithful received an e-mail from the NHL Shop early Thursday morning:

Sadly, people who want to only rent this jersey are out of luck.
woooo

...............................................................

NHL

Ryan Smyth got destroyed by Jack Johnson from L.A.

Ouch.

..................................

We do have some sad news to relay.

We approached Pensblog Charlie this week with the news that Marian Hossa was gonna be taking his spot in Flashblog.
Coupled with the trade deadline and the playoff race, Charlie has been very hormonal.
He did not take the news lightly.

We haven't heard from him in days...

We received an unmarked postcard from Fort Hancock, Texas.

That's where Charlie crossed.

When we picture Pensblog Charlie heading south, in his own car, top down...
It always makes us laugh.

Pensblog Charlie, who crawled through a river of poop,
and came out just as gay as ever on the other side.

Pensblog Charlie...headed for the Pacific...

Go Pens

HACKSAW JIM DUGGAN! I must admit, when you said that you came upon a site with old wrestling pictures on it, I couldn't wait for one of him. Stoked.

I am no longer going to rush tomorrow due to not having a ride, but I will still enjoy it on TV. Should be a good and emotional game both with the players and the Terrible Towels.

Tried out gamedaychat for the first time today. I may try it again if I get a chance for this game. Maybe I'll actually say something this time.

Let's Go Pens.

today's game will either be a well fought win or a terrible loss with all the players tired out from yesterday.

either way, no big deal.

Ashley said...

I got one of those "buy Hossa's new jersey" emails too and thought the same thing. I'd rather stick with my Crosby sweater anyways. :)

Phill Q - great commercial haha

HOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Wonder if the Terrible Towels will finally get this crowd rowdy? And will adrienne's head explode today from seeing all of them at the game?

Big game today.

Something that may help ease the minds of Penguins faithful when it comes to extending Bib Poppa Pump. We've got an owner who sounds like he wants to open up the piggy bank.

If you want to know why the Pens sold off their star players in the ealier part of this decade, Ron Burkle was a big reason why. The NHL business model pre-lockout was a losing proposition, and no businessman - especially one worth billions - is going to sink money into something knowing he's just going to lose more money. That's not how Burkle became a billionaire. The Pens weren't being cheap and they weren't being greedy. Any businessman worth his salt isn't going throw money into a bad business model like the one the NHL had prior to the lockout.

They KNEW the lockout was coming long before people were talking about it, and they knew a new, more sensible economic model would come to exist in the NHL as a result. The lockout was the first shoe to drop. The second came with the new arena last year.

The Pens are making money NOW; they're brining in a profit NOW. They've got control of almost all the revenue streams at Mellon for hockey and non-hockey events and they'll retain that control at the new digs. That's a huge extra money-maker for this organization.

THIS is why Burkle is opening up the pocketbooks. He's now getting a return on his investment. It's now good business to sink money into this team.

BEAUTYYYYYYYY!

Has anyone seen these at PenStation?

That wrestling website..it's ..sniff.. wonderful!
With one picture, you wiped everything else that I had just read. Who are we playing again?

Come on now, be fair. Terrible Towels in Pittsburgh on Sunday only mean defeat if it's the playoffs. The Steelers are generally quite good at home during the regular season.

My wife pointed out the Francis shirt in the NHL catalog that came earlier this week. One of those will end up in my possession at some point -- I'm someone who's got a Ron Francis Leafs jersey as well as a pair of Francis Hurricanes jerseys. So there.

Phill Q - the credits were hilarious.

HIP - Thanks!

Yinzer Nation drives me crazy. It's the one thing I hate about the Pittsburgh fan base. Thankfully, most of Yinzer Nation seems to be a little subculture of Stiller Nation and they haven't quite found their way into the Pens fanbase...not yet. And the ones that seem to make their way to the Pens fanbase will undoubtedly turn tail and run back to the comfort of Heinz Field as soon as the Pens have a bad year.

You know the type. Heavy Pittsburgh accent is a must. They can usually be found in the parking lots of Heinz Field on eight random Sundays between the months of September and December. Generally found to be wearing a Steeler jersey - often a Terry Bradshaw #12, a Franco Harris #32 or a Jack Lambert #58. Usually seen with one hand occupied by an Iron City beer can. Spends most of their time either pining about the 1970s or trying to pick fights with fans wearing opposing team's jersey (as was the asshat who I had the misfortune of tailgating next to at the Steelers-49ers game this past year. He decided to show off for the young ladies next to us by trying to pick fights with a 49ers fan waiting in line for a port-a-john). They also command an incredibly limited understanding of the game they're watching, be it football, baseball or hockey.

Jonny V said...

Stoosh, I read on yahoosports some lady's take on the NHL trades this week, and she thought it was a mistake to make the trade for Hossa this year only to have him leave after the season and then we'd not have anything worth trading should the situation present itself in the next couple of years. The article u linked to just goes to show that there are higher forces at work here.

In Shero (and Burkle) we trust.

Dr. Turkleton said...

will be attending today's game -
will NOT be taking my towel

I feel sad for Myron passing away...I remember many evening dinners as a kid listening to his sports show on the radio...esp. those Monday, Warsh-Day Hotline & seeing him on TV as Doctor Cope with his Cope-Ra-Scope...hum-HAA !!!!!

BUT, the Mellon Arena and specifically a Penguins game is not where I'm going to pay tribute to him...I will stand, I will applaud, I will give silence & remembrance if that's what they ask...but I keep thinking to myself: 'Would Stiller Nation act/do the same thing if Mike Lange passed away during the Stiller Season?'...I say, they would not.
The Penguin organization is, IMO a classy bunch for doing what they're doing. They may play 2nd fiddle to the North Shore bunch, but will always be #1, in my book. I just choose not to participate by bringing a Stiller symbol to a Penguins game.

BTW, anyone see Seth Meyer on SNL whip out a Terrible Towel at the end of his Saturday Night Live News???...it was only like 2 seconds or so, as he grabbed it from beneath his desk & started waving it as Amy Pohler (sp?) was signing off...

Watched some of the ATL Thrash game yesterday & Army got racked into the boards/glass late in the game & appeared to injure his head/neck or beak...don't remember seeing him much after that...but, knowing how Army is, he'd probably rather play on broken legs than miss this game this afternoon...

Man, I wish I could score a Penguins Mr. Potato Head today.

[Hossa]

cg said...

So if Army has one of his former mates lined up and can throw one of his knock out blows, does he?

I say no. Unless it's Dupuis.

Gonna be tough to see him on the wrong bench...

BlacknGold66 said...

If I don't get the FSN Pittsburgh feed of the game today on Center Ice I'm gonna shit a brick.

And, that yinzer rant by Poppa Stoosh was great! You nailed it as always.

I don't think I could be a Steelers fan if I lived in Pittsburgh. Much like I can't stand the Browns fans here. The Indians had one of the most memorable seasons (triple play, inside the park HR's, Cy Young winner, playoff spanking of the Yanks, etc.) in recent history, and the Cavs went to the finals but all anyone around here remembers from last year is drafting Brady Fucking Quinn. Not to mention that I inform at least one person a week that we have an AHL team in the Lake Erie Monsters. I mean, the word is out there about the Monsters on billboards, commercials, free tickets CONSTANTLY on the radio and people here still don't know we have a team?!?!?! It's crazy. I give the Clowns fans a little credit for rooting for a shitty team all these years, but honestly... if it's not the Buckeye's or the Browns then it get's no respect or attention in this town, much like the Pens in your town. You honestly can't go to a Monsters game without them playing "Hang On Sloopy" with the asshole fans cheering "O-H, I-O". Honestly people?? We're at a hockey game!!! You can't cheer when the Monsters score, but when they do the Buckeye chant you can go nuts? That's just rude.

Ah, shit. I just got all worked up and ranted on your asses for no reason. Nice going Stoosh!(sarcasmblog)

Whatev... Bring on the Thrashers

Let's Go Pens!!!

Flyer Hater said...

Great post as usual Stoosh. That's why I love being a fan of hockey. Madden touched on it earlier this week on one of his shows. It's like you're apart of an inside joke than noone else knows about. You really get connected with the sport and you don't feel the same with the other major ones. I probably can't convey it as well as Stoosh could, but do you know what i'm getting at?

IceCold... said...

dr.t,

i understand why you will not be bring your towel to the game, a good friend of mine shares the same sentiment and will not be bring his either.

but one of the things i love about this city is that i feel like i am apart of this huge family. this city is small enough and devoted enough that i feel it brings us together in a way most cities couldn't even understand let alone replicate. Myron Cope is kinda like the crazy uncle of pittsburgh. a pens game is a place to celebrate pittsburgh, so why not celebrate one of pittsburgh's beloved.

and while you said the steelers might not honor Lange, does that mean we should not honor Cope? that doesn't make us any better than them.

and also, the terrible towel, truly is his creation, not a only steeler nation creation.

other than obviously reason i want to be there, i am sad that i can't be there today to celebrate Myron Cope.

Jonny V said...

Well said icecold, I will never get the enmity Penguin-only fans feel towards Steelers fans. I cheer all teams of the city. And stoosh, are you saying that there aren't any equally obnoxious Penguins fans? Decked out in their faded Paul Coffey jerseys, getting drunk and challenging fans of the Flyers to fights? Come on now.

Dr. Turk Turkleton, I did catch Myers do that last night, it was huge. I remember a skit he did when Paris Hilton was hosting, and they were in a bar. He had the most dead-on yinzer accent, and he kept on hitting on her, asking her if she knew "Bill Caher".

Found some interesting things while perusing Gore...

.... You can bet the Bruins will try to sign Pittsburgh RW Marian Hossa as a free agent in the summer. He is close friends with his fellow Slovak, D Zdeno Chara, and would make a nice fit in Boston.

And there is talk that the new Russian hockey league is going to make attempts to become bigger than the NHL, and will try to lure their best talent back home. Should make for an interesting situation when Malkin is due for a new contract.

Pensgirl said...

The Pens are honoring Cope for three reasons.

First off, it's good business to acknowledge Steeler-related news. Look how much cred Sid earned arahnd tahn by waving a Terrible Towel.

Second, Myron was a vocal supporter of keeping the Pens in Pittsburgh.

Finally, it shows class, and the Pens do the classy thing 100 times out of 100.

Hip said...

I was gonna say - Stees probably wouldn't recognize Lange, but this just underscores why the Pens are a class organization. Cope in many ways embodies Pittsburgh and should definitely be recognized by the Pens.

The Seeker said...

I agree pensgirl.

Cope never dissed the Pens and did what he could as an announcer to help keep the Pens in Pittsburgh.

Not only that but he was deeply involved in the Allegheny School (for kids with Autism) and other charities. He brought the Vintage Grand Prix to Pittsburgh as well.

Maybe SOME Steeler fans couldn't care less about the Penguins, but we can remain above the fray and not stoop to that level. I root for ALL Pittsburgh sports even if I don't follow the others as closely and as fervently as our hockey club.

Mike Georger said...

im all for it. but i dont recall hearing booing between periods when i was at mellon for the playoffs last season, and im damn sure i heard boos going into halftime against jacksonville this january. penguins fans are better fans than steelers fans without a doubt

The Seeker said...

Any news on Colby by the way?

I heard he left the game last night holding his head after receiving a huge hit.

Wonder if he'll play today?

Mike Georger said...

i checked the atl website and although the article titled 'newest thrashers return to pittsburgh' doesnt even mention colby or crusher, the front page splash says theyre both playing

Jeffry said...

colby's +4 makes him the plus/minus leader for the thrashers.

From the AJC (Army did come back to the game yesterday)

Colby Armstrong also needed stitches after being checked into the boards by Boston's Milan Lucic. He left the game in the third, and Waddell said he got 15 to 18 stitches on the side of the head before returning.

Brett said...

Christ, I was watching Phili-Rangers shootout and happily saw Phili blow it, then turned it to our game and the goal light was already on!

Jonny V said...

Oh, and Mike Lange is one of the greatest announcers in Pittsburgh sports history, but he in no way approaches Myron Cope's status as an icon in this city.

Malone career high in goals. Sweet. I remember on these boards people were calling for him to be traded last year.

Flyer Hater said...

Fleury sucks, bring back Wregget.

Hey, the answer, Joel Kwaitowski with an assist!

Fleury was more than solid today with 31 saves. He should play every game in this upcoming road trip in the Southeast division. Huge win. EC overthought his move.

Oh, LEGAME

Pensblog Staff said...

hooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Flyer Hater said...

Crosby is coming on the road trip!

Mike Georger said...

sounded like christensen got booed before his shot

Flyer Hater said...

Christensen was really dumb today in the shootout. You don't think every goaltender in the league knows his great move? This reason that it's effective is because of how quickly EC turns his hands, not because the move is unpredicatable.

Dave said...

The confidence wasn't there. Again.

Flyer Hater said...

Yesterday, the sky is falling and the Pens aren't making the playoffs. OH NOES!!

We win today, and suddenly we're first in the Atlantic and are two games away from getting Hossa and Crosby back.

Gotta love it.

Big win. Huge emotions before the game with the Army interview. I thought he and Potash were going to suck face or something. Couldn't go to todays game so I sold my tix. We'll have no more of that mind you.

Tear it up. Let's go Pens!

wilsmith said...

EC obviously still feels a part of this team and was just helping us get that 2nd point. durrr

I Have Kasparaitis said...

Wow, awesome game! Happy Birthday, Lange!! We love ya!

Ya, I remember all last yr. and the trade talks of Malone. I kept telling all the hockey people I talked to that he was too important to trade. (BTW: He is my fav. hockey player and has been since he joined the Pens.) He is blowing my mind right now! Wow! That goal was pretty fantastic.

'Just Max' Talbot was playing some awesome hockey today. I think MT had a little conversation with him or something cuase he was fierce!

Gill looks like he's gettting use to us and LeGame should be given a medal for being that amazing! Solid Hits, Solid SO Goal, and Solid Playing. Sydor is looking a little off but the rest of D is making up for it.

I know this sounds far-fetched but did Christensen wipe it on purpose? I mean come on ... he had to have known Flower would get that. I know I am insane, but I'm just saying ...

Still tired of refs ... Gill is huge what do you expect? And that Malone penalty was bull because he got shoved in the net.

In the back of mind I was thinking that Hedburg might of had a chance to play because ATL is like the younger sibling who wants to be just like his older brother.

Malkin is going to remain my hero even when The Kid comes back. He is just superb. All Hail Evgeni Malkin-g!

In Malkin I Will Always Trust.
