People always say, "Don't kill the messenger."
But KDKA's Bob Pompeani was ready for a beatdown when he delivered the news late Monday night that Gary Roberts' return this season is questionable.
But Pompeani is just doing his job.
Ron Cook is unleashing the news in his column Tuesday.
And it's much easier to hate Ron Cook. [ PG ]
That is the first time we have read anything Ron Cook has wrote in 10 years.
Life just doesn't make sense anymore.
But...
If anyone can bounce back from two bad leg injuries, it is Roberts.
"You can be damn sure I'll give it my best effort," he said.
"I just want to be a piece of the puzzle," he said. "Even as a third-line player ..."
"There's no way I want to pack it in under these circumstances" -- he conceded, quietly, "I know I have to show them something this year to be back next year."

WWGRD will live on forever, no matter what.
We believe in the power. So if you think we are writing him off, you're nuts.
It just doesn't seem like the story should end yet.
We say don't kill the messenger, but the doctors who gave Roberts the news of an overlooked torn ligament are noticably absent in that Ron Cook article.
Just sayin.

There is nothing like the NHL trade deadline.
Insanity is everywhere.
Case in point:
Nick Kypreos, of some Canadian website that gave him a job because he played in the NHL, says the Pens are trading Evgeni Malkin.
We will put our blog on the line.
If the Penguins trade Malkin today, we will walk away from Pensblog forever.
.......
We should be able to give up-to-the-minute updates for most of the day.
We may even liveblog for a while, whatever that means.
Either way, we get our updates from TSN, so just go there instead.

The rumors have been running rampant over the past few weeks.
Martin Havlat's coming here.
Hal Gill is coming here.
Fleury is leaving town.
Orpik is leaving town.
Nobody knows.

The wisdom of Ray Shero:
"As with anything, it depends on the cost," he said. "It's like when you go shopping for a car. You might like something, but it's way out of your price range, or if you have a family budget, sometimes it's not going to fit into what you want to do."

The one name jobbing around is Angelo Esposito, the Pens' first-round pick this past draft.
He was injured, which made him drop to the Pens in the draft.
But he has a cool name, which may trick a team into giving the Pens something for a player who's been frowned upon since getting injured last season.

The big rumor is that Hal Gill is coming to Pittsburgh.
Whatev.
What we must mention is that commentor "PHIL" mentioned Monday morning that Roberts was gonna be out for another month at least.
It came true.
He also mentioned Armstrong was on his way out of Pittsburgh.
Stay tuned.

hal gill makes me sick.
staios ftw!
I still wonder why I didn't watch hockey for 5-6 years. What a boring time that was.
The PG article on Roberts made me feel better about the whole situation. I believe he can pull through. He has Pensblog and Pens fan behind him. That's all he needs. For anyone with Facebook, I got bored and made a "Pray For Gary Roberts" group. Enjoy: http://cup.facebook.com/group.php?gid=10358317230
Tomorrow should be interesting. Trading and Fleury in goal?
P.S. The Ruutu PS is epic.
P.P.S. Let's bring that powerplay back. It has to start somewhere, right? We should make one with Pensblog written on it and people can download it and print it and take it to home games with them. It could catch on.
So I took my own advice and made a modern version of the sign. I sent it to the staff, so hopefully they can post it and we can start this sweet idea back up and bring it back.
Solid idea, Shoez.
Seriously.
Agreed Canaan, Hal Gill would make me vomit. He'd be like our version of a bigger and slower Derian Hatcher.
If you put Gonchar and Lidstrom on the same blue line, you could probably put a 55 gallon garbagec an in goal.
Top 5 Trades We'd Like To See segment was great. I dont see how anyone passes those trades up. I mean, you talk young prospects, you talk Mayor Luke. What a mayor...anyone for golf?
Let's Go Roberts.
Staff,
Did you get my e-mail with the signs? It took forever to send and the files were huge, so I was just checking.
I guess Kypreos is still a little foggy after that night back in 97.
No word on wether or not he was concious when the article was printed.
i'd actually like to see gill in black & gold. no way army goes, though, he's bing's best friend on the team.
and i would seriously cry.
The Jaws theme and shark fins definitely should be brought back. Good work, Sh0ez on creating a lil sumthin sumthin for us to use. I will gladly print and take to a game.
Seriously, enough with we can't see Armstrong go because he's Sid's friend. If the right deal comes along, I wouldn't hesitate about getting rid of him.
"I just want to be a piece of the puzzle," he said. "Even as a third-line player ..."
This is what separates Gary Roberts from Mark Recchi. Recchi wasn't willing to do what was right for the team.
Long live Gary Roberts!
Malkin isn't going anywhere. Fleury isn't going anywhere.
Jeff Jimmerson's hair for Luongo straight up.
Again I say, this is why The Pensblog is a big deal.
I've been going through Pittsburgh withdrawl lately... anyone want to FedEx me a Southside Slopes from Fatheads?
i'd do that lidstrom deal in a heartbeat.
@fleury29 -
totally agree about Roberts. that quote from the article was my favorite. i really hope shero re-signs him for one more, if this injury doesn't turn out to be terrible.
I don't know why, but I've got this feeling in my gut that Sergei Fedorov will be a Pen by the end of the day. Call me crazy.
In Shero we trust!
That Sabu pic is from the Onion. DOn't know why or in what context, but the headline was something dumb like "Penguins goalie goes for break away"
the Sabu pic looks like a good Photoshop job to me....there are too many things visually wrong with it...
-the shadow is *too* perfect
-all Sabu's weight is on his left skate, yet it's the right skate that's kicking up a shower of ice? (plus it doesn't even look like his right skate is on the ice)
my 2 cents.
Hal Gill is a worthless piece of shit. Of course, since anyone with any trade value whatsoever in Toronto has a no-trade clause and has refused to waive it, Gill is the most valuable guy the Leafs have left to trade. I'd rather have Gill's Czech version, Marek Malik, but I wouldn't give up a player above ECHL ability for him.
Since Comcast blows, I'm stuck listening to the audio of the TSN deadline day coverage. At least I don't have to watch the dueling bald heads of Darren Pang and Pierre McGuire.
Didn't Patty Roy attempt something like that, with a spin move on an opposing player a few yrs ago?
I vaguely remember that Sabu play from earlier in the season...I believe it was the 5-0 win in Jersey. There was a delayed penalty and Sabu sprinted for the bench, but before he could get there, the puck came right to him and he played it to a teammate to keep the Devils from touching it. Seemed like a pretty cool, heads-up play at the time.
Not a deadline deal but Comrie committed to the Indian for one more year by signing an extension last night.
@nathan & others dumping on Gill
is Gill > Scuds ?
is Gill > Sydor ?
I don't think he'd come here in anticipation of replacing Gonch on the PP or be a top 4 d-man...
as a 5 or 6 d-man, he'd fit in...as long as King Shero doesn't give up too much, he should pull the trigger
@Dr. Turkleton: No and no. Hal Gill is a poor man's Derian Hatcher. He's never been any good, except when he was playing against Jagr. I'd rather take my chances with Sydor and Scuderi than the big stork.
Gary Roberts thinks that speculation about the end of his career is bullshit.
In fact, it's rumored that on his way to his car after last night's newscast, Bob Pompeani spontaneously combusted. This may or may not have been related to the fact that he dared insinuate that the career of Roberts may be coming to an end as a result of this injury.
when the hell is all the action going to start?
It's been very quiet so far today.
Wow...TSN is just off the charts right now...
Rumors circulating that John Paddock might get fired because Ottawa got crushed last night by Toronto, just one game removed from their two-period snoozefest against the Pens.
They're also reporting that Ottawa and Montreal may be leading the charge for Hossa. Montreal might be willing to move Ryder, Lapierre and Grabovski. The Ottawa deal is rumored to have Vermette, Schubert and Foligno going to Atlanta. If that's what Ottawa is willing to pay for a one-year rental, God bless them. I don't want Shero jumping into that pool if that's what it'll take.
Also, this is typical Leafs. TSN said teams have expressed interest in Antropov, Ponikarovsky, Ian White, Kyle Wellwood and Matt Stajan. They're looking to rebuild, so they're going to trade all their young guys to make it happen. And Toronto wonders why they never win.
Christina has to be right on with the photoshop explanation. All the spray is on the left but all his weight is on the right. The shadow wouldn't be like that either since there are lights all around and not just coming from behind. There would be a shadow, but it wouldn't be like that.
Also, he's playing the puck to the right, which you would think would be the direction of the offensive zone. Yet the spray is to the left, so he was skating from right to left... so why would he be going towards the defensive zone?
@matt gajtka, you have a clip or anything of that play? The pic just seems to messed up, but if you say you saw it, I guess it's possible
@wilsmith: Nah, I don't have any physical evidence that the play in question really happened. I also can see how it might be a Photoshop.
I looked back just to make sure that Sabu was in net that night and he was, not that it really proves anything.
Breaking trade: Bryce Salvador to New Jersey for Cam Janssen. Good pickup for the Devils, since they get a real defenseman for a no-talent thug.
flyers get prospal for a minor leaguer and a conditional pick, huge pickup. if everyone else in the division race makes a move and shero sits idle we look bad imo
The thing is, though, even if the Pens sit idle today, the fact that MAF and Crosby are coming back shortly, it's like they made a couple of big deadline deals for a starting goalie and an elite center.
yeah but we dont need any more goalies or centremen. we need a physical defenseman and those two coming back isnt going to matter in that regard.
but i get what you mean, and god willing sid will be back soon
PB Charlie would fit in nicely on this TSN Tradecentre panel
Good to see JFJ find some work
Pierre McGuire said "big body presence." DRINK!
MIKE GEORGER - Completely disagree.
This is part of the problem with the deadline. It's not a race to see which teams can outdo each other. It's about setting your own team up with the right kinds of players needed to solidify the overall roster for a playoff run.
Smyth, Tkachuk and Forsberg were some of the big names who moved last year and not one of them got their teams out of the first round. The only move Anaheim made last year was to add Brad May. They won the Cup.
I'm not saying a big acquisition won't help get this team over the hump. And I do think there's some validity to the argument that this team is in a position where it might make sense to make a big move in an attempt to go for it.
But Shero has to be careful with just how much he's willing to gamble.
It doesn't matter to me one iota what another team does with their roster today...there's no guarantees that it'll work for them. If the Sens see fit to dump three integral pieces of their future for Hossa, it doesn't mean the Pens should follow suit; such a move may not make sense for them. There are no guarantees that a similar move would work for the Pens.
This isn't about keeping pace with the Canadiens, Flyers and Sens just because they feel the need to mortgage their own futures. If Shero's going to make moves, I want him to make moves that are designed only to make this team more playoff-ready; I don't want him shipping Staal, Armstrong and Esposito to Florida for Jokinen just because Ottawa shipped Vermettte, Schubert and Foligno to Atlanta for Hossa.
On that Sabourin pic...
I watched my DVD of the Nov. 5th game against the Devils just now. This is the only game he was in net when the Pens have played in New Jersey. The only period where it would make any sense that Sabu would be passing in front of the Devils bench to get to the Pens bench is in the second. There was a delayed penalty on Zach Parise for Hi-sticking on Brooks Orpik (with 3:33 left in the period), however Sabourin was no where near the puck. Petr Sykora had just passed the puck to Tyler Kennedy as he was approaching the Devils blue line and got smashed by Vitaly Vishnevski and then the whistle blew.
Staff...glad to see the need to sign in on comments.
I just want something to happen already...even if it has nothing to do with the pens
It didn't really pick up until around lunch time last year either. We've had the Prospal deal last night and the Salvador-Janssen deal about 45 minutes ago. You can watch the TSN coverage online via NHL.com -- it's the top story when you first go to the page. And when you bring it up, you get the wonderful experience of the combined glare of the TV lights coming off Darren Pang's and Pierre McGuire's heads.
stoosh i agree they shouldnt be giving up huge pieces of the future. shipping staal for hossa or havlat would be retarded in my opinion. but looking at the deals jersey and philly have made, they gave up very little to fill needs they had.
i dont think philly is good enough to make it through the east, but i do think jersey is, and they got stronger today. i honestly do not think our defense is strong enough to make a cup run. i dont trust guys like scuderi to not give guys like heatley wide open shots. i would feel much better about this team making a legitimate run this year if they bolstered the defense, and not doing that when the main contention in the divison is strengthen their squad is a mistake .
of course thats based on the assumption that there are pieces out there that can be got for reasonable prices, and again i think the two moves made thus far show just that
damn, Wade Belak is off the board...going to FLA for a 5th rounder...
Wake up, Shero !!!!!
Leafs trade Wade Belak to Florida for a 5th round pick. Oooooooooh.
How's that rebuilding effort going there?
strengthening*
idk if thats even a word
New trade. Brian Campbell to San Jose. That was a guy who would've been nice in Pittsburgh.
where are you seeing that one?
MIKE GEORGER - I agree with that end of it, and I think Shero will make a move or two like that in order to keep pace. I just don't want to see him make a trade simply for the sake of making a trade.
I do think the defense needs to be upgraded a bit, and I'd like to see them add some secondary scoring in the form of someone like Tuomo Ruutu, maybe even someone like Miro Satan. I think there are some low-cost upgrades that could be made that won't force Shero to disrupt much on the current roster.
It seems every year, there's a deal or two that's made that comes out of nowhere by the Pens, and I'm sure we'll see that this year as well.
TSN. I took the day off from work and I'm watching the deadline deal coverage.
campbell 'reportedly' traded to SJ, for whom, they didn't say
tsn is reporting it
Basically what they're saying that the deal has been made, Campbell's definitely going to San Jose, but they don't know yet who's going to Buffalo.
wow solid trade for Sharks
Steven Bernier and a 1st round pick going to Buffalo for Campbell.
Steve Bernier is the sharks player who was traded
I had surgery on my right index finger and right elbow yesterday. Just letting you other regulars know why I won't be posting on here much. It's a bitch to type.
Stokes = Awesome meeting you on Sunday. You rep. the Pens fans in Pittsburgh very well. We'll have to do it again next time I'm in town.
Fuck, I have more to say but really can't type.
Damnit!
LET'S GO PENS!!!
what do you guys think of holik and olli? will the pens go after one of those two centers?
also, what would you rather have:
a d-man that can clear people out in the d-zone (ex. clearing the front of the net) or a center that can win faceoffs?
TSN's now reporting that the Lightning and Stars have agreed to a deal for Brad Richards, pending Richards agreeing to waive his no-movement clause.
We've already got Whitney, Gonchar and Letang with Goligoski in the wings. We don't really need another defenseman like Campbell...especially since Bernier and a first rounder would've been like giving up Jordan Staal and a first rounder.
Given that Campbell is going to command like $7M a year, this was a steal for Buffalo.
finger and elbow surgery? i had the same problem when i found a keypass for bangbros
campbell leaving the east is fine by me
a d-man that can clear people out in the d-zone (ex. clearing the front of the net) or a center that can win faceoffs?
the dman.
brad richards to big D ?????
For those who can't get the NHL Network coverage, Fan590 out of Toronto provides good stuff on deadline day. I've been listening to them for the last few years.
Richards waived his NMC. He's going to Dallas, no word yet on who's going back the other way.
Richards has been traded to the Stars accoring to Fan590, and Mike Smith is supposedly one of the players coming to TB
TSN.ca reports Richards and Holmquist in Dallas for Mike Smith, Jussi Jokinen, and Jeff Halpern.
Richards to Dallas for Mike Smith, Jussi Jokinen, and Jeff Halpern.
Yeah, add Holmqvist going to Dallas with Richards.
'reportedly'...not confirmed by TSN...
Huet to WSH for 2nd round pick
590 reports Huet is now a Cap with Montreal receiving a 2nd rounder in return.
if huet is gone for MTL....they're putting all their eggs in Carey Prices' basket ????....maybe another goalie going to the Habs?
TSN's reporting it now. Probably the end of Olie Kolzig in Washington.
Sabourin???
It's his home town
huge deal for the Caps.
They get Huet from the Habs...
oh boy
sucks to be olie the goalie
jesus huet is 31 i thought he was younger
TSN confirms the Huet deal.
They have another prospect that they seem to think highly of, but I'm forgetting his name.
Halak?
those guys would stroke out if hossa didn't go anywhere today.
NHLnumbers' server has crashed. I wanted to see if Huet was signed beyond this season.
Mother of god. Let's hope Shero keeps his cool and does the right thing; which I think he will do.
btw first post in cblog hello everyone.
huet is an UFA
Brad Richards to Dallas.
Richards is overrated, imo.
I'm pretty sure I heard the guys on TSN say that Huet was going to be a UFA after this season.
he's a UFA after this season.... this site hasn't crashed yet
WSH could've had bryzgolov instead....huet is a tier 2 starter, IMO
Huet may be better then what they had... This could get wash into the playoffs.
but I agree Dr., they could have had someone else.
i think huet is worth a second rounder, in that division he could be enough to put them on 'top'
Maybe the Habs can bring in the Moose along with Hossa.
loser chris I think so too...
Rutuu's brother to Carolina for Andrew Ladd
I think I heard 590 say the Canes and Hawks trading Tuomo Ruutu for Andrew Ladd.
has anyone else heard anything about Shero scheduling a press conference at 4:30?
yes....it's right on the penguins webpage...live stream as well
Salei out of the pens picture: to COL for Karlis Skrastins
that 'yes' was in ref to King Shero presser at 430p
picklestabber, that's the first I've heard of it.
Florida moves Salei to Colorado for Skrastins and a third?
hes announcing mario's comeback
Should I be nervous that he's waiting for the better part of the afternoon to do his press conference?
Mike, I hear he's in the best shape of his life.
MTL gets Hossa. you heard it here first. Ominous.
best shape of his life
Big miss by not getting Salei. I fully expect Orpik to walk, leaving... Letang as our physical, shut-down D-man?
I hate seeing teams like Florida, who I consider a tumor to the NHL, making moves like that. Could have easily been our 3rd round pick and utility defender.
Maybe Shero doesn't want the authorities to find Therrien's body under the Bloomfield Bridge if he had the audacity to trade Scuderi?
Ruslan Salei to Colorado for Karlis Skrastins and a 3rd round pick. TSN calling it.
if its a 'we arent trading anyone' presser ill be furious for the anticipation factor alone.
what could we be looking at? sid announcement?
TSN's called the Ruutu/Ladd deal.
Ladd for Ruutu trade confirmed per tsn.
The deadline will have passed by 4:30, so it wouldn't be a "we're not trading anyone" press conference. Might be more of a state of the team address, dealing with players coming back from injury and any players the Pens do pick up.
@ mike georger
if its a 'we arent trading anyone' presser ill be furious for the anticipation factor alone.
with the deadline being 3pm and the presser at 430p...I hope it's something different than 'we aren't trading anyone'
maybe it's planned to give a State of the Penguins after the deadline, update on Roberts, Sid, Fleury & to discuss any trades or non-trades they've made
@nathan....
are you looking over my shoulder as I type ??????
too funny
I forgot what I was going to say.
Oh yeah, there was an article last night that named the specifics of two deals, the dallas/richards one, and hossa to monteal.
It was dead on with Dallas, let's see about Montreal.
@Dr. Turkleton: I was wondering the same thing there... Just for the record for the rest of the commenterblog readers, we are not the same person.
Hradek is setting this jobber on ESPNews straight.
First question of the gate was "With Boyle re-signing, what does this mean for Brad Richards' future?"
Nice effort, ESPN.
Worldwide Leader = joke
It sucks not having FSN Pittsburgh.
It sucks to fork out $13M over three years and an unconditional "kill my social life for Center Ice" contract.
It does not suck to have the NHL Network for free on my cable carrier right now.
FSN Pittsburgh is re-airing the Gonch/Malkin interview from this past weekend.
Rob Blake has rejected a deal to Detroit, but would accept a trade to Anaheim and Colorado
Martin Lapointe to Ottawa.
JOHNNY WRATH - I don't know. Salei is due about $3 million next year and $3.2 million the following year with the cap hit at about $3 million. Skrastins is only signed through next year at about $2.4 million, so it's a cost-cutting move for Florida.
I'm not sure I'd call Skrastins a utility defenseman. He's not very good in the offensive zone, but he's a decent positional shutdown guy. I'm not sure what else we could've offered Florida. Scuderi's not a better option for Florida...neither is Lannon. Sydor? Maybe. Orpik? Well, if you're going to deal for Salei to boost the physical presence of your defense, why deal Orpik?
There are going to be plenty of options available for the team to upgrade their overall defensive presence this summer as well. It doesn't all have to happen now.
TSN just reported Martin Lapointe from Chicago to Ottawa. No word on return coming back. They also reported that Lapointe and Robert Lang were pulled off the ice at Blackhawks practice, so it looks like Bobby Lang is on his way out.
Ottawa gave up a sixth-rounder for Lapointe, I believe.
Ottawa's sending a 6th round pick back to Chicago for Lapointe.
Marty Lapointe to the Sens for a 6th?
If anyone wants to listen to a great show. TSN is streaming there tradecenter. It is a great show
I concur on Tradecentre being a great show. It's all I've been listening to all day.
Not reading all the comments...
But just in case nobody knows... for those who are stuck at work, you can get the NHLNetwork feed from NHL.com.
@bng66
1st off...hope everything goes well w/ your recovery from last Fri. & this recent surgery....
I tried to find you Saturday w/ about 5 minutes left before the opening horn...went up to E28, looking for a yellow hat in row G, but didn't find you!!!!....my seats are over in E18 so the walk over during the intermissions would have been next to impossible...didn't go Sunday due to a 'family function', but hope to catch up with you next time your in town....
they'll be showing the Shero presser on the pens site at 430p...don't know if FSN-Pitt will show it as well...(if it were the Steelers, it would be a DEFINITE)
And for the record, the NHL Network (streaming on NHL.com) is simulcasting Tradecentre. They really know how to cover the deadline.
Staff - Yeah, TSN even had Baranby on there a few times
Campbell is getting all misty-eyed on us on NHL network.
Charlie spotted in Squirrel Hill tunnel.
click
Foote is heading back to teh 'lanche.
No idea who is coming back to Columbus.
TSN's confirming the Foote deal. Does Colorado have any money left?
Campbell seemed to take the whole departure from Buffalo thing very hard. They interviewed him on the TSN feed, and he seemed both upset to be leaving Buffalo but also frustrated that the situation deteriorated to this point.
Regier is going to be getting a ton of criticism for this, and rightfully so. He did make a really nice deal to compensate for the loss of Campbell - Bernier is a good player who will fit in well there. But the fans there were attached to that core the same way we're attached to ours. Imagine four or five years down the road, Shero inexplicably allows Crosby and Malkin to leave in free agency without making any real attempts to extend them and then deals Letang at the deadline, and all we get back is a decent prospect and a first-round pick.
Regier, to some degree, seems like he went to the Dave Littlefield School of Asset Management the way he handled some of these personnel decisions. Last summer, he said all sorts of good-will stuff in a press conference after Drury and Briere left about how much they wanted to keep them both. But actions speak louder than words, and it spoke volumes that Regier NEVER approached Briere about an extension until a week before free agency started.
The time to approach Briere was prior to the 06-07 season. Briere was coming off a 58-point season in 05-06 and had just the 06-07 season left on his deal. Regier KNEW Briere was in line to be a big-ticket free agent, and he KNEW Briere was a good fit for Buffalo's system. Losing Drury was one thing; losing Briere was quite another because he was such a good fit on that team.
At least he was able to salvage something for Campbell.
wooooo first Forsberg, now Foote and maybe Blake. We are going all the way!!!!....wait? what? this ISN'T the 2001 Colorado Av's fan message board? my mistake.
It's only a matter of time before Patrick Roy and Ray Bourque come out of retirement.
Mike Milbury: Nice job, John [Ferguson, former Leafs GM], way to cripple the rebuilding of your former team. I always knew there would be GM successors to my destruction of the Islanders.
Caps just got Federov?
Sergei Fedorov to Washington. No word yet as to what's going to Columbus in this deal.
Looks like the Blue Jackets are in full sell mode.
another board is reporting Fedorov to the Caps
Looks like I might get to go see some playoff games in person after all this year (I live in Virginia). The Caps look like they're gearing up to make a run at the Southeast Division title.
Lemieux is in the best shape of his life.
Just syain'.
Brian Burke is the best...
he doesn't hold anything back...I love his stance on No Trade Clauses: he basically said that the GM's shouldn't go to NHL HQ in NY & cry to help fix the problem with having to get NTC out of those contracts, how's bout GM's Just.Say.No. every once in awhile
Brian Burke = next years Leafs GM?
Columbus got a conditional first-round pick (either 2008 or 09) for Foote, and if Foote re-signs in Colorado, the Jackets will get another draft pick.
The Jackets got Teddy Ruth (Roof?) for Fedorov.
I love the coverage that The Fourth Period is giving.
http://www.thefourthperiod.com
I'm also glad we didn't get Ruutu, it seems like EC might have had to be on the way out and just salary wise I wouldn't have liked it, plus I believe Ruutu, although still young, is declining as each year pasts. A defenseman would be bigger than Ron Jeremy's dick, but I'm not sure how I feel about McKee's $4 million.
Rumored deal, Matt Cooke to Washington for Matt Pettinger. Byron Ritchie also didn't practice with the Canucks this morning.
I've always liked Matt Cooke, he's a great pain-in-the-ass kind of player.
I can't get Trade Center to load. Anyone else having problems?
@coffeytalk:
Yeah, TSN.ca is seemingly getting crushed right now. Loading verrrry slow for me -- if at all.
Coming into the home stretch with Marian Hossa still on the board... Don't shut it down right at 3, though, since we'll see deals announced until about 5:00 or so.
I'm trying to run the NHL.com stream on the big screen, and it's buffering every 20-30 seconds. I'm thinking I might go back to the FAN if it keeps this up.
@J.S. That's why I went back to audio only. That's been pretty steady throughout the day (since I seem to have been the first one here to note the Cooke-Pettinger deal).
Running out of time to make a deal. Maybe Gary Roberts is healing Eaton's leg and we don't need to pick up a d-man.
They've been jobbing Ferguson Jr. about his moves and signings, which is the main reason I was keeping it on.
It's thoroughly entertaining when Mike Milbury joins the fun in beating up Ferguson for his deals, like he didn't destroy an NHL franchise of his own. They should've brought in Neil Smith and put the three of them over at the "Disastrously incompetent GMs" table.
wow...it's gang up on JFJ time....
handcuffed & not blindfolded talk - charlie woulda been right at home
2007-08 Catch Phrase OTY: No Trade Clause
It's Ek, but his latest post is "Hossa may be traded to the Penguins."
Asst GM Chuck Fletcher saying it isn't true.
The Sportsnet rumor has Hossa + 6th round for Staal, Armstrong, & 1st round pick
You know, with the possible exception of Brian Campbell and Adam Foote, no one's really grossly overpaid for any of the players they've picked up. I'm not entirely sure if Foote's worth a first-round pick, but I think every other deal's been pretty reasonable, even the Brad Richards deal to the Stars.
Might be a good sign if the Pens are actually in the running for Hossa.
And now he is reporting Ottawa likes their chances for Hossa. Honestly, how dominate can this team get? I know a lot would be going the other way, but they'd have like two all star lines.
If the Pens happen to get Hossa, Shero better be confident an extension will take place.
...and not just the extension in the collective pants of the Pens nation
please, please Shero, don't trade Staal!
Pens got Gil for what I don't know
@ Chris M:
Source?
Hal Gill. In Shero We (don't) Trust
FTL
Robert Lang back to the Pens?
See, I can be Eklund too.
@ big rick : the fourth period i know reported it
They said TSN.ca on Sportsnet chat
Hal Gill coming here for a 2nd and a 5th.
Christian Backman to the Rangers for a 4th.
Well, at least we didn't give up a roster player for Gill. I suppose I can live with that. He still sucks, though.
McGuire said "big body presence" again. Drink.
wow i would take backman over hill any day straight up. and throw on top of that the rangers only gave up a 4th and we gave up a 2nd and 5th? ouch. now what defenseman sits?
Gill for a 2nd and a 5th?
Rejean better plan on giving me a fifth for each game he plays.
ha, i combined hal and gill and created hill. my bad.
Marian Hossa is COMING HERE!
For Esposito, Army, and EC, and maybe a 1st round pick.
Winner winner chicken dinner. In Shero we trust!
I only like it if we extend Hossa, other wise FU Shero.
And we've reached the official deadline. Let's see what comes in late. Meanwhile, Pierre McGuire is killing the Pens for this deal.
Pascal Dupuis is coming along with Hossa in this deal, and the Pens' 1st-rounder is definitely going to Atlanta.
Shero's gone all-in for the Eastern Conference championship this year.
It's not awful... We are loaded at center, and if we find a way to keep one of either Staal or Malkin, then those two would be our 3rd line center, and that's not to their abilities, and if we find a way to keep all three (not likely if we extend Hossa), then they are not even cracking the lineup. Colby, although a great character, is not all that much better than Kennedy. And our draft pick will be a late one again... it's not awful. Honestly, I thought there was no way for it to go down AND keep Staal. I don't like the Gill move though. Now our first pick is the 3rd round? Unless they are different years or something, but still.
You know, if the Pens can't hammer out an extension with Hossa before the draft, I wonder if Shero will try to move him for a high first-round pick in this year's draft. Shero didn't give up Staal, he got the best player available, and he got some help on defense. It's a gamble for sure, but the Pens have a great shot to make a deep playoff run. I like these deals.
Hossa wearing the black and gold. I gotta post this after my Shero comment a few minutes ago:
click
"Is that owner [in Pittsburgh] prepared to go to the cap every year?"
I think so, especially with the new arena definitely on the way. The Pens will definitely get more revenue once that opens than they get from the Igloo.
the first is a conditional pick, which makes me wonder if they'll get that pick if he signs elsewhere in the offseason.
The Fourth Period says we gave up too much talent. I'm not so sure about that. EC has been given the chance and it's just not working here in Pittsburgh. Armstrong has shown flashes, but he is not the guy you want playing with Sid. Espo could be something special, but we have talent at centers! And of course the 1st round draft pick could be a talented player, but we have a lot of prospects that have gotten NHL experience this year. I'm kind of liking it, like I have said 400 times though, if Hossa is not in a Pens uniform next year I hate it (unless we win the cup this year).
Chris Simon got traded to Minnesota for a 6th round pick. Now he can take his thuggery out west and join Boogard and Todd Fedoruk.
good point js
Chris Simon will not be playing tonight. He's been traded to the Wild for a 6th.
Good riddance, ya turd.
Brad Stuart to Detroit for a 2nd and a 4th.
If I remember correctly, in part of the deal to get Laraque, we traded a '08 3rd rounder. So now our 4th round pick we be our first haha
I am fucking pissed off about these dumbass trades. I understand trading EC but not Colby. He is our heart and soul. Unless we win the cup this year, fuck Shero. We traded 3 first round picks for a fucking rental. If we re-sign Hossa, then we will lose Malkin or Staal. Fuck this. So sad to see Colby go.
Phoenix got Al Montoya and Marcel Hossa for Fredrik Sjostrom, Josh Gratton, and some goalie.
The Leafs traded Chad Kilger to Florida for a 3rd.
Kilger off to the Panthers for a third.
Marc-Andre Bergeron to Anaheim for a 3rd.
Wow Brad Stuart for a 2nd and 4th and we got Gill for a 2nd and 5th. I'd take Stuart over Gill any day. And the Hossa deal is kind of like getting a 70 inch HD TV for Christmas only to have it break when I open it. It's exciting and the winger we need, but if he's not in a Pens uniform next year and/or we don't win the cup this year, awful move. Plus, this might mean not being able to sign either Staal or Malkin
Sinops, I think this trade is for the better. EC has basically played on every line this season, and aside from him dominating on shootouts, he really wasn't contributing on the scoresheet as expected this year. As much as I wanted to see Espo get a shot here, I'm not sure how it would have happened with Cros and Geno on the top two lines. Does it suck that Colby's gone? Yeah, I guess it does, but you do realize who is coming back in return?
Sometimes you have to give a little more in order to get that all star at the deadline.
Let's not forget that Hossa has yet to show up in the playoffs...
Man, this Gill move is really making me angry after seeing all these other defenseman go for similar drafts picks.
Unless Staal goes crazy next season, the Pens should be able to re-sign him pretty cheap. There's no way he'll command even half of Malkin's money unless he outperforms his rookie season next year.
Ray Shero, you have some balls, my friend. I salute you.
Hossa's on TSN now.
And Hossa had two good playoff seasons with Ottawa in 2002 and 2003. No one from Atlanta showed up last season in the playoffs, much like no one except Crosby and MAF showed up last year for Pittsburgh. Hossa was a top-line player on each of his playoff teams, so he would've been going up against the top D pair of their opponents. Adding him to Pittsburgh gives the Pens two deadly scoring lines (Malkin-Sykora-Insert LW here, and Crosby-Hossa-Insert LW here), so someone's going to be seeing the second D pairing in the playoffs. The Pens are contenders right now.
I bet Armstrong, Christensen, and Rex all score goals on Sunday against the Pens....
:-p
I underestimated Dupuis' value. Double digit goal totals since 2002, including a 20g-28a-48p season in 2003.
Yo momma battler J.S. Aubin is now a Anaheim Duck. The LA Kings get a 7th rounder
Malone with Sid and Hossa!?
Staal with Geno and Petey Sykora!?
JS
i do realize who is coming. still don't care. what happened to not mortgaging the future for this year. i would say 3 first rounders for a non playoff performing rental is fucking stupid.
Colby will make us pay on sunday.
J.S Aubin reacts to the trade
click
Talbot or Staal will get the wing duty, with the other getting the third line center. Kennedy might sneak up there, but I'm not sure. Wonder what the lineup will look like until Sid returns.
Imagine for the playoffs though, if Roberts can come back.
Hossa - Crosby - Talbot/Staal (maybe Malone or Kennedy jumps up, don't know)
Malone - Malkin - Sykora
Kennedy - Staal/Talbot - Roberts
Ruutu - Taffe - Laraque
Plus Dupuis somewhere in there and if Hall comes back. Pretty deep team for the playoffs. Man it's weird writing a Pens lineup without Colby though.
I'm sorry, trading away Armstrong and EC is not "mortgaging the future." You could possibly make a case for Esposito, but no one knows how he'll do in the NHL. Draft picks are always crapshoots, and if you don't have a competent GM making the picks, you end up with picks like Patrik Stefan #1 overall.
Trading Staal would've been mortgaging the future, because he's actually shown some NHL-level ability. That #1 pick is going to be mid- to late-round, so it's not like we were in the running for the greatest prospects anyway. Armstrong and EC are probably going to be third-liners throughout their careers.
Nathan I agree with you 100%. I'm sorry to see Army and EC go too, but they were not the future. Espo -- maybe. The 1st rounder -- maybe.
Hossa is an easy replacement for them. Our future is still bright.
I agree Nathan, especially about Armstrong and EC, and especially about being third liners, and especially on this team. Especially.
