Just a bad situation last night in the Buffalo/Florida game.
Richard Zednik got cut in the throat by teammate Olli Jokinen's skate.
Zednik is going to be all right. [TSN.ca]
Huge credit to all the doctors on hand.
Can you even imagine having to think and respond that quickly?
[Yahoo pictures] has some pictures of the incident.

There was a huge delay in the game.
You have to wonder if they should've canceled the game.
NHL officials were on hand and decided to go on with the game after being notified that Zednik would be all right and that both teams consented on finishing the game.
Thoughts go out to Richard Zednik.

shades of clint malarchuk, terrifying, two cut throats in two days
also
One night, I'm gonna come inside your house, wherever you're sleeping, and I'm gonna cut your throat.
Scary stuff. Kudos to the docs there. That's all about applying and holding serious pressure asap. I'm shocked he didn't faint before getting off the ice. Zed's a warrior though. He probably would have wanted them to finish the game.
Hey Mikey Georger - you have a nice day too buddy.
@mike georger
What a terrible situation. Great job by the med. staff.
@ mike geoger
Nice "There Will Be Blood" reference.
Daniel Day Lewis = Oscar
Me = Stunned
That's ridiculous.
Jokinen should get 20 games.
for what? a freak accident?
scary stuff. good to hear he is now stable at the hospital.
That is scary as hell. Kudos to the staff and it's great to hear that Zednik is going to be okay, for real...you don't play hockey because you think it's safe, but Jesus, how can you account for that?
Flyerfan...you're a jagoff. Go sit in the corner.
Another scary situation. ESPN is featuring Geno this morning and saying Sid's now the the second best player on the team.
Finally recognition/MVP candidate?
It would be scary if in the end the vote is split and ovie gets it.............just sayin.
(Love it when when they show hilites and put the twinkly star on the puck.)
Old enough to remember Malarchuk. Didn't ever want to see a repeat. Glad to hear Zed's okay. You could see the horror in the crowd's faces. Haunting.
On a different note, anyone know if the early playoff rounds will be Versus exclusive again? (Early budget planning/note to self/order versus for month?)
If that happened to Crosby during a Flyers game, their fans would come over here and start talking about how he dived during the sequence to get cut.
Good one flyer hater.
Gary Roberts would have butterflied it and finished the game.
wow. that's beyond scary. not that zednik reads c-blog or anything, but i just want to put some good vibes out in the universe for him: get well soon, buddy.
echoing hip, emily, and anon @ 6:05am: kudos to the medical staff for literally saving zed's life.
Oh wow. I'm beyond glad to know that he was attended to quickly and was stabilized. That is so incredibly scary. I honestly don't know how the players finished the game after seeing something so life & death. All good thoughts and prayers going out to him today.
I wonder how many of those people in the crowd were there for the Clint Malarchuk game. It's accidents like this that are why Chris Simon got 30 games (and probably deserved more) for stomping on Jarkko Ruutu.
I'm sure Malarchuk getting his throat cut is something every NHL trainer reviews when he's coming up through the ranks, but to keep calm when someone's life is on the line and provide the proper first aid deserves nothing but the highest praise.
Anyone else just the tiniest bit upset that it took a player nearly dying on the ice to get hockey into the top 8 stories on SportsCenter this morning?
Yes Nathan. Zed could have died easily if he wasn't able to get to his bench like that... but ESPN doesn't care because the Pro-Bowl was yesterday.
What a fucking joke.
MALARCHUK
holy crap.. i must have turned off that game about 2 timeclock minutes before that happened. very glad i did.. wow
"That's ridiculous.
Jokinen should get 20 games."
Only a Flyers fan would joke about a life-threatening injury. The guy could have died right there on the ice. We get it, your team is a bunch of goons and you don't like being called on it, but have a just a small amount of class.
I'm glad Zednik is OK. That is easily one of the scariest and most horrific things I've ever seen.
Wow. Like everyone else, I'm really happy to see Zed's resting comfortably. That's a terrifying situation.
Should the game have been canceled? Maybe. Kukla's Korner brought up a good point - the captains didn't seem to be consulted when the decision to play on was made. I can't imagine concentrating on hockey after seeing that.
The looks on the fans' faces in the background is just completely mind-blowing.
The lead story on TSN's SportsCentre this morning was this game, and some 'reporter' who interviewed Olli Jokinen after the game asked him how scary it was for him. Jokinen replied, "What do you think? What kind of fucking question is that?"
Reporter = Joke
Could he not come up with a better question? Maybe something more sensitive?
Jokinen also said that there's bigger things than 8 minutes left in the game. It sounded like he said that they shouldn't have finished the game. Maybe if Coley had consulted the captains, the game would have been cancelled...
Perhaps making neck guards mandatory as they are in youth hockey would be a prudent idea?
Good thing this happened in Buffalo where they have excellent hospitals...a result of so many people crossing the border to escape socialized medicine.
ashley > I think his response to the reporter was rather kind... he probably had a few more choice words for the guy. Seriously, how do you ask a question like that? Wow.
Did anyone see the piece covering this on ESPN? The announcer came on over the loud speaker and told the crowd Zednik was in stable condition and the place went crazy, tons of emotion. They said that him being in stable condition is the only reason why they continued.
lady jaye - I agree. After a question like that, I expected Jokinen to jump him
Malkin named NHL #1 Star yesterday....Ovechkin was #3.
First thing. Flyerfan you are waste of skin. Go crawl back under your rock.
Second, I urge all fellow Pens fans to go to the Panthers web site and post your get well wishes for Zednik. They are going to compile them and give them to him and his family when he returns home.
Scary stuff yesterday. Props to the medical staff in Buffalo you probably saved his life.
Idk who writes this blog, but Downie is not the flyers enforcer, and they WILL knock you guys out of the playoffs, that is if you don't go out in 5 games AGAIN
Zednik = beast
@ Anon 11:04, I'm surprised ESPN even covered it. Then again, it did have blood involved and is still hard to watch. I'm sure some big cheese in Bristol will make this story a topic on PTI and ATH, where they will blast the NHL for their lack of safety.
Jarrko Ruutu was faking every bit of that by Simon, yea it was bad, but he didnt hurt him i think Laraque should have gotten punished. And if he were punished it shoulda been more games than simon
anon @ 12:56 said:
Downie is not the flyers enforcer
So that's supposed to be Cote? I hope for his sake he can get a refund on those fighting lessons!
First Big George Laraque played Zamboni with his face versus the Pens, then Orr destroyed him Saturday.
Flyers Enforcer? = JOKE
they WILL knock you guys out of the playoffs, that is if you don't go out in 5 games AGAIN
While the Pens may have been knocked out in 5 last season, at least they weren't playing golf like the Flyers.
The Flyers have been choking since 1975, so I really wouldn't go there if I were you.
You're probably the same troll that said you'd win on Sunday.
A little ointment might help relieve that stinging ass you're suffering from today.
PS: At least have the GUTS to attach a NAME to your diarrhea of the mouth like a man.
Faking or not, it still doesn't change the fact that Chris Simon DELIBERATELY STOMPED ON ANOTHER PLAYER WITH HIS SKATE BLADE! In the last 20 years we've seen players nearly lose their lives (Malarchuk, Zednik) or their hands (Donald Audette, Dan Boyle) just from accidental cuts from skate blades -- to intentionally contact another person with what is essentially a knife on your foot is a criminal action, even though Simon wasn't charged with anything. I don't care how much that other player gets under your skin, that's completely inexcusable. And if you think otherwise, you need to find another sport to watch, because I don't want you associated with hockey.
I think about the neck protection thing alot, especially when some 240 pound halfwit in my rec league drives the net on me like friggin Kevin Stevens in his heyday.
It's surprising that it doesn't happen more often.
It's been said but worth saying again - props to Zednik for getting to the bench and props to everyone that got him attention quickly.
It almost wasn't a great day for hockey.
didn't know if anyone saw the pic of the gary roberts jumbotron message on empty netters,
http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/emptynetters/
lets go buffalo:
Simon wasn't even a part of what was going on at the time. He chose to get himself involved.
Simon deliberately slew-footed Ruutu which is an automatic game misconduct. Then after that cowardly act, he committed the most cowardly act a hockey player can do by stomping on Ruutu's achilles tendon.
Ruutu didn't "act" at all. He got up and went to the dressing room.
The FACT that even the Islander's management suspended Simon and told him to get help shows that not even their own team was willing to put up with such behavior.
The league looked at Laraque's hit on Downie and judged rightfully so that it was just a hockey incident, the punishment of ejection was enough, and there was no intent to injure.
Deal with it.
I know this is way off topic, and probably a few days late, but in the spirit of yesterday's ass-reaming of the Flyers, I give you video of "tough guy" Riley Cote getting Demolished by George "The Stache" Parros....

Not sure if you guys have seen this, but the writer for the Pens' website participated in the fantasty camp (as a goalie) this past weekend and NHL.com had him write a short blog about it.

Being involved in medicine, I'm not easily shocked, but that took my breath away when I watched it. Holy shit.
Quick thinking on his part to put pressure on the wound and huge kudos to the staff that literally saved his life.
anon @ 2:02,
"Being involved in medicine"
Knowing anatomy, wouldn't you agree that it's much more likely that it was his right jugular vein and not really his carotid artery that got slashed?
The jugular is much more superficial in relationship while the carotid is deeper and more toward the 'windpipe'.
Severing either is not good, but feeding the brain is more important than draining it.
It's true, Downie isn't the Flyers' enforcer. Saying that he's an enforcer would imply that he actually fights cleanly. He's just a retard who runs around taking every opportunity that he can get to cheap shot the opposition. No wonder Flyers fans like him so much. In a sense, Downie symbolizes all that is Philadelphia - mediocre but dying to be relevant, lacking in class, a chip on the shoulder the size of a Buick, and actually thinking that adjectives like "tough," "mean" and "dirty" are complimentary.
The Flyers' "enforcer" would be Cote. You know, the guy who keeps getting his ass handed to him by every heavyweight or decent middleweight in the league.
And anyone who can defend Simon's stomping on Ruutu on ANY grounds needs to do us all a favor and give up on watching hockey. And don't let on that you're a fan while you're at it. The league has a bad enough reputation because of asswipe cheapshot artists like Simon and Downie.
ANON @ 12:56 PM - Downie's not necessarily the Flyers' enforcer, so to speak, but I've heard Flyers fans fawning over this kid like preteen girls talking about the star quarterback. All I've heard from Flyers fans is how this kid is tailor-made for the Flyers, how he's such a throwback to the Broad Street Bullies days, and how he was just as likely to beat you with his fists as he was to beat you with a goal.
Turns out it's nothing but a myth.
As far as the playoffs go, those are big predictions coming from a fan of a team whose provided some of the biggest playoff choke jobs this side of the Ottawa Senators.
Want to talk playoffs? Let's talk about the last time your boys made it to the Stanley Cup Finals, way back in 1996-97. Think back. Dig up those supressed memories of that joke of a series against the Red Wings. Four-game sweep by the Wings in which they outscored the Flyers 16-6. Legion of Doom, indeed.
At least when the Pens make it all the way to the Finals, they know how to seal the deal.
@Everybody!!
Can we NOT saturate our glorious cblog with retorts to whomever keeps coming on here and "hating?"
Honestly, it's all they're looking for. They just want to stir up the water and feed us the shit sandwich that the Pens have been feeding their teams.
Sit back and enjoy the ride and let the a-holes keep making their comments... but try not to waste your time by writing something back to them.
LET'S GO PENS!!
Huge respect to Zednik for being able to handle himself in that situation. Massive props to the medical staff at HSBC as well. That was about the best I could imagine anyone handling something like that in a game.
I think the game should have been canceled. I can't fathom having to continue play after that happening :/
It's as if Flyer fans are living in alternate hockey universe than the rest of us. For any Flyer fan to talk about the playoff failures of other teams is just comical. Does this bring back any memories?
WOOOOOO
My thoughts and prayers are definitely with Zhitnik. Scary thing. First the linesman and now this. Just one scary accident after another.
Anon @ 2:02: when i watched the slo-mo instant replay, i had the same reaction. completely disgusting.
For Zednik to have the presence of mind to put pressure on the cut and the ability to skate to the bench in a few second's time is truly amazing.
I love how those douchebag jobbers came on Cblog to try to job and we're not even talking about anything but a man who almost lost his life. You, sirs, are classless human beings in which the best part of you ran down your mother's leg.
its nice to see roberts stuff is still going up on the jumbotron when you can text to it during the second intermission.
-Jay
Penglose, hahahahahahaha
got my WWGRD t-shirt and bumper sticker in the mail today...unreal
Stillman and Commodore to Ottawa for Eaves and Corvo. gotta love the one comment " Won't Help, They'll still be out in the first round."
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=229406&hubname=nhl
Jim Rome just mentioned this incident... then followed it up with a cheapshot on hockey. All class Romey.
Jim Rome... Jim Everett didn't finish the job.
I left this comment in the Flyers game recap, but since no one reads comments once their attached entry is no longer the top one, here it is again: Ottawa's equipment manager needs to give Commodore #64.
blackngold - you're 100% right. I normally don't feed the trolls, but there are some things that you just shouldn't joke about, and a situation like the Zednick one (or the Simon attempt to injure) are among them. I apologize for any negativity I added to C-blog today.
Nathan - I would buy a Commodore jersey if that were to happen. Without question.
Nathan: why 64?
b/c commodore 64 is an ollllld ass video games system.
showingourageblog
ohhhh ok i get it now
does anyone have the link to the zednik picture that was up this morning with the caption "stunned?"
Holy crap is anybody watching the PHO @ DAL game?
There's NOBODY there. It's worse than a game in Jersey.
Adam, Rome used to be one of the few announcers who would prop the NHL when possible. I haven't heard his show in quite a few months, but what exactly was said?
Maybe I'm alone but I've loathed Jim Rome forever. I won't watch that mechanical, monotone turd for a second.
You know Roberts has to see the jumbotron messages...I wonder if they give him shit about it all.
Got to see him dominating Ottawa when he played for Toronto...they re-capped one of the playoff series on the NHL network over the weekend. It was gold. Darcy Tucker actually could play a little back then, too.
Did anyone see this story...
http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=3240754
sounds like hockey players are turning into football players...jk
I can't believe that kind of stuff doesn't happen more in the NHL with skates and legs flying around...just a terrible scene.
http://inthewheelhouse.blogspot.com
Wow, I can't even watch the youtube video. I was gonna watch the game but I decided against it. Thank goodness or I would have screamed so loud that Malkin's relatives in Russia would be wondering what was going on.
Random Flyers fans who blog on here because they have no life, please, go back to your blogs and comment away about how crappy your team is, how Hatcher is a waste, and how Cote and Downie are your boys. Frankly, you are quite annoying with your constant bashing of actual talent. (PS Where was your captain? Hanging out with Pensblog Charlie again? Smith and over half the team didn't even do anything in the game. The only guy I have seen perform against us was ... RJ, a native of Plum Borough which is a suburb of Pittsburgh.) Looks like Gag-me got another concussion, but from Staal? He's getting soff...
Jokinen probably feels like shit after that freak accident. You ought to be ashamed of yourself for saying something so rude.
The Simon stomp on Ruutu may not have caused damage on Ruutu's leg but that's not the point. He deliberately attempted to hurt Ruutu out of spite. You can seriously injure a player by stomping, nonetheless with a skate, on a person's legs. Grow up and realize the crime fit the punishment.
BGL has nothing to do with anything. Downie should have won an Oscar for Best Actress. Do you realize how big he is? One shove and I could have been smacking my head off the boards. The League didn't call anything because their was nothing to call.
I send my prayers out to you Zed ... hopefully, you manage to get better!!
man, i would love to hear gary roberts's thoughts on the WWGRD stuff. can the Malkins come back for the playoffs? F this, can't the Pens just move Mom and Pops Malkin here permanently? Geno is nuts right now, fucking nuts. Malone's expression after the Hartnell job was indeed priceless. Re-sign Malone, he is a worlds different player than years past.
man, I think this is the first time that I brought a psycho Philly fan over to YouTube to spew all kinds of garbage...who would've thought that my simple comment about a sweet win over the cryers would do it?
I think that jmmul1 is fixin for a visit from Charlie...
ASHLEY = Instigator.
:)
damn straight!!
haha
ASHLEY - Do you have a link to the Youtube clip you're talking about?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dczo5iB4-E
Oh I didn't even finish reading the let's go buffalo's comment ... Downie returned to the game and had a fight ... then was he then not "hurt" by your standards, meaning BGL deserved no suspension?
Zednikblog...
Canaan mentioned on the LGP message boards that Zednik had a press conference of some sort today, and he apparently asked the doctors when he could start training again.
Zednik - definitely not a baseball player.
Suggestionblog...
Florida comes to town a week from tomorrow. While Zednik likely won't make the trip with the team, it'd be nice to here the crowd acknowledge Zednik somehow, perhaps a "Zednik" chant or something like that.
ASHLEY - I stand corrected.
Enforcer!
hahahahahahahaha
I'm killing myself laughing over here. This guy has no fucking clue.
ashley....
look at the dude you are arguing with
http://mob12.photobucket.com/albums/a223/jmmul1/yeah012.jpg
he's a complete knob. check his youtube vids of him singing tom petty. lolz. he is the philadelphia melvin.
hahaha that's great canaan
I took a quick peek at him singing Free Fallin'...couldn't get through the first verse. ugh
You're all a bunch of worthless assholes. This blog sucks ass. We're still 4-1 against you fuckers. Good stuff Penglose, it's about time someone told these ignorant fans the truth, kudos.
killadelphia: is that you, jmmul1? Did you come in search of Charlie??? He's gettin' his ass ready for ya...
Wow, Philly retards have been out in full force the past few days.
BTW, Philly is hell on Earth
KILLADELPHIA - You can have your 4-1 record against us so far.
Bottom line:
The view is great from first place in the division.
a jmmul/melvin jibjab in teh future?
Killadelphia- Wasnt it you that said the criers were gonna sweep the pens? Yeah, not gonna happen and now you cry about you being 4-1. Get over it, your not even worth it. I just feel bad for you and city because your ALWAYS the example of bad sportsmanship with all your sports, fans and the teams.
Only losers post youtube videos of them self singing songs. poorly.

2. Informal.
a. a person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor or, esp., a felony: a two-time loser. jmmul1
b. a person who has failed at a particular activity: a loser at marriage. Killadelphia

3. Slang. a misfit, esp. someone who has never or seldom been successful at a job, personal relationship, etc. 90% of Philadelphia's citizens
I'm back in Kansas (sigh) but it means I have more regular access to my computer.
A few things about when I was in Pittsburgh:
1. Max Talbot is a fucking beast. You never hear his name much on the radio broadcasts but seeing him live it was as though he was from The Matrix.
2. Much love to whoever put "Flyers=Stunned" on the jumbotron Sunday. I tried to send "Commit to the Avian," but it was too late in the intermission to go up on the screen.
3. Sorry for my blurry-ass, whited-out National Anthem pics. It's hard trying to take a picture using a cell phone but that's no excuse. Other people did a much better job than I did.
4. Jeff Jimmerson > Whoever that blonde girl was. What was she, some sort of American Idol winner? She sucked. The sheer power of Jimmerson's voice almost brought tears to my eyes.
5. Mark Recchi jerseys (real ones, not replicas) are on super sale at PenStation. I almost got one but they were too short. They cost less than regularly priced replicas, if I remember correctly.
6. Stoosh, did you eat at Fat Heads before the game Sunday? I thought I heard somebody say, "Stoosh," but couldn't figure out if you were there or not.
7. Whoever decided that putting kielbasa and pierogies on a sandwich should be given a Nobel Prize.
I plan on putting up some sort of blog relating to my trip so anyone who cares can see what a psudo-outsider things of the Steel City.
I swear to Gary Roberts, that was the best vacation of my life. Three games, three wins.
Pittsburgh Penguins=First Place in the Atlantic.
LET'S GO PENS!
Oh, and speaking of Stoosh-stradamus, I'd just like to bring up something he said in Commentorblog a while ago.
"The Flyers fans claiming that they have this division can go fuck themselves with the business end of a Civil War-era bayonette." -Stoosh
Boo-fucking-yah.
Fleury29: that sandwich of which you speak is probably the best thing i've ever eaten in my life. EVER.
EEEEVVV-EEERRR.
You picked a great weekend(weather notwithstanding)!
FLEURY29 - That was not me at Fathead's, but that place may be one of the only things that can give Gary Roberts a run for his money in terms of sheer, unbridled awesomeness. I used to work at the PNC Bank that's kinda-sorta across the street, and many a lunch was spent there...part of the reason why I'm no longer in game shape, so to speak.
And perhaps now would be a good time for Philly fans to discuss how they "have the division".
Not quite sure if it was your presence or mumsy Malkin's, but come back soon! The odds of seeing three straight wins was pretty slim, friend. If I were u i'd buy a lottery ticket or two tomorrow.

Stoosh/ ashley: That kid is too much!! what a joke!!!
STOKES - This YouTube clown is just too much. As they say, sometimes the jokes just write themselves.
hahaha this guy is just walking right into it
I was jobbin' that twit earlier today and had to come back to get in on all the fun.
fleury29, I was at the game saturday and sent "whattup fleury29?!" to the jumbo but it didnt make the cut.
I was at fatheads on saturday, the wrong day, artery clogger for me.
I can never decide between that, the Sweet MB, Bender or the south side slopes.
Ashley said:

More like he STEPPED in it.
okay guys, charlie + jmmul1 photoshop sent in to the staff. I suck at doing 'shops, but I just had to...

what youtube is everyone talking about?
-dr
Staff - this YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dczo5iB4-E
dear god
I honestly cannot even believe that tom petty cover...
-dr
Ummmm...the "air guitar" video of his is even more lame if that's even humanly possible.
staff - okay, this is gonna make me seem like the biggest wuss around, and i understand if you job the hell outta me, but could you not post that photoshop i sent you of that jerk from youtube? i don't know, it's just bothering me a bit...like I don't want to stoop to that jerk's level...
this is a bit hypocritical of me, since i love all the 'shops people send it, but whatev. something just ain't sitting right...
ASHLEY - Why would anyone job you for that? That discussion over there was the equivalent of a fight between Bob Probert in his prime and a beer-leaguer who takes himself too seriously. The best enforcers always let up when they know the opposition is overmatched.
:)
That's part of the code.
haha thanks Stoosh.
Something just didn't sit right with me regarding the whole thing. I have a feeling that he is younger than he says, and I didn't want to be responsible for putting the face of a minor in a photoshop with Charlie. I don't know what the laws are like, and I'd rather not take a chance...
I just thought that people may job me for wussin' out, so to speak.
