GameDay (55) -- Kings @ Pens

1:00pm

Anyone even remember the Kings game from last season?
You want to talk about pathetic game recaps, you talk about the one we did for that game.
[Hasta L.A. Vista, Kings. PENS WIN]
What a horrible excuse for a recap.

With the highly anticipated Flyers game coming on Sunday afternoon, this Kings game is the ultimate trap game.
The Kings have the worst record in the world, and the Pens may have a false sense of security playing on their home turf.

Our friends from [Battle of California] will have the Kings side of the story.
.........................................................................

STOREBLOG

We had a couple of designs in our heads on what we wanted a Commentorblog shirt to look like.

We wanted to dig a little deeper for those devoted warriors of the keyboard, so here you go.

We hope you all like it.
We needed a date and timestamp to make the shirt feel genuine, so we used the approximate date and time (EST) the Pens won their first cup.

Other stuff we added:

Still in the works:
  • Solid Conkblock City shirt
  • Solid Pensblog.com shirt
  • A better Winter Classic shirt
.........................................................

Cool little thing on John Barbaro from last year.

Thanks to Verle H.

John B. sent this picture in.
It could change your life.

Go Pens

Happy Hockey Day In Canada!

CBC coverage starts at noon EST today (thank you, Center Ice). For those 1st timers w/CI, this is an all day event covering hockey 'hosted' by Winkler, Manitoba this year. They'll be showing/reporting from mite games, Juniors from all over Canada along with their triple header of games which start at 3pm. It's just a great day to reaffirm why Hockey is the greatest sport in the World!!!

I'll be planted on the couch right after returning from the Pens game to follow coverage up until the wee hours of Sunday morning....

Will today be Alex Goligoski's 1st game today?....HCMT might not want to break things up,the D played pretty decent on Thursday.

On the goalie side, who ya got? Sabu or Conk?
I'm guessing Sabu....but after his last shaky start, HCMT might have 2nd thoughts....

Let's Go Pens!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Dr. Turkleton - Happy Hockey Day in Canada to you too!!

My ass will be firmly planted in front of my TV all friggin day. Thirteen hours of hockey is a beautiful thing.

Yes this could be trapblog waiting to fuck us up. Doubt it. Anyone who doubts the Pens have what it takes to win are either a Flyers fan or stupid. Young and developing talent on a team with a solid work ethic is a solid thing to behold.

Dethrone the Kings today and mess up the Fillyliars tomorrow. What a weekend. Sweet. Got tickets for tomorrow and I swear I will be screaming my head off tomorrow. If you can't get up for this then stay home. Please.

Working for the WE? I am living for this stuff. Its like watching your kids grow up. Its primal and intense and I cannot explain it. Hope that the Kings are ready to take it on the crown too.

stokes said...

Isn't everyday hockey day in Canada? That's the number one reason i wish i was Canadian. (The number two reason, in case you are wondering, is Bryan Adams.)

In any case, I dont have Center Ice, but i will be attending the Pens game, for which i will be leaving for in approximately one half hour.

DO IT.

Flyer Hater said...

Just a huge game today. If we beat the Kings, the Flyers could certainly lose to the Rangers because they've been awful against them this year. We could have a 4 point lead in the division by Monday if all goes well.

LETS.

GO.

PENS.

It's kind of embarrassing to think that Luc is a personal hero of mine when you show pictures like that. I like to think he just wanted to fit in with everyone else in the NHL.

You guys might be confused today when you watch the game, so I hope this helps:

22-Brian Boyle. He's the giant guy. Good, young, only been up 3 games.

5- Peter Harrold. Young, soft defenseman. Take a run at him and he'll just give you the puck.

28- Matt Moulson. He looks weird, and that's probably the best thing I have to say about him.

We don't have Blake or Nagy, but we've still been playing pretty well lately. Oh, and Jordan Staal looks like the bad guy from The Da Vinci Code. (Has anyone made the joke before, I was proud of it.)

LAKingsFanyo said...

hahaahahah, we beat the best team in hockey and we won't beat your sorry asses? Get ready for the smackdown.

WEEEEEEEESTSIDE!

Ashley said...

Okay, so now fans of the Kings are coming here to talk smack? Is anyone else starting to think that it's just one person who pretends to be fans of every team the Pens play? Someone who wants to stir things up on C-blog?

And stokes, yeah I guess you could say that just about every day is hockey day in Canada. You can find a hockey game on TSN/RDS/CBC/Sportsnet on most days of the week. But today is special because CBC has crews all over the country to give us the feel-good, grassroots stories from Newfoundland to BC.

It's gonna be a good day in Halifax :)

Charlie's really getting around, eh? Now it's 6 Senators - I wonder who's on Charlie's Conquered list.

LOVE the date/time on the cblog shirt. Inspired.

Ashley, are there bad days in Halifax? When I was there it didn't seem like that could be possible. Fantastic city.

The Ducks beat 3 Atlantic teams this week. Wish Philly wasn't the one that got away, but still, 3 of 4 is a big help to us. Giftbasketblog.

Ashley said...

haha you're right pensgirl, Halifax is a great city. Not too many bad days around here. :)

canaanregulatesblog said...

hey rudykelly...

we know a good bit about moulson b/c we drafted him. im glad to see he made it to the show. he became a free agent when the pens declined to sign him.

Flyer Hater said...

It looks like Crapourin is starting today.

RudyKelly said...

Oh, cool, I didn't know that. You'd think I would since I'm a professional web logger, but little did you know that I'm not good at my job.

I've actually liked Moulson this season, despite his elongated head. He's got pretty good speed and can finish if someone sets him up. I see him being a fairly solid third-line scorer. We've had Brian Willsie filling that role recently, so as long as Moulson can skate down the rink without pooping himself, I'll be happy.

Stoosh said...

ASHLEY - I'm very jealous.

Like Stokes said, every day is hockey day in Canada; anyplace where they teach kids to skate at the same time they're learning to walk is OK in my book.

One thing I want to do is take a trip up into Canada and hit a bunch of the major junior games.

My old home of Erie has the Otters in the OHL, so some OHL games at visiting arenas would be a must. I'd love to see London, Kitchener, Sault Ste. Marie, Ottawa (love to see a game in the old Civic Center).

If I hit the "Q", it'd have to be Halifax (of course!), Quebec (Le Colisee...I love those old NHL arenas), Rimouski (gotta see where Sid got his start), maybe Cape Breton and Val d'Or.

Of course, time and money to do this is whole other issue. I have a tough enough time making the two hours back to Erie to see an Otters game.

Next weekend is Hockey Weekend Across America, but it's just not the same thing here. It's a good start, though.

Stoosh said...

MIKE COSTA - Are you going be up there tomorrow as well? My seats for the Philly beatdown tomorrow are in Fi. If so, let me know.

Ashley said...

Stoosh - if you're gonna take a trip through the Q and you come down from Quebec to Nova Scotia, you need to check out my hometown team in Moncton. Wasn't long ago that the Wildcats was thisclose to winning the Memorial Cup with Ted Nolan behind the bench and Brad Marchand on the ice. They're in a bit of a rebuilding mode right now, but I think they're gonna be on the upswing. Besides, Moncton is a great city!

ASHLEY - I thought I put Moncton on the list, but after further review, I realized I didn't. Oooopsblog.

I forgot that's where Nolan coached. In fact, I'm looking at the roster from that 05-06 team and I recognized another name: Jhase Sniderman played goaltender for Erie for a while; he was part of the first rebuilding effort following our first OHL title and Memorial Cup appearance back in 01-02 (Erie's now on it's second rebuilding effort after the first one didn't work so well).

I'll have make Moncton a must-see. It sounds like a really nice place. Plus, it looks like you have a Don Cherry's Sports Grill up there. Roadtripblog! WOOO!

Stoosh - Don Cherry's is an awesome place to eat. They have a brand new place in Dieppe, and it's absolutely amazing in there. Each booth has its own LCD TV so you can watch whatever you want (like SportsCentre), and the walls are just plastered with signed jerseys and posters from just about every hockey player you can imagine. I think I saw 2 signed Crosby jerseys hanging - a Rimouski jersey and a Pens jersey.

The Sports Rock is also a good place to eat...if you're in Moncton, there will certainly never be a shortage of restaurants. I hear it has the most restaurants per capita in all of North America.

lmao snoopyjode yes you and homer are right it looks like quite an exciting game we're missin out on here. maybe this is happening because i got random bonus fsn san jose feed last nite on philly's comcast channel up here and got to watch the sharks/jackets game.

Stoosh said...

ASHLEY - Don Cherry's sounds a lot like a place were used to have here in Pittsburgh called Philthy McNasty's (Philthy's was a Canadian chain, actually).

When I lived up on the Mt. Washington section of Pittsburgh, it was a one-mile walk from my place, then a short trip down the Monongahela Incline to Station Square which is where Philthy's was. Waytooclosetohomeblog. That was just all sorts of bad. We used to go down there for Pens games all the time. Best cheeseburgers I've ever had. Philthy's cheeseburger with a big friggin' glass of Molson or Labatt's = awesome!

There's a Sports Rock Cafe in Pittsburgh. Pretty good stuff there, too, but it's a little too Steelers-centric for me.

This talk of Don Cherry's Sports Grills and Philthy McNasty's is doing wonders for someone who is trying to watch what he eats and get into shape. :)

Ashley said...

Stoosh - Philthy McNasty's...haha great name

This I can pretty much guarantee - no matter where you go in Moncton, no place will be Steelers-centric...or NFL-centric for that matter. All sports bars/grills places that I can think of are all about hockey.

Ugh all this food talk makes me hungry. I should probably get something, but I don't want to miss anything from the Detroit/Toronto game. Food...hockey...how to decide?

Speaking of hockey, Toronto just scored on the PP. Hmmm, will Detroit lose another game to a basement-dwelling team?

THOUGHTS...

1. I'll say it again...I'm thrilled to death that Evgeni Malkin is just incapable of carrying this team. I mean, if 18 points in nine games since Sid went out is great and all, but imagine what he'd do if he was in fact capable of carrying this team.

2. Creditwherecreditisdueblog. Geno absolutely devastated LaBarbera on that third goal. But it was Whitney's sick fake back to the point that opened up the lane for him to get the puck to Geno, thereby allowing Geno to commence his devastation of LaBarbera.

Whitney's pass = Sick, man...sick!

Accompanying sound here.

3. Marc Crawford looks like George McFly.

Flyer Hater said...

Cryers lose, tomorrow could be seperationblog in the Atlantic. Maybe the biggest game of the year.

Stoosh said...

It's time to break out the kilts and the bagpipes, kids.

67 points and first place. Philly is losing 2-0 right now with about four minutes left. Barring a comeback, we now look forward defending the Division Lead against Philly tomorrow afternoon.

And to prep you for tomorrow, we turn not to Maximus. We forsake even William Wallace and Capt. Steven Hiller.

We turn instead to Declan from "The Rundown" for the March on Mellon Arena.

Note the coincidental references in that clip to Philly (must've been FX's Philly station) and HATCHER.

Time to get back on the path.

ASHLEY - The food talk IS bad. I'm trying to watch what I eat and get in shape because a few friends and I are putting together some people to get back on the ice and play some hockey. I need to 1) get new gear (just got skates a few weeks ago) and 2) get in shape first...one two-minute shift right now and I'd be more wasted than Britney Spears.

Now you get Detroit/Toronto as well? Let's see...perusing our channels here...I get golf, college hoops, more college hoops, "The Bronx Is Burning", more college hoops and the Pro Bowl practices on the NFL Network.

God bless the NHL Network.

Ashley said...

Stoosh - "one two-minute shift right now and I'd be more wasted than Britney Spears"

haha good one!

I hear ya about the food thing. I'm trying to watch what I eat too because I have noticed that people tend to watch me eat, being a future dietitian and all. Besides, I tend to feel less crappy when I don't eat the deep fried chicken fingers and fries. Who woulda thunk it?

Toronto's still up 1-0, almost halfway through the second...An upset would be nice, especially for the crowd at the ACC.

God bless my antenna for picking up CBC :) Game 1 of a triple-header = sweet.

I hope Detroit doesn't lose to Toronto. Being a Detroit transplant, my loathing of the Leafs... let's just say I miss seeing the games between the Leafs and Wings back in the '90's.

Was listening to the call in show on the radio after the game and someone called in and asked Bourque if he was the true creator of the Murphy Dump. He said he wasn't, and it was something that back then they all practiced during uhh...practice.

Another point that someone made is it seems like Malkin is celebrating his goals with his teammates more, instead of taking off like a wildman. He's embracing the team more. Perhaps the silver lining to Sid's cloud of an injury. Also heard that Geno did some sick move in the third period where his stick was knocked from his hands and he kicked it back up to himself without breaking stride. Somebody anybody get the youtubed

stokes said...

I second Flyer Hater. If malkin was any good, he would have scored that empty netter.

Johnnyv: i watched malkin do that, and i still wasn't sure of what i saw.

I hope the Pens decide to play 60 minutes tomorrow, becuase when they figured they had it in the bag today, they certainly didnt play as hard....

I hate philly. oh my God, do i hate philly.
