Here We Go Penguins Here We Go

Of course, the big news on Tuesday was the Senators re-signing Ray Emery.

3 years -- $9.5 million

At his press conference Emery gave up three goals on six shots.

Sens also re-signed Orange Sherbert.

We've kept quiet about this for a while, but now is the time to discuss.

Marc-Andre Fleury is a solid NHL goaltender. But he is expendable in terms of who else we would want to keep in Pittsburgh.

Crosby -- Stays.
Malkin -- Stays.

Fleury or Staal -- Who goes?
(This is all moot if Shero can sign both.)

Do you want pay Fleury big bucks while letting Staal go?

Or sign a veteran goalie in free agency (or make a trade for said goaltender)?

As always...

Daryl Katz, the billionaire wanting to purchase the Edmonton Oilers, promises to spend to the salary cap and help build a new arena if the sale is approved.

RBK Blog

The Sharks unveiled their new logo.
It looks like something my retarded 5-year-old cousin Peter made in Windows Paint.

This logo makes the Sharks look like a minor-league team.

Oh, well.
I guess we can expect some more logo changes as teams get closer to revealing their new RBK uniforms.

Suck it.

We re-iterate...

The Blackhawks will be sick.

DoubtAboutIt does an ode to Pittsburgh Sports blogs.

They parodied us extremely well.
Funny stuff.

Good friend from commentorblog Loser Chris has a blog going on.
Check it out here.

TheGuinsblog is back..

And lastly

Cdubbs from commentblog debuts his new blog as well.

Why do we hate Candance Cameron?

Very nice

She is related to Kirk Cameron.
Who has pretty much become a monster.
(Click than link, we dare you)
Now, getting religious beliefs shoved down your throat is awful.
But could you imagine Mike Seaver telling you how to act?
If there is one person begging for a Gary Roberts prank, it is the Mike Seaver.
Words cannot even describe this guy

Lesson learned.
Stephanie Tanner grew up to be way hotter.

A Winter in the Sun
Game #54
February 8, 2007
Don't You Wish Your Hockey Team Was Hot Like Ours. PENS WIN.

5 - 4

In the second period, the Flyers came close a couple times to jumping out to a 3-1 lead.
Fleury is unreal right now.
There is no need to elaborate.

Picture: In aiding Marc-Andre Fleury, Mark Eaton uses the gymnastics skills that landed him the Platinum Medal at the 1988 Olympics in Calgary.
He remains the only Olympic athlete in history to be given the Platinum.
And remains the only athlete to medal in gymnastics at the Winter Olympics.

Am I the only one not impressed with this game? I mean I'm thrilled we pulled off the win but we had a lot of defensive breakdowns and sloppy passing. Luckily it was against the flyers and not someone who would easily take advantage of our mistakes and not allow us to score 4. But hey, enough bitching, we win, 10-0-2 streak.. can't complain there, eh?

Mark "God" Eaton: 14-3-1

True, the Blackhawks will be sick.... until Wirtz decides that they're too expensive and trades them for a bag of cracked hockey pucks.

staff, i agree with your assessment that keeping staal > than keeping fleury. staal's performances overall progressively got better and better, while fleury, at best, remains inconsistant. not that i want to see MAF go anywhere, i'm just saying in broad terms that staal is the horse i'd bet on if i had to choose between them. besides, if need be, eaton can just take over fleury's starting spot, since (when he was healthy) he did most of the work anyways...

and OH MY GOD, if the pens job their uniforms the way the sharks did to theirs with that new logo, i'm going to riot.

snoopyjode said...

oh, and i nearly jumped out of my seat when kirk cameron and his "friend" materialized on my screen seemingly out of nowhere. holy crap, what happened to that guy?!

Spencemo said...

Kirk Cameron has become one of those people that "found Jesus". Personally, I think that if you're doing it right, you never lost him. But, what do I know...

Sid + Ron Francis = Day 97

snoopyjode said...

wow, spence: your suggestion for today's "day math" is the best equation i have ever seen in my life.

Most good, young goalies (Cam Ward, Ryan Miller, Henrik Lundqvist, Ray Ray) are signing deals worth about $3 to $4 million.

They've all accomplished more than Fleury, but he has the potential to be as good (if not better) than all of them.

So, ideally I think you could sign Fleury for four years now at about $14 million ($3.5 average). That'd be more than reasonable for both sides, to me.

Which would mean, Whitney ($4), Fleury ($3.5) and Crosby ($8.7) would be tied down for a total cap figure of $16.2 million. In that case, I think the Pens could realistically keep Malkin and even Staal. They might end up spending about $30 million on five players...

But the cap is at $50 million and only figures to keep slowly going up. That should be more than enough room to fill out a solid lineip AROUND 5 crucial stars.

Nathan said...

The only problem is that Malkin and Staal go RFA before Sergei Gonchar's contract expires, so Gonchar would be eating up another $5 million in cap space. It'll take some fiscal contortions, but I think Shero can find a way to work it out to keep Malkin and Staal both. It'll probably mean having to peddle Gonchar off on somebody else, but you'd think that in two years, Whitney would be ready to fill Gonchar's role as the primary PP quarterback and top offensive defenseman.

Personally I feel that Malkin will be the one to jump ship. I just think that he will want to be the "face" of a franchise. AKA Jagr. He will not want to play his career in Sid's shadow. Staal seems different, he will be the one to stay. A "team" guy. Fleury, I believe this year will be his make or break year and determine his value. It may be wise to lock him up now while there is still a slight doubt in his consistency at a cheaper price.

Just my thoughts, but what do I know.

Jason said...

if anyone can keep them all together, its king shero. i still say if one of them has to go, it should be malkin. staal is just too damn valuable already. He can score, hes a great penalty killer and his defensive game is pretty solid. and from a cap standpoint, if you go by the current signings, you could have 2 fleurys for the kind of money malkin would get in free agency. not only that, but goalies take awhile to develop (see rick dipietro). fleury will be a franchise goalie, and i agree with luvmypens, his contract will depend on what he does this season

In my humble opinion, here's the priority for keeping our young studs;

1) Sid
2) MAF
3) Staal
4) Malkin

Geno has all the talent in the world, but I need to see more out of him before he moves up on that list.

Also, thanks for the plug guys. For the record, Snoop is just as big of a part of that blog as me, so I hesitate to consider it "my" blog.

Hooks Orpik said...

This is year 3 of the Gonchar contract, so he'd only have one more when the new contracts kick in.

I'm sure Shero has this all figured out.

Bottom line, I think it's feasible to retain the entire core. I really don't know why Malkin seems to take flak from fans or seem like the most expendable one.

IMO, other than Bing of course, Malkin is the most talented and best player on the roster. Why give that up??

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Jordan Staal and he's gonna be a beast, but Malkin is tremendous.

Spencemo said...

Let me just state, for the record, Snoop, that's as good as my math gets. I'm just surprised that no one else thought of it before I did...

The New Jersey Devils have signed Ian Moran.

Staal, Crosby, Fleury stay.

Malkin is the odd man out.

Jonny V said...

We all should bring up the priorities for signing the young Pens at the next team meeting with Shero. Seriously, I think my motto since the beginning of the season has been "In Shero I trust." Whoever he signs, cool beans. Whoever he lets go, c'est la vie.

snoopyjode said...

thanks for naming me as your coconspirator, loser chris! :) i thought it would be tacky to mention it myself.

Jason said...

truer words were never spoken, my friend!!! it would be quite a feat if he could get malkin, staal, and fleury to stay. here's hoping that they all follow bing's lead and sign for a little less than they're worth in order to stay together in pittsburgh and WIN THAT CUP!!!

credit where credit is due snoop!

loser chris, do u still hate Gary Roberts?

Loser Chris said...

Hate is a strong word. I just have bitterness over him not letting Ronnie have #10 in Carolina. Player numbers are a bigger deal to me than most people I think.

I was very happy to see Roberts re-sign, if that helps to clear things up at all.

The "younger brother" in the headline was Jordan. How long before we start seeing pictures of him wearing the "Drink Like a Champion Today" t-shirts?

Hooks Orpik said...

ahh you just beat me to the punch, nathan.

Looks like me and Jordan have an arrest in common!

youtube the real jordan staal, duh

i'd drop the link, but i'm at work

snoopyjode said...

here's the video wilsmith was talking about. i saw it a while back and thought it was funny until i saw the end. of course, i have to watch with no sound (no speakers here at work) and i never watched it at home.

anyways, fuck the guy that made this video.

snoopyjode said...

oh, and i wonder if the nhl has a "personal conduct policy" like the nfl? maybe buttman - i mean bettman will suspend staal for a season... (LOL)

wilsmith said...

yeah, if anything that video makes people like jordan more.

Yeah, I've been in *the exact* same boat as Jordan. [ ]

I, too, was asleep when the cops came, and they came because some jackass couldn't keep his fucking voice down. And so I get my own UAD citation at the ripe age of 19 with a 0.001 BAC.

I shit you not.

I had to take an alcoholism/drugs class and the judge found me not guilty, but it still pisses me off.

Kirk Cameron is creepy. Was it the power of Jesus that made him appear all of a sudden like that? If so, I don't want anything to do with him.

Though I heard he (Jesus) was a pretty good goalie. I'm always seeing signs and stuff that say, "Jesus Saves."

Lame joke, sorry... did anyone ever have a "Jesus Saves, Mario Scores," t-shirt? Me neither but I always wanted one.

Staal brothers definately got arrested on Monday night. Props to TSN, again. Not to encourage this, but its nice to see jordy's got a mean streak. Hopefully it will carry over to the ice a little next season. The mean-ness, I mean...not the drunkeness. Well, on second though....

click it.

Would everybody please stop talking about letting Malkin go?
