To Hell and Back

A Winter in the Sun

Maybe one of the toughest days we all have ever experienced as sports fans.

Looking back on it, it is hard to believe we were that down.
Somehow we all made it.

December 20,2006
At 11:33am Pensblog Chris broke the news
Commentorblog blew up.

Here is what people were saying:

This is very bad news. The Penguins have no attachment to Pittsburgh after June.
The NHL might rally for Pittsburgh, but I really don't believe it's going to absolutely bar an owner from leaving. Maybe it will be harsher than Jimmy Balls wanted, but for the viability of the league they're not going to have a team continue to play at Mellon.
This is a terrible day.

i don't even know where to begin...i actually cried today when I heard the press conference. My biggest fears came true, that I actually thought for once a politician would get something right. I was wrong, I no longer have faith in anyone in the public eye.
Mario was told to find private money for the arena, then he did, and still no new building.
I could go on and on about this, but i know it wouldn't be worth it, i really think OUR pens are gone... what could we do now anyway....

Get a clue people. They are gone. G-O-N-E Gone. Forget it. Say hello to the K.C. Penguins. Nice job. Nice.
If you don't think it'll happen remember this: the Dodgers used to be in Brooklyn, the Giants in at the Polo Grounds and the Colts in Baltimore. All of them in are in other cities because they received sweetheart deals. That's what will happen with the Pens. Mario owes the city nothing. He should dump the team and go play golf for the rest of his life. All he did for that town, on and off the ice and the politicians screwed him. Well it's time he returns the favor.

What a bad time to be alive.
By the time we got to recap it later that night, everyone was drained.
State of Emergency
"There is absolutely no doubt in my mind we will get an arena done," Ravenstahl said.

"We're telling you right now that the Penguins ARE NOT leaving town. If you think they are, that's fine. Everyone has their own opinion on this, but there is no reason in the world for Ravenstahl to come out and boldy say that with, dare I say, the brass of a riverboat gambler."
................................

This is no question a coincidence, but isn't it weird that we have reached the meat of the Arena issues in "Winter in the sun," and there is some important stuff going on in Harrisburg this week concerning the state a slots bill.

"The Legislature's failure to approve the measure authorizing the spending before it recesses could affect a $325 million bond issue for the project and jeopardize the start of construction.
"This has to happen or it could delay the arena construction," Mr. Evanto said. "It's critical to get the funding [authorized] or else construction could get delayed."

Do it.

..............
Around the NHL

We'll start in Pittsburgh though.

..Max Talbot will be playing in the World Series of Poker
We know one Penguin that almost won it.

...Big-time Minicamp going on for the Rookies.
Jonathan Filewich, Ryan Stone and Tyler Kennedy are all getting good looks.
No word yet if LetsGoPens.com has exploded yet due to all three of their favorite players in one spot.

...BGL hurt his shoulder.
But he is OK.

.........The Bruins are cleaning house.
But really, who cares?

.....Bill Clement writes the first preview of the season in late June.
Bill Clement = no clue what is going on

We'd also like to say hello to our newest friend in the blogging world:

The Great Debate:

Did Rick Tocchet touch the deflected puck by Ron Francis in Game 7 against the Islanders in 1993.

Commentorblog regular Chris Y (also known as loserchris) is emphatic that Tocchet touched the Puck.
We say no way.
But it is a worthy debate
Here is the game highlights.
Fast forward to the 4:19 mark.

Picture: Rick Tocchet not deflecting a puck in.

Why ESPN sucks

Look, it is no secret ESPN is a joke.
But for their dumb award show, they sealed the deal.

You have to at least nominate Sidney Crosby.
We hate to even have to do this.
But come on.
Roger Federer?
Tennis is gay.

If Lebron James is the best athlete in sports, we are in trouble.

Tiger Woods is OK.
Petyon Manning is a joke.
Tomlinson is alright.

Either way.
How does an athlete who wins a scoring title, MVP, and isn't even old enough to drink not get considered?
It isn't like hockey is easy.
Just a mind-numbing situation.

Knew it was coming, but it is eerie looking back on that fateful day. It was like waking up for Christmas and finding out that your whole family left you in a rush to get out of the house, leaving you to fend off two burglers. Then finding out that Michael Jackson wants you in his bed. That poor kid...

thank god we don't have to deal with the arena crap anymore....or do we

i heard something about the state Senate having a problem with the budget this year and the $7.5 million is the problem.

I would look for a link but its 5 am and I am 2 hours late for work.

I remember when I first found out IOC didn't get it and said Harrah's got it right? I was stunned to hear Jerome Bettis's lover got the license. That was one of the most depressing days ever until I found out my local pizza hut was closing. Fritowill, I'm not worrying about the arena anymore. The deal is done and the arena is going to get built one way or the another

Korn said...

Where have they all gone? I miss my college days of 5 dollar large pizza wednesdays.

Square pizza = gold

snoopyjode said...

fritowill, here is the story about the arena causing pennsylvania budget approval problems... fast eddie says he'll fight for it.

man, those truly were dark days. i was at work, and my boss (a sabres fan) was laughing about it. i wanted to choke him. i don't know why, but for some reason i never thought they'd actually go. maybe it was faith, but i really think it was denial. i just couldn't handle the thought of them leaving... :(

For the record, nobody is a bigger Ron Francis fan than me, and I wish he had scored both goals. But a good quality replay of the shot from behind Murph clearly shows Tocchet deflecting the puck. Somebody go watch the beginning of Portrait of Courage.

I'm now putting this discussion to bed.

If the Preds wer going to move anywhere it's a shame it won't be to Canada. I have no clue why Leopold wouldn't sell to Balsille.

Chris,

We aren't trying to call you out or anything I hope you don't take it like that.

It is a quality debate. Looking at the MPEG you sent, I could see your point.

I remember hearing this from somewhere else one time. I have tape of the game with Lange and Steigy's call.
I am interested to here there take.

Derek,

I know, I just took it as an excuse to point out how awesome Ronnie was, but at the same time Rick deserves some credit too where it is due. I may still have a VHS copy of the ESPN broadcast at home. I'm gonna check when I get home from work. There's a very good chance I destroyed the tape on principle though.

Spencemo said...

I'm going to guess that the reason the Preds wouldn't sell to Balsille is because he's a douche.

He's obviously a douche spacemo but he's a douche that would pay me as the owner 50 million more that Boots would.

I'm sure you all will be seeing this shortly but Ronnie Francis was named for the Hall, with Messier, Scott Stevens and Al MacInnis. That's a very solid group. ESPN's entry on this is spare, but more will come shortly I'm certain.

Loser Chris said...

Yeah, I was "colby" yesterday too. I'm like freakin' Eddie Murphy up in here!

That's sweet about the HoF. Those are the four I would have picked. Doug Gilmour, Claude Lemieux, and Barrasso need to get in at some point too.

Ron Francis = most underrated player in hockey

a true great

snoopyjode said...

ahhh, so the jig is up, loser chris! from now on, i will ALWAYS suspect you when new (non-linked) people appear... LOL - i must admit, it is hilarious.

the hall of fame's rule of 4 is kind of lame. if there just happen to be seven awesome candidates in one year, just induct them already! that said, i'm SOOOOOO glad ronnie's got picked. he is one of the greatest players and more than deserves it.

Loser Chris said...

It's better than the rule for the NFL HoF where at least four have to go in every year.

thepensblogderek said...

jodie,

I agree, the four players rule is dumb.

But I guess at least it is not like the NFL and they let people like John Stallworth in there

Yancy Thigpen > John Stallworth

Speaking of the Football HoF, I live about 45 minutes from Canton, and have never been to the Hall, but hubby & I drove all the way to Toronto to go to the Hockey HoF...

I guess that means that I truly have my priorities straight!!

thanks for the pickup snoopyjode

Kenny, i lost my faith in government when they didn't award the licence to IOC. Until i have the possibility of watching a game in the new building I still reserve doubt.

Fact: Kenny Melvin created this page.

Fact: Kenny Melvin is talking and writing like PensBlog staff (And yes, I realize the irony in using the 'fact' stanza to get this across.)

Fact: Kenny Melvin has a bit of a man crush on PensBlog staff.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Jonny V said...

pensblogderek, your equation befuddles me. Other than playing balls out in order to catch Kordell's piss-poor throws, Thigpen won nothing. You probably loved Bobby Dollas.

Loser Chris, with your deceptive posts, you are well on your way to becoming ThePensblog's official ninja. You are the master of deception.

snoopyjode said...

okay, so get this:

the company i work for manufactures unfinished furniture. (this IS going somewhere, i swear) there was a big ufa trade show in columbus on this past sunday. our people had to be there to set up last thursday (i didn't get to go because i'm in the IT dept). so we all know the nhl draft was in columbus last weekend, too. of course, the owner of the company took his son to the draft. not a big deal until you consider this:

today was their first day back to work and one guy shows me a picture of the owner's son HOLDING THE STANLEY CUP. this kid wants to be an nhl star when he grows up. he's got private trainers and everything. and he's old enough to know that he if he didn't win it, he shouldn't touch it! my boss (the sabres fan, not the owner) didn't think it was a big deal but i did. maybe that's why the sabres have never won a stanley cup.

...or maybe it just pissed me off because i didn't get to go.

Jonny V said...

Yeah, what a bum...douche

Anonymous said...

I thought the Stanley Cup curse thing only applied once said person was in 'professional hockey'... i.e. juniors, minors, NHL.

Maybe that's why I've never won the Stanley Cup, though.

That, and because I suck at playing hockey, I suppose.

Jonny V said...

Snoopy, that kid is now destined to toil in the minors for the rest of his hockey life. Lord Stanley of Preston does not tolerate insolence.

Kenny Melvin said...

There's a funny story relating to what you guys are talking about with the cup. Gary Dell'Abate or bababooey (executive producer of the HowardStern show) was taking pictures with the stanley cup because it was in the sirius studios. Gary is a huge hockey fan and he should know this is a sin but he lifts the cup above his head. Everyone near him yelled no, no and the player who brought the cup vowed to never return it to the Howard Stern show.

snoopyjode said...

i thought it was simply "if you didn't win it, you don't touch it." but i could be wrong.

see, now that's what i was thinking, jonny v - like he's now doomed.

Anonymous said...

'''Kenny Melvin said...

There's a funny story relating to what you guys are talking about with the cup.'''

Liar. That is not a funny story at all.

Anonymous said...

Didn't someone poop in the Cup once?

I think it happened once. Only once because Gary Roberts the Almighty smited them immediately afterwards.

Anonymous said...

If you go here, it says under Traditions and anecdotes:

In reverence to the Cup, NHL players will not touch the Cup until they hoist it after winning the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

snoopyjode said...

okay, anon, but that's wikipedia. i'm gonna need something a little less prone to roberts jobbing...
