Penguin Equinox

First things first.
Obviously.

We don't analyze the Pens in-depth.
We spend our time in the neutral zone here.
We state the obvious, somehow work Tommy Lee Jones into that obvious statement, and end it.
We're all Pens fans.
We're all jobbers.
We all have our opinions.

But as Owen Hart once elequently put it:

" Enough is enough. "

Rob, your thoughts on that late goal against the Rangers?

"It stinks," Scuderi said. "It bounced right off my stick and into the net."

When asked by the media about his stealthly effectiveness on the blue line and the plethora of goals he has thwarted during even-strength and penalty-killing ice time all season long, Scuderi had this to say:

"," Scuderi said.

Welcome to the world of the jobber defenseman.

The jury may still be out on him now, but when he takes to the ice with Armstrong and Talbot to kill a clutch 5-on-3 in late April...he'll be our best and only friend in the world.

Rob Scuderi is not a nugget.

Penguins defensemen in the 1990-91 Stanley Cup playoffs:

Paul Coffey
Larry Murphy
Ulf Samuelsson
Paul Stanton
Gordie Roberts
Peter Taglianetti
Jim Paek
Grant Jennings

.....................................................................

...Jordan Ravenstahl strengthening his bid for the White House in 2008 by trying to bring the All-Star Game to Wheatley Arena...

...Guy Junker makes his first appearance all year; saying John LeClair should be Pens MVP...

...Around the NHL for some notes... the Stars president complains about the Preds not honoring Mike Modano passing "Broadway" Joe Mullen as the all-time top-scoring American-born player (Modano scored it in Nashville.)

Dallas Stars President Jim Lites spoke in class today:

"I understand it's a competitive situation, but we're also working together to sell the game," Lites told the paper. "They get more money from revenue sharing than any team in the league, they voted against the new schedule because they wanted to have an easier schedule for themselves. They take and take and take and take and never give back, and I'm sick of it."

Dude. Chillll.

..........................................................................

Speaking of not getting along.......

Murray: "Crosby yelled at me."
Therrien: "No, he didn't."
Murray: "Yeah-huh."
Therrien: "Go practice for your Bingo game at the old-folks home. You're a joke."

In case anyone missed it, the mini-saga of Therrien and Sens coach Bryan Murray made some news.
Murray says that he was yelling at Don Koharski about a call that he thought Crosby embellished.
Crosby yelled back at Murray.
Therrien says Murray was yelling at Sid.
Murray also says that Sid needs to watch his foul mouth because he's the face of the NHL.

Sid...thoughts?

F you.

In case you didn't read all of that article. Little story about how T- Bo almost didn't start the Ranger game:

"Working on stopping shots with his neck wasn't part of the plan, but that's what happened when Eaton, using a new stick, got off a shot that managed to sneak under Thibault's mask and catch him in the throat."

"[The shot] didn't follow the same pattern as his usual shot," Thibault said. "It kept going up."

...............................................................

How long until someone in the national media thinks they're original when they do a piece about how the young Penguins won't be able to grow playoff beards?

Dan Potash, beat them to the punch.

...............................................
Lets sneak a peek at our gay Atlantic Division friends

The Devils are a mess..Save the Maple Leafs. Save the World? Leafs win.
Do the Devils even want to win the division?

The Isles lose in OT...

Ted Nolan your thoughts?

"I feel relieved with the way Ricky played after being out that length of time," Islanders coach Ted Nolan said.

Ted Nolan Ryan then went on to throw seven scoreless innings.

And who even cares -- Philly lost.

Not a division game, but equally as important -- the Sens job the Blues. 4-2

Picture: Coach Bryan Murray's life partner is all business after the Senators huge win.

I'm siding with the Stars on the whole Preds thing. Did anyone else see the Nashville feed of the Tootoo hit on Robidas. Their announcers pretty much laughed about it and said Robidas deserved it. They had plenty of time to talk too as they got him on his freaking stretcher! Good thing noone was at the game to see it. Can you say Kansas City Predators?

Crosby drops more F-bombs than he score points. My friends and I have a whole repertoire of lines we've seen him mouth off.

My person favorite is when Cros skated nearly all the way from the bench to maneuver his way into a scrum, get into some no-name's face saying, "Hey, Hey!" Then the moment attention is gained, "Fuck You."

On another topic altogether, the Pens will win this division and when they do, don't be shocked if they get the #1. I know, I know, it seems nuts, but Buffalo is injured like all hell and many times when teams reassemble after injuries they slump. Those three games in April might mean a lot more than anyone could have imagined a few years ago.

Oh yes, one more quick fact.
Then Pens ARE the best team in the league...
January- 2 regulation losses
February- 3 regulation losses
March- 2 regulation losses (so far)

Who the hell complains about hockey players cursing? Seriously what planet do you have to be from to say something like that? It's like telling baseball players to spit less.

Murray's a joke.

Bryan Murray is a dick-hole. Its hockey for f**ksake! Giant men on skates carrying sticks to propel frozen rubber pucks upwards of 100mph; slamming themselves into one another and occasionally puching each other in the face...but Sidney Crosby is the "face" of the league so he isn't allowed to use naughty language. What a jerk!

Anyway, that Potash PhotoShop is super sweet.

Nashville announcers are no different than any other team's announcers in a non-traditional city.

I live in Tampa, and the announcers and media are RIDICULOUS homers. It's because they know they're dealing with a more fickle audience and they have to keep them around.

Anyways, this is starting to remind me of the early-90s Penguins.

So I've decided to recreate the early-90s myself. I've been wearing flannel shirts, listening to Pearl Jam "Ten", and the Geto Boys again.

Hey, it's not as bad as when during the Steelers 05 playoff run I broke out some Foghat records, wore leisure suits, and bought a season of the Love Boat on BETA to recreate the 70s.

I leave you with this:

"Goddamn homie... my mind's playin tricks on me"

(did anyone get that?)

Canada has a bunch of great commercials with Sid that I've seen on YouTube. I just watched one for Gatorade last night that was pretty good. Kind of sucks that we don't get them down here.

I used to feel sorry for Nashville because I know how it feels to have your team's future in jeopardy, but screw them. It's not that impressive to get to 100 points when you're repeatedly beating up the retarded kids on the playground to do it. They're pretty much the biggest assholes in the league besides Claude & Lou out in Jersey. We fought to keep our team here, let them do the same, assuming that they have any fans.

I'm really starting to look forward to the new photoshops every day. You guys are all hilarious. The Mark Eaton/MI one is my favorite today, I think. The bunny ears just seem so random.

loralei said...

As far as the Stars/Nashville thing goes... If I recall correctly the Stars did have a little something special for Mark Recchi when he got his 500th goal. Its about class people. Nashville hockey people have none, which is why as Loser Chris stated, they will be the Kansas City Predators in the near future.

Honestly what would be even better is if Sid said "hey, hey, Fuck you" and then punched him in the face. That would have been great. Gordie Howe would be so proud..

Jon, Adam G and Louie...you guys are killing me with the early 90's references. I'll join the old farts club here because I'm ancient as I approach the ripe old age of 32 this summer. I remember...

1. when McDonalds food came in styrofoam containers and when Happy Meal toys sucked,

2. when people carried walkmans and portable CD players (which weighed approx. 10 pounds back then, too),

3. when it was a shock to see an "explicit lyrics" label on a CD cover,

4. when CD's came in those long cardboard boxes,

5. when cordless phones and ATMs were groundbreaking technology,

6. when Tecmo Bowl, Nintendo Ice Hockey, NHL '93 and NHL '94 ruled the sports gaming world,

7. when the world actually got by without cell phones and the internet,

8. The Fat Boys, 3rd Bass, and Digital Underground (which included the very early pre-gangsta days of one Tupac Shakur...go find the video for Digital Underground's "Same Song" on Youtube, and prepare to laugh your asses off during his appearance halfway through the song),

9. as Jon alluded, when grunge knocked hair metal off its pedastal...as someone whose formative music years coincided with the hair metal era, this was devastating at first,

10. Laserdiscs. Enough said.

11. Teal and flourescent colors were fashionable. Enough said.

This whole string of comments is absolutely amazing. If you really want to view something hysterical, try and procure the video for Michel'le's less than classic track "Nicety", which features some of the most awesomely bad lyrics of all time. A young Dr. Dre provides a rap interlude which ranks through the roof on the unintentional comedy scale, and also features a brief cameo from Easy E wearing angels wings. I highly recommend this for anyone in need of some good humor and nostalgia.

"Some people think I'm nice, some people think I'm nasty. But if you really want to know just ask me... I'll say I'm nicety." I actually think nicety might be the best way to accurately describe Sid, we all know he transcends mere customary terms and language.

By the way, I won something like two hundred straight games of NES Ice Hockey in college when someone brought out an old system my senior year. The fat guys are dominant in the offensive zone and you need a skinny guy to carry the puck around and repeatedly fly past everyone like Dean Youngblood in the championship game.

Spencemo said...

Yes, but for us old farts (who the hell thought I'd be an old fart at 33?!), there's a technology older than the Laserdisc...It was the video disk. If you've never seen one, it was basically a huge plastic sleeve that held a record on a track. You slid it, sleeve and all into the player, the track would catch in the back, you pulled the sleeve back out, and it played the movie. With a needle, like a turntable. You have no idea how shitty these were, and my parents were HOOKED!

[i]Hip Hop Marmalade spic And span,
Met you one summer and it all began
You're the best girl that I ever did see,
The great Larry Bird Jersey 33
When you take a sip you buzz like a hornet
Billy Shakespeare wrote a whole bunch of sonnets
Call me Willy Whistle cause I can't speak baby
Something in your eyes went and drove me crazy
Now I can't forget you and it makes me mad,
Left one day and never came back
Stayed all summer then went back home,
Macauly Culkin wasn't Home Alone
Fell deep in love, but now we ain't speaking

Speaking to the guys that commented on my Pearl Jam/Geto Boys/early-90s post:

I noticed that about 3 or 4 years ago 80s hair metal officially became "classic rock".

So I figure that within a 1 year or 2, grunge will become classic rock too. Then I'll feel really old, and I'm not even out of my 20s yet!

But hey, at least if a wave of grunge nostalgia comes along we can all enjoy wearing flannel and dressing like lumberjacks from the northwest again!!

The other question is, if the Pirates ever make a playoff run again will I just dress like Honus Wagner for a few weeks or so?

You guys realize a lot of this stuff came out AFTER the Pirates' last winning season..... thank God for the Pens.

The british LOVE Brodeur. No clue why. Like, yeah he's a good goalie- but damn.

Whole devils/pens game "He's the best there is. Absolute best. Always top notch"
Penguins then win 3-0
"He's still the best there is. Everyone has rough spots. Tonight the Penguins seemed to just play an incredible game.

Side note: Christina, you still in Italy? I'll be headed there April 24th til..? and have some questions

Tiffany,

I was a freshman at W&J during the 1994-95 school year and all my roommate did that year was play Street Fighter on my Genesis. That was also the year Mortal Kombat first made an appearance on the Genesis...we drove up to the Washington Mall in Washington, PA, split the cost of it, and I don't think he went to class the rest of the semester. I didn't mind MK...I couldn't friggin' stand Street Fighter after that year.

I remember him listening to Skee-Lo and Biggie a lot that year, too. He was from Jersey City, NJ (you walked through a tunnel at the end of his street and on the other side, you were looking across into Manhattan), so he was heavy into the NYC rap scene.

That was also the year Pearl Jam released Vitalogy. The kid at the end of my hallway bought it and played either that or Counting Crows the rest of the year. I cringe anytime I hear "Better Man" by Pearl Jam. I liked PJ until that kid bought that CD (still like them...just hate that CD).

Loved the Oasis reference, too. Another good band from my college days. They put out some terrific stuff ("Don't Look Back in Anger" was one of my favorites). If you like "Supernova", download the live version from "Familiar to Millions".

I grew up and still am a big Guns N' Roses fan, but as I'm still waiting for a new album from Axl, I've found Izzy Stradlin's solo stuff to be very good, particularly his "On Down the Road" album. If you like(d) Oasis, you'll like this album. If you get a chance, pull it off ITunes or something like that (or at least get "Sweet Caress"...best song Izzy's done).

Grunge was cool kinda until those poser assholes Bush came over from England and just started ripping it off just to make money.

After that, we were treated to very many crappy bands: Candlebox, Live, Creed... the list went on and on.

Louis Lipps is my homeboy said...

By the way, since we're on the early-90s, the first person the photo-shops a picture of a current Penguin over Dr. Dre's face on the cover of "The Chronic" should immediately be declared a Pensblog legend!

I'd do it, but I don't have photoshop and a MS Paint version would just suck.

Also, a photoshop involving the baby on the cover of "Nevermind" would be cool too.

I just started talking to my girlfriend about what we've been discussing on here.

Was Andrew Dice Clay early-90s, or more of an 80s guy?

All I remember that as a preteen every kid in my grade LOVED the guy.

Looking back, he wasn't really that funny. But when you're in 5th grade, all it takes is some sex jokes and f-bombs for you to think something's hilarious.

God, can tomorrow's game get here soon enough?!

Justin said...

he was early 90's

Steve said...

Someone already did the cover of Nevermind. With Eaton I think.

Karri said...

Steve...yeah, it was back in February...it was at the top so you can't find it now on Feb's posts. It had Mark Eaton's head complete with helmet. (Maybe the staff could repost it. I have it saved on my computer. :)

this 90 stuff is unreal. We have a 2001 look back in production right now,but the 90's were money in the bank.
Give me a sega any day of the week over anything.

I believe the eaton pic is laying around in our email somewhere. We are trying to figure out what to do with all these photoshops. Because they have to be shared.

Thanks Stoosh!! "ٮ"

Rachel....holy s**t!!! Your picture is incredible!!!!

Matt, haha....thanks for the Rob Scuderi photo.... :)

Louis Lipps is my homeboy said...

Matt is now officially the king of earth!!!

And Scuderi of all people... fucking awesome!

I'm surprised I missed the Nevermind photoshop picture. I gotta see that one.

It was also a good time for comedic duos that liked heavy metal. Bill and Ted, Wayne and Garth (and Stan Mikita's donut shop!), and Beavis and Butthead. All early 90s classics.

How about early-90s sports?

Is Laraque the new Ulf Samuelson? Fleury the new Barasso? Ganochar the new Paul Coffey? And will a Canadian team win the World Series again?

And who could forget watching the Bills get beat every year in the Super Bowl?

And how many of you rented Basic Instinct and just fast forwarded to the "good parts" when your parents weren't around?

rachel said...

Thanks dying alive and Tiff!

Duck Hunt was definitely a good time!

Matt, great Scuderi pic, haha
