Let's Make A Deal?

If you rely on The Pensblog for up-to-the-minute Penguins news, you are high.

Gary Roberts

The Florida Panther forward was told by General Manager Jacques Martin this morning after practice that the club had found a trade it deemed acceptable and all that is required to consummate the transaction is Roberts' waiving of his no-trade clause.

Roberts had made it abundantly clear that he would only waive his no-trade clause for two teams - the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators. And sources suggest the deal the Panthers have worked out with Roberts is with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Pittsburgh has shown the most interest. Sources say the Penguins are prepared to give up a young roster player with potential in exchange for Roberts, who is an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.

Roberts did not accompany the Panthers' on their flight this afternoon to Washington, but is expected to let the Panthers know later today whether he will waive the no-trade clause to go to Pittsburgh.

Young roster player?

....................................

Anyone know what to make of this rumor coming from the Chicago Tribune?

- Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook could go to the Penguins along with a prospect and a pick for Jordan Staal. (Chicago Tribune)

i have heard the young roster player is Noah Welch

Elizabeth said...

um...no way on that last one.

tiffany said...

I hope it's Welch....why WOULD they give up Jordan??? You'd have to be brain dead to make a stupid move like that. Can't see that happening.

Staff said...

what promising young player would we trade for a rent-a-player?

Christensen - no way
Ouellet - Therrien loves him.
Armstrong - Could be the heart of the team.
Talbot - No way

That definitely leaves Noah Welch there, Nate.

Anonymous said...

No, Ray Shero can't be that dumb.

A "young roster player"? Welch? I don't know if I even like that. Roberts born on May 23, 1966, is at the end, or past the end, of his career.

And no way Staal is leaving for Chicago!

tiffany said...

Karri,
That's true....why would we want a 40 year old?? Maybe Welch just needs some time to improve his game.

Bob Pompeani (KDKA TV Pittsburgh) just announced that the deal for Roberts is for Welch as long as Roberts waves his "no trade Clause". He said the Pens have soured on Welch because he's taking too long to develop. Roberts is reporting that he is intrigued with the deal.

Staff said...

Karri, that's money.

TheGuyFromPgh said...

Why not? It could only improve things. I say its a good move to trade Welch.

That blackhawk rumor about a trade for Staal, all I have to say is, HA! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!!

rachel said...

Stan Savran the exact same thing about Roberts on Savran on Sportsbeat.

Staal leaving for the Blackhawks... I like the when Hell freezes over sign below, haha!

SgtD said...

AARRRGH!

As a Hawks fan I cannot stand why whomever starts these rumors has soured on Brent Seabrook. He's just a kid! Defenseman take longer to develop!
Cripes.

Also - as a Pens fan I must say that any rumor involving Stall should be taken with a grain of salt. I can't see him going anywhere...

Shanna said...

No way they deal Staal to anybody. That's the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time.

Now Noah, I wasnt to big on him anyway so I'm ok with dealing him. But for a guy that's almost retired?

Andy said...

Here is some math:

My dad is 60 years old. He gets the senior discount at Eat-N-Park.

Sidney Crosby is 19. He is not old enough to drink.

Gary Roberts, at 41 years young, is closer in age to my soon-to-be-retired dad than he is to his soon-to-be-linemate Crosby.

Why is this trade not mortgaging the future for the present, which Shero said he would not do??? Not to be pessismistic, but this team is only a handful of points away from 9th-place. Gary Roberts does not guarantee them a spot, nor does he guarantee them any type of cup run.

I think Shero needs to step back and be a little more patient.

did the pens bring back craig patrick to work on these deals? WTF????????
perhaps dave littlefield is the pens new florida scout

tiffany said...

Ok...I wouldn't mind having Welch traded either, but I don't know that much about Roberts. I know he's a Left Winger that I think shoots left. So, we'd have another left shooter and not a right shooter. Maybe he could bring a different element to the team....I dunno.

About him joining the Pens at 40...I was a little leary of that, but Recchi's 39. So, who knows??

Justin said...

the chicago paper is also reporting the pens might package crosby and malkin and trade them to the hawks for a bag of magic beans......more on this tomorrow

Justin...hahahahahahahaha

i actually had a dream last night about Staal going to the Blackhawks later in his career... swear to Gahd.

i really don't see what Roberts would bring to the team other than short-term "experience", a la LeClair. I'm not a big Welch fan, but i'd sooner trade Melichar than him.

it's really hard to keep the perspective that this is supposed to be a "promising progress year" and not Year One of the New Dynasty... i don't want to see short-term guys, i want guys who are a year or two away from reaching their potential so they grow with everyone else.

But to be fair, we do have a few too many centers on the team, and short of retraining them as wings (or Coffey-style defensemen?) they may end up being more valuable as trade material for our weak spots, regardless of how much we love them.

Loser Chris said...

I still think it's too early to give up on Welch.

tiffany said...

LOVE your comment Justin. :D

Justin said...

this isnt gonna be a popular point of view, but id rather they dont trade for roberts and instead see if ekman can add any offense when he comes back.......i think he may have done better at the beginning of the season had therien not changed hisline combos more than his socks

id rather see them trade for a veteren defenseman than a 40 year old wing

Anonymous said...

I agree with you Justin...they are lacking in defense...

And bwzimmerman in PHX..."I really don't see what Roberts would bring to the team other than short-term 'experience', a la LeClair."
- I agree.

I hope Pompeani is wrong.

You guys need to keep an open mind about this. Here are some points:

1. Welch is hardly a young prospect, he's 27 and hasn't developed as well as anyone would have liked him to. We have Letang and Goliski (sp?) waiting in the wings, so let's get something while we can for Welch.

2. Roberts is a strong power forward, a winger, a veteran, and a good player with playoff experience. Shero has made it clear with this attempt that we are making a serious run at the cup, so Roberts can only help us at this point.

3. It might have something to do with a three way trade deal involving toronto or ottawa, I had heard that was a possibility.

Loser Chris said...

Roberts is the wrong guy to bring into this locker room. He's a "me guy" not an "us guy". Proof:

- He spent too much time in Toronto when they were an embarrassment to the league recently. I'm sure there are refs that still carry a grudge against him.

- When Ron Francis signed with Carolina, Roberts wouldn't let him have his number 10.

- When Roberts then signed with the Leafs, he bugged Lanny McDonald to let him wear his retired number 7.

Is that the type of guy you want coming into this locker room right now? I sure would prefer him to stay put where he is. I'm sure there are other options out there for moving Welch if Shero is really determined to do so.

Antonette said...

This is a ridiculous Craig Patrick trade. Lets send MAF down to the Q while we're at it.

It sucks that we have such an influx of young talent that we have to throw some of it away. Oi.

Anonymous said...

Speaking of Welch...does anyone know how he is after that hit he took at the WS Pens v. Hershey Bears game last Thursday night? I went to that game. I hate to say it but, he should go. I would rather lose Welch than someone that is playing in Pittsburgh right now and is working well with the chemistry of the team.

Noah Welch was born on 8-26-1982, that makes him 24.

Red Anchor said...

Now people are saying that Toronto is in the mix, offering a 2nd rounder and a 4th rounder plus a prospect for Roberts. Sounds like the deal is toast to me.

Andrew said...

I say we push to get Gunner Stahl. His performance in the Junior Goodwill Games was pretty fantastic. And with Banks always getting hurt, we could really use his toughness.

Plus it would solve our enforcer issue.

marc said...

trade jordan staal? dont make me laugh... why would we trade a kid who is producing every night for a guy who is sucking this year?

just a rumour

tiffany said...

I love The Mighty Ducks reference. Quack, quack, quack....

Andrew said...

Tiffany,

I couldn't sleep last night and ended up watcing The Mighty Ducks AND D2: The Might Ducks.

tiffany said...

Andrew,
It's knuckle-puck time.....

tiffany said...

Hahahaha.....I love those movies. I watched them sooo many times with my friends.

Andrew & Tiffany...

Hahahahahahahaha...

I was baffled at first!

Karri

Andrew said...

I seriously counted last night...

During the Iceland/US game (the 2nd one) there are 12 penalties NOT called against Iceland...not to mention the ones NOT called against the US. Now those were some horrible refs.

tiffany said...

Hahaha....I know. They got away with a lot of dirty stuff. :)

Andrew said...

Just sloppy hockey all around. So many blown interference calls.

tiffany said...

LOL.....now I'm in the mood to watch them. Going through Pens withdrawal is tough. I need a substitute until I can score some of the real stuff tomorrow night. And for now, I guess, that would be the Mighty Ducks.

Did anyone hear the rumor of Bill Guerin of the St. Louis Blues being traded for Ryan Malone?

Karri

rachel said...

Karri, I was just going to post about that!

It also included a first round pick with Malone

This is nonsense!

I can't wait til tomorrow night when all of this is over.

tiffany said...

I'm with YOU Karri.

This is rediculous....

tiffany said...

Ooooops....a bit of a brain fart. I meant "ridiculous."

rachel said...

Tiffany, I think we all knew what you meant, haha

I totally agree that all these rumors are driving me crazy!

If the deal's good I think Roberts will go to Toronto because he originally said he wanted to go there, but with Guerin... I don't know.

I don't mind Welch. I think he needs more time to develop as it seems defensemen take more time than forwards to develop.

Let's just hope in the end Shero makes the right decision for the team!

tiffany said...

Rachel,
I agree with what you said. I do think Welch may need more time to improve as a player, but if they're gonna trade anyone I hope it's him as opposed to Malone or someone else that's producing.

tiffany said...

Staff,
Oh my gosh.....I started cracking up when I saw the picture at the top!! I can't believe it's a real book.

rachel said...

Tiffany, I'd have to agree with that. Malone does make me so mad sometimes, but with the right motivation he produces. With how he's playing recently (not including the HT against the Islanders), I think he would make a better 3rd liner. He's a strong, physical player and seemed to play really well when he was put down to that line. Personally, I wouldn't mind if we didn't trade anyone before the deadline.

The new heading... hahahaha!

Sources tell TSN that Gary Roberts has waived his no trade clause, paving the way for the Florida Panthers and Pittsburgh Penguins to consummate a conditional deal that they agreed to on Monday. Details to follow.

Rachel,
Exactly! I don't really want anyone traded either. I love the team that we have. And like Justin said earlier, why don't we see what Ekman can do when he comes back in March.

Anonymous said...

I hope Roberts goes to Toronto.

Karri

tiffany said...

Where did Lesbian Satan go??? ;)

Did he/she get hit by a winter storm?? It seems that Hell really did freeze over....

rachel said...

Go away Roberts! I don't like the new heading...

I definitely want to see what Ekman to do when he gets back in the line up.

Andy said...

Here's a little skit I wrote, taken loosely from Anchorman .......

ANCHOR: Hello. I'm Gary Roberts. I'm going to help the Penguins win a Stanley Cup?

PRODUCER: Dammit! Who put a question mark on the teleprompter!?

The End.
