17 games in 31 days.
And well just look at those games. Someone might die before March ends.
We are an injury and cold streak away from a 3-12-2 month.

Picture: Sidney Crosby after a loss to Atlanta on March 24th drops the Pens to 10th spot.
We're not assholes.
The Pens schedule in March is the asshole.
It is going to be the longest March ever.
...................................................................

Tons of moves today, and this could only be the start of it. As always, if you don't see it on www.tsn.ca, then don't listen to it.
If you visited letsgopens.com today, you probably thought about killing yourself.
Way too many rumors floating around.
The Pens have been rumored to get everyone.
We do know they have a deal in place for:
...The Hawks, Flyers, and Wings have a three-way with the likes of Jason Williams, Kyle Calder, and Lasse Kukkonen...
Philly is stockpiling right now.
...The Islanders get Richard Zednik from Washington for a 2007 second-round draft pick and a copy of "Big Trouble in Little China" on VHS.
...Vancouver gets Brent Sopel and Bryan Smolinski. Nice moves...
...The Sharks nabbed Craig Rivet from Montreal for Josh Georges. Montreal is garbage...
...We don't know how this slipped under our radar, but we somehow missed the biggest name dealt at the trading deadline:

Future Considerations = Endicott's mother has to bang Scott Neidermayer's pet emu Rico the next time Dallas visits Anaheim.
....................................................
For once all year they actually gave us some decent games to watch.
Boston's season may be over after the Thrashers squeaked past them.
Montreal hangs on with a huge win over Toronto.

Bring it.

Gary Roberts facts coming to a Pensblog near you?
The post before detailed those awful rumors about Staal going to Chicago. Here's the link from the Chicago Tribune. Unless Marty Havlat is part of that deal, it's not even worth talking about...
Moving on...
Here are the trades we know that have happened.
Rumors are flying. Roberts is coming....or is he?

"Someone might die before March ends."
Oh man....this IS gonna be a rough month. With the Pens playing a few teams at least twice (NYR, NJD, OTT, BOS), thankfully they're only playing MTL once.
March is going to suck... back to back games 4 times!
I can't wait until the trade deadline comes!
From the Pittsburgh Sports Insider,
"IF ROBERTS AGREES TO THIS DEAL, HE WILL NOT PLAY ON THE #1 LINE WITH THE PENS.
IF HEALTHY, RAY SHERO BELIEVES HE CAN CONTRIBUTE TO A SECOND LINE."
http://www.pittsburghsportsinsider.com/?p=439
Pens will finish March at either 10-3-4 or 10-4-3. I haven't been this confident in a prediction since I predicted that Mario Lemieux would score the game tying goal in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals in 2001.
If Roberts plays second line, Ouellet would be taken off.
Blake, I'm liking your prediction!
ouellet taken off.......or traded.....
nick godfrey is the man
roberts can suck my left nut. i dont like the deal one bit. we better make another move or two or this is gonna be one bad trade deadline
Hmmm....I don't know if I wanna think about who Roberts would replace until it's for sure that he IS coming to Pittsburgh.....
I dunno. It's all speculation at this point until we find out what the HECK is going on tomorrow!!
I don't think I'm gonna be able to sleep very well again tonight..... :(
No question another deal is coming
Shero had better be on the phone with the Blues right now. Get me Guerin or Brewer!
Make sure you put me on the growing list of people hoping we don't get Roberts.
GET ME MARTY STRAKA!
or Gunner Stahl.
chris,
No way we are getting Brewer, he just signed a multi-year deal with the team.
I am on the fence about this Roberts thing.
Got to admit though, the trade deadline puts a hop in my step
Gunner Stahl is money in the bank
Julie " The cat" Gafney would be a solid backup
Plus, "The Cat" is f'n hot. That can't hurt at all.
Maybe we should get Portman for our enforcer? I'm cool with a sleevless jersey if you are...
Didn't see anything about the Brewer signing. That sucks. Espeically since Sopel is off the market too.
Andrew I was going to say she was hot, but I wasn't sure.
Banks and Conway banged her..no question.
Banks and Conway got the Eiffel Tower in on Connie Moreau...not sure about the Cat. I think she was more into the Iceland team...
Bombay was everywhere. He nailed everyone in d2
Bombay did nail everyone...including "The Dentist"
i don't like this trade with Roberts one bit. if we needed an old guy we had Leclair, and we all remember how that worked out. Welch could have been better dealt for someone else. Like Laraque/Boyton.
also, i look for Laraque's price to fall rapidly tomorrow as the deadline nears. i hope i'm right and we get him. Boyton would be a great addition too i think... right shot, big, physical, and defensive.
-andrew13
and i hate the idea of malone and a 1st rounder for Guerin. the guy is a 36 yr old rental player. no way are we resigning him next year. if they wanted old guys who woln't come back and have experiance, talk to the Yotes about tossing in Roneik with the trade.
also, i wouldn't have minded seeing the pens pick up Bertuzzi from FLA. don't think that was ever even talked about though.
In no way is Roberts like Leclair. Roberts is actually in shape and can grind and score...
the guy's 41 and woln't be here past june it looks like. waste of a prospect if you ask me.
-andrew13
Actually, the word is that he wouldn't consider coming here unless he would sign an extension...so...
Hell, I'd be happy to have Roberts on the team for another year.
I'd like to see the Pens get Luis Mendoza since he has mad speed....plus he's really cute. :) I wouldn't mind having Gunner Stahl either. At least he's a class act.
"You lost it for yourself. Let's go shake their hands."
As for "The Bash Brothers," I think we already have them--Petrovicky and Ruutu.
We already had Luis Mendoza...his name got changed to Konstantin Koltsov, though.
Gunner is a class act. Which is why he fits this orginazation perfectly...
Haha....oh yeah....I forgot about the legal name change. I'll blame it on lack of sleep. ;)
And I completely agree with you about Gunner fitting perfectly. Now how do we slip his name into Ray Shero's office before the deadline?? Hmmm.....
I want Straka back :(
But he just signed another year contract with the Rangers. Ugh.
you know trading a prospect ins't that bad of a idea if you look at it this way. (this is a stretch)
At some point we are going to have to resign Crosby, Malkin, Staal, MAF..... you get my point. Trading our top pick in 07 or even 08 isn't that bad of an idea if you look at it like that.
Just another point of view.
PG reports the Roberts deal is done. Anyone else think its a bad move trading Welch?
dealing welch is a smart move for us, he cant even crack out top 7 d men right now. let alone when letang gets here. welch's ship has sailed
"No Trade Claus" should be the next Tim Allen movie.
If Roberts comes to Pittsburgh, it will be to play on the 2nd line, finally giving Therrien the ability to move Staal or Malkin to the top line with Crosby for good, as we all know he would love to do.
We would probably see Malone drop to the 3rd line where he has played very well. Moving Malone to the 3rd line would probably give the pens the most from him, as he really steps it up when away from other goal scorers. And as much as the pens 3rd line plays, he'll still see good ice time.
Having either Staal or Malkin on the top line with Sid and Recchi would jumpstart their even strength production, and a line of Roberts-Staal-Oullet, or Roberts-Malkin-Oullet would still have some great offensive punch. And I absolutely LOVE the idea of a 3rd line of Talbot-Malone-Christensen, as there might not be a more talented 3rd line in the NHL.
So looking at this scenario, I'm gonna have to give the thumbs up the Roberts deal.
The Rangers are allegedly shopping Jagr around. That could make things interesting if they actually moved him.
According to TSN the Roberts deal is officially done. Roberts for Welch. I'm not sold on this one, but I'm more than willing to give Shero the benefit of the doubt.
Yep the trade was just announced welch for roberts straight up
I would trade a 2 minute minor for Noah Welch. Something for nothing is always good.
So the big question now is... who is bumped out of the lineup now? And what happens when Ekman gets healthy?
andrew, i know you are kidding, but straka is hurt so...
its going to be interesting on what the line up will be. roberts will not be dressing tonight.
also, thorburn was recalled yesterday too and ekman might be coming back in late march.

Holy crap... BGL is in the house! We got him for a spare part and an 8th round pick. This is awesome. I didn't think the Pens needed an enforcer, but BGL can actually play. Now if Shero can just bring home a top 4 D-man we're set!
NOOOOO!!!!!
we get laraque.
but we loose carcillo, my favorite babypen. that guy was great to watch. why couldn't it have been ryan stone?
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/trade_deadline/news_story/?ID=197887&hubname=nhl-trade_deadline
oh well. i need to start saving for my BGL jersey.
-andrew13 (last post too... i was so pissed about loosing carcillo i foregot to sign it.)
UGH stop w/ the old people.. Why are we getting more old people? Who did we get rid of this year? And old person and a fighter. And now who have we picked up? An old person and a fighter. Seriously. I think I automatically hate Gary Roberts. Unless he removes his face to reveal that he is really Ron Francis in disguise there is really nothing about that trade that i like.
they traded for 2 forwards, so i think they have at least one more deal up their sleeves
Roberts made some sense, but Laraque? I really like Carcillo - the dude is young, tough and skilled and he's borderline insane. He just turned 22 and already has 20 goals in Wilkes Barre and is well on his way to 300 penalty minutes again. Laraque is 30, very mediocre and not much more than a tough guy. He seems to screw up our fourth line actually. How do the lines look as we speak now, here's a possibility I'd guess?
Recchi - Crosby - Malone
Roberts - Staal - Malkin
Christensen - Talbot - Armstrong
Laraque - Moore - Ruutu
This leaves out Ouellet, Petro and Thorburn, who don't necessarily fit in anywhere. I just don't see how this helps us, plus we lose two pretty legit prospects.
gavin, i see army or thorburn being sent down for the rest of the year. also, they need to melicar on waivers tomorrow.
carcillo i liked a lot. but he is to small for the nhl at 5'11" 190lbs to do what he does. he'd shoot off his mouth or challenge a Godaard, Orr, Brash, or Boogey and end up in a coma. he'd be more suited for a ruutu/petro role, which is currently filled. but i did love watching him in wbs last year and the games i made it out to this year.
There has to be one more deal coming. Boynton maybe?
Moore to Minny for a 3rd
Dom Moore just got sent to the Wild for a 3rd rounder. Would rather have him than Roberts but something had to give after adding 2 more forwards.
Assuming BGL plays tonight, what are the odds he throws down with Cam Jansen? I mean, he has to right?
I'd just like to express my appreciation for the extremely snarky manner in which the TSN crew is covering the trades.
"I think everyone's done in Atlanta. Have a nice summer."
i don't think he'll get here tonight. if he does though, i doubt Cam would go with him. Cam is undersized as it is. he's not retarded enough to go with BGL.
-andrew13
yea, i feel a trade or someone leaving on defense is going to happen by 3pm.
looking at the mock line-up gavin suggested, i wouldnt mind seeing ouellet sit or go down to the baby pens. i think they should keep petro and thorburn around the penguin camp come playoffs. those two guys are great players on the 3rd/4th lines.
-Jay
think about this one:
Colton Orr vs Laraque on thursday.
that is going to be a main event. can't wait for that.
i emailed Georges to congradulatehim on coming here
-andrew13
I cant believe we got BGL and before everyone knocks Roberts, Recchi is old too.. it doesn't mean he can't play. He brings knowledge and experience to the table and thats invaluable to a young club in the playoffs.
In commemoration of the Big Trouble in Little China feature in the post (one of my absolute all time favorite movies) I'd just like you all to picture this scenario: BGL is coming here in a big rig, it's a dark and stormy night as he's driving on 79, he gets on the CB and says:
"Just remember what ol' Georges Laraque does when the earth quakes, the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Georges Laraque just looks that big old storm right in the eye and says, "Give me your best shot. I can take it."
Hi guys!
I've been lurking here for a few weeks and love the staff and commenters.
My question is - did we not just trade our best face-off guy away? I realize we have too many bodies now, but I liked Moore and we don't really have anyone with that skill. That' why we aquired him in the first place.
This day is driving me crazy.
Ellen
prior to today:
malone - crosby - recchi
staal - malkin - ouellet
christensen - armstrong - moore
ruutu - talbot - petrovicky
now (probably):
malkin - crosby - recchi
roberts - staal - puellet
christensen - talbot - armstrong/malone
laraque - ruutu - petrovicky
so there still needs to be something else, otherwise we're still forced to scratch a guy we don't want to every night (and that's before ekman returns)
DEFENSE ... DEFENSE ... DEFENSE ... DEFENSE??? Anyone???
dom is actually our second best faceoff guy right behind crusher, fyi
at first i thought getting rid of moore for a 3rd rounder was a really awful idea.
but if you think about it:
we traded our 3rd round for laraque, so basically moore was traded so we could get laraque and keep our 3rd round pick (make sense?). still im not sure laraque will contribute more than moore did.
theres only 14 minutes left, i cant understand why we havent traded for a better defenseman.
Yeah, we really need to get a D-man.
In Shero We Trust!
Faceoff percentages:
Dom 51.6%
Sid 49.3%
Malkin 45%
Talbot 44%
Christensen seems pretty good @ 53.4%, but I guess he doesn't take enough to get into the NHL sorting in the link below. And get this, Petrovicky has a 50% faceoff percentage. What, he's taken two faceoffs??
link - http://www.nhl.com/nhlstats/app?fetchKey=20072PITSASAll&page=Stats&service=page&sort=faceOffWinPctg&viewName=summary
Ellen
I wanted a d-man!!
I really liked Moore, too. He was good on faceoffs and had good chemistry with Ruutu and Petro. He was also a really nice guy.
the pens already have a picture of The Rock up on their page wearing a penguisn jersey. he isnt already here and playing tonight is he?
Roberts, too. Can you say Photoshop, I knew you could:)
that certainly crossed my mind ellen
I'm most impressed with their +/- on basically mediocre teams:
Roberts +5 and especially Laraque +7.
4th round draft pick choice to flordia for joel kwiatkowski and a seventh-rounder to san jose for minor-league goalie nolan schaefer.
-Jay
2 more deals...
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07058/765373-61.stm
They were planning to send a fourth-round draft choice to Florida for defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski and a seventh-rounder to San Jose for minor-league goalie Nolan Schaefer.
Kwiatkowski, who is 29 and 6-foot, 202 pounds, has five goals and five assists in 41 games with the Panthers, and is expected to join the Penguins after the deal is finalized.
Schaefer, a 27-year-old who is 6 foot 2, 195 pounds, was 5-1 in seven appearances with the Sharks last season, but has not played in the NHL in 2006-07. He is expected to join the Penguins' farm team in Wilkes-Barre.
Jay, you beat me to the 2 minor trades!
haha sorry rachel. im just refreshing all my pages every 10secs.
its trade day, that is a like a given to do that.
-Jay
It's okay. I have like 6 pages I keep refreshing, haha
I like both of those trades. Any help on D is a big plus and Schaefer could potentially step in for T-Bo next season. He was pretty sharp during his time with the Sharks last year. Could he turn out to be another Moose?
IT'S NHL's VERSION OF MARCH MADNESS!!!!! I just hope the boys can keep it together.
