A Flyers Fan Invades the Pensblog

After this post and the residual comments,
we consider the 1/24 meeting with the Flyers closed.

We will address some comment-jobbing in our next post.

There's no use going to this person's site and blasting their comments.
But your keyboard is your world.

Anyone you'd want to piss off will be lurking around here for another day or so anyway,
so just direct your angst in C-Blog.

We lost this bet.
We have to swallow this post and move on.

*As part of the stipulations surrounding this bet, the loser's site was granted minimal editorial privileges, for obvious reasons.

We've added pictures and video at his discretion, but the rest of it wasn't touched.

[ The700Level ]

So the Pensblog and The 700 Level made a little mayor's wager on the outcome of the Flyers-Pens game last night, wherein the winning city's representative gets to post whatever suits their fancy on the other's site. Naturally, Philly won, and we are here to enjoy our spoils.

While trying to decide how to shape this post, several ideas came to mind. I could do a game thread, complete with hard returns after single sentences, cartoon characters doing adult things, and PhotoShops of Michel Therrian wearing a Borat singlet. Or perhaps I could be inflammatory, titling the post, "Another Chapter in the Annals of Pittsburgh's Inferiority Complex," and discussing the big brother city/little brother city relationship that defines our political and sporting rivalries (ie, you think there's a big rivalry; we don't pay attention to you). However, although they'd be fun and surely provide some oxygen for the comment flame, neither of those things would accurately convey how I feel about the Penguins. To be honest, I've always kind of liked PA's other hockey franchise.

I'd be lying if I said this weren't my favorite collectible.

How could anyone, at any time, find fault with Mario Lemieux? I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a black Jagr away jersey, with "Pittsburgh" diagonally down the front and an "A" on the chest (they need to go back to that design, by the way). When I was a wee hockey fan, I collected jerseys as soon as I could afford them, and this was my second favorite (Roy white Canadiens was first). I didn't love the Pens or anything, but it was hard not to be amazed by the play of a young Euro star like Jaromir Jagr. Years later, I wouldn't be caught dead in anything but Phila gear, but times were different when I was 11 years old and skating on a hose-frozen backyard snowfall.

When I heard the Penguins might lose their franchise, I thought it would be a devastating crime against hockey, and definitely the city of Pittsburgh. I nervously tracked the news, which was increasingly ominous for a while. And as much as it may surprise you, when I watched as Super Mario & Co. rebuilt that franchise with unprecedented good draft positions and perfect selections, I was happy. I can't lie; there are quite a few teams for which I have bus-accident hatred… The Penguins just aren't one of them. Not being from New York, New Jersey, or DC helps. We think of you kinda like we think of Baltimore, which is to say, we don't think about you very much at all.

But I am glad to see this rivalry heat up. Since both franchises entered the league in 1967, the Flyers have owned the Pens, winning 50 more games over that time frame. This year, Philly has won the first 4 games. How could I not welcome some new venom, and hopefully, bragging rights? Perhaps with time, rather than Lemieux's iconicism, the Darius Kasparitises of the world will become my new old Pens memories (both his being an absolute scumbag, and also the fact that he's in the frame when Keith Primeau hits "The Shot.")

I can feel my dislike for the boys in Black and Vegas Gold growing daily though, and it does so not because of the Georges Laraque's of the world… my vitriol is aimed almost entirely at Sidney Crosby.

Crosby is undoubtedly a player of amazing talent and scary potential. He will be a thorn in the side of the Flyers and their fans for the next 10 years (at least). However, the same can be said for Evgeni Malkin, and to a lesser extent, Jordan Staal and perhaps Colby Armstrong. I'd love to see any of those latter guys skate in Orange and Black (as well as Laraque). Who wouldn't? I love to watch them play right now, even against my Flyers. But I don't want Crosby. He'd have no place in Philly with his dives, complaints, and expectations of kid-glove treatments. I understand it's crazy not to want an MVP-caliber player on your team, and Paul Holmgren likely wouldn't appreciate me saying so, but I hope to Kate Smith I never see Sid Crosby on the Flyers. He embodies the only kind of player I truly dislike. I like the agitators, the Euro burners, the fourth-line plodding Canadians, the brawlers who have so little talent they might as well where a cape and wrestling tights, even when they're on the other team; but I can't stand an immensely talented player who constantly takes dives, talks trash, but won't fight.

I'll take Mike Richards as my team's captain over Sid Crosby any day of the week. It takes more than scoring. It takes a man to be a leader on the ice, and so far, I don't see Crosby as that kind of guy. Go ahead and throw his stats at me. I know 'em. I don't care. I just don't like him.

That said, when I was having a beer in a hotel bar earlier this week and saw Crosby go down in a heap, with the words "high ankle sprain" at the bottom of the replay, I was pretty disappointed. I knew this great game was right around the corner, and the rivalry is more fun when Sid's on the ice, particularly in Philly. I also freely admit that Sid is great for hockey, a struggling sport that I love. His shootout goal in the Winter Classic helped get hockey some of the attention it deserves, and his absence at the All-Star festivities is unfortunate for the game.

Thanks to the Pensblog for the opportunity to guest post. I wish you success in your endeavor, and hope that someday you will have literate commenters with opposable thumbs.

This guy's a joke and i'm just saying that because he roots for the Flyers.

Exhibit A: I'll take Mike Richards as my team's captain over Sid Crosby any day of the week.

Anyone who would say this, has an extreme and blinding hate toward Crosby and/or the Pens or this person is just delusional

Exhibit B: I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a black Jagr away jersey, with "Pittsburgh" diagonally down the front and an "A" on the chest.

Wearing the jersey of the rival's best player? Weak. Yeah I don't think you would have found me sporting an Eric Lindros flyers jersey back in 97.

I think Holmgren would agree with you, just like Clarke probably would too. How many Stanley Cups did the Flyers win under him? Oh yeah....

We'll keep Sid just fine, and in 5 years when we have 2 cups and the Flyers still have 0, well, you can continue to praise the leader that Mike Richards is. Good luck with that.

My one knock on Crosby from the start has been his referee-whining, and occasional dive.

This season, he has curtailed that (it was inevitable and obvious it would happen sooner than later).

Evidence is the last game against the Thrashers; Start of the second period, he was speared off the faceoff. He looked at the ref, no call, then seconds later was cross-checked from behind into the boards by Bobby Holik. He stood up, and finished his shift.

Don't forget Andrew Ference either.

there's something nice about a hockey player that is above hockey, and above the grime and shit that all of your example 'ideal' characters are in some way tainted with. you can still play hockey without fighting, even if the walls are coming down around you with awful officiating and teams that gut the eastern conference with goons like that somehow became an excuse for a strategy.

So what if he complains, tries to get the best deal he can get out of an often slanted league. Crosby isn't trying to be a well-liked guy. He's trying to be a hockey legend. Who gives a fuck if he doesn't kick up little tussles with league grunts. who cares if he sounds like a robot in interviews? He doesn't, I don't.

also, philadelphia is a joke. learn how to get the city to not choke itself to death before you try to take the atlantic.

I love how Sid will have this shitty reputation for life because he(sure as shit)was a whiny 18 yr old. you were the same way when you were 18. he's a grown-ass man now and has quit the whining act. and drawing penalties does not equal diving. when you're two steps better than the majority of the league, you're going to draw penalties.

This post was kind of lame, and somehow, i respect that. i definitely expected the 700 Club to come in the Pensblog and talk shit all over the place. i dont know how i would have the restraint to be that kind to the Flyers, if i were in the same position. so i give Author props for that.

Mike Georger said...

its not even keeled to suggest sid isnt a leader when he is the most respected player in the league (he wins awards voted on by the players not just the media). its fucking absurd to suggest the youngest captain in the leagues history isnt a leader.

Umm rivalry. That reqiures both sides disliking each other right? I mean lately I don't like the Pens much but there hasn't been a legitimate two-sided pens-Flyers rivalry ever. The Islanders, Rangers, Devils and Caps are all closer to Philadelphia. Boston is about the same distance. The cities are culturally, economically and geographically different. There's no natural rivalry. "Inferiority complex" was the best part about that post because it's just so true. Why don't you get a rival that's like you. Maybe the Blue Jackets?

paekhead said...

thanks dude, but you dont really have to worry about having sid since you never will. you can enjoy his next 15 years worth of jaw-dropping, high-paced, talent-crazy, warp-speed, goal-scoring antics from 287 miles down the turnpike. jagoff.

wilsmith said...

This guy so poorly represents the Flyers fanbase. And by that, I mean he wasn't being a complete dick. He could have said anything he wanted but just left a couple opinions. Now, about those....

Saying that Philly people don't care about Pittsburgh sports? No way, chief. I went to PSU, I was a vast minority compared to the number of Philly kids. Walking down the street with anything Pens on it and I was immediately heckled. Philly kids walk down the street chanting "Pittsburgh sucks" any night of the week, unprovoked. I know that's not representative of the entire fanbase, but it's certainly not an anomaly.

And as for diving and whining, it's the same as every other player in the league, it's just magnified and over analyzed because of who he is. I'm not saying he doesn't do it, but it's not as often as people make it out to be, a lot of the time it's something blatant going on.

Now questioning his leadership? C'mon.
You don't know what he's like around the players. You have no clue what kind of leadership skills he has. Players have stated that he's their leader and he does a good job.

It takes more than scoring? It takes more than fighting.

Any time the Crosby/Richards argument comes up, people just say "wah wah well richards fights he'd be a better captain." As far as I see it, Crosby's a more skilled, higher scoring, equally if not superior leader. An attitude like yours is why nothing in that city will ever be anything more than average.

So I check this blog out a lot because it's hillarious but you have to notice that when these "goon fans" and Philly idiots come in the hockey talk gets a lot more intelligent. I mean it's gone from ConchBlock to conversation about rivalry, team history and whether Crosby's a worthy leader. It's almost like maybe the Philly fans are a little classier? Maybe?

paekhead said...

inferiority complex: a sense of personal inferiority arising from conflict between the desire to be noticed and the fear of being humiliated

so you'd be referring to pittsburgh's 5 super bowl rings, or 2 stanley cups? sorry i got confused seeing as how philadelphia's own sports complex supercedes that of any city on the planet. good luck during your next choke session. congrats on your first 4 games, but give me a break on the theory nonsense. ive lived in philly now for 3 years( born unity township) and philly fans are, as a collective group, the most unintelligent, hate-filled, jealous, disturbed pack of humans youll ever come across. also, pittsburgh is by far the nicer city in terms of just about everything.

I gotta say I expected worse from this post, which I guess is typical when it comes to all things Philly. But overall, I gotta say it wasn't bad. It's not often that you hear a Flyers fan openly admitting to some love (although very minimal) for the Penguins.

Not a bad post, I guess.

NOBODY with a half a brain really thinks Pittsburgh is nicer. C'mon there's nothing here. South Side is cool, but it's no South Street. Manayunk OWNS squirrel hill and shadyside. Dahntown closes at 5 and blows on the weekend (I'm looking out of my apartment right now on 5:15 on a Friday night at downtown and theres nobody there. 4 lanes going outbound on the Liberty Bridge and 1 coming in.) Our symphony, our art museums and our climate (The freaking rivers FREEZE. Are you serious?) all are clearly superior. The burgh's nice and all. I like it and if you grew up here it's probably a great place to call home but it's no Philadelphia. We're talking steel mills versus the Declaration of Independence in terms of importance here.

I'm going to take the stance of diplomacy, and say that the Flyers have had our number this year. They have it almost as bad as we had theirs last year... BFD lets just say that the next four games are going to be as heated as any NHL rivalry there is or has been in a long time. And rivalry has never really been about proximity -- Eagles fans in Philly hate the Cowboys and I'm sure after 15 years of being dominated in the NL East that you've worked up a classic hatred for a certain team from Atlanta.

As far as a Pens-Flyers rivalry, I'm not sure why anyone wouldn't welcome it... We play 8 times every year, and I can't remember the last time the Pens played against Columbus. Lets also remember that these are regular season matchups, so if the stars align and the Pens and Flyers meet up for a round in the playoffs, then the real rivalry talk can start.

As for the Sid bashing, whatever, I don't care -- just remember that Jagr was also our captain once, and he was a cancer in the locker room, but clearly the team leader on the ice... Cros is great for the locker room, a true team player who does have to suffer an inflated amount of abuse and cheap shots each game... you'd complain a little too. Saying you'd rather have Richards over Crosby is like going back in time a decade and saying you'd rather have Rod Brind'Amour than Jagr... really? seriously?

As much as I dislike Philly and most of it's people, this post was classy...with 2 moronic points. Sid is a stand up guy, who will fight if need be (thank you Andrew Ference). However, when you are the best in the world at your job, and your job relies on two working hands, I don't think dropping the gloves for every jobber in the NHL that has penis envy is the answer. Doing a little puck dance around said jobber and scoring another highlight goal is a much better action.

As far as leadership, he is light years ahead of where he should be. At 20 years old, leading a professional team is a lot to ask. The hardest part of making Sid the captain wasn't getting teammates to believe in his leadership abilites, it was getting Sid to believe in them. At 20, most peoples biggest responsibility is hiding their 40's and midget porn. Sid is doing a great job, and will for many years to come.

You may not call it a rivalry, but it is. The players say it is, and so to the fans. Sure you'll have the "Follow the leader Philly fan" that will say they don't care about Pittsburgh. But you know you do. That's why you are at the Pensblog reading this right now.

At least our "future" wanted to play in Pittsburgh unlike "Fetal Position" Lindros not wanting to play in Quebec. If we were such a horrible franchise Sid would have wanted to be someone else.

I thought this cumrag from Philly was supposed to write about the game last night. Who the hell cares if he owns a Lemieux hockey card. Big deal. I would NEVER and I mean NEVER be caught in anything Flyers. I'd rather have a convicted Terrorist live in my house then cheer for the Flyers.

Ugh.. Those that complain about Crosby need to take Bobby Clark's cock out of the mouths and get a life.

snickerdoodles said...

The only reason Sid will have the reputation for whining the rest of his life is because the haters will forever bring it up. No matter what Sid accomplishes, Sid Haters will drink that big ol glass of hateraid and whine "But Sidney whines....he may have won (insert any award)..but he whines! He may have scored 100 goals, but he whiiiiiiiines!" Nevermind all of their whiny sob whining about Sid whining. It's totally okay if they whine. I can't even begin to imagine the whinefest that will occur when the Pens win the Cup.
"The Pens shouldn't have won!!!Sidney dove/whined/ate Cheerios for breakfast! They deserved to lose! Waaaaaah!"

Eric K said...

i hate the "Sid is a diver, no one on my team dives" argument. No one on your team gets knocked down 5 times a game because coaches dont plan their defensive schemes to focus on one player because you dont have Sidney Crosby.
And Sid has dropped the gloves with Ference this season, so that argument is shit.
You never see Sid backing down when someone gets in his face. He gives the face washes/ shoves right back to them.
As I was reading, I was just thinking about how unbeleivably hard it was for me to beleive that more than 10 people actually read that blog and enjoy it. It's dry, and it's basically just the guy's OWN opinions. No links, just alot of blahhh. I grew up 1/2hr north east of Philly in a lame Jersey suburb. my family is from western PA and are Pgh sports fans. I had the Flyers forced upon me until I moved to Pgh.
As I move my opposable thumbs across the keyboard, I am reminded of the blackout-drunk Philly fans who would rant and rave about their teams when they were successful, and dismiss them entirely when they were having a down season. I won't go into battery thrownig, neck-injury cheering and the court house in the old vet. (the standing o for Lemiuex's swan song was classy.)
For almost ten years I played street hockey nearly every weekend. One time, I invited a group of Flyer's fans from across the river to our weekly game. They lost, and after the game they ran over our goal. Classy.
That's my overwhelming memory of Flyer fans, that and the ridiculous Lindros is better than Jagr debates in the late 90's.
The Anti-Crosby sentiment is hilarious. to be fair, I'd boo him if he was a Flyer, but Sid is the games best player. The same player who had his teeth smashed out by derain hatcher before winning the game for the Pens.
How would you, hypothetical Flyers fan, respond if a Flyer had been smashed in the face by a slow, over the hill D-man then wiped the blood from his face, picked up his teeth and scored the game winner. you might say, "Let's see Crosby do something like that". Is that a stretch?

You don't seem like as much of a dick as I suspected, at least you watch hockey which is a redeeming quality in a person. I have some good friends who fall into the 5% of tolerable Philly fans. I assume you are in this 5% as well.

How intense would a playoff meeting be? I'd love to see that.

During the telecast of last night's game, I noticed that if Sidney had been paying attention to where his skates were headed, he wouldn't have slammed into the boards in the manner he did. He wasn't moving particularly fast, say... as fast as a small forward wearing the number 27, checked from behind in close proximity to the boards.

Upon further review of the replay, it appears that he had plent of time to brace for impact or change which body part would hit the boards. Turns out his eyesight was pointed in the ref's direction, not his final destination... looking for a call.

An unecessary injury that epitomizes his young career so far.

As far as the rivalry, it's not there yet, but if the teams keep playing like they are now it's coming. Philly sucked last year, Pittsburgh sucked the year before...why would there be a rivalry right now? The Flyers have more natural rivals in NY and NJ...PA is a big state, after all. If they meet in the playoffs though, which is looking like it's going to happen at this point...wow, it's gonna be fun. Especially if the Pens turn it around and take the next four to even the series up (wishful thinking? maybe. but still)

It gets a little old living here and constantly hearing people say philthadelphia and all of those other inane references if I wear a phillies cap or my eagles jersey on gameday.

The only fault I have about it is this: I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a black Jagr away jersey, with "Pittsburgh" diagonally down the front and an "A" on the chest.

Good Post, better than expected.

BUT, Sid's undeniably the best player in the league, and will be for years. No sense in arguing that point.

I grew up in Western PA, lived near Philly for three years, and now live in central PA. This Philly guy's post is an exception, not the rule. Spend some time in Philly and you'll see. If the Pens would have lost 7-0 last night but there were no fights or cheap shots by Flyers(see Hatcher), the typical Flyers fan would be calling WIP today whining about how the Flyers didn't show the Pens how to play real hockey, blah blah blah.

I wore a Pens jersey to a game in Philly 7 years ago, and from the time I got out of my car all the way into the FU center I was harassed by a 9 to 10 year old boy screaming at the top of his lungs repeatedly-"Penguins Suck, Penguins Suck!" His parents were proud of him. You do NOT see that at the igloo. Sure, there is the normal share of loud mouth drunks saying crap, but not kids. It is bred into them out there. This 700 club post did not come from the normal mouth breathing Flyers fan.

Any person that says they would never want to see Crosby on their favorite team is a liar. And a terrible one. It's a total lie. It's nice to say that you'd take Richards over Crosby any day, but it's just not true. Richards is a fantastic player, but why would you want a player who's not as good? You wouldn't. It's good to stay loyal to your team, but that sentence made the rest of your post a complete joke.

Killadelphia said...

Dear Penguins Fans,

For every argument you make about the class of Philly fans, look over your own posts.

Crosby has a reputation of whining and talking trash around the league. Generally he backs it up with his play, who I might add he is incredibly skilled, he still has that reputation. He likes to run his mouth and you'll rarely see him get into a fight. He has had what, 1 career fight? Right?

For every hater, there's a homer.

For those bad-mouthing Richards, what is not to like about him? Sure his overall numbers are not as high, but he does absolutely everything and he is one of the better two-way forwards in the game. Both players will be apart of this one-sided rivalry for years to come.

Also, I love how the Pens said they had 2 cups, but they forgot the Flyers did as well.

You know, I was anticipating this post because I really thought the Pens were going to get torn up. Photoshops, gay references, pictures of Jones high fiving his teammates. (That really hurt to see.) I fully expected the full on double barreled shotgun blast the the face. You know...what the PensBlog would have done had the Pens won this game. :)

But they didn't and I am rather dissapointed. Hell, there were just as many compliments as there were rips. And the rips were hardly anything Earth shattering.

I don't know what to say, Philly. I'm *stunned*. There were quite a few her trying to fight your post, but there just wasn't that much there to fight. You have to know that PensBlog Charlie would have been all over your page had we won. So is this taking the high road? Does Philly even have a high road?

I dunno but if this bet is made again and we win, you are going to regret being nice. A Flyers fan being nice... What is the world coming to?!

Classy post. I was looking forward to hearing a lot more shit from from that post. I know it has been said many times already, but Ricahrds over Crosby? C'mon. You know you don't mean that. That gives you 0 credibilty. I'd take Luongo over Fluery any day. I'd take Vinny over Colby any day. Hell I'd still take Jagr over Malone, any day. As a fan I want to WIN!! Period. Saying you would take Richards over Crosby says you do not value winning. We see players come and go from our teams all the time. We get connected to them. But when they are traded or leave in FA they become the enemy on game day. I remember watching the USA play Canada in the Olympics a few year back. Lemieux was the captain for Canada. I still rooted for the USA even though Lemieux is my all time favorite athelete. But for that day he was the enemy. That post would have been fine if not for that insane comment.

Killadelphia i dont really think most of us are trash talking richards, but honestly ask any fan base outside of philly which player they would rather have and it would be unanimous. thats not a knock on richards, but he is not an mvp caliber player yet, no doubt he is a very good player though, but it really isnt fair to compare the two

and as far as fighting, as it has been mentioned, its stupid for him to do it because of the risk of injury. hurting yourself going to goal is one thing, if he hurt himself fighting that would be unacceptable. he has proven hes no bitch like gretz and thats all he needs to do. the reason the pens have guys like ruutu and BGL isnt because sids cant stand up for himself, but rather so that sids doesnt have to, because he doesnt need to.

i will say this though, after watching so many of malkins games in russia i am really bummed he hasnt fought yet and i think it has to be a threat from therrien, because he beat the fuck out of so many players over there

Please, don't buy into the Flyer mentality of hockey that says a great captain has to fight. A great captain also has to get his head bashed in for not keeping his head up in the neutral zone, right Eric Lindros?

Killadelphia said...

Mike,

I agree I would take Crosby's offensive ability over Richards, but as far as "leadership" I am not sure. Dude does everything from centering the top line to defending his players. He also doesn't run his mouth about it. And that why people don't like Crosby because he always runs his mouth, but then he lets someone else fight his fight. I'm sure with more time in the league, he'll grow up, but that is his reputation right now.

I understand why he doesn't fight, but he also shouldn't be complaining about teams taking runs at him because of his attitude. He should be able to defend himself.

Richards will be in the running for the Selke award this year. I like my guys that can play both ways.

Before I really dub him to be the great thing he is, I'd rather Crosby be more of a complete player.

Either way, both these teams are young and the lopsided rivalry may be fun for awhile.

Pittsburgh Girl Forever said...

I actually think the guy didn't rail on us too bad.

Come on, dude, I hate a lot of players in the league but wouldn't mind some of them joining us in Pittsburgh. Why wouldn't you want Philly to get that kind of limelight? Crosby may have that rep. but he is considered the Savior of Hockey and half of the reputation is because people who are jealous keep mentioning his rookie season and wanting penalties. Plus, sid doesn't need to fight. How many fights did "The Great One" get into to? And Lemieux? Exactly, Sid is not Laraque, so saying he doesn't fight means little to anyone. Do you watch the Pens alot ... when anyone hassles Sid Malone is basically on that dude. Example, Sid gets hit by your captain Smith, Malone doesn't like who he's being treated, takes matters in his own hands, and fights. As long as Sid the Kid is who he is, they are people who will defend him. When Witt (who I despise on some many levels) hit Crosby mid-ice, Malone and Whitney went over to him. Malone showed witt he didn't appreciate the hit on hisn leader. (Thanks, Wilsmith for summing everything up!!)

One poster, I don't feel like scrolling down to find the name, says he was looking at the ref. Really? I thought he was trying to score and was moving his body to get the puck in the goal. If you watched closely, you would see he was going for a goal.

Furthermore, please, do not make remarks on Darius. Growing up he was my hero, and he was never and is still not a scumbag. He played a physical type of hockey many fans should respect.

Phillyfanintheburgh, what do you expect? You live in pittsburgh and don't expect people who have grown up watching amazing talents play here and say stuff to you if you wear Philly gear? Some of my relatives live in Philly, and I put on a Steelers shirt on (note I was about 8 or 9 at the time), I got booed walking down the street with my brother. Classy, huh?

Bravo 700 Level. A classy post, when you could have lowered yourself to their level. I don't know if it's unfortunate (probably just their nature), but they obviously didn't take anything from it, and didn't bother to rise to your level of respect. Perhaps it was having them watch "the Shot", from the game in which they shall not name, for it brings a dark, cold surge of fear and emptiness to their hearts and minds at the uttering of the number 5 and the word overtime in the same sentence. I, however, only share respect with those I feel can reciprocate it.

How can a Hockey fan not have respect for the Pittsburgh organization (this excludes fans of course), or deny Mario as one of the best. How many of us idolized the achievements of Jordan, a man so talented, his whole team become great with zero talent themselves. Pippen will historically be a joke for embodying this fact. Yet you, 700Level have been abused for your honesty and integrity. Foul, i say. Great sports fans do not deny greatness, and are not afraid to show it (except when the athlete in question is Tom Brady, because no man can resist hating another man who impregnates two super hot chicks without marrying either of them).

How can one, as a Hockey fan, watch Cindy (whoops, slipped on the keyboard there) Sidney Crosby flop as much as a boardwalk filled with girls in beach shoes, like him as a player? Frankly, I'd be embarrassed if our player went into the boards that weak, all on his own trying to look for a whistle that isn't coming, and manage to give himself a high ankle sprain, out 8 weeks or more. (But it's OK, because the pens lost 3 to the Flyers WITH him) In the city where Aaron Rowand busted his face while MAKING "the catch", we look down on Crosby and laugh. We even have a QB who threw 4 touchdowns and over 300 yards on a broken ankle, but we digress...

All in all, Pittsburgh, don't waste your time marking Feb 10th down. You wasted your time waiting for the last one, so let us count down your days for you. Heck, I would almost recommend not bothering to watch, but why deny you the pain you so rightfully deserve. There might even be a 1% chance that you wake up Feb 11th, and the pens actually won. It'd be like an extra Christmas, except that you actually got something instead of having to go work because Dad never came home from the bar, and Mom sells herself cheap.

Here's to you Pens Fans, and to your motorcycle riding without a helmet luck, that you smash your face into a windshield, and leave its imprint as a symbol of your wasted lives...

Dude sounds like a Caps fan talking shit about Sid though. Poor kid gets mauled constantly, runs his mouth to the ref no more than any other player, but since there's nothing legitimate you can fault him for, he gets labeled a whiner. My personal favorite is everyone questioning his leadership ability. I'd think the best people to ask about that would be his teammates and they've been vocally unanimous in agreeing he deserves the C. But please, continue to speculate from miles away. I'll trust the boys in the locker room.

"Well I mean there are a number of things that go into the homicide rate," Mayor John Street. "There... this is... this is a social problem."

One major social condition is poverty, reports Solorzano. Philadelphia's poverty rate is the highest of any major U.S. city. And Philadelphia is overwhelmed with illegal weapons.

"Now we have youngsters as young as 13, 14, 15 with Tech nines and Mac tens, and semi-automatics," said Abraham.

Yeah, Philly sure is a joke. A real city builds an arena with public funds, not privately funded like yinz did with your hockey arena.

And a real city would never actually go to baseball games, even if one of the best ballparks was right downtown.

It's completely unacceptable to fight in the RSL; unlike in the NHL, players get rights suspended, pay suspended, and games suspended, for dropping the gloves. Well, the 700Level post wasn't that bad and it wasn't at all what I expected. Wait, scratch that. It didn't start out as I expected. This incredibly cunning author tried to rope us in with his nostalgic sincerity by reminiscing on his childhood adulation of the Penguins, only to ambush us with his uninspired and unoriginal anti-Crosby tirade. "Rant, rant, rant. He dives. He whines. He doesn't fight. He's not a good leader. Rant, rant, rant". Quite comical, really.

As Samuel L. Jackson says in Pulp Fiction, "Well then, allow me to retort".

When Sid entered the League as a rookie, he definitely embodied somewhat of a hotshot attitude. His maturity off-ice has always been far beyond his years, but in those days his on-ice routine was right on par. He did dive and try to buy calls. He did argue incessantly with officials, often times post-dive, in an attempt to buy calls and he drew alot of criticism from other players, coaches, and sports broadcasters/journalists for it. It was well deserved then, as he did these things with great frequency although under much more scrutiny as the poster-boy for the "new-NHL". Sid's every action was under the microscope, being dissected by everyone in the hockey world. Although, that is to be expected when you are one of the best in the League and proclaimed to be "the Next One".

However, those days of "diving and whining" appear to be coming to an end quickly. Seeing the metamorphosis from first year rookie to third year captain was really something to behold. Ever since that embroidered "C" was sewn onto his jersey Sid has been a different player. Sid still plays with the same intensity, emotion, and passion as he did when he was a rookie; but the poise and restraint he lacked in his first two seasons he now has in spades.

Sure, he complains and gives the ref an earful. But as Captain, it is now his place to argue for calls in order to give his team the upper hand and an opportunity to sway the momentum of the game.

As for the diving, Sid has largely abandoned that routine since roughly halfway through his rookie campaign. Having Mario as a landlord, mentor, colleague, and critic surely had something to do with it. Maybe being one of best players in the league also has a little to do with it. Having opposing teams prepare more for you than the rest of the players on your team's roster means something. Anyone take into account that Sid gets played harder than roughly 99.9% of the League? Give or take .1%, of course. Sid is a force to be reckoned with, and frequently draws calls not by diving but just by playing his game because the opposition can't legally contain him. Yeah, he's that good.

Next, the whole "he's a pussy, he doesn't fight" argument. Sid won't fight unless he has to, every player has a breaking point. He only has one fight to his credit and he held his own in a fairly even bout with Andrew Ference, a scrappy Bruins defenseman. The Kid is only 5'10"-5'11", he's a skill player, and you want him to drop his gloves? I'm sorry, did Wayne Gretzky fight a lot? No!? Only THREE times in his entire 20-season, 1695 (includes playoffs) game career!? Oh, okay. Skill players score, and fight rarely when the deem it necessary. Why not leave the fighting to the goons which the Flyers seem to have cornered the market on?

Finally, Sid's leadership abilities which you so adamantly question. Were you aware that upon being asked if he would accept the captaincy Crosby proceeded to individually ask each of the veteran players that were also likely contenders for the C for their good graces and permission to accept? Probably not. But you're right, he's definitely a self-righteous immature player. And secondly, I was unaware you had full access to the Penguin's practices, team meetings, and the like. You MUST have some inside connection in order to see his leadership falter so often that you would prefer Mike Richards (not your Captain, by the way) over Sid as the captain of your team. It is all a matter of opinion and we are all obviously biased, but your flawed and unconvincing argument fails to make any semblance of a case against Sid. All you've done is bring up the problems with Sid's game that have since been almost entirely corrected. What a joke.

P.S. Hey, everyone look at me! I am so much cooler than beren because I just got home now and wrote this comment! And I'm drinking so many more beers than he claims he was! And I JUST GOT HOME! Do you know how late it is!? I was with my friends partying ALL NIGHT! HOLY SHIT! And my grammar is still better than his, yet he claims to be so eloquent and well educated! I am currently attending Penn State and I am smarter than he is, but he already graduated! There are probably less grammatical errors in my massive posts than in all of his short posts combined! Same thing goes for the Philly/Pittsb which is nicer arguement.....

If you're sub 33 no kids, thinking mostly about yourself, and you want A)Great night life B) Strong Job pool where you can establish a white collar higher income career C) Access to the shore, then philly wins in a landslide. If your younger, it is a nicer more enjoyable town to live in.

If you thinking about the rest of your life and you A)want an easy commute B)an affordable house C)nice community D)Less congestion E) Less Crime F) Nicer people ... the list goes on and on. Pittsburgh wins in a land slide.

I grew up in New York, lived briefly in Radnor PA (main line), and have now lived in Pittsb for 8 yrs. I wouldn't wish pittsburgh on a 25yr old. That being said, at 39yrs old with kids, I wouldn't live anywhere else.

After experiencing both towns, only a biased homer could think the "quality of life" in philly is anywhere close to that of Pittsburgh.

Oh, by the way, the greatest scoring/fighting leader of any hockey team, ever, is Mark Messier.

The only rivalry could be in hockey, but both teams have more storied opponents and rivals. You talk about Pittsburgh fans wanting this rivalry, I talk about how you have the same complex towards Crosby.

I was born in Pittsburgh and after a few years moved to Philadelphia, where I've spent the last 24 years (except college in Central NY). The funniest thing about this post to me is the inferiority complex.

No city has a bigger inferiority complex than Philadelphia does with NYC. It's hilarious in a pathetic kind of way that this writer thinks Pittsburgh gives a shit about Philly. They are two entirely different cities.

Pittsburgh is a friendly midwest-type city that doesn't try to be like Philly in any way. Philly desperately wants to be like NY, from the music scene, restaurants, arts, etc...but it will never come close to living up to NY. Unless you consider Philly passing NY in murder rate some sort of achievement.

I'm not sure how Philadelphia fans can argue anything about their city with regard to sports. If you take the three major sports that each city has in common, Pittsburgh has 5 World Series titles to Philly's 1, Pittsburgh has 5 Super Bowl Titles to Philly's 0, and Pittsburgh and Philly are tied with 2 Stanley Cups Each. That's 12 Championship wins for Pittsburgh compared to 3 for Philly.

Also, Jeff Jimmerson is immensely better than Lauren Hart at singing.

Also not sure who asked but Killadelphia is from a live Lamb of God album recorded there a few years ago. Where they got it from is anyone's guess.

It shows how much Pittsburgh sucks and how dumb we are when you can't spell Pittsburgh. Yeah, that Kansas city might suck... I wouldn't know, I have never been there.

Ohh, I'm not much of a basketball fan so an NBA team seems superfluous to me. Nice joke about how the Pens sucked 5 yrs. in a row ... when did Philly get the right to make fun of the Pens when they weren't that hot either. Ohh, was it such a distant time last season? Thank you, though, for admitting we picked up good players! In a way, you complimented us.

ahh yes the great pitt fans of the world?.? haha you guys are truely a joke from your sports teams to your sandwiches. you are all lucky you get to watch crosby these days b/c i can rememeber not that long ago when this team was in the shitter.Your all lucky that super mario is truely super or else you wouldnt have a team. so before you claim your cups and how great your squad is remember this, when the flyers had their worst season in franchise history we sold out every game, can u all say that?! dont call yourselves fans your all frontrunning frauds. for every team not just the pens, wait till the pirates get hot in a few years maybe then youll have more hometown fans in there then away fans. get over yourselvs and show some true loyalty and hell maybe even make a little noise in the mellon between goals, god you could hear a pin drop in there sometimes. one love!
